GLIADIN1997 - 2011
It is with sadness that I must report that Gliadin crossed Rainbow Bridge onMarch 3, 2011. Glia seemed to have had a stroke or a brain lesion. She did nothave good cognitive function and was not maintaining her weight. They triedmedication in hope of improvement, but she still became weaker. They had hereuthanized on March 3rd. Gliadin had no other obvious health problems otherthan her kidney disease, which scientifically made her very important to theirresearch. At this time there is a lot of data being collected. They can’t give usmuch information yet about what has been determined from their researchbecause they are not at an end point yet, since this is a longitudinal study.
When I received the news, I began crying as I am sure many of you felt thesame way (she was part of us - almost like she was one of our own). Glia willalways be remembered!
A deep appreciation and thank you to all of you who contributed to help supportour girl. NCSU College of Veterinary Medicine and Dr. Vaden also wish toexpress their thank you for our many years of support.
Sleep well our Glia

SOFT COATED WHEATEN TERRIERHEALTH PROJECTS
Wheaten health is important to all of us, so with the start of a new year Ithought a description of “health projects” would be beneficial to all. During thecoming year and years to follow, our club will be asking for donations to supportthese projects as well as doing raffles, etc. I feel this is a start to keep everyoneinformed on what is being done to help find answers so breeders can breed withmore knowledge and owners can have help with treatment.
Donations can be made throughout the year. Checks should be made outto the individual projects; however, they should be mailed to Carol Shaltz for recordkeeping for our club. Checks will be forwarded to appropriate foundations.
SCWTCA Endowment FundThe SCWTCA, Inc. has set up a specialized fund strictly for the purpose of
supporting projects devoted to Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier health. The purpose ofthis fund is to give the Wheaten community more options for making donations thatwill advance projects devoted to Wheaten health. The funds will be used for healthrelated issues of the SCWT. They will be used to fund grants selected by theSCWTC Endowment Fund Board or provide matching funds for grants approved bythe American Kennel Club – Canine Health Foundation.

AKC Canine Health FoundationSoft Coated Wheaten Terrier Genetic Research Fund. These donations are
restricted to the Soft Coated Wheaten Genetic Research Donor Advised Fund tobegin the search for the hereditary links to PLE/PLN.Checks Made Out To: SCWTC Genetic Research Project (TAX DEDUCTIBLE)Mail to Carol Shaltz
It is my sincere hope that our Club will continue to help fund these projectsso we can have healthier Wheatens.

HEALTH SCREENING
With Spring fast approaching everyone should be thinkingabout health screening their Wheaten. A good time to have this doneis when you are making an appointment with your veterinarian to testyour dog for heartworm.
Your veterinarian can check for signs of PLE, PLN, RD, andAddison’s Disease with blood and urine tests. Your veterinarianshould run the following tests:
• Biochemical profile, including:Total proteinAlbuminCreatineBUNCholesterolSodiumPotassiumPhosphorus
• Complete Blood Count• Routine Urinalysis, including:
