THE TENNESSEE GENEALOGICAL MAGAZINE, "ANSEARCHIN'" NEWS, is the official publicationof THE TENNESSEE GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY. All subscriptions begin with the first issueof the year. Non-delivery of any issue should be reported to the Society within twomonths of the date of usual delivery. A charge of $2.50 will be made for redeemingand re-mailing copies which are returned to us, and which must be forwarded. Subscribers may submit ONE free query per year of fifty words or less, which must bereceived in this office by September first of that year. Contributions of all typesof genealogical material will be accepted. We publish previously unpublished Tennessee connected data, preferably that with pre-Civil War dates, all of which issubject to editing to save space. Every effort will be made to print accurate material; however, neither THE TENNESSEE GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY, "ANSEARCHIN'" NEWS, northe Editor can assume responsibility for errors on the part of contributors. We hope your summer was a pleasant one and you were able to search for and locatethose lost ancestors. On a personal note, I received help from a "new-found" California cousin and have been able to, hopefully, climb over the very solid brick wallthat has hidden my maternal great grandfather since the Civil War.

The newly revised and updated CUMULATIVE TABLE OF CONTENTS for The Tennessee Genealogical Magazine, "ANSEARCHIN"' NEWS, is now available. All articles and subjectspublished in "ANSEARCHIN"' NEWS from 1954 through 1990 are listed; the price isstill only $1.00 for this valuable aid. .

This is the third issue of "ANSEARCHIN "' NEWS, and we invite you to renew your subscription by sending $15.00 for 1991. A form is enclosed for your convenience. Ifwe have not yet published records for the particular Tennessee county/counties of interest to you, let us know and, if possible, we will include them in future issues.

Our annual Surname Index is in the fourth issue of "ANSEARCHIN'" NEWS; in the pastthis issue has not reached you until late January or February. With the use of computers, we will try to mail the issue the last of December. Please remember, we arean unpaid, all volunteer staff and have busy holiday season schedules. In fact, TheTennessee Genealogical Society and Library close each year from before Thanksgivinguntil after the first of January. Themail is picked up while we are closed, butthere may be a delay in replies to your letters.

Have you enjoyed the maps published in our magazine? We hope so, and we are indebted to our President and former Editor, Betsy Foster West. Betsy spends hours reducing and "cleaning up" large scale maps ordered from The Tennessee State Library andArchives for the 1836-1837 Civil Districts of the various counties. Her talent andpatience are remarkable, and the maps reflect her dedication to accuracy. Beingable to see the area of the county where your people lived can be helpful to locatethem in nearby counties, both before and after the map date.

14-3-1813 Petition of Thomas BLACKNEY of Montgomery County shows that he "is nowand has been many years in the Possession of a woman of Colour named

Harriette about thirty one or thirty two years of age and was bourn in the State ofVirginia near the close of the revolutionary War and from the best information yourPetitioner ..• doth believe that the mother of said Harriette was entitled to her freedom and was plundered from the State of Maryland, run to the State of South Carolinaand sold to the father of your petitioner as a Slave •.• " His father, on enquiry,discovered that Harriette was entitled to her freedom by birth when she became ofage. As a last request he asked that Harriette should not be treated as a slave butshould be raised as a member of the family and given her freedom "when she arrive atfull age." This is now the purpose of this petition. Furthermore, Harriette hasbeen in the possession of Thomas Blackney for "upwards of Seventeen years sincewhich time she •.. has borne three children ... Frederick, a boy twelve years of age onthe day of April last - John, a boy seven years of age the 15th of January lastand Tobias, a boy five years of age the 10th day of December last, which said illegitimate children your petitioner requests and wishes should be made free when theyarrive at the age of manhood and surnamed after the Blakney family ••• " Blackney requests that he be made Guardian of the boys and promises to feed, clothe & educatethem. He further states that "the Act of Assembly ratifyed in the year 1801 authorizing the County Courts to emansipate Slaves does not cover your petitioner's request or wish, said Woman of Colour not being considered as a Slave, and her threechildren not being claimed by me or any other person as such ... "

May 18th 1852 The weather has been cool & pleasant. I was out late lastnight in search of a stray lunatic but did not succeed in finding her. She escapedfrom the Asylum about 11 oclock in the morning & passed here after sundown. Aftersupper an assistant physician came in pursuit & at his request I accompanied him.She was found today at the academy & carried back to the Asylum.

