Dr.Rajan Varughese, Former Pro-Vice Chancellor of M.G University, Kottayam delivered keynote address, Prof.Justin George, Head of Department of Economics, St.Paul's College, Kalamassery felicitated the occasion. Riflesso is the reflection of the news, views and voice of the department of Economics and Political Science. The asset of the department is 184 vibrant students in graduation level and 3 dedicated teachers.The department is now crossing a milestone by releasing an annual newsletter.It aims to bring out the major achievements of the students, various programmes and activities of the Economics Association, Planning Forum and Human Rights Forum held during the academic year 2016 - 2017 The activities of the Economics Association and Planning Forum for the 2016-2017 were inaugurated by Dr.Sunikumar S.Menon, Head of the Department, Research Centre and Post Graduate Department of Economics, Maharajas College (Autonomous) Ernakulam on 23rd August 2016. Dr.Sunil Kumar S.Menon delivered a talk on'Career Choices for Economics Students'.The Hand written Manuscript 'Beacon' was released by the Principal, Rev. Sr.Rethamma on the occasion. Meritorious students of the department who secured highest marks in B.A Economics examination from the department honoured by Dr.Raji Joseph,Associate Professor Department of Commerce, St.Xavier's College For Women and Prof. Rani.K.A, Associate Professor, Department of Commerce, St.Xavier's College For Women, Aluva felicitated the occasion. Prizes for various competitions conducted by the department were distributed. The department of Political Science offered scholarship to students who secured highest marks in complimentary course in the U.G Degree (CBCSS) Examination, 2016. Mother Isabell Memorial All Kerala Inter CollegiatePaper Presentation on GST Bill in India, Prof. Rebecca MathenMemorial Debate on Uniform Civil Code:A Boon or a Bane? andthe Mega Mind, a Quiz on Current affairs was the competitionsconducted on 20th September 2016. Inter collegiate fest wasinaugurated by Smt. N. Nirmaladevi, Senior Branch Manager, LIC,Aluva, Keynote address delivered by Sri.Josemon M.D, ManagingDirector, FIT,Govt.of Kerala and Prof. Nithin Thomas, AssistantProfessor,BMC,Thrikkakara felicitated the occasion.

Ms.Archana Prakash of Alphonsa College, Pala and Ms.MeeraUnnikrishnan of St.Teresa's College Ernakulam won the prizes forPaper Presentation Competition. Joseph E George &Abi Georgeof UC college,Aluva secured the first prize and Ms.Rohini Menon&Devika Krishnan of St.Joseph College, Iringalakuada secured thesecond prize for Debate Competition. Regarding the Quizcompetition,Ms.Malavika &Aiswarya Lalu of our college won thefirst prize and Abi George & Rajesh P.R won second prize.Theprizes were distributed by Sr.Dr.Shalini and Prof.NithinThomas

The fourth Mother Mary Magdeline MemorialLecture instituted in fond memory and honour ofcollege foundress Mother Mary Magdeline wasorganized on 8th February 2017. Dr.ShyjanDavis, Assistant Professor, Department ofconomics, Dr.John Mathai Centre,University ofCalicut delivered the lecture on he topic 'PoliticalEconomy of Demonetisation in India '

As part of the Population day observance, Planning Forum ofthe Department of Economics conducted an Inter DepartmentalQuiz Competition on 'Demography or Population of India andEssay Competition on the topic 'Population growth: an Asset orLiability' on 11th July 2016 at 1.p.m in Economics seminar hall .Meenakshi Kumar & Alan Minnu Xavier of II B.com, Fasna T.A &Sonia Joseph of III DC Chemistry and Ashly Paul & Nandana.B ofII DC English Literature won First, Second and Third Prizesrespectively for Quiz competition. For Essay competition, Ms.Sweety Joseph of III DC Commerce, Ms. Premeeja Ann Eliza of IIDC English and Swathy G Prabhu of II DC Commerce SelfFinancing won First,Second andThird Prizes respectively.

As per the direction of OSAX the department of Economicsorganised Two Special Session on "Role of Mental Health inPersonality Development and "Why Economics Matter" by thetwo Eminent Alumni of the department (Sr.VimalGrace,Principal,Karuna Special School,Vypin and Ms.Elna James,Research Analyst Health Systems Research India Initiative,Trivandrum) on 14th November 2016.

