Pensieri e Riflessioni Thoughts and Reflections by Frank Rivera

“I looked up my family tree and found out I was the sap.” Rodney Dangerfield

OLD HOME WEEK

The annual Frank Guidace Memorial Bocce Tour-nament at the St. Frances Cabrini Church in San Jose is a fun tournament to play in. It’s almost like an ‘old home week’ for me. More than half the players are from the Campo di Bocce Los Gatos Senior League, in which Cynthia and I play. Some of the rest are members of the church itself, with a few people from out of the area, such as our teammates Sharon Page and Ron Marengo, who are from Stockton. A lot of Northern California people have heard of this tournament, but not a lot have played in it. It kind of slips by them every year. Although the St. Frances Cabrini Bocce Club is a USBF member club, this tourna-ment isn’t on the annual tournament schedule, nor do they put an application in this newsletter. This is because it needs no advertising. A lot of us look forward to it every year, and as soon as we hear the date it will be played on, we scurry to get an application, lest we be left out.

NO MEN THIS TIME

I always enjoy working on the ‘From The Archives’ page. It gives me an excuse to look at all the photos I have from past tournaments. I took most of them, but it’s always a treat for me to take another look at the photos others have taken and sent in. I did notice one thing in going over them all; not as many women as there should be. I’ve covered this old theme a few times in past edi-tions of this newsletter: Bocce isn’t just for little old Italian men anymore. No; it isn’t, but there’s no denying that men still far outnumber the women. This is changing, though. Over the past year or so I’ve met a lot of bocce players I hadn’t seen at previous tournaments, and many of them are women. It’s good to see the ranks of women

players growing. There are several women only tourna-ments on the USBF schedule each year. I love to attend them to take photos. The lunches are always good, but for some reason, when it’s a women only tournament, those women really know how to roll out some fine des-serts after lunch. But I digress. In honor of the growing number of women who have joined the sport, I decided that this month will have women only in the ‘From The Archive’ page. In a future edition of this newsletter, I will have a feature article on women bocce players. Although women have been playing bocce for many years in the past, a lot of whom no longer play or are no longer with us, I want all you newer women bocce players to take a look at some of your sisters on page 5. They helped blaze a trail for you in this previously men-exclusive club known as “bocce.” God bless ’em all.

WHEN IT RAINS, IT POURS

It rains and pours a lot up in Oregon and Washing-ton, so when the weather is kind to the bocce players up there, they hit the courts to take advantage while they can. It’s almost time to call it quits until next Spring in the Northwest, so they made a mad dash to get in all their bocce in before the rains come. USBF Representative and newsletter contributor extraordinaire Larry Cereghino sent in a boatload of Northwest stuff; information and photos on five tournaments from up there in Ducks and Huskies country (we won’t mention a certain other foot-ball team in Washington. No sir; not while this newsletter is published in 49er Country). Six tournaments if you count the photo below. Yes; when it rains, it pours, whether it be liquid sunshine or bocce tournament news. Either one is good, but I’d like to see some of that liquid sunshine they get so much of come down to our neck of the woods for a few days. That would be good, too.

"Half this game is ninety percent mental." - Philadelphia Phillies manager, Danny Ozark

It is Friday night in the Pearl District of NW Portland and another round of Portland Bocce League matches are ready to begin. Filling the sidelines at the West Court are the large ex-tended families of two teams playing each other tonight; the No Soy Italianos v. The Bocce Bunch. Both teams bring together three generation members on their rosters; paternal and maternal parents, sons and daughters, and grandchildren. A family tree is almost necessary to identify the levels and who doubles as an uncle or aunt, niece or nephew, son or daughter. Each team celebrates their joy of bocce and family with a competitive spirit that has no age boundary. Brad Cotton, 54, is the founder and second-generation member of his team, The Bocce Bunch. Currently they are sitting atop the Friday night teams with an undefeated record at 10-0. He began his team this year. but it's his third year in the league and had success as back to back Single Champion. Brad’s dad, Mark Cotton, at 83, is the oldest member; while Brad’s nephews Adam Leschber, 26, and Eric Leschber, 24, are brothers and are the third-generation players on the team. The competitive spirit has deep roots in the Cotton Family. Mark Cotton built a legacy as a Cross Country and Track & Field coach at Portland’s Grant High School after beginning his career as a teacher and coach in the fall of 1962. All three of his kids participated in cross country and track under his tutelage . In his first 8 seasons, his Grant boys’ teams garnered six Oregon State Championships. He added a first girls state cross country cham-pionship in 1974 with the Grant girls, with Adam and Eric 's moth-er , Trina being a member of that state championship team. and closed out his 28-year education and coaching career with an eighth state championship with the 1988 Grant Boys Track Team. Following in Mark’s footsteps at Grant was his own son, Greg, (Brad’s brother), who ran under his dad and then followed as a teacher and coach. Greg coached his nephews, Adam and Eric at Grant as they too followed the family legacy into competitive cross country and track & field by running in the state champion-ships as hurdlers.. Dan McNeal founded the No Soy Italianos in 2013. The team started with only four players; Dan, his wife Gwenn, his son Andy, and his son-in-law Ed Ayvar-Lopez. The team has expand-ed to include Dan’s mothers’ beau, Bill Henning, 81, Gwenn’s dad, Jerry Marcella, 71, and Gwenn’s nephew, Blake Marcella, 14. They are the regular players although the team roster also includes Glennis McNeal (Dan’s mom), Maggie McNeal Ayvar-Lopez (Dan’s daughter), Cindy Marcella (Gwenn’s mom) and Brenna Marcella (Gwenn’s niece). Friday night is a true family affair for the No Soy Italianos as they routinely head over to a local pizza place, Hot Lips, for dinner after their matches. Ed