May 19th 1852 Saw Mr Brooks today & was informed by him of the operationsof Mr Carnahan. I found it necessary to go to Murfreesboro & attend to the accts hehad in his hands. Went up on the evening train & remained all night. Found him sick& could not get a settlement with him. He promised me however that he would attendto it in the morning.

May 20th 1852 Went to see Mr Carnahan but did not settle. Left his acctswith Mr J B Palmer Esq with orders to settle immediately. Returned on the 10 oclocktrain. Had a conversation with Mr F in which I became convinced of his intention todischarge one or more of his clerks. I shall be one of them & as A J D has him sobound that he would not dare to discharge him to save his soul I suppose that J W Cwill be the other. He has acted a hypocritical part throughout & it will create butlittle sensation on my part to leave.

May 21st 1852 The days pass as days always have done & the long looked fortime is drawing near as such times will do when I am to visit that one most dear &and that other one scarcely less so. What will be the result of that visit? ShallI be acknowledged unconditionally the accepted of her I love? Or will some providence whose decree I may not question say your hopes are built upon a sandy foundation. Such is life hope today & fear tomorrow. The prospects of today bright &glorious over shadowed by the disappointments of tomorrow. But there is one thingone feeling one pang that I have never felt. And most sincerely I think the greatgiver of all good that I have been spared this. I have never yet felt one doubt ofthe constancy of Sue. However I? I have another consolation. If any person marriesme it will be for love for I have nothing to recommend me.

May 24th 1852 Mr & Mrs F went to Nashville today. Maj Tucker went also.Business dull. I have of late neglected to criticize my actions as closely as Iought & find as a consequence that I am rather retrograding in the scale of morals.I have been guilty of expressing myself rather too fiercely upon some subjects &about some persons. I must guard myself more closely in future. The practice ofmaking remarks (even if true) prejudicial to the interest of others is certainly veryreprehensible. The evil is like many other a growing one. It lives to broils contentions & every thing else but good results. I am determined to never say one wordto anyone (that is not strictly in confidence) against any person whatever in future& especially Mr F. Respect for his wife alone ought to be of itself a sufficientreason for this.

May 27th 1852 Inconsequence of a conversation with Mr F last night we hada settlement & I left his employment. Went to Jefferson to attend to some accts etc.

May 31st 1852 Started out on a collecting tour & succeeded in gettingenough to pay for my labor. Came home in the evening & then went to Mr Buells &spent the night. They seem to be very kind people showing a great deal of hospitality in their treatment of their guests.

June 2nd 1852 Had a long conversation with Jas before leaving. He seemsto intertain some hopes of succeeding with Carrie notwithstanding all that I toldhim. Verily a drowning man will catch at a straw. But what the straw is that he iscatching at is more than I can conceive. Came home before dinner & remained theballance of the day. Felt unwell from the effects of drinking too much cold wateryesterday.

June 5th 1852 After breakfast Mr Smith harnessed his horse to his buggy &went to Jefferson also to the Sulphur Springs. Returned about one & went to JohnPopes to get the note that he promised to give in place of those I now hold. He hadnot got it endorsed & requested me to carry it to Jackson Smith for his signature.I presented it to him but was told that he could not sign any more paper for him unless it was to renew notes that he was already on. Carried the note back to Mr Pope& left it & went home. Saw J Elder on the way & dunned him for some money due Fleming. Was told to call Wednesday morning & he would pay the note. Went home & foundthat Mr & Mrs Hazlewood had returned. Saw Caye & was told that he left the girlswell. Was again disappointed in not receiving a letter from them.

