What is a BEWell Champion? BEWell Champion is a motivated and enthusiastic Virginia Beach City or School employee willing to educate fellow employees on BEWell, support programs, health and wellness.

What do Champions do? BEWell Champions create healthier, happier worksites throughout Virginia Beach! They are the “go-to” person on BEWell. They assist in promoting health and well-being initiatives and help keep their co-workers stay informed and engaged. In addition to promoting BEWell, they coordinate site initiatives such as walking groups, lunch and learn seminars, book clubs and more!

How can I become a Champion? Visit BEWell online to see if your worksite needs representation, review the expectations and complete the application. As an extra incentive, Champions can earn Virgin Pulse points!

By par ticipating in Virgin Pulse the points you earn translate into rewards and you can earn up to $500 a year! You’ll earn points for:

SIGNING UP AND JOINING: Star t earning points right away on Virgin Pulse by setting up your prof ile! You can also connect with all of your fellow co-workers and share your achievements!

DAILY CARDS & HEALTHY HABITS: Everyday on your Virgin Pulse home screen, you’ll see healthy habits and daily cards. You get points for reading the daily cards – quick health and wellness tips catered to you based on the interests you choose each quar ter! You also earn points for tracking healthy habits – you can pick from an extensive list of habits and earn points for up to three each day.

GENER AL HEALTH: Getting an annual physical or health screening is an important way to monitor your health, and also earn Virgin Pulse points! Your annual physical can be done by your Primary Care Physician, or BEWell hosts Wellness Fairs throughout the year!

HEALTH MEASUREMENTS: Health Stations are a convenient and private way to help you stay on top of your health. There are stations strategically placed throughout Virginia Beach so you can easily earn Virgin Pulse points, access BEWell suppor t programs, and get validated weight & blood pressure measurements!

ACTIVITY: There are many ways to earn points, and tracking your activity is one of them! Fitness devices and mobile apps can track your walking, running, and calories burned.

CHALLENGES: A little competition can go a long way for motivation! There are lots of oppor tunity through Virgin Pulse to star t and join challenges among small groups of friends as well as the entire City and School employee population! (City and School wide challenges are communicated through the BEAT quar terly).

SLEEP: Good sleep habits are impor tant for your health. Cer tain mobile apps or f itness devices track your sleep, and if you sync a compatible app or device with Virgin Pulse, you can earn points each time you track!

BEWELL IS POWERED BY VIRGIN PULSE; A DYNAMIC, CREATIVE AND INDIVIDUALIZED PLATFORM THAT PROVIDES TOOLS AND RESOURCES TO KEEP YOU ENERGIZED AROUND WELLNESS AND TAKE THE NEXT STEPS IN IMPROVING YOUR HEALTH.

NUTRITION: Browse healthy recipes on Zipongo, track your calories by syncing a MyFitnessPal account, and set your eating style each quar ter to earn points on the nutrition guide through Virgin Pulse!

MINDFULNESS: Virgin Pulse has collaborated with Whil to embrace science-backed stress reduction and mindfulness. Training videos focused on mindfulness, yoga, and leadership are available through the platform 24/7.

DIGITAL HEALTH COACHING: Journeys is the only digital coaching intervention of its kind, giving you personalized pathways to create and sustain healthy habits that lead to positive outcomes. By taking small steps that lead to big change, Journeys helps you stress less, move more, eat better, cut back on alcohol, quit smoking and suppor t chronic conditions including diabetes and musculoskeletal health.

CANCER SCREENINGS: Early diagnosis and treatment of conditions can lead to better prognosis, so BEWell encourages you to seek preventive cancer screenings. If you receive cer tain cancer screenings any time in 2019, let BEWell reward you for your effor ts! Complete the required forms and turn them into BEWell for points.

BEWELL EVENTS: BEWell offers events throughout the year like health education classes and f lu shots. By attending these events you will receive points for par ticipation. Check in with the BEWell BEAT throughout the year for an up-to date list of upcoming events.

SUPPORT PROGR AMS: Access all of BEWell’s suppor t programs in one place! Employee Assistance & Work-life Services by Humana, Weight Management: Retrof it, Tobacco Cessation: Quit For Life & Optima Health Disease Management. By par ticipating in these programs you may be eligible to receive points.

Your Virgin Pulse account ends on the last day of the month following your retirement/termination date. So if you are retiring/terminating make sure you go into your account and:

Cash out all PulseCash online or via the mobile app (“Put it in the Bank” option not available on mobile app)

Disconnect all activity trackers (and mobile apps) from your Virgin Pulse account

If you elect health coverage as a retiree through VBCPS/COVB you will be able to re-enroll in Virgin Pulse once your health coverage has been fully processed.

HOW TO EARN

You can EARN UP TO $125 EACH QUARTER! That’s $500 PER YEAR ! The more healthy activities you log on Virgin Pulse, the more money you’ll earn.

Q I’ve heard that I get taxed on the money I earn from participating in Virgin Pulse. Is this true?