receives credit for their team name, which in Spanish means “I am not” Italian. Italian, or not, the No Soy Italianos, 6-4 on the season, demonstrate their own affinity for the game and competitive back-ground through its three generations. Dan grew up playing sports, but a competitive tradition was ingrained in him by his parents who organized a volleyball league in the local neighbor-hood park throughout the summers of his youth. His bocce team is a way to continue that tradition and unite family through compe-tition and sport. Bill Henning brings a 60-year career as a compet-itive bowler to the team and ownership of at least 20 team cham-pionships. Blake competes in little league baseball. Both have made their presence known this season and are considered the team’s top candidates for MVP, while Jerry held those honors the previous season. Cheers and family banter ooze from the sidelines and the familial crowd edges closer to the court as it is evident on this night that both teams brought their best. The score is close with No Soy Italians holding a 12-11 lead. Jerry throws out the pallino and craftily sets his ball next to it. Mark steps up and smartly takes out the point ball and establishes the point for The Bocce Bunch. Jerry again steps forward, and without hesitation bowls out the point and re-establishes the point for No Soy Italianos. Mark’s second attempt falls short, but Brad’s first throw hits its target and gets the point again for The Bocce Bunch. His second throw results in two points on the pallino but Dan is left with two balls in hand to close out the frame. His first throw is a blast meant to break apart the setting but it misses and the two points sit there as the tie and go-ahead points for The Bocce Bunch. Dan is unnerved and he lays his second throw in close enough to take one point away; the game is tied at 12-12. The match will continue in this fashion as each team trades points until the time limit is about to end the match tied at 16-16. With five minutes left, the last frame begins on the youthful end of the court where the third generation players, Adam and Eric (The Bocce Bunch) and Blake (No Soy Italianos) can be the difference. Again the throws are side-by-side, each player nudging the other to take the lead. Eric, Blake and Bill have exhausted their throws and No Soy has the point. Adam holds the last two throws, he misses the point on his first attempt, but collects himself , and rolls right onto the pallino to score one for The Bocce Bunch, and an 18-17 victory to remain undefeated. The Bocce Bunch ended the season at 13-1 and advanced to the semi-finals of the League Championship Tournament, while the No Soy Italianos finished at 7-7. Both teams and all three generations will be back next year.

This was the first time the Skinnys made the finals in the last three years and they were up against 5 time finalist, 3 time winner, “Pazzo”. The semifinals saw Pazzo and Skinny Ghinny battle in a close game that the Skinnys came from behind to win and send Pazzo to the loser’s bracket to face Bello Ragazzi. Pazzo rolled well and easily defeated Bello Ragazzi who struggled to get it going. In the finals, Pazzo needed to win twice against Skinny Ghinnys, but that didn’t happen as Skinny Ghinnys were flawless and cruised to an easy win.

The Portland Bocce League celebrated their year end championship and party on a balmy Portland Sep-tember evening at the Park block courts. Delicious food, good wine and great friends; what more could one want? How about watching some great bocce! Our year culminated with a Singles Tournament finale followed by the Team Championship. The singles game final was a much anticipated match that pitted father against son. Bill Mallon and his 17 year old son Luca, went head to head after a single elimination season long tournament of close to 60 partici-pants. Luca used the personal balls he’d purchased with money from a fundraiser Paesano member Paul Barasch started. Bill hedged his bets by using 2 balls lent by Jack Elder and 2 from another league player. (Superstitions appear to run deep in the bocce world). In the end, youth

and skill won over experience and borrowed balls. Congratulations and celebrations were brief be-cause Bill and Luca had to join the rest of the family; mom Michele and Luca’s younger brother Santo, for the Team Championship. The same two power house teams from last year met again this year to determine who would win the tro-phy and glory of “Best of the league’s 40 teams.” Bocce Dios and Famiglia battled it out last year with Bocce Dios taking the title. Famiglia was hungry for revenge this year but who would be the victor; the bocce family or the real family? The stars were once again in alignment for Bocce Dios and the Mallons went home with all the marbles: is anyone thinking Family Dynasty? Congrats and thanks to both teams for providing the 240 attendees a tight and exciting year end match.