June 20th 1852 Remained at home all day in consequence of having no horseto ride my horse being disabled. I have spent the day mostly in reading. Read oneof Smith's sermons on self examination which reminded me of a duty that I have neglected to much of late & in fact all my life. Upon entering into an examination ofmy thoughts actions & feelings for the last few days I find that I have relaxed muchof my even ordinary diligence in self government. I find that I have permitted manyof those original sins such as pride anger envy hatred etc to grow spread theirbranches deepen their roots & then sow the seeds of future anguish & bitterness ofsoul. It seems as though with returning health all the evil habits & propensitiesof my nature return with renewed strength. Instead of feeling more thankful morewilling to devote myself to the interests of religion of renewing my efforts forgreater holiness I find my desire for wealth for pleasure & self gratification continually increasing. I think a part of this may be attributed to the entire neglectof my journal. The habit of noting down every day the transactions of the day thefaults that I have committed the sinful thoughts feeling passions & propensitiesthat I have indulged necessarily produces a kind of self examination that is alwaysbeneficial especially if followed by resolutions of amendment honestly & prayerfullymade. My unsettled situation includes the possibility of attending to this asclosely as I could wish but still by improving every hour when I am at home I canmostly overcome the difficulty. I received a letter from Sue a few days since inwhich she requested an interest in my prayers.

June 21st 1852 Exceedlingly warm all day. C L Davis was here & settledwith Maj Tucker. Afterward he bought the mills etc of Maj Tucker. I assisted themin their settlement for which I recd no thanks. Davis chd me $21 for hauling a loadof corn & fodder after I had worked 2 days on his mill accts. So the world goes.Borrowed Brown's horse & rode to Ely Smiths & P/F Hayers and collected fifteen dollars of the former which was credited on H B Smiths note. In reviewing the transactions of the day I see much to condemn & little to approve.

Nov 15th 1852 (Gibson Co - Zion) After an unpardonable neglect and thelapse of months during which some of the most important events of my life have transpired I again renew my acquaintance with you my good journal & ask a thousand pardonfor this unpardenable derilection from a known & palpable duty. And by way of remuneration for my neglect & as a thank offering for pardon granted I promise as fulla history of the past since the date of my last correspondance as my memory willfurnish. Well about the 10th of July I started for Fayette on a visit to -- but itis unnecessary to say who as you can easily guess. Went in company with S L Trigg.After a very pleasant journey I arrived in Fayette on the 15th. Found my friends allat home Carrie well but Sue & Mary down with chills. Sue however was able to be upbut Mary I did not see for nearly a week. Notwithstanding the unfavorable situationof the family I spent a few days very pleasantly. Having arranged the preliminariesfor future operations I left for Gibson Co for the purpose of making some arrangements for going into business. Arrived at Mr J S Smiths on Saturday & remained overSunday. Was very unwell both days. Monday I went to Mr Thos Bass's & in consequence

Nov 21st 1852 CloudyElder & J Wade called on Cousinpreaching at a Baptist church.Hazlewood came home with us toout at church that there would

