WELCOME TO CHRIST COVENANT CHURCH

We are glad you are here to worship the living God! This worship folder is intended to walk you through the service, as well as provide you with devotional material to take home.

IN PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP

Today we are singing a traditional Celtic folk song, an American folk song from the Southern Harmony tradition, and traditional African-American spiritual. Down through the ages wonderful songs have been preserved and then appropriated for many contexts. It is fitting that folk songs have been used for singing the Psalms, God’s songbook given to us. Notice the difference in the setting of Psalm 133 and Psalm 23. While “Behold How Good a Thing” is stately, and even slightly awkward, allowing the text to jar our minds into action, “My Shepherd Will Supply” is more ‘song-like,’ smooth, and flowing. We come away from Psalm 133 wondering what in the world that means! Note that “O Lord How Joyful Tis to See” almost serves as a musical and meditational commentary on Psalm 133. Conversely, we come away from Psalm 23 with a strong sense of the Great Shepherd’s care. Both approaches are useful in that they encourage us to meditate and feast upon the living Word in various ways, which is one of the main goals of corporate worship.

SERVICE OF WORSHIP — 10:45 a.m.

Announcements and Greeting

Scripture Meditation—Psalm 23:5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

Prelude Call to Worship—Psalms 133 and 134

Leader: Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity! It is like the precious oil on the head, running down on the beard, on the beard of Aaron, running down on the collar of his robes! ALL: It is like the dew of Hermon, which falls on the mountains of Zion! For there the LORD has commanded the blessing, life forevermore. Leader: Come, bless the LORD, all you servants of the LORD, who stand by night in the house of the LORD! ALL: Lift up your hands to the holy place and bless the LORD! May the LORD bless you from Zion, he who made heaven and earth!

Assurance of Grace—Ephesians 1:7–10 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.

Offertory—For the Beauty of the Earth

For the beauty of the earth, for the beauty of the skies, For the love which from our birth over and around us lies. For the beauty of each hour of the day and of the night,

Hill and vale and tree and flower, sun and moon and stars of light:

Refrain: Lord of all. To thee we raise this, our sacrifice of praise.

For the joy of human love, brother, sister, parent, child, Friends on earth, and friends above, for all gentle thoughts and mild,

Pleasures pure and undefiled: for each perfect gift of thine, To our race so freely giv’n; graces human and divine, flow’rs of earth and buds of heav’n:

[Refrain.]

For thy church whichevermore lifteth holy hands above, Offering up on every shore her pure sacrifice of love:

[Refrain.]

Call to Worship— Psalm 48:1–3 Leader: Great is the LORD and greatly to be praised in the city of our God! ALL: His holy mountain, beautiful in elevation, is the joy of all the earth. Leader: Mount Zion, in the far north, [this is] the city of the great King. ALL: Within her citadels God has made himself known as a fortress.

Congregational Hymn— #119 I Sing the Almighty Power of God

Prayer of Adoration

Congregational Hymn— #122 God, All Nature Sings Thy Glory

Confession of Faith from the Westminster Confession of Faith Ch. 1.1 Although the light of nature, and the works of creation and providence do so far manifest the goodness, wisdom, and power of God, as to leave men unexcusable;

yet are they not sufficient to give that knowledge of God, and of His will, which is necessary unto salvation. Therefore it pleased the Lord, at sundry times, and in divers manners, to reveal Himself, and to declare that His will unto His Church; and afterwards for the better preserving and propagating of the truth, and for the more sure establishment and comfort of the Church against the corruption of the flesh, and the malice of Satan and of the world, to commit the same wholly unto writing; which makes the Holy Scripture to be most necessary; those former ways of God’s revealing His will unto His people being now ceased.
