Transcript of A Savior Is Born
Our Savior is Born
We read something in the Old Testament that makes us think we are reading in the Gospels.
Our Savior is BornIsaiah 9:6 NET
For a child has been born to us, a son has been
given to us.
Our Savior is BornHe shoulders responsibility and is called:
Extraordinary Strategist,Mighty God,
Everlasting Father,Prince of Peace.
Our Savior is Born
7 His dominion will be vast and he will bring
immeasurable prosperity. He will rule on David's
throne
Our Savior is Bornand over David's kingdom,
establishing it and strengthening it
by promoting justice and fairness, from this time
forward and forevermore.
Our Savior is BornThe LORD's intense devotion to his people will accomplish this.
Isaiah is sometimes called the
Old Testament Gospel.
Our Savior is BornLet’s read from some commentaries written about these verses.
Isaiah 9:6 He shoulders responsibility
Our Savior is BornThat is, the ensign of
government; the scepter, the sword, the key, or the
like, which was borne upon or hung from the
shoulder.
Our Savior is Born
He is called: ,El gibbor אל גבור
the prevailing or conquering God.
Our Savior is BornThe everlasting Father “The
Father of the everlasting age” - Or אבי עד Abi ad, the Father of eternity. The Septuagint have μεγαλης βουλης Αγγελος, “the Messenger of the Great
Counsel.”
Our Savior is BornBut instead of אד אבי Abi ad, a
MS. of De Rossi has אבעזר Abezer, the helping Father; evidently the corruption of some Jew, who did not like
such an evidence in favor of the Christian Messiah.
Our Savior is Born
Prince of Peace שלום שר sar shalom,
the Prince of prosperity, the Giver of all blessings.
Our Savior is BornA MS. of the thirteenth century in
Kennicott’s collection has a remarkable addition here. “He
shall be a stumbling-block, the government is on his ;המכשלהshoulder.” This reading is nowhere
else acknowledged, as far as I know. (Clarke)
Our Savior is BornIsaiah 9:7 - forevermore - His peaceable
and happy government shall be extended to all the ends of the earth. The throne - Which was
promised to David, and to his seed for ever. For ever - From the beginning of it to all eternity.
Our Savior is BornThe intense devotion - This great work shall be brought to pass by almighty God, out of that
fervent affection which he hath to his own glory, to the honour of his son, and to his people.
(Wesley)
Our Savior is BornIsaiah 9:7 - dominion will be vast... - The word rendered “dominion” here,
mis'rah, means properly his משרהgovernment as a prince - his
principality, and is a continuation of the idea in the previous verse,
‘the Prince of Peace.’
Our Savior is Born
It means that his reign as a prince of peace -
in extending and promoting peace, shall
be unlimited.
Our Savior is Bornimmeasurable prosperity - This does not signify in the original, as our translation would seem to do, that there should be no end to the increase of his peace, but that there should be no limit to
peace,
Our Savior is Bornthat is, that his reign should be one of unlimited peace.
The whole is a description of a prosperous, wide-extended, ever-growing and unlimited
empire of peace.
Our Savior is BornOn David’s throne - This was in
accordance with the promise made to David; 1 Kings 8:25 NET Now, O LORD, God of Israel, keep the
promise you made to your servant, my father David, when you said,
Our Savior is Born'You will never fail to have a successor ruling before me on the throne of Israel, provided that your descendants watch their step and serve me
as you have done.'
Our Savior is BornThis promise was understood as
referring to the Messiah. The primary idea is, that he should be
descended in the line of David, and accordingly the New Testament
writers are often at pains to show that the Lord Jesus was of
that family;
Our Savior is BornWhen it is said that he would sit upon the throne of David, it is not to be taken literally. The uniqueness of the reign
of David was, that he reigned over the people of
God.
Our Savior is BornHe was chosen for this purpose from humble life; was declared
in his administration to be a man after God’s own heart; and his long and prosperous reign was a reign over the people of
God.
Our Savior is BornTo sit upon the throne of David, therefore, means to
reign over the people of God; and in this sense the Messiah sat on his throne. There is also a similarity in the two administrations,
Our Savior is Bornin the fact that the Messiah was taken from humble life. and that
his reign will be far-extended and prosperous. But the main
idea of resemblance is, that the reign of each extended over the
people of God.
Our Savior is Bornover David's kingdom –
That is, over the kingdom of the people of God.
It does not mean particularly the Jews, but all those over whom
the divine administration should be set up.
Our Savior is Bornestablishing it - To place it on a firm
foundation; to make it firm.strengthening it - To raise up, or
confirm it. The word, also, is sometimes used to denote to
found a kingdom. Here it means to confirm it, to cause it to stand.
Our Savior is Bornby promoting justice and fairness - That is, under an administration that shall be just and right. Most kingdoms have been those of
blood, and have been established by iniquity, and by the unjust overthrow of others.
