    Culture of Brazil:

Cultural map of the world according to theWorld Values Survey, describing Brazil as high in

"Traditional Values" and relatively balanced between "Survival" and "Self-Expression values".

The culture of Brazil presents a very diverse nature reflecting an ethnic and cultural mixingoccurred in the colonial period involving mostly Native Americans, Portuguese and Africans. Inthe late 19th and early 20th centuries Italian, German, Spanish, Arab and Japanese immigrantssettled in Brazil and played an important role in its culture, creating a multicultural andmultiethnic society.

As consequence of three centuries of colonization by the Portuguese empire, many aspects ofBrazilian culture are derived from the culture of Portugal. The numerous Portuguese inheritancesinclude the language, the predominant religion and the colonial architectural styles.[2] These

aspects, however, were strongly influenced by African and Native American traditions, as wellas those from other Western European countries.

[3] Some aspects of Brazilian culture are

contributions of Italian, German and other European immigrants.[4] Amerindian peoples andAfricans played a large role in the formation of Brazilian language, cuisine, music, dance andreligion.

This diverse cultural background has helped boast many celebrations and festivals that havebecome known around the world, such as theBrazilian Carnival and the Bumba Meu Boi. Thecolorful culture creates an environment that makes Brazil a popular destination for many touristseach year.

Language: The official language is Portuguese; the accent and the intonation, however, arevery different from what one hears in Portugal and other former Portuguese colonies. Some

people say that Brazilians speak Brazilian, just like Americans can say they speak American,

and not English. And there are also many Brazilians who are descendants of immigrants and who

speak German and Italian, especially in towns in southern Brazil. Museum of the Portuguese

Language in So Paulo, the first language museum in the world. Portuguese is spoken by

about 99% of the population, making it one of the strongest elements of national identity.

Minority languages are spoken throughout the nation. One hundred and eighty Amerindian

languages are spoken in remote areas and a number of other languages are spoken by immigrants

and their descendants. There are significant communities ofGerman (mostly the Hunsrckisch, a

High German language dialect) and Italian (mostly the Talian dialect, of Venetian origin)

speakers in the south of the country, both of which are influenced by the Portuguese language.

For that reason, Brazil also holds Amerindian influences in its culture, mainly in its food andlanguage. Brazilian Portuguese has hundreds of words of Native American origin, mainly fromthe Old Tupi language.

    Carnival:

The Brazilian Carnival is an annual festival held forty-six days before Easter. Carnivalcelebrations are believed to have roots in the pagan festival of Saturnalia, which, adapted toChristianity, became a farewell to bad things in a season of religious discipline to practicerepentance and prepare for Christ's death and resurrection.

Carnival is the most famous holiday in Brazil and has become an event of huge proportions. Thecountry stops completely for almost a weekand festivities are intense, day and night,

mainly in coastal cities. It can be said withoutfear of contradiction that the Carnival is anexplosion of Brazilian happiness. The Carnivalis one of the biggest and most popular festivalsin the country, and one of the biggest folkcelebrations in the world. It brings togetheremotions, creativity, colors, sounds, plasticityand much joy. In the months of February andMarch, this happiness takes over the streets, clubs and hotels, from the North to the

Brazilian cuisine:Brazilian cuisine, like Brazil itself, varies greatly by region. The natural crops available in each

    region add to their singularity.

Brazilian cooking, while it has many similarities with that of itsSouth American neighbors, is distinct and uniquely delicious.Stretching from the Amazon in the north, through the fertileplantations of the central coast and on to the southern pampas, the food of Brazil spans a unique mix of cultures and cuisines. The original population contributed popular ingredients like

cassava and guaran. African slaves influenced the cuisine ofthe coastal states, especially Bahia. And around the country, aPortuguese heritage is reflected in a variety of dishes.

Root vegetables such as cassava (locally known as mandioca, aipim, or macaxeira), yams, andpeanuts and fruits like aa, cupuau, mango, papaya, guava, orange, passionfruit, pineapple, andhog plum are among the local ingredients used in cooking. well as a lucrative export. Rice and beans are an extremely common dish, as are fish, beefandpork.

Some typical dishes are caruru, which consists

of okra, onion, dried shrimp and toasted nuts(peanuts and/or cashews) cooked with palm oiluntil a spread-like consistency is reached;feijoada, a simmered bean-and-meat dish; tutude feijo, a paste of beans and cassava flour;moqueca capixaba, consisting of slow-cookedfish, tomato, onion and garlic topped withcilantro; and chourio, a mildly spicy sausage.Salgadinhos, cheese buns, pastis and coxinhaare common finger foods, while cuscuz branco, milled tapioca, is a popular dessert. Brazil is also known for cachaa, popular native liquor used

    in the caipirinha.