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP

2014 PAESANO BOCCE

Sept. 7th was the playing of the first Paesano Bocce Club Championship. This year the club used a double elimination format to determine the outcome. This was by far the toughest field we’ve had for a singles only event and it showed in the scores. Nick Rossi was crowned champion of the men’s division and Kate Allister took home the gold for the woman. A political event in Gresham for one of the Paesano woman who is running for State office kept the numbers low for the women and also an illness but the women who did compete were very competitive. In the Men’s division 16 of the 24 members played for bragging rights for next year. The last four games were as close as they could get. While Nick sat on top waiting for the loser’s bracket, Paul Barasch came back from being way down and beat one of the top Paesano players Butch Mason. Then Paul played Mario Pompei and seemed to control the game until a successful shot had unsuccessful results and Mario racked up 4 points and Paul couldn’t recover. That set up the finals between Mario Pompei and Nick Rossi. Like he usually does, Nick controlled the game and had an easy lag to win the match when the ball just kind of slipped out of his hand giving Mario the point and the Pallino. Mario then ran off 7 straight points to win the first game by 1. The 2nd and final game was close all the way with neither player getting too far in front. Nick ended up being the better man and claiming bragging rights for the next year.

The 12th Annual

Frank Guidace’s Dream Became A Reality For Us All By Rosemarie Jarvis and Marie Volz

Reprinted from August 2012 USBF Western Sector Newsletter

The bocce ball courts at Saint Frances Cabrini Church in San Jose, Ca. are a great enjoyment for members of The Italian Catholic Federation Branch 191 and friends. The courts have been open for approxi-mately 14 years and continue to be a great success. In 1998, our father, Frank Guidace was 1st Vice President of the ICF, and was the sole inspiration be-hind having bocce ball courts built on the parish grounds. At first, some of the members were a little re-luctant to get his dream going, but Frank was persistent and believed that it would be entertaining for all. President James Jones said, “Frank wouldn’t let up. You know how persistent he was when he set his mind to doing something.” In 1999, Father Bob Kiefer approved the idea. Along with President James Jones’ support and the help of branch and community members, the dream became a reality. The area where the courts were developed was a dirt lot which was used for storage and Christmas tree sales. In August 2000, construction on the project was underway including leveling of the property, fencing the perimeter, concrete walkways, and retaining walls for the courts. Frank wanted olive trees planted as a focal point in the landscaping. He then named the courts “The Olive Garden Bocce Ball Courts”. The building of the courts was a labor of love. Many branch members participated in one way or another. In 2001, the bocce ball courts were blessed by

Father Kiefer and opened. Frank Guidace became president of the ICF Branch 191 in January 2002. Un-fortunately, Frank’s presidency, as well as seeing his aspiration of the courts finalized, was short lived. He passed away in May of 2002. An engraved bench near the statue of the Holy Mother is dedicated to Frank for his hard work and effort in making the courts possi-ble. A long time parishioner, Vince Cusella, also loved the game of bocce. He coordinated the 1st Annual Frank Guidace Memorial Tournament which was held in July 2003.

The courts are available from April through October. Every Thursday evening the courts are open from 6:00pm to 9:00pm with a potluck dinner for members and guests. Those who play bocce make a donation. The courts accommodate 80 people and are a great picnic area and a perfect place for events and tourna-ments. There are three bocce ball courts,

barbecue grills, covered picnic tables and chairs, a horse shoe pit, and facilities. The horse shoe pit was provided by boy scouts along with some of the land-scaping, which resulted in two of the young men acquir-ing their Eagle Scout badges. The courts are managed and maintained by mem-bers of the Italian Catholic Federation Branch 191. All revenues are donated to St. Frances Cabrini Parish. We are very thankful and proud of our father, Frank, for his idea and perseverance, and to all the others who contin-ue to make the courts a huge success!

Sixteen, 4-member teams played a double-elimination tournament on two oyster shell ser-viced courts located at Berth 95, Port of Los An-geles. POLICY FOR INCLUSION OF NON-USBF MEMBER TOURNAMENT APPLICATIONS

The policy of the Western Sector Newsletter is that we will gladly list non-USBF sanctioned tour-naments on our Upcoming Tournaments section and display applications for those tournaments hosted by non-USBF member clubs as long as the date of those non-member tournaments do not conflict with a date on which a USBF sanctioned tournament will be held.

Even if a non-USBF member club tournament is not promoted in our Upcoming Tournaments section due to this conflict, we will gladly post photos of those tournaments in the next issue of this newsletter immediately following the month in which the tournament took place.

If you wish to have your tournament represented in this newsletter, please make every effort to provide us with the winners photos with the names of the winners from left to right as they ap-pear in the photo. Please feel free to provide as many photos as you wish of your tournament during play. The newsletter editor will determine how many photos to use based on available space in the newsletter. If you wish to provide written commentary, please make that commen-tary no longer than 300 words, or approximately 1/2 page, using the Arial font at size 10.