Our Savior is BornBut the administration of the
Messiah shall be established in righteousness, and shall be
destined to extend and perpetuate justice and
righteousness forever. “From henceforth.”
Our Savior is BornThat is, from the time which was
the period of the prophet’s vision, when he saw in vision the Messiah rising in the dark
parts of Galilee; from this time forward and
forevermore - The word used here - קץ qets -
Our Savior is Born
may refer either to space or time. The connection, however,
seems to confine it to time, and to mean simply that over his wide-extended and peaceful principality he should reign
forever.
Our Savior is BornThe LORD's intense devotion The word used
here denotes “ardor,” intense desire in accomplishing an object; and
means that the establishment of this kingdom was an object of intense and ardent desire on the part of
Yahweh.
Our Savior is BornIt is also implied that nothing else than the zeal of Yahweh could do
it. We may remark here:
(1)That if Yahweh feels so intense a desire for this, then the subjects
of the Messiah’s reignshould also feel this.
Our Savior is Born(2) If Yahweh feels this zeal, and if he
will certainly accomplish this, then Christians should be encouraged in
their efforts to spread the gospel. His purpose to do this is their only
encouragement - and a sufficient encouragement - to excite their zeal in
this great and glorious work. (Barnes)
Our Savior is BornMatthew 1:18 NET Now the
birth of Jesus Christ happened this way. While
his mother Mary was engaged to Joseph, but
before they came together,
Our Savior is Bornshe was found to be pregnant through the
Holy Spirit. 19 Because Joseph, her husband to
be, was a righteous man, and because he did not want to disgrace her,
Our Savior is Bornhe intended to divorce her privately. 20 When he had
contemplated this, an angel of the Lord
appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph,
son of David,
Our Savior is Borndo not be afraid to take
Mary as your wife, because the child
conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will
give birth to a son and you will name him Jesus,
Our Savior is Bornbecause he will save his people from their sins." 22 This all happened so
that what was spoken by the Lord through the
prophet would be fulfilled:
Our Savior is Born23 "Look! The virgin will conceive and bear a son,
and they will call him Emmanuel," which
means "God with us."
Our Savior is Born24 When Joseph awoke from sleep he did what the angel
of the Lord told him. He took his wife, 25 but did not have marital relations with her until she gave birth to a son, whom he named Jesus.
Our Savior is BornMat 1:21 - Jesus - The same as Joshua, יהושע Yehoshua, from ,yasha, he saved, delivered ישע
put in a state of safety. He will save his people from their sins - This shall be his great business in
the world:
Our Savior is Bornthe great errand on which he is
come, viz. to make an atonement for, and to destroy,
sin: deliverance from all the power, guilt, and pollution of sin, is the privilege of every
believer in Christ Jesus.
Our Savior is BornLess than this is not spoken of in the Gospel; and less than this would be
unbecoming the Gospel. The perfection of the Gospel system is not that it makes allowances for sin, but that it makes an atonement for it: not
that it tolerates sin, but that it destroys it.
Our Savior is BornMatthew 1:1 NET This is the record of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of
David, the son of Abraham., Here he is called Jesus Christ, on which Dr. Lightfoot properly
remarks,
Our Savior is Born“That the name of Jesus, so often added to the name of
Christ in the New Testament, is not only that
Christ might be thereby pointed out as the Savior,
Our Savior is Born
but also that Jesus might be pointed out as the true Christ or Messiah, against the unbelief of the Jews.” This observation will be of great use in numberless places of the New Testament.
Our Savior is BornThe Shepherds'
Visit
Luke 2:8 NET
Now there were shepherds nearby living out in the
field, keeping guard over their flock at night.
Our Savior is Born9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord
shone around them, and they were absolutely
terrified.
Our Savior is Born10 But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid!
Listen carefully, for I proclaim to you good news that brings great joy to all the people:
Our Savior is Born11 Today your Savior is born in the city of
David. He is Christ the Lord.
your Saviour
not One who shall be a Savior, but “born a Savior.”
Our Savior is BornChrist the Lord
“magnificent appellation!” [Bengel]. “This is the only place where these words come together; and I see no
way of understanding this “Lord” but as corresponding to the
Hebrew JEHOVAH” [Alford]. (JFB)
Our Savior is BornSaviour (soter). This great word is common in
Luke and Paul and seldom elsewhere in the N.T. (Bruce). The people under Rome’s rule came to call the emperor “Saviour”
and Christians took the word and used it of Christ.
See inscriptions (Deissmann, Light from the Ancient East, p.
344).
Our Savior is BornChrist the Lord (Christos Kurios).
This combination occurs nowhere else in the N.T. and it
is not clear what it really means. Luke is very fond of
Kurios (Lord) where the other Gospels have Jesus.
Our Savior is BornIt may mean
“Christ the Lord,” “Anointed Lord,” “Messiah, Lord,”
“The Messiah, the Lord,” “An Anointed One, a Lord,”
or “Lord Messiah.”
