Tom Rigney and Flambeau. Take some time to enjoy the music of some of the new bands like On Air and Red’s Blues. I am hopeful we have music for every taste.

Now let’s talk about money. Last year, some different numbers surfaced as to how we did at the last years fes-tival. We track our budget by the year but break it down by activity, such as Jazz Sunday and the Music Festival. In 2014, the Music Festival was seriously in the red. At that time, we decided to make some changes to reduce costs and also ask for donations from the members. You came through and we ended the year slightly in the black. So where are we now? Revenue is start-ing to flow, and from last year, we are over 30% ahead of last year in dollars collected from ticket sales. It’s early yet, but a positive is always good.

We will be participating in the “Big Day of Giving” (a.k.a. BIG DoG). During that time, many of the non-profits create online profiles, and ask for donations. I am hoping we get some traction from this with the local companies and donors. More to follow. Meanwhile, learn more about it here: https://bigdayofgiving.org 2

I am extremely excited about the 2015 Sac. Music Festival. Our

Talent Selection Committee has done a phenomenal job putting together some of the best talent available while staying at a cost that we can afford. We certainly have not compromised on quality. Todd Bibby, Julie Deter, Kat Coffey and Dave Becker have really pulled out the impossible in my view. This festival will have music for everyone, with the International All-Stars (thanks to Janet Young), Stephanie Trick & Paulo Alderighi Double Trio (thanks to Ingrid Wol-bart), Sister Swing (thanks to Mark and Meredith Henderson).

If you enjoy any other genre of music, there will be something for you. One of our headliners is Tower of Power, and by the way tickets are selling will be a sellout. Malo will also be performing at Firehouse Lot, and his music should appeal to a much broader demo-graphic. If you like country music, then this is your festival with Glori-ana, Deke Dickerson, Chris Gard-ner and others. If you like blues and rock, certainly there are many bands that will appeal to you. And of course, let’s not forget our favorite in zydeco,

President’s Messageby Dave Becker STJS PRESIDENT

< d ave @ s a c j a z z . co m >

Another month has passed. Like I said before, where did it .go? I wish I could remember just half of what I did in

March; that would be great. The 2015 Sacramento Music Fes-tival is going full blast thanks to Tom Duff, Dennis Grimes, and Talent Selection Committee. I really don’t know when Tom sleeps, and I am getting emails from him all day and night long.

Joe Cruz (Construction Crew) has started working to make sure that the panels, dance floors and everything else are in good shape before the Music Festival. They check, repair and repaint everything and anything that needs it.

I would like to thank all the Jazz Sundays volunteers; they put in long hours on that day: the Judy Hendricks and the Set Up/Sound Crew, Carol Fusaro (Main Room), Paula Dula (Gold Card Room), Jane Reinmuth (Tailgate Room), Admissions/Memberships, Joy Skalbeck and her volunteers (Musician/Volunteer sign-up), the Raffle Lady (Kathy Becker) and Nancy Giffin (Photographer). Bob Ringwald is Guest Artist Coordina-tor and finds musicians for the Main Stage, and Mark Kramer does the printed program each month. If not for them, it wouldn’t run as smoothly as it does.

HELP!!!!! Members that have computers and email addresses but are still asking to receive “And All That Jazz” newsletter in the mail, I need your help. I would like to remove your name from the list of mailed newsletters. It is costing the Jazz Society $2.17 per newsletter to copy and send out each month to the members via the U.S. Postal Service (snail-mail). I would really like to cut the amount of newsletters sent out to members by lim-iting this service to those who DO NOT have a computer. There are a couple of ways to obtain the newsletter online: 1) Visit http://sacjazz.org, then click the link where you see an image of the “AATJ” cover, or 2) on the website’s Home Page, on the left hand side under “About STJS,” click on “AATJ” newsletter; this link takes you to the “AATJ” Archives where you can down-load current or previous copies of the newsletter dating back to 2010. While on the website, please sign up for SacJazz-E-News by clicking the link that says “Sign up here for our e-mail list.” (Top-left corner of the page.) If you are not receiving your SacJazz-E-News, please look in your Junk Mail folder of your e-mail section, and move it into your Inbox (“not junk mail”). Thank you all for your support and assistance. — Dave 2