of severe illness did not leave until the following Thursday. Spent some time inthe Co & saw many of my old acquaintances from Rutherford but did not find a situation or make any positive arrangements respecting one & started for home in companywith Mr Lane/Lune about the first of Aug. Was taken sick the first night after Ileft but was able to pursue my journey home altho I suffered with fever very muchall the way. For nearly three weeks after I arrived at Maj Tuckers I was confinedto the house most of the time. When able to ride I attended to some business & wassoon ready to return to the District. It was arranged that Maj Tucker who was goingwith me & myself should start the next Monday but he was taken sick the Saturdaypreceding & was confined to the house most of the time for five weeks. The third ofOct we started & went to Nashville where I bought a buggy etc to take with me toFayette. Nothing of particular interest occurred on the way. When we arrived inGibson Co we parted & after staying some three days I proceeded to Fayette whitherMaj T was to follow me. On the 12th of Oct I arrived at Mr Parks was cordially received & found my friends much improved from what they were when I left them. Thenext day Oct 13th I went to Somerville procured the necessary documents secured theservices of the Rev Mr Sherill & returned in company with him & Mr J Newsom to MrParks where we found a small company assembled to witness the interesting ceremony.But what ceremony you ask? It is no longer a secret now so I will write it in full.Listen. The marriage of Mr H K Northway to Miss Susan Emeline Parks. So my goodfriend you see that I am a married man the prophecies of all the wise heads to thecontrary notwithstanding. Well to continue for I must be brief the following Monday Maj Tucker & Co Miss C McDowell & brother myself wife brother & sister left toreturn to our several places of destination. We parted at Jackson Maj Tucker CarrieTucker & sister Mary proceeding on to.,Rutherford & the others to Gibson. We that isSue & myself went to Mr McDowels & remained about a week during which time I boughta place in the Zion neighborhood rented a house & made arrangements to move there assoon as possible. At the expiration 6f a week we returned to Mr P. We found him invery bad health from the effects of a violent cold taken by going to Somerville. Weremained there a week & then returned to Zion bring our effects with us for the purpose of commencing to keep house on our own account. And here we have been quietlydomiciliated ever since meeting now & then a rugged eminence in the journey of lifebut for the whole far greater reason for gratitude to an all wise God than for repining at the hardness of our fate. And now with a promise of less neglect infuture I bid you good night.

Nov 16th 1852 Cool & cloudy with a very little snow or sleet. Busied myself in repairing the fences & gates around the house.

Nov 17th 1852 Rainy in the morning & cool & cloudy all day. Went to MrMc Dowells in the morning & from there to Trenton in the evening. Mr McD went withme. Circuit Court met last Monday. Bought some things & returned to Mr McD's andstayed all night.

Nov 18th 1852 Returned home in the morning & occupied myself repairinggates fences etc. Mr Flynn, a Colporteur [a hawker of religious tracts and books]in the employ of the Presbyterian church called in the evening & remained all night.

Nov 19th 1852 Remained at home till after dinner & then went to the sawmill. Carried Sue & Cousin Rebbecca McDowell (who came home with us from herfather's) to Mr Edwards & left them till I returned. Miss Nancy Edwards came homewith us.

Nov 24th 1852 Cloudy & rainy all day. Went to J Lane's in the morning &in the evening to Allen McDougals to assertain where Mr Ashford was at work. Foundthat he was at Mr Keltons. Miss Mary & Miss Eliza Wade called in the evening. Wentto Mr Simmons late in the evening to buy a hog.

Nov 26th 1852 Cold raw day. Repaired the stables & fixed a place for thebuggy. Recd a letter containing a rect for Mr Lane from Sommerville. Sue also aletter from the Church at Somerville written by Mr Sherill.

Nov 27th 1852 Went to Trenton on business but done nothing but buy a fewarticles for family use. The agent for the Mobile & Ohio RR was in town proposingto let contracts. He succeeded in letting some 10 or 15 miles of the road. Preaching at Zion today. Sue & Cous Rebecca went.

Nov 28th 1852 Arose too late as usual. Went to see Mr Mallet a mechanica partial engagement for building a store. Saw Mr Ingram & had some converrespecting a negro woman that he has for sale. Returned home & then went toHoward but did not find him at home. Rained some in the evening and night.

Dec 1st 1852 Cleared off this morning & has been warm & pleasant all day.Went to the shop & had old gray shod also had a shovel made. Returned after dinner& in the evening went with Sue to Mr Elders & from there I went to Mr Simmons.