· Under the auspices of the Research Promotion Council ofthe College,the departments of Economics and Political Science inassociation with College Library organised a Research Talk on“Demystifying Academic Plagiarism” by Mr. Jasumudheen,Librarian,St.Stephen's College, Uzhavoor on 9th December 2016

As part of the AcademicWeek Celebrations, the departmentof Economics and Political Science organized a session on 'Impactof Social Media on Youth' by Sr.Rubini CTC, BroadcastingJournalist,GoodnessT.V and Radio Maria

As part of MOU, the department in association withDepartment of Economics, St.Paul's College Kalamassery jointlyorganized a Lecture on 'Career Opportunities in Economics' bySri. Saju Surendran IES, Deputy Development Commissioner,Cochin Special Economic Zone,Cochin on 13th January 2017 andalso a Lecture on 'Modernity, Epistemology and Politics: AnExercise in Theory Building 'by Dr.K.Ravi Raman Member, KeralaState Planning Board on 14th February 2017 at St.Paul's CollegeKalamassery.

As per the new policy decision of the Government of India,Students of the department gave an awareness campaign on'Cashless Economy' to the general public. They were taught todownload the apps,newly introduced by Government of India andSBI such as BHIM,UPI,Mobile wallet etc.,

The Department conducted an awareness campaign on“PlasticFree Campus Mission” on 25th January 2017 by introducing andgiving 'Paper pen' to Principal,teachers and students.

The Planning Forum of the department organized a Careerorientation session for IIIDC Students by Ms.Nija and otherteachers from Vidhyabharathi group of institutions on 2ndFebruary 2017.

As part of the MoU with Finmark trainers, the department incollaboration with Department of Commerce (Regular and Selffinancing) organized a Mentoring session for all the students ofthe department in class wise on 'Fundamentals of Capital Market'on 13th February 2017 followed by a Training session for thestudents who wish to attended the session from 16th to 17thFebruary 2017 by Finmark trainers, the well known trainers inIndia. To develop latent entrepreneurship skill of the Students, thePlanning Forum of the Department of Economics in associationwith Kudumbasree Mission Units, Aluva organized an'Entrepreneurship Exhibition Cum Sale' titled as Eco Mega Mela-2016 on 18th August 2016 from 11 a.m to 2.p.m in the XavieranCampus.

The department designed an MOU with Department ofEconomics, St.Paul's College situated at Kalamassery on 10thJune 2016 to enhance the academic and non academic quality ofstudents and to increase their potentialities and skills by themutual cooperation of the faculties of both departments of thecolleges.

· The department has signed an MOU with ErnakulumSocial Service Society on 1st December 2016.The objective ofMOU is to promote the participation of Faculty and Students inthe community development activities of the Ernakulam SocialService Society (ESSS) which is committed to promote, supportand sustain the socio-economic and developmental initiatives ofthe poor and the marginalized through social mobilization,empowerment and decentralization thereby to build up the socialcommitment and responsibility of students towards the

maginalised section of society.

· The Department has given consultancy service to aproject undertaken by Health Department ofAluva Municipality asa part of Swatch Bharat Mission. The Department offered“Consultancy services of population projection up to 2031”andprepared a report based on the analysis of data. It is done as aservice and hence no income is generated.

Five students of department participated in the UGCSponsored National Seminar on Entrepreneurship Development:Opportunities and Challenges organised by Department ofEconomics, Bharata Mata College,Thrikkakara from 5th to 6thSeptember 2017.

The department organized a Mentoring session with Parentsof the students of the department which is one of best practice ofthe department on 31st October 2016 at economic seminar hall.The practice was initiated to ensure better involvement ofparents in the academic and personal formation of the studentsand to provide the parents a platform to closely involved in theacademic and campus life of the students to track theirperformances/deviations.

The Meeting of the Alumni of the department of Economicswas organized on 26th November, 2016. The former facultymembers of the department Prof. Thankam K.B, Prof. InduPanikkar , all the Student and Staff together inaugurated thegathering by lighting the lamp .KumariAnila.V.P selected as Queenof the (Economics) day. Quiz and Brain storming sessions werealso conducted.

Based on the agenda, the following activities were done:

The Executive members were entrusted to come for the meetwith NACC peer team when they come for the visit.

Instituted StudentsWelfare Fund for the needy students in thename of OSTAXED (Old Students andTeachersAssociation ofXavieran Economics Department) StudentsWelfare Fund.

On behalf of OSTAXED,Prof. Indu Panikkar planted sapling ofa Mango tree on the ground of the college.

The department organized a tour package to Mysore andCoorg for FinalYear Degree Students from 11th January to 14thJanuary 2017.

The department gave a heartiest sent off to the Final year outgoing students on 7th March 2017.The junior students organizedthe farewell ceremony which was an unforgettable event in themind of III B.A students.
