 18

Rite of ReconciliationReconciliation is available for all who desire it. It is not restricted to times of sickness. Confessionsmay be heard anytime and anywhere.

The content of a confession is not normally a matter of subsequent discussion. The secrecy of a

confession is morally absolute for the confessor, and must under no circumstances be broken.

 WELCOME

Priest  In the name of the Father, and of the Son,and of the Holy Spirit.

Penitent  Amen.

Priest  Have mercy on me, O God, in your loving-kindness.

Penitent In your great compassion blot out my offenses.

Priest   Wash me through and through from my wickedness.

Penitent Cleanse me from my sin.

Priest  For I know my transgressions only too well.

Penitent My sin is ever before me.

CONFESSION OF SIN

The penitent may take a few quiet moments to prepare, after which the rite continues:

Penitent  Father _____,

pray for me to God,

for I am a sinner.

The priest offers a prayer for the penitent as he is led. The priest then says:

Priest  In the presence of Christ,

and of me, his priest,

confess your sins to Almighty God,

our Creator and our Redeemer, for he is full of kindness and compassion

to those who repent and return to him..

Penitent  Holy God,

heavenly Father,

you formed me from dust in your image and likeness,

and redeemed me from sin and death

by the cross of your Son, Jesus Christ.

Through the water of baptism you clothed me with the shining garment of his righteousness,

and established me as a child in your kingdom.

But I have squandered the inheritance of your saints,

and have wandered far in a land that is waste.

Today I come to this place

to confess to you and to your Church

the sins which most deeply grieve me

and impair my relationship with God

and with my brothers and sisters...

The penitent now confesses his or her particular sins.

When the penitent has concluded, he or she concludes their confession, saying:

Penitent  I today forsake these sins,

and all the sins I cannot now remember,

and I turn to you in sorrow and repentance.

Receive me again into the arms of your mercy,

and restore me to the blessed company

of your faithful people;

through him in whom you have redeemed the world, yourSon our Savior Jesus Christ.

The priest offers words of counsel and peace, and may engage the penitent in discussions aimed at furthering their spiritual life.

RECOMMITMENT TO A CHRISTIAN LIFE

The priest then continues:

Priest  Do you today renew your commitment

to follow Jesus Christ?Penitent  By God’s grace, I do. Priest  Do you today desire to do what is necessary

to make peace with God,

 with yourself,

and with those you have hurt or offended by your sins?

Penitent  By God’s grace, I do. Priest  Do you today forgive all those

 who have sinned against you?

Penitent  By God’s grace, I do.

Priest  May the almighty and merciful God

receive your confession of sorrow and of faith,

strengthen you in all goodness,

and by the power of the Holy Spirit

preserve you unto everlasting life. Penitent   Amen.

ABSOLUTION

The priest then lays a hand upon the penitent's head (or extends a hand over the penitent), and pronounces one of the following forms of absolution.

Priest May our Lord Jesus Christ,

who offered himself to be sacrificed for us to the Father, and who conferred power on his Church to forgive sins,

absolve you through my ministry

by the grace of the Holy Spirit,

and restore you in the perfect peace of the Church.

Penitent   Amen.

or:

Priest May our Lord Jesus Christ,

who has left power to his Churchto absolve sinners who truly repent and believe in him, forgive all your sins in his infinite mercy.By his authority committed to me,I absolve you from all your sins:In the Name of the Father, and of the Son,and of the Holy Spirit.