Dec 2nd 1852 Arose this morning with a violent headache. It got easiertho after breakfast & I rode to see Mr Mallet but did not find him. Saw Mr Ingram& had some further conversation with him about a negro woman that he has for sale.Concluded on taking her on trial. She was sent here this evening. Worked about thehouse till night. Cloudy all day with some rain after supper.

Mr. FRICKS received the following information from James H. SILER of Oak Park, ILafter he read the Spring 1989 issue of "Ansearchin'" News. This data is from aletter of Dr. Oliver K. AGEE of Maryville, TN in 1975. Dr. Agee gleaned the earlydates from a book by Dr. P.M. Agee, The Agee Family, which was privately printed inIndependence, MO August 1937.

Mathieu Agee, born c1670 near Nantes, France, fled to Holland then England as aHuguenot because of the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes. He arrived at Manakinnear Richmond, VA about 1690 with his wife Ann GODWIN (GAUDOIN). Mathieu had fourchildren: Judith married an AUSTIN, Isaac, James and Anthony. James married a FORD(FAURE) and had eleven·children. Anthony married a BINNION and had eleven children.Isaac Agee (1751-1845), son of Anthony, lived in Buckingham Co VA and married MarySMITH who had eleven children. Most of their children appear in the Spring 1989issue.

The lineage below is exclusively that of the distinguished Tennessee writer, JamesRufus Agee (1909-1955) who wrote A Death in the Family (a play and screen versionwas called All the Way Home). Readers of the novel will recall that the writer'sfather, called "Jay" in the novel, was killed in an automobile accident driving fromKnoxville to LaFollette to be with his father, Henry Clay Agee, who had just suffered a stroke. One of the most poignant stories was that of Rufus visiting hisgreat grandmother "up in the mountains". This was supposedly his grgrmother "Lynch"as he called the Agees and was Mary (COMER) Agee. Dr. 011ver K. Agee wrote thatthis episode was pure fiction. The automobile accident of the author's father, however, was not fiction and strongly marked James R. Agee for the rest of his life.

James Agee, son of Isaac and Mary Smith, was born 9 Jul 1788 VA and died CampbellCo TN 10 May 1843. He married Mary TUDOR and had six children.

James Harris Agee, son of James and Mary Tudor, was born 14 Feb 1827 and died8 Oct 1899. He married Mary Comer and had eleven children (a favorite family number)

Henry Clay Agee was born 3 Apr 1852 and died 9 Jun 1916. He married MaryLAMAR and had eight children.

Hugh James Agee was born 17 Apr 1878 and died 18 May 1916. He marriedLaura TYLER of Knoxville, daughter of Joel and Emma Tyler. Their son was JamesRufus Agee, the writer.

These 2657 abstracts of Scottish-Americans are taken from official inquests held at the time ofa landowners death in order to establish the credentials of the heirs. This procedure wasknown as the Services of Heirs and the records are kept at the Scottish Record Office in Edinburgh. As a rule the abstract will contain name of deceased, occupation, residence in Scotland,date, and relationship to the heirs; and for the heirs it will contain name, occupation, placeof residence in America as well as relationship to the deceased.

In 1781 Thomas Jefferson reminded the State of Virginia that the county courts were responsiblefor the building and maintenance of public roads and bridges. Each road was opened and maintained by an Overseer of Highways who was usually assigned all the "Labouring Male Tithebles"living on or near the road. Although the boundaries of Orange County had shrunk since its inception in 1734, it still contained Greene County during the period covered. Road arteriesconnecting with Orange County are also included. The index is divided into the categories of:personal names; bridges; houses, lands, plantations, quarters; mountains, gaps; rivers, runs,springs, swamps; roads; neighborhoods, towns, landmarks; geographic features, ordinaries andordinary licenses; ferries; mills; chapels, churches, glebes and meeting houses.