Mike Lipskin (cont.)also one of the few writing new pieces in this vibrant full jazz piano sound, some of which can be heard on his recordings for Buskirk Productions and Downtown Records. He’s played Carnegie Hall, Davies Symphony Hall, 92nd Street “Y” and Newport Jazz Festival, and appeared in the jazz documentary film, “A Great Day In Harlem,” nominated for an academy award. He helped edit and supplied his rare photos for a book of the same subject, “The Great Jazz Day”. Lipskin also helped produce, comments and appears in an American Public TV documentary on Willie The Lion Smith. He was music director for and performed in eight”Stride Summit” concerts at San Francisco’s Davies Symphony Hall and Masonic Auditorium; SF Jazz, the last one occurred in August 2013. He performed with Woody Allen and Dick Hyman in New York City and had a 23 concert European tour in conjunction with his first release on the Swiss label, Down-town Records. Lipskin has five recordings to his credit and working on his next project for Buskirk Records. In the words of the Los Angeles Times jazz critic, Leonard Feather, “Lipskin displays the virtues of technique, soul, fresh-ness, and the spirit of youth in his flawless interpretations of Stride pieces.” The late, great Eubie Blake also confirmed that

“Mike Lipskin plays Stride bass with perfect accuracy.” The legendary record producer, Jerry Wexler, adds: “He’s fantastic ‘cause first of all, he’s got chops, he doesn’t fumble, he’s got that stride thing.” Fats Waller’s guitarist, Al Casey, when hearing Lipskin’s latest CD exclaimed, “I think I’m with Fats right now.” Eubie Blake, Jim Hessian, Mike Lipskin, Terry WaldoBorn in New York, Mike first fell in love with Waller records from his father’s collection when he was 4 years old and was hooked on the style from then on. By the time he was in high school he was traveling to Harlem, learning from the remaining Stride masters such as Willie The Lion Smith, Luckey Roberts, Cliff Jackson, and the amazing Donald Lambert. Mike was a producer at RCA Records, New York. During his 13 years there he produced historical reissues for the Vin-tage Series, developed engineering skills and improved a widely acclaimed analogue technical process for rehabilitation of ancient recordings. He also produced new albums by artists such as Lighthouse, Gil Evans, Blue Mitchell, Cedar Walton, Lonnie Liston Smith, Roger Troy and Ryo Kawasaki edited, mixed, and mastering product by Chet Atkins, Sam Cooke, Elvis Presley, Jefferson Airplane, Brian Auger, Duke Elling-ton, Erroll Garner, Dizzy Gillespie, among others. We really need applicants for the adult camp. The youth camp is almost full: room for 2 pianos, 2 basses and 2 banjo/gtr. Application deadline is April 15, but if someone plays one of these needed instruments,

they should apply even if it’s after the deadline.

FIRST, these important messages:

ELKS LODGE - IMPORTANT NOTES re. Jazz Sundays:

On June 14, the Tailgate Room will temporarily be in the Game Room instead of the usual Emblem Room.

On July 12, the Elks has a wedding scheduled, so Jazz Sunday will be on the 3rd Sunday, July 19 instead.

The dancers in March had fun. The people watching the dancers had fun. The musicians playing for the dancers had fun. We all

had fun fun fun — in the sun, sun, sun, unfortunately. No rain! We were all pining for the pounding rain we whined about last month, but that’s a different issue. Here we’re going to talk MUSIC, of which we had about 100 individual practitioners (give or take an extra reed player or an overlooked vocalist or two). That’s a lotta musicians, all intent on entertaining you, me and the dancers!

