WELCOME TO CHRIST COVENANT CHURCH We are glad you are here to worship the living God! This worship folder is intended to guide you through the service, as well as provide you with devotional material to take home.

IN PREPARATION

We can hide at least a part of ourselves from most others, including those who are closest to us. But God knows us fully - our thoughts, our inner dialogue, our righteous and our unrighteous affections. It is a fearful thing to be known by the living and Almighty God. There is no hiding. But there is hope. God knows us fully, and yet he is slow to anger. He knows how selfish we can be, and yet he was selfless. Today our worship proceeds along two lines: 1. God searches and knows us, and 2. Even though he knows us he accomplishes the wondrous work of salvation by fulfilling promises and giving life.

SERVICE OF WORSHIP — 9:00 and 10:45 AM

Leader: Bless the LORD, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name! ALL: As a father shows compassion to his children, so the LORD shows compassion to those who fear him. For he knows our frame; he remembers that we are dust. Leader: Bless the LORD, O you his angels, you mighty ones who do his word, obeying the voice of his word! Bless the LORD, all his hosts, his ministers, who do his will! ALL: Bless the LORD, all his works, in all places of his dominion. Bless the LORD, O my soul!

Old Testament Scripture Reading—Psalm 139:1–2, 4, 7–9, 23–24 O LORD, you have searched me and known me! You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O LORD, you know it altogether. Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!

Confession of Sin Assurance of Grace—Psalm 103:8–12

The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. He will not always chide, nor will he keep his anger forever. He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us.

Congregational Response—Gloria Patri

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, amen.

SERVICE OF WORSHIP — 6:00 p.m.

Announcements and Greeting

Call to Worship—Psalm 37:3–5, 7 Leader: Trust in the LORD, and do good; dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness. Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart. ALL: Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him, and he will act. Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way.

Congregational Hymn—Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing Come, thou fount of ev'ry blessing, tune my heart to sing thy grace; Streams of mercy, never ceasing, call for songs of loudest praise. Teach me some melodious sonnet, sung by flaming tongues above; Praise the mount! I'm fixed upon it, mount of God's unchanging love.

Here I raise my Ebenezer; hither by thy help I'm come; And I hope, by thy good pleasure, safely to arrive at home. Jesus sought me when a stranger, wand'ring from the fold of God: He, to rescue me from danger, interposed his precious blood.

O to grace how great a debtor daily I'm constrained to be; Let that grace now, like a fetter, bind my wand'ring heart to thee. Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, prone to leave the God I love; Here's my heart, O take and seal it, seal it for thy courts above.

Text: Robert Robinson, 1758; Music: NETTLETON, Asahel Nettleton, 1825

Prayer of Adoration

Congregational Hymn—O Christ, Our Hope, Our Heart’s Desire O Christ, our hope, our heart's desire, Redemption's only spring; Creator of the world art thou, its Savior and its King. How vast the mercy and the love which laid our sins on thee, and led thee to a cruel death to set thy people free. But now the bonds of death are burst, the ransom has been paid; and thou art on thy Father's throne in glorious robes arrayed. O may thy mighty love prevail our sinful souls to spare, O may we come before thy throne and find acceptance there! O Christ, be thou our present joy, our future great reward; our only glory may it be to glory in the Lord! All praise to thee, ascended Lord; all glory ever be to Father, Son, and Holy Ghost through all eternity!

Text: Latin Hymn, 8th century, trans. John Chandler, 1837; Music: KINGSFOLD, Old English folk song

New Testament Scripture Reading—1 Timothy 6:6–11

Congregational Song—Christ Is Mine Forevermore Mine are days that God has numbered, I was made to walk with him. Yet, I look for worldly treasure and forsake the King of kings. But mine is hope in my Redeemer; though I fall, his love is sure. For Christ has paid for every failing; I am his forevermore.

Mine are tears in times of sorrow, darkness not yet understood. Through the valley I must travel where I see no earthly good. But mine is peace that flows from heaven, and the strength in times of need. I know my pain will not be wasted; Christ completes his work in me.

Mine are days here as a stranger, pilgrim on a narrow way. One with Christ, I will encounter harm and hatred for his name. But mine is armor for this battle, strong enough to last the war. And he has said he will deliver safely to the golden shore.

And mine are keys to Zion city, where beside the King I walk. For there my heart has found its treasure; Christ is mine forevermore.

Come rejoice now, O my soul, for his love is my reward. Fear is gone and hope is sure; Christ is mine forevermore.

And mine are keys to Zion city, where beside the King I walk. For there my heart has found its treasure; Christ is mine forevermore.

Preaching of the Word—James 4:1–5

THE DANGER OF DESIRE—Mike Kruger

Congregational Hymn—May the Mind of Christ My Savior May the mind of Christ, my Savior, live in me from day to day, by his love and pow'r controlling all I do and say.

May the Word of God dwell richly in my heart from hour to hour, so that all may see I triumph only through his pow'r.

May the peace of God my Father rule my life in ev'rything, that I may be calm to comfort sick and sorrowing.

May the love of Jesus fill me as the waters fill the sea; him exalting, self abasing: this is victory.

May his beauty rest upon me as I seek the lost to win, and may they forget the channel, seeing only him.
