GENERAL MEETING NOTES January 11, 2014

(These notes are provided as an overview of the business conducted during the general meeting. Please read the official minutes for details.) President Linda Sanchez called the meeting to order. The November 9, 2013 Meeting Minutes were accepted as read. PRESIDENT'S REPORT (Linda Sanchez) The club was well represented at the Desert Empire Terrier Club and Kennel Club of Palm Springs shows. The numbers certainly helped in making the Scottie showing at the K.C. Palm Springs Meet the Breeds on Saturday, 4 January 2014 very successful. For future Meet the Breeds, club members have offered to take a more active part in the organization and set-up with host clubs to encourage timely table set ups and announcements/directions. CORRESPONDING SECRETARY'S REPORT (J. Forkel for C. Scheaffer) Received AKC approval for the Spring puppy match. TREASURER'S REPORT (Pat Bolen) A report covering the period November 11, 2013 to January 10, 2014 was filed. Requested reimbursements were approved. BREEDERS REFERRAL () In her report, Lisa Kincheloe voiced the concern that she generally only had the one contact with the caller looking for a puppy (and not afterwards), and wondered if she should keep a running list of people who call her. Consensus was that a log of callers, should be kept. BULLETIN () The cost is well within the budget. EDUCATION () There is still room for participants with dogs for the Grooming Seminar, February 15 & 16, 2014. Paul LaFontaine will arrange for the audio equipment. A seminar next year on the structure, movement and breeding of the Scottish Terriers, and other Terrier breeds was discussed. HOLIDAY PARTY () The S.T.C.C.’s Holiday Party at the Miyamura's was wonderful and everyone had a good time. There were a lot of wonderful items available for sale at The Bazaar. Hilda made crate pads for everyone who came, wonderful, wonderful gifts! Thanks Ted & Hilda!!!

LEGISLATION (Jerry Ford) The AKC is hosting a Legislative Conference on January 25-26, 2014 in Raleigh, NC, and AKC Legislative Liaisons, AKC Delegates, and AKC-affiliated federation representatives are invited to attend. On December 10, the Ventura County Board of Supervisors passed an ordinance that would establish mandatory spay/neuter of dogs and cats in the county unless the owner qualifies for an exemption. On December 16, a lawsuit was filed in the Federal District Court in Washington DC that asks the Court to declare that the Retail Pet Store Rule is “arbitrary, capricious and inconsistent" with law, and to remand the Rule back to the USDA. The "Complaint" in the Lawsuit was filed on behalf of 42 Plaintiffs that consisted of Dog and Cat Clubs, Associations and a Registry. Those 42 Plaintiffs included nearly 19,000 breeders who potentially would be adversely affected by the Rule. NOMINATING () The nominating committee has presented the slate of officers and directors for the 2014-2015 election: President-Linda Sanchez; Vice-President-Jacki Forkel; Treasurer-Pat Bolen; Corresponding Secreary-Cheryl Schaeffer; Recording Secretary-Ted Miyamura; Director 2014-2016-Vicky Taylor; and Director 2014-2016 Paul LaFontaine. Nominations will be taken from the floor at the March general meeting . The election will occur at the May general meeting. PUPPY MATCH () Hilda Miyamura is match chair. Volunteers have already signed up for many of the jobs/responsibilities. There are still openings; the raffle at the Match, and a few other jobs. If you can lend a hand, please contact Hilda at 818-887-9585. WAYS & MEANS – (Sherry Swickard) Sherry said that they made $1,214.75 at the Christmas Party/cleared $958.75. Tables were requested at the upcoming Seminar for Ways & Mean items. WEB SITE () The club approved the annual renewal with the web site provider. SPECIALTY REPORT – (Linda Sanchez) AKC approved show. Judges’ paperwork

approved. Cheryl Schaeffer is working on an information packet for the Judge from England, Stuart Plane. Specialty Committee: Advertising Paul LaFontaine Take Lunch Tickets at show Needs to be filled Morning Donuts/Coffee Vicky Taylor Dinner/Lunch Arrangements Adrian Sanchez Dinner/Lunch RSVPs Rod Ott Raffle Hilda & Ted Miyamura Specialty Logo Cheryl Schaeffer Trophies Jacki Forkel w/ Cheryl Schaeffer Equipment Lenders For “Out of Towners” Needs to be filled Welcome Bags Needs to be filled Need to put together Judges’ gift and welcome packages. This seminar is sponsored by the Antelope Valley Kennel Club. $30 per person, $40 per couple, lunch included. Contact: Vicky Taylor – (661) 269-1033 NEW BUSINESS Paul LaFontaine will send a ½ page advertisement to the Bagpiper by the end of January. The STCA gives each regional club a ½ page advertisement for Specialties at no charge. REGULAR MEETING DATE The club voted to change the date of the March General Meeting to March 1, 2014. PET EXPO will be April 25-27, 2014 with April 24 for setting up. We NEED Breeders and pet people to bring their dogs and come and talk to the public. Parking permits will be provided only to those people who come for all three days. CLUB AWARD OF MERIT - nominations must be received by the Corresponding Secretary prior to the March meeting--most likely by February 24. Meeting was adjourned.