The European immigrants (primarily from Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain and Portugal) wereaccustomed to a wheat-based diet, and introduced wine, leaf vegetables, and dairy products intoBrazilian cuisine. When potatoes were not available they discovered how to use the native sweetmanioc as a replacement. Lasagna and other pasta dishes are also very popular.

The national dish of Brazil, feijoada, contains black beans cooked with pork and many

    other elements.

Brazilian cuisine varies greatly by region. This diversity reflects the country's mix of native andimmigrants. This has created a national cooking style marked by the preservation of regionaldifferences. Since the colonial period, the Feijoada, directly linked to the presence of blacks inBrazilian land, has been the country's national dish. Lus da Cmara Cascudo wrote that, havingbeen revised and adapted in each region of the country, it is no longer just a dish but has becomea complete food. Visual arts

    Painting and sculpture

The oldest known examples of Brazilian art are cave paintings in Serra da Capivara NationalPark in the state ofPiau, dating back to c. 13,000 BC. In Minas Gerais and Gois have beenfound more recent examples showing geometric patterns and animal forms. One of the mostsophisticated kinds of Pre-Columbian artifact found in Brazil is the sophisticated Marajoarapottery (c. 8001400 AD), from cultures flourishing on Maraj Island and around the region ofSantarm, and statuettes and cult objects, such as the small carved-stone amulets calledmuiraquits, also belong to these cultures. Many of the Jesuits worked in Brazil under theinfluence of the Baroque, the dominant style in Brazil until the early 19th century. The Baroquein Brazil flourished in Bahia and Pernambuco and Minas Gerais, generating valuable artists likeManuel da Costa Atade and especially the sculptor-architect Aleijadinho.

In 1816, the French Artistic Mission in Brazil created the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts andimposed a new concept of artistic education and was the basis for a revolution in Brazilianpainting, sculpture, architecture, graphic arts, and crafts. A few decades later, under the personalpatronage of Emperor Dom Pedro II, who was engaged in an ambitious national project ofmodernization, the Academy reached its golden age, fostering the emergence of the firstgeneration of Romantic painters, whence Victor Meirelles and Pedro Amrico, that, amongothers, produced lasting visual symbols of national identity. It must be said that in BrazilRomanticism in painting took a peculiar shape, not showing the overwhelming dramaticism, fantasy, violence, or interest in death and the bizarre commonly seen in the European version, and because of its academic and palatial nature all excesses were eschewed.

    Architecture

Brazilian architecture in the colonial period was heavily influenced by the Portuguese Manuelinestyle, albeit adapted for the tropical climate. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the city ofOuroPreto in the state ofMinas Gerais contains numerous well-preserved examples of this style byartists such as Aleijadinho.

In later centuries, Brazilian architects were increasingly influenced by schools from othercountries such as France and the United States, eventually developing a style of their own thathas become known around the world. Artists such as Oscar Niemeyer have received much

acclaim, with the Brazilian capital Braslia being the most notable example of modern Brazilianarchitecture.

In recent decades, Brazilian landscape architecture has also attracted some attention, particularlyin the person ofRoberto Burle Marx. Some of this notable works are the Copacabana promenadein Rio de Janeiro and the Ibirapuera Parkin So Paulo.

    Literature

Machado de Assis, poet and novelist whose work extends for almost all literary genre, is widely

regarded as the greatest Brazilian writer.

Literature in Brazil dates back to the 16th century, to the writings of the first Portugueseexplorers in Brazil, such as Pro Vaz de Caminha, filled with descriptions of fauna, flora andnatives that amazed Europeans that arrived in Brazil. When Brazil became a colony of Portugal, there was the "Jesuit Literature", whose main name was father Antnio Vieira, a PortugueseJesuit who became one of the most celebrated Baroque writers of the Portuguese language. Afew more explicitly literary examples survive from this period, Jos Baslio da Gama's epic poemcelebrating the conquest of the Missions by the Portuguese, and the work of Gregrio de MatosGuerra, who produced a sizable amount of satirical, religious, and secular poetry. Neoclassicismwas widespread in Brazil during the mid-18th century, following the Italian style.

Brazil produced significant works in Romanticismnovelists likeJoaquim Manuel de Macedoand Jos de Alencar wrote novels about love and pain.

Ferreira Gullar and Manoel de Barros are two highly admired poets and the former hasalso been nominated for the Nobel Prize.

