Where do our contributions go?

When you serve a geo-graphical area as expansive as the Archdiocese of New York – from Staten Island, to New York City, and into Ulster, Duchess, and Sullivan Counties – you need reliable, streamlined infrastructure in place to accomplish the pas-toral, administrative, and charitable work of the organization. Thanks to your generous donations, parishes, ministries, and religious education pro-grams are staffed with nearly 1,000 exceptional leaders who serve the 2.7 million Catholics in the archdiocese.

Fr. Jacob

My Dear Parishioners,

When you think of a king coming before his people, the image of someone riding on a donkey does not come to mind. If the Lone Ranger had Silver and Roy Rogers had Trigger, a similar white stallion would seem most fitting for a king. Not an ass, even a purebred one. But this image from the prophet Zechariah is one that must have planted itself in the imagination of Jesus, for that is how he made his great entrance into Jerusalem and was greeted as the Messiah. It was not the entrance of a powerful warrior, but of a gentle king whose rule would bring peace to the nations. Sometimes the loss of St. Christopher from the calendar of saints seems regrettable. That legendary saint, whose name means “Christ-bearer,” signaled that the risen Lord had now chosen to be carried by his disciples. We bear him in our bodies, minds, and hearts. We bring him to the world when we work to bring peace and healing and knowledge of the Father. This necessitates being willing to take on the yoke of Jesus. I remember once hearing that the yokes Jesus made in the carpenter shop un-der Joseph’s guidance rode easily on the shoul-ders of the animals, distributing evenly the weight they pulled. The yoke Jesus offers us is his teach-ing about the kingdom of heaven and how to live in it while in the world. This means putting on his attitude and spirit of attentive listening for the will of the Father—home schooling in the best sense. Lord, give us the rest only you can give when we feel burdened by life’s labors and sor-rows. Open our hearts so that we learn from you to seek and accept the yoke that is easy. Give us the strength to help others with the burdens that weigh them down.

Keep smiling,

SAINT MARIA GORETTI - July 6 (1890-1902)

Does anything match a mother’s pride in her children? First Communions, confirma ons, gradua ons, weddings: how these delight a mother’s heart! Imag-ine, then, Assunta Gore , the only mother ever to a end her child’s canoniza on! In poverty-stricken rural Italy, widowed As-sunta tended fields for the Serenelli family, whose eighteen-year-old son, Alessandro, proposi oned her barely twelve-year-old Maria; then, when she resisted, crying, “It is a sin! God forbids it!” he stabbed her fourteen mes. As she lay dying, Maria assured the a ending priest, “Yes, I forgive Alessandro! I want him to be in Paradise with me someday.” Imprisoned, unrepent-ant, Alessandro changed a er dreaming that a radiant Maria had offered him four-teen lilies. “I’ve kept my promise,” she smiled. “You’ll be here with me someday.” Upon release, he rushed to beg Assunta’s forgiveness. “Jesus has forgiven you,” she replied, “my Maria, too. How can I refuse?” The next morning, mother and murderer walked arm in arm to church and knelt side by side for Communion.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Summer has truly arrived now, the pace of work slows, people begin to venture out, and some people drift away. There will be visitors in the churches again, but perhaps some familiar faces may still be “among the missing.” Some find the summer’s call more appealing than the summons of the church bells. Many, however, would not dream of missing a Sunday, and so they make their way to Mass despite difficulties and some-times in unfamiliar places, watching the lo-cals for clues as to where to sit, when to sit or stand. In answering the call, they keep the “sabbatical” rhythm of the Christian life: eve-ry seventh day, the Body of Christ assembles for worship. For centuries, there was no obligation to Sunday Mass in the sense of a written law, but Christians have always yearned to be to-gether on Sunday. In the city of Abitina, dur-ing a persecution by the Emperor Diocletian, a group of Christians were urged to stop worshiping together on Sundays. They re-sponded, “Then take our lives, for without the Sunday we cannot live.” By a curious co-incidence, the appointed readings today cen-ter us on thoughts of peace. On our Inde-pendence Day, the experience of worship sit-uates us in community, and evokes a com-mitment from us to be advocates of peace in all aspects of our society’s life.