Our Savior is BornIt occurs once in the lxx
(Septuagint) (Lamentations 4:20) and is in Psalm of Solomon 17:36. Ragg
suggests that our phrase “the Lord Jesus Christ” is really
involved in “A Saviour (Jesus) which is Christ the Lord.” (RWP)
Our Savior Paid the PriceActs 2:22 NET "Men of Israel,
listen to these words: Jesus the Nazarene, a man clearly attested to
you by God with powerful deeds, wonders,
and miraculous signs
Our Savior Paid the Pricethat God performed
among you through him, just as you yourselves know 23 this man, who
was handed over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God,
Our Savior Paid the Priceyou executed by nailing
him to a cross at the hands of Gentiles. 24 But
God raised him up, having released him from
the pains of death,
Our Savior Paid the Pricebecause it was not possible
for him to be held in its power 25 For David says
about him, 'I saw the Lord always in front of me, for he is at my right hand so that I
will not be shaken.
Our Savior Paid the Price26 Therefore my heart was
glad and my tongue rejoiced; my body also will live in hope, 27 because you
will not leave my soul in Hades, nor permit your Holy One to experience
decay.
Our Savior Paid the Price28 You have made known
to me the paths of life; you will make me full of joy with your presence.'
29 "Brothers, I can speak confidently to you about our forefather David,
Our Savior Paid the Pricethat he both died and was
buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. 30 So then, because he was a prophet and knew that God had sworn to him
with an oath
Our Savior Paid the Priceto seat one of his
descendants on his throne, 31 David by
foreseeing this spoke about the resurrection of
the Christ,
Our Savior Paid the Price
that he was neither abandoned to Hades, nor did his body experience decay. 32 This Jesus God raised up, and we are all
witnesses of it.
Our Savior Paid the Price33 So then, exalted to the
right hand of God, and having received the promise of the Holy
Spirit from the Father, he has poured out what you
both see and hear.
Our Savior Paid the Price34 For David did not
ascend into heaven, but he himself says, 'The Lord
said to my lord,: "Sit at my right hand 35 until I make your enemies a
footstool for your feet." '
Our Savior Paid the Price
36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know
beyond a doubt that God has made this Jesus
whom you crucified both Lord and Christ."
Our Savior Paid the Price37 Now when they heard
this, they were acutely distressed and said to
Peter and the rest of the apostles, "What should
we do, brothers?"
Our Savior Paid the Price38 Peter said to them,
"Repent, and each one of you be baptized in the
name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your
sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Our Savior Paid the Price39 For the promise is for
you and your children, and for all who are far away, as many as the
Lord our God will call to himself."
Our Savior Paid the Price40 With many other words
he testified and exhorted them saying, "Save yourselves from this
perverse generation!"
Our Savior Paid the Price41 So those who accepted
his message were baptized, and that day about three thousand people were added.
Our Savior Paid the Price
What have we learned or been reminded of today?
It was proclaimed centuries before the fact that God would be born
as a human.
Our Savior Paid the PriceHe would be a just and fair
ruler sitting on King David’s throne. With His rule over God’s People, prosperity would abound
for eternity. This would be done because of God’s intense devotion to us.
Our Savior Paid the PriceMonths before the fact,
God’s angel announces to Joseph God’s baby will
save His people from their sins. This is going to happen to fulfill the prophecies of old.
Our Savior Paid the PriceThe night of the birth
God’s messenger announces to shepherds in the fields a Savior has been born, and this child
is The Christ.
Our Savior Paid the PriceWhen the price for sin had
been paid, 50 days after the Passover Feast, at the Feast
of Pentecost, the Lord’s apostle Peter stands up and
speaks to the crowd.
Our Savior Paid the PriceIt is as if he is shaking the
people saying, “Why can’t you see what Great Event
has taken place?” He reminds them God’s
predetermined plan had been carried out.
Our Savior Paid the PriceYou executed God’s
Chosen by handing him over to the Gentiles to be
nailed to a tree. Death was not strong enough to keep him so God raised
him from the grave.
Our Savior Paid the PricePeter remind them of the
Prophet, King David, who spoke about the one
they had murdered. David prophesied the grave would not keep
God’s Holy One.
Our Savior Paid the PricePeter pressed home the
fact Jesus who they murdered God had made
both Lord and Christ. The realization set in of
what they had done to the Messiah.
Our Savior is WaitingWhat could save them
now? They cry out to Peter, “What are we
going to do now?” Peter tells them to turn away
from their sins in repentance.
Our Savior is WaitingHe tells them to be
baptized in the name of Jesus Christ and their sins will be forgiven. Then they will receive
help from God’s Spirit as a gift.
Our Savior is WaitingFrom this one sermon about
3000 people did
what Peter told them and were added to the number
of believers.
Our Savior is DevotedMay we all take serious
note of our response to God’s intense devotion.
May it lead us to intense devotion to His Son who loved us, even
unto death.