    Cinema and theatre

The Cinema has a long tradition in Brazil, reaching back to the birth of the medium in the late19th century, and gained a new level of international acclaim in recent years. Bus 174(2002), by

Jos Padilha, about a bus hijacking, is the highest rated foreign film at Rotten Tomatoes.OPagador de Promessas (1962), directed by Anselmo Duarte, won the Palme d'Or at the 1962Cannes Film Festival, the only Brazilian film to date to win the award. Fernando Meirelles'Cityof God(2002), is the highest rated Brazilian film on the IMDb Top 250 list and was selected byTime magazine as one of the 100 best films of all-time in 2005.The highest-grossing film inBrazilian cinema, taking 12 million viewers to cinemas, is Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands(1976), directed by Bruno Barreto and basead on the novel of the same name by JorgeAmado.Acclaimed Brazilian filmmakers include Glauber Rocha, Fernando Meirelles, JosPadilha, Anselmo Duarte, Walter Salles, Eduardo Coutinho and Alberto Cavalcanti.

    Theatre

Theatre was introduced by the Jesuits during the colonization, particularly by Father Jos deAnchieta, but did not attract much interest until the transfer of the Portuguese Court to Brazil in1808. Over the course of the 18th century, theatre evolved alongside the blossoming literaturetraditions with names such as Martins Pena and Gonalves Dias. Pena introduced the comedy ofmanners, which would become a distinct mark of Brazilian theatre over the next decades.

Theatre was not included in the 1922 Modern Art Week of So Paulo, which marked thebeginning of Brazilian Modernism. Instead, in the following decade, Oswald de Andrade wroteO Rei da Vela, which would become the manifesto of the Tropicalismo movement in the 1960s,a time where many playwrights used theatre as a means of opposing the Brazilian military

government such as Gianfrancesco Guarnieri, Augusto Boal, Dias Gomes, Oduvaldo ViannaFilho and Plnio Marcos. With the return of democracy and the end ofcensorship in the 1980s,theatre would again grow in themes and styles. Contemporary names include Gerald Thomas,Ulysses Cruz, Aderbal Freire-Filho, Eduardo Tolentinho de Arajo, Cac Rosset, Gabriel Villela,Mrcio Vianna, Moacyr Ges and Antnio Arajo.

    Music

Music is one of the most instantly recognizable elements of Brazilian culture. Many differentgenres and styles have emerged in Brazil, such as samba, choro, bossa nova, MPB, frevo, forr,

    maracatu, sertanejo, brega and ax.

    Samba

Samba is among the most popular music genres in Brazil and is widely regarded as the country'snational musical style. It developed from the mixture of Brazilian and African rythms brought byslaves in the colonial period and originated in the state of Bahia.[In the early 20th century, modern samba emerged and was popularized in Rio de Janeiro behind composers such as NoelRosa, Cartola and Nelson Cavaquinho among others. The movement later spead and gainednotoriety in other regions, particularly in Bahia and So Paulo. Contemporary artists includeMartinho da Vila, Zeca Pagodinho and Paulinho da Viola.

Samba makes use of a distinct set of instruments, among the most notable are the cuca, a frictiondrum that creates a high-pitched squeaky sound, the cavaquinho, a small instrument of the guitarfamily, and the pandeiro, a hand frame drum. Other instruments are the surdos, agogs, chocalhos and tamborins.

    Choro:

Choro originated in the 19th century through interpretations of European genres such as polkaand schottische by Brazilian artists who had already been influenced by African rythms such asthe batuque. It is a largely instrumental genre that shares a number of characteristics with samba.

Choro gained popularity around the turn of the century and was the genre of many of the firstBrazilian records in the first decades of the 19th century. Notable Choro musicians of that erainclude Chiquinha Gonzaga,Pixinguinha and Joaquim Callado. The popularity of choro steadlywaned after the popularization of samba but saw a revival in recent decades and remainsappreciated by a large number of Brazilians. There are a number of acclaimed Choro artists

Bossa nova is a style of Brazilian music that originated in the late 1950s.It has its roots on samba

but features less percussion, employing instead a distinctive and percussive guitar pattern. Bossanova gained mainstream popularity in Brazil in 1958 with the song Chega de Saudade, written byAntnio Carlos Jobim and Vincius de Moraes. Together with Joo Gilberto, Jobim and Moraeswould become the driving force of the genre, which gained worldwide popularity with the songGarota de Ipanema as interpreted by Gilberto, his wife Astrud and Stan Getz on the albumGetz/Gilberto. The bossa nova genre remains popular in Brazil, particularly among the upperclasses and in the Southeast.

