It’s the gift that keeps on giving. My two children, Uma and Storm, made this beautiful box. They painted it and decorated it with pearls. Inside are 50 hand-written notes with reasons why they love me. Just think of how much time it must have taken them to make it. It’s a gift that means the world to me.

I’m surrounded by generous people, both privately and professionally. People who believe in me unconditionally. Trust is such a great gift to receive because of the motivational energy that comes along with it. Every day, I’m blessed to stand on the shoulders of so many great artists and designers. But the simple truth is that we all fare so much better when we let our guards down, and share the knowledge and the talents that we have.

There are no shortcuts to finding the perfect gift. Thankfully. Everyone can buy what they already know they need, so your task is to come up with that one thing they probably wouldn’t have found for themselves. Your gift needs to show that you’ve made a real effort to put yourself in their shoes. But that being said, I would always encourage people to give a piece of themselves. To include that personal touch.

With a truly international and interdisciplinary background, she has developed a distinctive way of creating personal identity with emotional impact, for both private clients and international brands.

I’ve worn this necklace every single day, since I got it. My children gave it to me last year, and this year they gave me another two pendants with their initials on, to go with the zodiac sign. It makes me feel like my children are always with me, no matter where I am in the world.

I love surprises. For my 40th birthday, my sister put together this incredible surprise party for me. Just two months earlier I had been in a serious car accident, which meant a lot of rehabilitation and very little socialising, so having all my friends and family show up to celebrate me was the most thoughtful thing ever.

Working on interior projects for private clients is much like trying to find the perfect gift for a friend. You need to know the people you are working with, spend time with them, visit their home. Then it’s up to me to design that personalised solution they’ve always dreamt of, but couldn’t quite materialise on their own. My best advice for someone looking for that perfect gift would be to think of a great experience you’ve shared with the person you are buying for, and then use that as your inspiration.

Since making his solo debut in 1985 as Papageno in Mozart’s The Magic Flute for the Royal Danish Opera, bass-baritone Sten Byriel has shared his voice on stages all over the world – including Salzburger Festspiele, Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris and the Royal Opera House in London.

INDULGING

The first time I saw one of Malinovsky’s paintings of Maria Callas was at the Royal Danish Academy of Music. I was instantly taken aback by its powerful expression, that just struck something deep inside of me. I fell in love with that painting. Of course, the gallery had sold every one of them. But for my last birthday, my husband surprised me with the best work of the entire series. Once again I was totally stunned. This time by a loved one’s determination to grant me my biggest wish. Now that’s true love.

Perhaps the biggest act of generosity was my parents’ willingness to put aside their own ambitions, in order for me to pursue a career in opera and classical music – even though it was so different from anything they’d ever known. Now, every time I’m on a stage, I’m giving back in my own way. The more you put yourself into the music, the more your audience will get in touch with themselves – and they in turn reward you for that experience. It’s a constant exchange of emotional generosity.

I love taking time to myself. To read, to take our five Great Danes on a long walk or just loose myself completely in beautiful recordings of the old masters. It’s so important to give into these moments of contemplation. To use music, not as background noise, but as an emotional journey.
