A SECOND CHANCE

• This is an inspiring incident from the life of a great scientist,

• Thomas Alva Edison.

• Before the invention of electric lights, the night was lit only with oil lamps and candles.

• Alva Edison was working on an experiment to make a light bulb.

• Edison had worked on this project for long while.

• He had braved many failures,

Page 4: A SECOND CHANCE

• yet he was convinced that a light bulb could be made.

• He believed that such an invention could be of enormous benefit to mankind

• Finally one day his invention was complete.

• He was extremely joyous that his invention could see light of the day

• He had worked hard toiled day and night,

• some times even forgetting to eat and sleep.

• When he looked at his light bulb, a great sense of pride and achievement came over him.

• It brought him deep joy to have been the inventor of the world’s first electric bulb

• Now, Edison had an assistant called Jimmy.

• Since the bulb had to be tested, he asked his assistant to take it to upstairs.

• He handed the precious glass bubble to is assistant and tell him “ Take it upstairs, Jimmy, let us try it out”.

• Edison was following Jimmy up the stairs

• when he heard a loud crash….. .

• The bulb had slipped out of Jimmy’s hand and had crashed on to the floor

• Poor Jimmy was trembling with fear.

• Thought it was purely an accident, Jimmy was unable to meet Edison’s eyes and hid his face in shame.

• He stood like a statue and kept muttering apologies to Mr.Edison.

• he expected Mr. Edison would fly off the handle and scold him for his carelessness.

• But, then Edison stood there silently gazing at his broken dreams.

• A few moments later he said “ Right Jimmy , let us go back to work.

• We have an awful lot to do

• Back they went to the lab to start work.

• The long and tedious, process of making another light bulb started.

• Some days later another bulb was ready

• Once again the atmosphere was electrified with excitement. Edison felt a great sense of achievement

• “Come , Jimmy,” he called out to his assistant.

• “ Let us try this out.” Then he did something quite remarkable.

• He handed over the bulb to Jimmy and said, “ Take this upstairs for me.”

• This time he cautioned Jimmy. “Careful with it now” he said.

• Jimmy’s hands froze with fear.

• He was afraid that he will drop it again.

• But no such thing happened.

• They took it upstairs and bulb worked successfully.

• Today, thanks to Thomas Alva Edison, • there is almost no place in the world

untouched by electric bulbs. • Thanks to Edison too, • the world has an example of truly

great man, • who not only forgave his assistant but

also gave him a second chance to put things right.