Ms. Eddlemon's latest work is a compilation of marriage records for Morgan County, Missouri,which was formed in 1833 from the southern portion of Cooper County. In addition to the namesof the bride and groom and date of the marriage, some miscellaneous genealogical information isincluded. There may be a large span of time between the date of marriage and the date it wasrecorded since many of the marriages were performed by circuit riders. Some marriages were recorded in other counties while others were never recorded.

Included in this book are 1250 descendants of John and Margaret Dysart Nichol of Magherabeg,Fahan Parish County Donegal, Ireland. Two of their sons, Josiah and John Nichol, emigratedfrom Donegal in the late 1780's and settled first near Saltville, VA. By 1802 they were livingin Knox Co TN, and by 1805 in Nashville. The author uses an alphabetical system of identification beginning with "A" for the prime progenitor and a descending letter combination for theirdescendants. An interesting background on why the Scots went to Ulster and then to America isgiven. Very good documentation is footnoted throughout the book, and a number of photographsand family charts are included. A few of the family names are: Chamberlain, Dunn, Crockett,Foster, Hightower, Lytle, Vaulx and Warren.

FOUR GENERATIONS OF HUNTER FAMILY

Mrs. Patricia LaPointe, librarian in the History Department of the Memphis/Shelby County Libraryand Information Center, Memphis, TN, found in the 23 Jul 1914 Commercial Appeal newspaper a fourgeneration picture of a McNairy Co TN family taken on the 90th birthday of H.A. HUNTER.

The caption reads "The above four generations represent one of the oldest and most prominentfamilies in McNairy County. They are H.A. Hunter, Mrs. John H. Steadman, Charles B. Steadmanand Hunter M. Steadman, all of Selmer. Mr. Hunter was born in Madison County, Tenn., and removed to McNairy in 1838. He has been a resident of Selmer 21 years. He has two children,Mrs. Steadman and Mrs. J.B. Maxedon of Selmer, 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.He joined the Methodist Church in 1837. Mr. Steadman is one of the most prominent merchants inSelmer. This group was taken Monday, July 13, the day Mr. Hunter celebrated his 90th birthday.

WHAT IS THE TENNESSEE GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY?

The Society is a non-profit organization formed in 1952 by local people who wereinterested in genealogical study and who wanted to collect and preserve genealogicalrecords. Many books were purchased, used by the members and then donated to theMemphis Public Library, until the dream of housing our own collection became a reality in 1970.

The Society receives no government funds or grants, depending entirely on the incomefrom the sales of its publications and projects - all manned by unpaid volunteers.A subscription to our quarterly, The Tennessee Genealogical Magazine, "ANSEARCHIN'"NEWS, is currently $15.00 and entitles one to:

1) all four issues of the current year, a total of 200 pages plus index;2) exchange privileges from the Master Surname Index, a card file of ancestral

information submitted by members and subscribers (must enclose a selfaddressed, stamped envelope);

3) one query of 50 words or less published in "ANSEARCHIN'" NEWS;4) use (for research only) of the library maintained and operated by the Society

at the Deerfield Building, 3340 Poplar Avenue, Memphis, TN (open Tuesdays andThursdays mid-January to mid-November 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.)

Active membership is open to those persons interested in genealogical study who livein the Memphis metropolitan area and who have been recommended by an active memberin good standing. This status entitles one to the above privileges of subscribersas well as the opportunity to borrow books from the organization's library, to vote,to hold office, to serve on committees and to take an active part in the functionsof the Society.

Projects of the Society are not limited to subscribers. They include:

1) the sale of all back issues of "ANSEARCHIN'" NEWS, Tennessee-related materialpublished since 1954, and protected by copyright;

2) the sale of books published by the Society, or by friends who have donatedthem (not necessarily limited to Tennessee);

3) Certificate of Tennessee Ancestry, issued by this Society upon application andreceipt of documented proof of descent from a Tennessean prior to 1880(send legal-sized, self-addressed, stamped envelope for further information);

4) biennial workshops and seminars.