We started with the 2014-15 incarnation of the Syncopating Sea-Monkeys, directed by Felicia Greenwood Weatherly. The 14-17 year-olds from River City H.S. in West Sac are Jermaine Monroe on

trumpet AND trombone; Spencer Nyberg on trumpet AND trombone; guitarist AND vocalist Lauren Evans; saxophonist Ray Freeman; pianist TJ Brown; guitarist Will Chan; bassist Maya Monce; vocal-ist Alicia Lopez; and drummer Ishmael Morales. Listening with your eyes closed, it’s hard to believe these musicians are still fledglings. Good work on all fronts! (That’s 9 musicians, by the way.)

Guest Artist Robert Young was an eye opener for some. I guess we’d say he’s best known for his bass sax, but he was all OVER the stage on Sunday, playing piano (“In a Mist,” for Pete’s sake), cornet AND bass sax, and doing a whole lotta singing (for example, “Get Out and Get Under the Moon”). Did you hear that he’s an alumnus of bona fide STJS Royalty Jerry Kaehele’s Good Time Levee Stompers?!

Robert Young was joined by Bob Sakoi, Bob Williams, Darrell Fernandez and Vince Bartels on his first set and Renard Perry, Jay Paulus, Mickey Bennett and Gene Copelan on the second (and Bob Ringwald on both sets). (That’s 10 more musicians.) Bob Sakoi, by the way, said he’s been on the road non-stop lately, neglecting his businesses for love of music. He said he thinks he slept at home at the most 5 times in February. Life on the road... we’re loaded with sympathy, Bob. (I don’t think so!)

Main Stage Set 3 was BIG! It was Grant Pyle’s Moonlight Swing Living History Big Band. Twenty guys: Pyle, Mike Geach, John Brunett, Renard Perry, Maurice Spencer, Terry Shane,

Vince Warm, Mark Curry, Douglas Davies, Robert Mitchell, Carl Kaiser, Kurt Guemmer, Dan Anglim, Jerry VanDer Beek, Chris Lee, Mark Kramer, Stan Stewart, Kit Bailey, Larry Sikorski and Chris Shane. So, that’s 4 trumpets, 5 reeds (1 doubling on flute), 5 ‘bones, piano, guitar, bass, drums and 2 vocalists – 20, right? The dancers went wild! (Well, they liked them a lot, anyway.) A special shout-out to the Sound/Stage Crew, which managed to get the band on stage and mic’d in under 20 minutes — wow!

We’ll also give a special shout-out to Larry Sikorski, who came and sang in spite of being SICK and on antibiotics, showing a combi-nation of skill and dedication.

Elinor Hackett confided that she first met Grant Pyle and wife Shirley back in 1954 when Grant Pyle and Elinor’s husband, Don, were going to school on the GI Bill. They were all living in the Married Vets Housing on the Sac City College campus. Shirley and Elinor both had their first kids while living there.

Bouncing over to the Gold Card Room, there were auditions to start the day (see Paula’s report elsewhere), then Set 1 with Ken Champion, Jack Mootz, Carl Kaiser, Pearl Nicolino, Eddi Benja-mini, Jack Scott and Dave Rietz for the Trad Set. (We’ll call that 6 more musicians, since Carl was in Moonlight Swing.) The “Second Trad Set” was led by Charlie Gehlbach, with Jay Paulus, Dominic Ruggieri , Todd Morgan, Jimmy Spero, Mickey Bennett and Jim

Laveroni (7). Set 3 featured — okay, approximately — 20 vocalists, backed up by Ken Meyers, Alan Ginter, Jim Roberson, Dave Rietz and Charlie Hull (5). It appears from notes that GCR 4 consisted of Dick Lockwood, Ned Poffinbarger, Dave Sieber and Tony Bellac-era, for 4. TNT impressed everyone on Set 5: Eric Treadwell led, with Olivia Flournoy, Parker Weis, Duncan McElroy, “Shoeless Jackson” Stafford, Simon and Gabriel Anuszczyk, Timmy Voet and Joanna Koford on board. (9, right?) Great job, Bob Williams!