    Economy:

The Economy of Brazil is the world's 7th by nominal GDP and eighth largest by purchasing

power parity. Brazil has moderately free markets and an inward-oriented economy. Its economyis the largest in Latin American nations and the second largest in the western hemisphere.

Brazil is one of the fastest-growing major economies in the world with an average annual GDPgrowth rate of over 5 percent. In Brazilian reais, its GDP was estimated at R$ 3.143 trillion in2009. The Brazilian economy has been predicted to become one of the five largest economies inthe world in the decades to come.

Brazil is a member of diverse economic organizations, such asMercosul, Unasul, G8+5, G20,WTO, and the Cairns Group. Its trade partners number in the hundreds, with 60 percent ofexports mostly of manufactured or semi manufactured goods. Brazil's main trade partners in

2008 were: Mercosul and Latin America (25.9 percent of trade), EU (23.4 percent), Asia (18.9percent), the United States (14.0 percent), and others (17.8 percent).

According to theWorld Economic Forum, Brazil was the top country in upward evolution ofcompetitiveness in 2009, gaining eight positions among other countries, overcoming Russia forthe first time, and partially closing the competitiveness gap with India and China among theBRICeconomies. Important steps taken since the 1990s toward fiscal sustainability, as well asmeasures taken to liberalize and open the economy, have significantly boosted the countryscompetitiveness fundamentals, providing a better environment for private-sector development.

The owner of a sophisticated technological sector, Brazil develops projects that range from

submarines to aircraft and is involved in space research: the country possesses a satellitelaunching center and was the only country in the Southern Hemisphere to integrate the teamresponsible for the construction of the International Space Station (ISS).

[20]It is also a pioneer in

    many fields, including ethanol production.

Brazil, together with Mexico, has been at the forefront of the Latin American multinationalsphenomenon by which, thanks to superior technology and organization, local companies havesuccessfully turned global. The annual Brazil Investment Summit takes place in So Paulo and is the largest gathering inBrazil of international investment experts covering opportunities in alternative vehicles, infrastructure, and advanced trading strategies.

With still high levels of inequality, though it has diminished in the last years, the Brazilianeconomy has become one of the major economies of the world. According to Forbes 2011,Brazil has the 8th largest number of billionaires in the world, a number much larger thanwhat is found in other Latin American countries, and ahead of even Japan

    Economic-History

When the Portuguese explorers arrived in the 15th century, the native tribes of current-dayBrazil, totaling about 2.5 million people, had lived virtually unchanged since the Stone Age.From Portugal's colonization ofBrazil (1500-1822) until the late 1930s, the market elements of

the Brazilian economy relied on the production of primary products for exports. Within thePortuguese Empire, Brazil was a colony subjected to an imperial mercantile policy, which hadthree main large-scale economic production cycles - sugar, gold and, from the early 19th centuryon, coffee. The economy of Brazil was heavily dependent on African enslaved labour until thelate 19th century (about 3 million imported African enslaved individuals in total). Since then,Brazil experienced a period of strong economic and demographic growth accompanied by massimmigration from Europe (mainly from Portugal, Italy,Spain and Germany) until the 1930s. Inthe Americas, the United States, Argentina, Brazil, and Canada (in descending order) were thecountries that received most immigrants. In Brazil's case, statistics show that 4.5 million peopleimmigrated to the country between 1882 and 1934.

Currently, with a population of 190 million and abundant natural resources, Brazil is one of theten largest markets in the world, producing tens of millions of tons of steel, 26 million tons ofcement, 3.5 million television sets, and 3 million refrigerators. In addition, about 70 millioncubic meters ofpetroleum were being processed annually into fuels, lubricants, propane gas, anda wide range of hundred petrochemicals. Furthermore, Brazil has at least 161,500 kilometers ofpaved roads and more than 93 Gigawatts of installed electric power capacity.

Its real per capita GDP has surpassed US$ 10,500 in 2008, due to the strong and continuedappreciation of the real for the first time this decade. Its industrial sector accounts for three fifthsof the Latin American economy's industrial production. The countrys scientific andtechnological development is argued to be attractive to foreign direct investment, which has

averaged US$ 30 billion per year the last years, compared to only US$ 2 billion per year lastdecade, thus showing a remarkable growth. The agricultural sector, locally called theagronegcio (agrobusiness), has also been remarkably dynamic: for two decades this sector haskept Brazil amongst the most highly productive countries in areas related to the rural sector. Theagricultural sector and the mining sector also supported trade surpluses which allowed formassive currency gains (rebound) and external debt pay down. Due to downturn in Westerneconomies Brazil found itself in 2010 trying to halt the appreciation of the real.
