Executive Summary

Three methods were used to collect career placement data for the 2014 graduating class: One-Year-Out Alumni Survey, HEDS Graduating Senior Survey, and LinkedIn search. The final combined sample from all three sources consists of 537 graduates; the participation rate/Knowledge Rate was approximately 84%. Gettysburg College baccalaureate outcomes as indicated by job placement and graduate school attendance continue to be very strong. Within a year after graduation, 95% of the Class of 2014 (included in this sample) reported being employed or attending graduate school (Class of 2013: 94%); 3% reported still seeking employment (Class of 2013: 4%). About 76% of those graduates who are employed full time reported an annual salary of $30K and above. Of those graduates who are attending graduate school: 41% pursue a doctoral degree; 55% pursue a master’s degree. Graduates work in a variety of fields across the nation. About 7 graduates work overseas (Japan, Spain, France, Poland, Ethiopia, New Zealand, and Germany).

Placement by Major and Broad Discipline was also provided in the report. To support the data needs of the institutional theme--diversity, placement by race/ethnicity was analyzed for the first time this year: Domestic students of color were less likely to report positive placement outcomes than other students (39/46=85% vs. 96%). An attempt was made to compare Gettysburg one-year-out career outcomes with those of comparison schools. As of July 9, 2015: Of the 6 colleges which are used as Gettysburg’s REACH institutions, 2 institutions (Bucknell & Hamilton) had published their Class of 2014 one-year-out career outcomes report. Of the 6 colleges which are used as Gettysburg’s LIKE institutions, only Union published their one-year-out outcomes report. Given the fact that the one-year-out career outcomes study data collection time frame were not standardized across colleges, the reader should take caution in making comparisons:

Class of 2014 Career Outcomes Study (Within a Year after Graduation)

Introduction

The 2014 graduating class one-year-out career outcomes study was based on analysis of data gathered from

three sources: the One-Year-Out Alumni Survey, HEDS Graduating Senior Survey, and LinkedIn. The data

collection for each source was described below.

One-Year-Out Alumni Survey: From March 30, 2015 to May 18, 2015, the Center for Career Development

(CCD) administered the on-line alumni survey to the 2014 graduating class. The major purpose of this annual

survey is to gather information on alumni employment status and graduate school attendance approximately

within a year after graduation (10-12 months). All alumni from this graduating class (list provided by the

Advancement Office) were sent an email invitation which contained the alumni survey link. 208 graduates took

the alumni survey, resulting in 33% survey response rate, which was similar to that of the previous class.

HEDS Graduating Senior Survey & LinkedIn: To obtain career outcomes information from as many graduates

as possible, for the third year, these two additional methods were used to collect data from graduates who did

not respond to the alumni survey. The HEDS senior survey was administered by the Institutional Analysis (IA)

Office to the graduating Class of 2014 in April 2014 (near graduation, during ta 2-week period). Those who

reported having accepted an employment position, or been accepted into graduate school (and would attend in

the fall) on the senior survey, but who did not take the alumni survey were included in the final sample. The

decision to use the graduating senior survey as a data source was based on the observed consistency between

senior survey positive placement responses and responses on the one-year-out alumni survey. For those

graduates who did not respond to the alumni survey, AND who did not report having accepted an employment

position or been accepted into graduate school on the senior survey, CCD and IA Office searched their LinkedIn

profiles and collected their employment and graduate school attendance information; of this group of graduates,

those who had an LinkedIn profile (at the point of the search; early June 2014) was included in the final sample;

those who did not have a LinkedIn profile (at the point of the search) were not included.

With information collected from these three sources (One-Year-Out Alumni Survey; HEDS Graduating Senior

Survey; LinkedIn), the participation rate/Knowledge Rate increased from 33% (alumni survey alone), to

approximately 84% (all three methods combined; final combined sample size=537). The final combined sample

was representative of the population in terms of gender, race, and academic major. Unless otherwise specified,

results contained in this report were based on analysis of data collected from these 537 graduates.

(full time or part time), below is their graduate degree information.

Class of 2014

*Includes M. D., D. O., Doctor or Veterinary Medicine. Also includes an extremely small number of Health Care Professional Doctorate: Doctor of

Chiropractic, Doctor of Physical Therapy, Doctor of Pharmacy.

Appendix B provides the graduate degree fields and degrees sought.

Annual Salary Range

Salary information was only available through the one-year-out alumni survey. Of those respondents who reported being

employed full time and reported their salary (n=99), below was their annual salary range: About 76% of these graduates

who are employed full time reported an annual salary of $30K and above (Average salary: $40,515; highest salary

reported: $90,000). Given the small sample, this information should be cautious in using this information.

Appendix A. Class of 2014 Career Outcomes (Within a Year After Graduation): Employer Information (A Sample)

Note: Three data collection methods were used (one-year-out alumni survey; HEDS senior survey; LinkedIn). Information was obtained from

approximately 84% of the Class of 2014 graduates (overall participation rate). 73% of theses graduates (n=390) are employed. Of the 390 graduates

who are employed (most of them full time; a handful part time), employer information was available for most of them (listed below alphabetically

by Major).

If a graduate had a double Major for his/her undergraduate study, he/she was listed under both Majors. Academic departments should use both

columns (Major 1 & Major 2) when using results. For overall placement by Major, see Page 5 of the report. If departments need to obtain the

Excel sheet of this list, or individual graduate informaiton (names), iplease contact Suhua Dong at Office of Institutional Analysis

Appendix B. Class of 2014 Career Outcomes (Within a Year After Graduation): Graduate School Information (A Sample)

Note: Three data collection methods were used (one-year-out alumni survey; HEDS senior survey; LinkedIn). Information was obtained from

approximately 84% of the Class of 2014 graduates (overall participation rate). 22% of these graduates (n=119) are attending graduate school.

Of the 119 graduates who are attending graduate school, below is their graduate school information which was listed alphabetically by Major.

If a graduate had a double Major for his/her undergraduate study, he/she was listed under both Majors. Academic departments should use

both columns (Major 1 & Major 2) when using results. For overall placement by Major, see Page 5 of the report. If departments need to

obtain the Excel sheet of this list, or individual graduate informaiton (names), please contact Suhua Dong at Office of Institutional Analysis

([email protected]).
