Grasslands cover about one quarter of the earth’s land mass and are called by many different names. In South America they are called Las Pampas

RHEA(Rhea americana)Range: South America from northeastern Brazil southward to Argentina, and Peru southward to PatagoniaFast Facts: Fourth largest of all birds; up to 4ft (1.2m) tall and 50 lbs. (23kg) Males build the nest, incubate the eggs and raise the young.

BROWN PELICAN(Pelecanus occidentalis)Range: Atlantic and Pacific coasts of North and South America.Fast Facts: The only species of pelicans that dive into water to catch their prey. Most pelicans on exhibit here have sustained wing injuries in the wild and can no longer fly. Exhibited with permission of the US Fish and Wildlife Service.

SOUTH AMERICAN TAPIR(Tapirus terrestris)Range: BrazilFast Facts: Weigh up to 650 lbs. (296kg) Babies are striped and spotted. Threatened in the wild by hunting and habitat destruction.

ALDABRA TORTOISE(Geochelone gigantea)Range: Aldabra Island (just north of Madagascar)Fast Facts: Shell up to 5ft (1.5m) in length; can weigh over 500 lbs (227kg); can live well past 100 years. Communal by nature. Abundant and well protected in their native habitat.

ALPACA(Vicugna pacos)Range: Domesticated in western South America.Fast Facts: Gestation 11.5 months. Baby alpacas are referred to as crias. Alpacas have been known to use humming as a means of communication.

The largest game reserve in western Zimbabwe, Hawange National Park is located between Bulawayo and the widely noted Victoria Falls.

WHITE-HANDED GIBBON(Hylobates lar)Range: Southeast Asia Fast Facts: Color can range from tan to dark brown. Gibbons are the only primates which, like humans, move upright on two legs while running or walking.

GRANT’S ZEBRA(Equus burchelli bohmi)Range: East African plainsFast Facts: Stripes are like fingerprints - they are unique to each individual. Not as fast as a race horse but easily have more stamina.

GIRAFFE(Giraffa camelopardalis)Range: Dry savanna and open woodland south of the Sahara DesertFast Facts: Tallest land mammal; height up to 17 ft. (5m) Long prehensile tongue can extend its reach by 15 in. (38cm)

CHIMPANZEE(Pan troglodytes)Range: Forest and rainforests of central AfricaFast Facts: Weigh up to 175 lbs. (80kg) Life expectancy 60 years. Most closely related primate to humans. We share 97% of our DNA makeup with them.

SOUTHERN WHITE RHINOCEROS(Ceratotherium simum simun)Range: Open plains and bushveldt of southern Africa.Fast Facts: Weigh up to 2.5 tons (2300kg); life expectancy is 40 years. Eyesight is poor, but have excellent senses of hearing and smell. Unlike their cousin, the black rhino, they are reasonably docile animals.

NILGAI(Boselaphus tragocamelus)Range: Eastern Pakistan, IndiaFast Facts: Largest Asian antelope. Males called “blue bulls” due to their slate-grey coat color. Females are brown and lack horns. Both sexes have black and white striped “socks”.

BLACKBUCK(Antilope cervicapra)Range: IndiaFast Facts: One of the smallest members of the antelope family at 3 ft. (1m) tall. Extensively hunted in India. More abundant in captivity than in the wild.

ASIATIC WATER BUFFALO(Bubalus arnee)Range: AsiaFast Facts: Up to 1.5 tons (1400kg) Life expectancy - 25 years. Widely domesticated. Few truly wild specimens remain.

ELAND(Taurotragus oryx)Range: Eastern Africa, south to South Africa. Fast Facts: Largest of the African antelopes. Bulls are larger than cows; weighing up to 1 ton (910kg). Both sexes have horns. Eland are excellent jumpers, despite their size.

This preserve is named for one of the most famous east African wildlife areas: the Serengeti

WILDEBEEST(Connochaetes taurinus)Range: Open grasslands, eastern to southern AfricaFast Facts: Gigantic herds of millions of animals migrate biannually to find food and water. Calves are able to run with their mothers shortly after birth. You will see more Wildebeest in the Hwange National Park.

WATERBUCK(Kobus ellipsiprymnus)Range: Africa, south of the Sahara DesertFast Facts: Males have horns, females without. Both sexes identified by the “target-like” pattern on their rumps. Elude predators by submerging in water up to their nostrils.

WATUSI(Bos taurus)Range: Eastern AfricaFast Facts: Wild ancestors were “aurochs” from western Europe and Asia. Horns may span 10 ft. (3m).

GREATER KUDU(Tragelaphus strepsiceros)Range: Eastern and southern AfricaFast Facts: Second largest antelope, weighing up to 690 lbs. (313kg) Spinal crest in both male and female; beard on male only. Horns curl around 2.5 times, and average 4 ft. (1.2m) long. Browses on many kinds of leaves, herbs, fallen fruits, vines, tubers, succulents, and flowers, sometimes varied with a little new grass.

The Kalahari Bushveldt is a dry plateau roughly 100,000 (259,000 km2) square miles in size located in southwest Africa.

OSTRICH(Struthio camelus)Range: African grasslands south of the Sahara desert.Fast Facts: World’s largest living birds; up to 8 ft. (2.4m) in height. Contents of one ostrich egg equivalent to 2 dozen chicken eggs.

SCIMITAR-HORNED ORYX(Oryx dammah)Range: Extinct in the wild, former range arid northern Africa.Fast Facts: There are currently efforts and plans to ultimately reintroduce this species to suitable, secure, protected areas. Lion Country Safari is currently involved in a study examining and quantifying genetic diversity in large captive herds to help with future conservation breeding!

Located in northern Mozambique, the Gorongosa Reserve is one of Africa’s famous wildlife areas.

AFRICAN LION(Panthera leo)Range: Central AfricaFast Facts: Males up to 500 lbs. (227kg)with a mane. Gestation 100 days; 1-6 cubs per litter. Live in family groups called prides. Females do most of the hunting. Males protect the pride and defend its territory.

Ruaha National Park is an unspoiled African wilderness is known for its variety of wildlife, including Impala and Greater Kudu.

MARABOU STORK(Leptoptilos crumeniferus)Range: Throughout tropical Africa, south of the Sahara.Fast Facts: These storks tend to congregate around fishing villages, slaughter houses, and garbage dumps. Their numbers are increasing due to the increase in garbage produced by humans. The function of the pink pouch that hangs from the front of the neck is unknown.