Yes! In adherence with IRS guidelines, all incentives and giveaways through the BEWell Program are considered taxable fringe benefits and taxes will be taken from your paycheck after redemption of PulseCash within two months. For example: If you redeem PulseCash in January, BEWell will receive your name from Virgin Pulse in February. BEWell will then transmit this data to payroll during the month of February and taxes will be taken from your pay in February or March.

Retrof it is Virginia Beach City & Public Schools’ 12-month weight management program consisting of coaching, classes and community!

Private live coaching sessions - done via video conferencing online

This is a virtual program, so you will not need to go anywhere, you can do it from the comfort of your home. You will access your Zoom video conferencing session directly from your Retrofit account (via computer or mobile app) under your sessions tab.

30 minute weekly exper t-led online classes related to 3 core areas of focus: nutrition, exercise and mindset

Access to a Community Suppor t page where you can share successes and struggles

Asthma is a disease of the airways in the lungs that can make it difficult to perform daily activities. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a serious lung disease that, over time, makes it hard to breathe. The good news is that asthma can be controlled and Optima Health’s team of registered nurses, respiratory therapists and patient service coordinators is here to help you. The team promotes healthy behaviors, provides education, makes suggestions for optimal treatment, serves as a support system, and answers questions about asthma. Members who have been to the hospital several times for their asthma will be eligible to have a home health nurse come and visit them in their home to talk about the possible causes for their asthma and make suggestions for changing the home environment to reduce these triggers.

Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) is a common term for the buildup of plaque in the heart’s arteries that could lead to heart attack and Congestive Heart failure (CHF) is a type of heart failure which requires seeking timely medical attention and means that the heart isn’t pumping as well as it should be. By participating in this program you will receive a support system to help keep your CAD and/or CHF under the best possible control.

BEWell (Beach Employee Wellness) is a voluntary wellness program available to all employees and retirees on the health plan. The program is administered according to federal rules permitting employer-sponsored wellness programs that seek to improve employee health or prevent disease, including the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act of 2008, and the Health Insurance Por tability and Accountability Act, as applicable, among others. If you choose to par ticipate in the wellness program you will be asked to par ticipate in cer tain health-related activities.

If you are an eligible employee or retiree and choose to par ticipate in the wellness program you will be eligible to receive an incentive of up to $500 a year (or up to $125 quar terly) for par ticipating in health-related activities such as:

Completing a health risk assessment or “HRA” that asks a series of questions about your health-related activities and behaviors and whether you have or had cer tain medical conditions (e.g., cancer, diabetes, or hear t disease).

Completing an annual health screening where you will be asked to complete a blood test for glucose and cholesterol levels as well as tests for blood pressure and body mass index (BMI).

Completing online activities like tracking your f itness, sleep or nutrition through compatible trackers.

Turning in proof of a performed cancer screening for a pap, mammogram, prostate, or colorectal exam.

Par ticipating in disease and condition management or tobacco cessation programs.

Although you are not required to par ticipate in the wellness program, only eligible employees and retirees who do so will receive the incentive based upon the number of points earned. If you are unable to par ticipate in any of the health-related activities required to earn an incentive, you may be entitled to a reasonable accommodation or an alternative standard. The information gathered from your par ticipation in the health-related activities listed above will be used to provide you with information to help you understand your current health and potential risks, and may also be used to offer you services through the wellness program, such as targeted outreach for programs that may be of interest to you based on your health status. You also are encouraged to share your results or concerns with your own doctor.

PROTECTIONS FROM DISCLOSURE OF MEDICAL INFORMATION

We are required by law to maintain the privacy and security of your personally identif iable health information. Although the wellness program and the City of Virginia Beach and Virginia Beach City Public Schools may use aggregate information it collects to design a program based on identif ied health risks in the workplace, BEWell will never disclose any of your personal information either publicly or to the employer; except as necessary to respond to a request from you for a reasonable accommodation needed to par ticipate in the wellness program, or as expressly permitted by law. Medical information that personally identif ies you that is provided in connection with the wellness program will not be provided to your supervisors or managers and may never be used to make decisions regarding your employment.

Your health information will not be sold, exchanged, transferred, or otherwise disclosed except to the extent permitted by law to carry out specif ic activities related to the wellness program, and you will not be asked or required to waive the conf identiality of your health information as a condition of par ticipating in the wellness program or receiving an incentive. Anyone who receives your information for purposes of providing you services as par t of the wellness program will abide by the same conf identiality requirements. The only entities who will receive your personally identif iable health information are Virgin Pulse, Optima Health and BEWell in order to provide you with services under the wellness program.

In addition, all medical information obtained through the wellness program will be maintained separate from your personnel records, information stored electronically will be encrypted, and no information you provide as par t of the wellness program will be used in making any employment decisions. Appropriate precautions will be taken to avoid any data breach, and in the event a data breach occurs involving information you provide in connection with the wellness program, we will notify you immediately.

You may not be discriminated against in employment because of the medical information you provide as par t of par ticipating in the wellness program, nor may you be subjected to retaliation if you choose not to par ticipate.
