JMJ

13 April, 2016 My Dearest Parish Family,

God be with us always.

I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to all those who remembered, prayed, greeted and made me feel at home during my birthday week and even beyond. I spent my actual birthday, April 7, quietly reflecting on the past year, and praying for guidance and strength to strive to be who God wills me to be. The “Handog: A Celebration of Life” was a wonderful celebration. I shall be reporting ideally next week on the gifts we have been given in support of our projects here in the Church. Last Sunday, I received a text message telling me that the Church had been vandalized. I was so alarmed until it was clarified that someone wrote graffiti on one of the doors of the Parish Hall. What was written was very disrespectful to God. At first I was angry, but then after further reflection – I also thought that it was also an affirmation of what we are: A place where God is present. The person who wrote it has something really bad and disrespectful to say to our Loving God. He wrote it on our campus because he probably thought God will see it. Don’t get me wrong, I hope and pray there will be no more vandalism on our campus. The other point I would like to share is the encouragement for us to look after one another. Let us be the extra pair of eyes and ears for each other’s safety and well-being. We cannot discount that there are people whose misguided idealism

has led them to commit violent acts and even terrorism. Let us keep each other in prayer. Let us count on each other as much as the disciples counted on each other. Let us, as God’s flock – listen and hear the voice of Jesus Christ our Good Shepherd. God bless and take care. Love and prayers,

Fr. Thomas Paul K. Naval

Fourth Sunday of Easter Good Shepherd Sunday:

World Day of Prayer for Vocations

This Sunday celebrates Jesus as “the Good Shepherd.” When announcing this Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis focused on Jesus’ “lost sheep” parable in Luke. “[Who] among you,” Jesus asks, “having a hundred sheep and losing one of them would not leave the ninety-

nine in the desert and go after the lost one until he finds it?” (Luke 15:4). A reasonable answer? “No responsible shepherd who wants to keep the job!” Yet Jesus considers one lost person supremely important and suggests blaming the shepherd. The sheep didn’t “go astray,” the shepherd “lost” it. Thus, “when he does find it, he sets it on his shoulders with great joy” (15:5). That tender image of Jesus adorns the simple cross Pope Francis has always worn, the Good Shepherd gently carrying the lost sheep home on his shoulders. During this Jubilee Year of Mercy, may we, who once were lost ourselves but now are found, join Jesus in seeking, finding, and gently carrying home at least one precious lamb. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. Trip to the Holy Door Saturday, April 23rd at 1pm

Anyone interested in traveling to the Mission Basilica San Juan Capistrano to experience the Holy Door? A group of your fellow parishioners are gathering in the back parking lot at 1pm for a blessing by Fr. Thomas, form carpools, drive to Mission San Juan, and regroup in the parking lot at the Mission. Once we have regrouped, we will experience “passing from darkness into light” by walking through the Holy Door. Those in “condition” to gain the Indulgence will, as they prayerfully pass through the door. When all have passed through the door, we will regroup and begin an eleven station prayer journey, developed for the Year of Mercy. Our total time from Santiago to San Juan and back to Santiago will not be more than two hours. Conditions for the Indulgence: • A Catholic in good standing • Be in the state of grace • Have the interior detachment from sin, even venial

sin • Have sacramentally confessed your sins • Received the Holy Eucharist • Pray for the intentions of the Pope • The Indulgence can only be obtained once a day.

However, it can be applied to another person (living or deceased).

• Reconciliation and the Eucharist can be celebrated 20 days prior to the Indulgence.

char, a compar r, a soportar, a respetar, a ayudar.”