Roberson to Laveroni re. cymbals: “That 17-inch my Mother bought for me when I was 12, and Jake Hanna once tried to buy it from me.” Name dropper!

This is probably a good time to tell you that Breanna Rodgers’ Girl Scout Gold Project “Celebration of Music” went off without a hitch. It featured five local “Next Gen” bands, including TNT. The other bands were: Next Gen Jazz Kids, The Grady Bunch, River City Swingers, and Trad Reputation. Four instruments were donated for STJS Foundation’s “Instrument Match” program. There were yummy sandwiches from Jackson Catering, a raffle, and a final jam session that the young musicians probably would have liked to have gone on the rest of the day! A really fun day, lots of praise from the musicians for Breanna, their Fearless Leader, who then capped it all by sending charming thank you notes to all her volunteers. Real class! We hope this becomes an annual event. (Continued on page 8)

17th annual STJS “RENT PARTY”Jan. 11, 2015

Page 8: A rare talent! Harlem Stride pianist Mike Lipskin at April 12 Jazz ...

8 April 2015

Jane Reinmuth had enough musicians sign up in the Tailgate that she filled out six sets, starting with newbie Bob Hoffman. So glad to see Howard Pearson after such a long absence. We had Dick Lockwood and Parker Weis, Arthur Eriks-son, Jimmy Spero, Dave Sieber, Greg Ayala and Claude Purcell. (I’m calling that 5 because Lockwood, Weis, Spero and Sieber were counted earlier.) Then, we had Ken Champion (he had to jog over from Set 1 in GCR), Weis, Thomas Monce, Montana Monce, Dave Rees, Tony Bellacera, Bev Ludlow and Rietz. (All but 4 on the list before.) Lee Monthei and Jared Blum co-led Set 3, with Pearson, Bernie Torres and Ruggieri, Billie Menz, Nicolino, Sieber, Shelby Janes, Aiko Hamaguchi and Jane Reinmuth. (7.) Bernie is a reed player, new to us but well known and respected around town.

TG 4 had Gehlbach, Larry Tyrell, Lockwood mentoring Cath-erine Treadwell, Eriksson, Poffinbarger, Sieber, Carl Warmdahl and Reinmuth. (That’s a max of 3.) Gehlbach also led TG 5, with Mootz, Janes, Laveroni, and four reeds – Gene Mondro, Eriks-son, Ruggieri, and Gary Sharpe. (2.) Gary Sharpe said he has been taking clarinet lessons for the last 11-12 months because, “he wants to keep this music alive”! Be still my heart!!!

Speaking of keeping this music alive, tell every school band direc-tor you know that Dave Robinson has made it possible for anyone to receive a Traditional Jazz Curriculum Kit, a FREE package of materials in CD-ROM form. Visit this website for all the details: https://jazzednet.org/tradjazzproject

Gary Sharpe was also one of the dancers doing the shim sham in the Main Room. His cohorts included Kerry Seitz, Patrick Owen (Todd Morgan’s guitar player!), Jackie Ngo, R.J. Raylor, Carly Narlesky and Alexandra Barsotti! Absolute FUN. (Thanks to Board Member and Midtown Stomp entrepreneur Scott Kaufman for nudg-ing them in our direction, using Moonlight Swing as bait.)

The Tailgate wound up the day with Monthei and Tom Smith, Tyrell, Mondro, Menz, Phil Anderson, Eddie Galvan and Ludlow. (That’s 3 new names.) Phil Anderson said he is an off-and-on banjo player. Keep it going, Phil! Eddie Galvan explained that he played a little rock guitar back in the day, and then heard Ellington, loved it, and is now “working on being a jazz guitarist.”