benefit beginners up to and including advanced groomer/exhibitors. This is an opportunity you do not want to miss out on, so act now and book your space before the February 3rd deadline. Sunday, March 23rd will be our STCC Spring Puppy Match. Hilda Miyamura, Match Chair has done a remarkable job of preparing for this match. A match flyer is in this issue of the newsletter. Soon you will be getting details pertinent to our 81st Specialty Show in June. Jacki and Cheryl will again be taking Trophy Donations and Paul LaFontaine will be s e t t i n g u p C a t a l o g Advertising. This year’s Specialty Show is Dedicated In Memory of Mike Serrano (MistyMoors) and our theme will combine our Scots with a nautical flair to it - - “Ride The Waves to the Queen Mary”. If you can help out in any capacity, please step forward and let Show Chairs: Linda Sanchez or Jacki Forkel know you are willing and able. The Corresponding Secretary has sent out the Report of Nominating Committee. Names published are nominees for Club Year 2014-2015 (Officers & Directors, 2014-2016). STCC By-Laws allow for nominations to be taken from the floor at our March General Meeting with elections at our Annual Meeting in May. Due to the fact that the CALScots convention in March conflicted with our scheduled March meeting date, our meeting was changed to accommodate those wishing to attend the event. Our next STCC General Meeting will be Saturday, March 1st at the Old Spaghetti Factory in Duarte, CA at 12 noon. See you there! Linda

2013 ANNUAL AWARDS Club statistician, Sueannette Maniscalco, is putting the finishing touches on the annual awards for the 2013 year. For the majority of the awards, the information is readily collected from the STCA and AKC databases. She does ask the membership to let her know if their Stud dog is in the running as she does not know if they still own the dog.

NOMINATIONS FOR MEMBER

AWARD OF MERIT The STCC offers The Award of Merit for outstanding service to the STCC. Any member in good standing can nominate another member in good standing (other than a current officer or director) for their outstanding work for the STCC. Nominations for the award must be received by Cheryl Scheaffer, the Corresponding Secretary, by February 24, 2014. The board will vote on these nominations.

February 2014 Page 9 THE BULLETIN 2013/2014 No. 6

Our little Scottie boy, Patrick, spent Christmas with us, and then he was off to his new southern San Diego County home in time to greet the new year. He'd lived with his family for almost seven years. They'd purchased him and a Siberian Husky at the same time at a pet store. But Patrick's family, which included young children, lost their home to foreclosure last year and had been living in a second floor apartment with their menagerie of five animals for several months when their landlord busted them. It was a "no pets" apartment. In response to an e-mail from Patrick’s dad, we called and said we could take him into our rescue and adoption program ...and we picked him up several days later We took him to a dermatologist for a workup and allergy testing and found out that his strongest allergies are to several types of dust mites and several types of mold. T h r e e families who called us to adopt, turned him down due to his need for l i f e l o n g m e d i c a t i o n , basically all saying that they "just don't want to deal with skin issues and will wait for a different Scottie." Then a wonderful senior lady called tearfully telling us her nine year old Scottie had just died and she'd had Scotties for forty years and "do you have any available right now?" She passed a a home visit to check fencing with flying colors and Patrick was hers. We provided three months worth of his prescribed medication, and a special shampoo to get her off to a good start. "I've named him Max and he has already learned it. He is so different from my last Scottie and so very affectionate. I'm glad because I knew I would be comparing them in my mind, but that hasn't happened." My friends gave me a little shower, not that I needed anything. I think they just wanted to meet him right away," she happily commented. A few days before Christmas an Inland Empire woman called and said she had a pair of Scotties that her family could no longer keep due to the loss of their

house and both she and her husband had lost their jobs. "We are moving in with my brother and his family in San Antonio in a few weeks and he already has two dogs," she said. Duke is a stunning black and silver four year old Scottie and Sophie is a three year old wheaten. In 28 years of rescue I've never had a Scottie with a coat anything like Duke's. They were not spayed or neutered. The woman said "I got them to breed. They've had two litters so far.," When I asked about their vaccine status, she said "they probably need everything right now. I gave my own vaccines." She said they were purebred but she had no papers on them, either. They had been "outside dogs," she admitted. We picked them up right after Christmas and they were very matted and filthy. She said, "I can't afford to groom them." Duke is a happy, happy boy at 28 pounds and Sophie is on the shy side and weighs 22 pounds. They are now "lap broken." About a week after their spay/neuter surgeries, I started them on my lap-sitting program, as I do with every rescued Scottie. They both resisted at first but quickly adapted to it and now can hardly wait for their turns, which are always in the evening as I watch TV. They each get 45 minutes to an hour, separately, and then they are crated in our family room for the night. They are our third pair in the past year and pairs usually always take longer to adopt, but they are very bonded and we don't split pairs up, even though many people ask us to. They are awaiting their forever home, here. Several days ago we got a call about a little Scottie girl needing a new home. Six year old Zoey's "dad" had died in October and "she just isn't her normal happy self at our house," the man's daughter said.

SCOTTIE RESCUE Zoey had lived six months of the year in Idaho, where her owner's home was then spent the other six months here in Chino Hills staying with the daughter and her family. "When he was in Idaho we had a neighbor who checked on him twice a day since he had heart issues," the daughter said. "One October morning the neighbor saw him riding his tractor on his two acre property and when the neighbor went in the late afternoon to check on him, he'd died ...apparently while shaving. The water was still running in the sink and little Zoey was sitting at his side," the d a u g h t e r tearfully told me. "She w a s s o devoted to my dad." "My family is too busy to give her this kind of attention. Do you ever get retired people who want to adopt a Scottie?" I told her that we frequently adopt to retirees and we would be happy to take her into our rescue program. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Special THANK YOU'S this month to: Sandra Brzeginiiski: Rich Chambers and Bonnie McGregor: Ron Collieer and Ron Kline: Trudy and Bill Durrette: Keren Elgin; Frank and Linda Ford: Dennis and Andrea Hartmann: Brenda Johnson: Paul LaFontaine; Susan Korsinen: Henry and Rita Nebeker; Talmade and Debra Reed: Lindsay Roy; Sherry and Joseph Swickard: Max and Barbara Whitson: and Katherine Yost.
