FROM THE CHAIR Dear ASEV-ES members, Our Board of Directors has been very active and enthusiastic, which makes them a pleasure to work with. As such they have worked hard to put together this little communications, and I am thrilled to welcome you to our first newsletter in some time! We hope you enjoy reading it as much as we have enjoyed putting it together. So many changes have taken place during the course of the year with the ASEV-ES, and there’s more to come. ASEV-ES 2013 First of all, let me thank you for your attendance and participation at the 38th Annual ASEV-ES Conference and Symposium in Winston-Salem, NC! Once again, our program was chock-full of excellent research presentations and posters. For the first time, we listened to “Flash Talks” by poster presenters; these 5-minute research summaries gave all poster presenters a chance to share their research findings, to entice participants to wonder over to their posters for later viewing and questions. Since part of the mission of ASEV-ES is to promote education and research, these talks contributed to the overall program quite nicely. In our efforts to promote education, we also held scholarship fundraisers, including live and silent auctions at Wineries Unlimited and a 50/50 raffle at the Eastern Winery Exposition. We thank Rob Merletti with Vineyard and Winery Management for his support in allowing us to hold our annual auction at Wineries Unlimited, where we raised $14,532 for our student scholarship fund! We also thank Bob Mignarri and Richard Leahy for allowing us to raise funds via a 50/50 raffle at the Eastern Wineries Exposition in 2013. ASEV-ES 2014 As we head into a new year of fundraising, we plan to attempt new strategies to raise scholarship funds by increasing our presence across the country at trade shows. FROM THE CHAIR CONTINUED !only contribute to the scholarship fund, but that you will also help spread the word via email, newsletters, Facebook, Twitter, etc. As we saw in Winston-Salem, there are many phenomenally talented students who are deserving of scholarship funds, and I hope we can all help contribute to support them.!

Most importantly, we are very much looking forward to our 2014 annual meeting, which will be held jointly with ASEV in Austin, Texas (June 23-27, 2014)! While many of our usual events- don’t worry Oenolympics fans - will be held, we will be doing a few things differently. There have already been inquiries about the Call for Abstracts, and for now, plan to be ready to submit abstracts with the ASEV announcement.!

Finally, during our annual business meeting this year, attending ASEV-ES members voted to raise membership dues from $35 to $55, not only to work toward covering our annual expenses, but also to reflect the value of being an ASEV-ES m e m b e r - t h r o u g h p r o f e s s i o n a l development and in teract ion wi th colleagues, to name a couple. Thank you, ASEV-ES members, for your continued support of this exceptional society!!

Best wishes to all of you, and I look forward to seeing you in Austin next June!!!!!Jodi Creasap Gee!ASEV-ES Chair, 2013-2014!

ANDY RICE PASSES AWAY AT 88 Nearly one year ago, the wine industry lost a great pioneer - Dr. Andy Rice - who saw the Eastern wine industry develop from a largely Vitis labrusca-based industry to one which embraced hybrids and Vitis vinifera. He was born in Lewisburg, PA the son of Dr. John & Ruth Rice. Andy received B.S. & M.S. degrees in bacteriology from Bucknell University in PA and his Ph.D. in microbiology from Cornell University in Ithaca, NY in 1953. He lived in Penn Yan, NY during most of his life with Elaine, his bride of 65 years. They met while he was in the service during World War II at a USO dance in Wisconsin where she was the hostess. He received two [2] Purple Hearts. They had five [5] children and numerous grand & great-grand children.

Andy began his career with Seneca Foods in Dundee, NY but in 1962 joined the Taylor Wine Company, in Hammondsport, NY as Director of Research. In 1977 he was named Technical Director of Taylor Wines; in 1979 he became Director of Production with responsibility for all Taylor winemaking, and in 1980 became Vice-President / Director of Production until his retirement in January 1989.

Andy was well published, especially with respect to the chemistry of Eastern grapes/wines and microbiology, as primary author or co–author with Dr. Leonard Mattick, a wine chemist at C o r n e l l U n i v e r s i t y ’s A g r i c u l t u r a l Experiment Station in Geneva, NY.