It was — pretty much as usual — freezing in the bar area. Thomas Fairley explained it all for me. He was once a bouncer/bodyguard in San Francisco. He pointed out that all that neon behind the bar could really heat the place up, and CalOSHA insists that the bartenders’ work place be comfortable, so the air conditioning is cranked up to keep them from sweltering – and us, well, just this side of icicles. At least now we know why we’re getting frostbitten. (Bring sweaters.)

Elk-mother-and-daughter team of Christine and Carmella were enjoying their first Jazz Sunday experience. Meanwhile, if you saw Geri Eckert sporting a sling, it was the result of rotator cuff repair. Look for Geri to appear on vocals for one of the Main Stage sets in April.

(Cont. from page 9) So – forgive my squishy math – we were mighty close to 100 per-formers. Way over if we count all the dancers, and I think we ought to, don’t you? Don’t count us out yet!

We are sad to report, however, that very long time Gold Card Member Jim Lenhart died recently. Our deepest sympathy goes to daughter Kathy Maldonado and the rest of Jim’s family. He was buried at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery.

A memorial service for Alan Anderson, of Alan and Ellen on the Art Department, was rife with tributes from Troop 226 Scouts.

Do you remember we talked in October and November about sup-porting the effort to persuade San Juan Unified’s allocation of funds to build a performance center at Rio Americano? Well, Rio Band Director Josh Murray reports that the SJUSD Board voted unan-imously to fund the project. Expect to be attending concerts in an elegant, small theatre sometime next year! Good work!

Did you SEE? Tom Rigney & Flambeau was on a special for KVIE! And Becky Kilgore is on the cover of The American Rag for March. I’m headed to the Bay Area for Natural Gas Jazz Band’s 45 Anniversary Party – 45! That’s Amazing!

Guy and Margie Weybright were sporting St. Patty’s Day garb, and reminded us that everybody at STJS used to dress up for every holiday. Without Guy and Margie, and Kathy Becker’s Raffle Table, we wouldn’t have had any wearin’ o’ the green at all. Theirs were not the “Best T-shirt” of the day, however. That belonged to Conrad Decastro: “Here I Am. What are your other two wishes?” Bob Wil-liams had to be restrained from filching it!

Did you make it to Eureka for Redwood Coast’s 25th go-round? And, hellooooo, guess what else is barreling down the track toward us? 2015 Sacramento Music Festival! Do you have your tickets? OR do you have your volunteer assignment? Either way, see you there!

And I am SO excited to have Harlem Stride aficionado Mike Lipskin as our April Guest Artist. He was a protégé of Willie the Lion Smith and Eubie Blake. Prepare for some smoke to come off the keyboard! (He’s also an attorney, but we’re not going to hold that against him.) 2

Found &Presumably Lost

by Judy Hendricks STJS VOLUNTEER

Several items will be shipped off to Value Village or Salva-tion Army soon if not claimed, but we do have a couple of

new items that we’ll give you a chance to claim. For instance, from TJYBF, a very nice black sport jacket with white leather sleeves, with a patch that says, “Football League Player, Uni-versity Champions; Pride & Glory” on one sleeve and “Heri-tage 60” on the other. I’ll bet your Mother is MAAAD that you lost that. (If you know who it belongs to, call and tell them.)

I also have: a Boys’ XL Kings sweatshirt; a Rapco Horizon Company Low Noise Instrument Cable with a white Northridge Music Center sheath on one end; a pair of purple leopard-spot-ted glasses with a matching holder; a pair of xylophone (I think) mallets from TJYBF. Also, a beaded earring (you know who you are). Please get the word out to other students.

This is last call for several clothing items from 2014 Jazz Camp, along with a pair of generic readers.

Call the office at 916.444.2004, and they will put you in touch with me, or leave a voice mail for me at 916.641.5781. Or, the items will be at the April 12 Jazz Sunday. Remember, retrieval is on the honor system. 2
