Craft Council of Ireland Irish Craft Portfolio 2010“ It is twelve years since my first encounter with Irish craftwork at the Kilkenny Design Centre, and in that relatively short time the skill

and innovation of the makers in creating unique pieces of work through a multiplicity of materials and techniques has developed hugely; both individually and collectively, and has consequently created a growing interest in the work by collectors and galleries. The group of craftspeople the gallery is privileged to show are all individually part of the Irish Craft Council’s ‘Irish Craft Portfolio of 2010’ established in 2005 to support and promote artists to an international exhibition standard, all showed at ‘Collect’ an international exhibition held at The Saatchi Gallery London earlier this year.

The Stour Gallery has been showing some of these makers for a number of years, we are delighted that the Crafts Council of Ireland has supported us in putting together and enabling the promotion of work by this accomplished group of makers.” Sarah Stoten

Cormac Boydell’s work relies on direct contact of hands and Irish terracotta clay. His understanding of metal oxides and glazes, results in a brilliant colour pallet that

he has developed and made his own.

Denis Brown is internationally recognised as a world master in the fields of calligraphy and letter arts, using letter forms to create three dimensional works of art.

Sara Flynn focuses on the challenges and demands of working with porcelain explored through the theme of the thrown vessel, which are then cut, pushed and reassembled to emphasise precise and undulating contours and curves.

Mark Hanvey makes some of the most exciting and innovative turned objects from a variety of specially chosen woods, as well as carved pith vessel work.

Joe Hogan is one of the most celebrated Irish basket makers and sculptors working today is involved in the whole process from growing the willow to making baskets. Recently he has devoted his time to making sculptures involving the use bog myrtle and other found material.

Berina Kelly reflects in her work an interest in organic and natural structure, the contrast between the simple and the complex in natural formations.

Deirdre McCrory has worked as an applied artist specialising in enamelled artworks from her studio in Hillsborough, Northern Ireland since the late 1970s. Most recently she has worked in printmaking and now successfully combines both disciplines.

Karen Morgan hand throws porcelain, altered while still in its wet state resulting in distinctive folding, to form her beautiful and unusual shapes.

Marcus O’Mahony makes stoneware and porcelain pieces inspired by the Leach/Hamada tradition at his studio in rural County Waterford; using salt glaze and wood firing techniques, to deliver a unique results from the kiln.

Mandy Parslow makes salt-glazed stoneware, specialising in wood-fired ceramics. Her pieces are initially wheel-thrown and then altered while the clay is still soft, retaining the energy and tension present in freshly thrown clay.

Inga Reed’s jewellery is made employing classic goldsmithing techniques and combining precious metals with precious and semi-precious stones, embossed and roller printed textures, with simple, clean shapes.