Among Andy’s many accomplishments was his contribution towards the founding of the American Society for Enology and Viticulture (ASEV) Eastern Section (ES) in 1975. He also served as the first Chair of the ASEV/ES in 1975. In 1985 Andy received the ASEV/ES Outstanding

Achievement Award at the 10th Annual Meeting in Mississauga, ON, and special 375-mL bottles of 1984 Great Western Laursen Farm Riesling, with Andy’s name inscribed, were presented to all attendees (I still have two of these bottles as special keepsakes). Everyone was in on it and hid in the background until the award was given. Then the chi l led wine was distributed to all present including Andy to toast him! His comment was that he wondered “what else is going on at Taylor he does not know about as VP for all production, if this could be done without him knowing anything about i t…” Apparently they got it bottled while he was away from the winery on a trip. He received the 1989 Merit Award of the ASEV and the topic of his presentation was a most humorous “Gestation, Birth, and Development of the ASEV / Eastern Section”. Andy was one of the few “Easterners” to be so honored. He was also on the Editorial Board of the AJEV for many years. Among his other accolades was the 1992 American Wine Society [AWS] Award of Merit at the 25th Anniversary Conference of the AWS. He said it was one of the highest awards he had ever received.

He was associated with the wine industry for over 30 years and saw many ups and downs. He was most proud of isolating lact ic ac id bacter ia and s tar t ing inoculation of wine for controlled malo-lactic fermentation [MLF]. Nothing had been done on MLF in the East previously. He presided over and encouraged the shift in emphasis from older American varieties to French hybrid and vinifera grapes. This was a fundamental change by one of the oldest and largest wine producers in the Eastern USA. Other smaller producers soon followed. Quality of Eastern wines increased accordingly. Andy was also very proud of a work/study program for students and professors from Cornell University & other state schools to work at Taylor and receive credit.

Andy had a sense of humor about the Coca Cola purchase of Taylor Wine Company ca. 1981. At one of the Behrend College (Erie, PA) ASEV/ES annual meetings just after the purchase, he got a can of grape soda manufactured by Coca Cola from the vending machine, and immediately noticed it was light blue in color and not grape purple. Everyone had a good laugh over that (the color can be pH-dependent and obviously it was more acidic than normal for a grape soda). Andy joked that “if Coca Cola cannot even get the color right with their grape soda, how will they get it right with the wines of the big new winery they just bought?”

Andy was showing some of the Coca Cola executives around their newly acquired Taylor Winery and they commented on all the “inventory” that was stored. Andy had to remind them that wine is not made “on demand” like soda, but depends on the grape harvest that can be a good or bad year. So you had a lot of inventory in case there was a bad year for grapes so you would still have wine to sell. On another occasion Andy remarked that the controversial Dr. Konstantin Frank of the Finger Lakes, who was so successful in growing Vitis vinifera grapes in that region for so long, said that “Taylor is the Coca Cola of the wine industry.“ Eventually it came to pass, at least in name.

Taylor had its own air field and twin engine plane so it was easier to get in and out at such a remote area in the Finger Lakes in NY. Andy was leaving on a plane just as a plane of Taylor executives was landing. So, he thought he must be out of the loop for their meeting since he was VP for all Taylor wine production and he wondered why he had missed their meeting. Andy was famous for his informal “hoagie” lunches if you were visiting around lunch time. He was very insistent that you attend. That was how Andy got to know you better and you to know him better, greatly facilitating working together on many wine projects.

Andy was what he was -- a very kind, low keyed, patient, understanding, sensitive, modest individual, despite being someone of such great importance, status, responsibility, in a large company. There are few left like him anymore. As a 22-year-old graduate student in 1978 I met Andy Rice for the first time at my first ASEV/ES meetings in Behrend College. I still remember that occasion because he was so welcoming and so friendly. He was a special example to young students of what a scientist and a professional should be—serious and hard-working but at the same time friendly, gregarious, and one who enjoyed good wine, good food, and good conversation. It was an honor for me to call him a friend and a colleague.

Andy retired in January 1989. In retirement, Andy was a Certified First Responder & active participant in the local volunteer ambulance corps. He received the Silver Beaver Award for his distinguished service to the Boy Scouts of America. Family and faith were always a big part of Andy’s life. He was very active in the local Methodist Church and even served as a trustee. He was well loved and respected in his community, always ready to help others and was known for his wonderful laugh, kind words, and positive outlook. We are all richer for having known Andy.

He died peacefully with his loving family by his side at 88 on Wednesday 16 January 2013. He will be greatly missed.

The ASEV/ES owes gratitude to Dr. Frank Gadek & Jack Lucia (formerly Taylor Wine Co.) for their assistance in writing this tribute.
