This has been a time of reflection for the Jackson Foundation. We’ve lost two important leaders this year: our founding Chairwoman, Helen H. Jackson, and our long-time President of the Board, Bill Van Ness. Helen and Bill helped create this Foundation and stood behind all of its many accomplishments. Helen, speaking up for concerns she shared with Scoop—human rights in particular, but also support for the Jackson School—brought her smarts, wit, human connection and appreciation of her colleagues to bear on everything that she touched. Bill, bringing his quick legal mind and comprehensive understanding of Jackson to the establishment of the Foundation, helped assemble an able Board and staff to shepherd the Jackson legacy. We are proud of our association with each of them.

You will see that we are engaged in Washington, DC and in Washington State on matters that are firmly within those Jackson values: human rights, civic engagement, climate advocacy, and concern about the U.S.—Russia—China relationship. And our Jackson Leadership Fellows provide an avenue to help us connect with new audiences, both locally and nationally.

We hope you enjoy this Annual Report issue of our Newsletter.

Lara Iglitzin Executive Director

The Foundation and Human Rights First partnered on a public conference in Washington, D.C. on Fake News, Free Speech, and Foreign Influence: The Smart Way the United States Can Combat Disinformation. The latest in a series of expert-led discussions on Russian influence in Europe and potential tech-driven solutions, the event brought together leading thinkers on disinformation, the media, free speech, and technology. The speakers assessed the current situation and shared ideas on the emerging responses and responsibilities of governments, the technology industry, and civil society. Board President John Hempelmann welcomed the group and spoke about Senator Jackson and the Foundation’s role in addressing human rights and Russia.

The National Bureau of Asian Research (NBR) and the Foundation held a program on Russia–China Relations: What it Means for U.S. Strategy. NBR geared the Capitol Hill briefing toward a Congressional audience and the room was packed with young staffers. The experts on China and Russia provided policy recommendations for future U.S. engagement with these nations. Foundation staff set the stage by referencing the Jackson focus on Sino–Soviet relations.

Jackson Fellows engage with climate change

New Foundation partner Seattle-based Amplifier held a reception to launch its #MyClimateHero project—an art exhibition depicting modern heroes of the climate movement. The event drew a lively audience for panels that featured several Jackson Leadership Fellows including Amarpreet

Sethi, Alex Adams, Matthew Combe, and Brandon Hersey. Amplifier’s Chief of Staff and Jackson Leadership Fellow Tamara Power-Drutis produced the evening. Lara Iglitzin opened the program by underlining the Foundation’s interest in engaging young people in climate issues.

Annual Report 2017 – New and Ongoing Grants

The Henry M Jackson Foundation was founded in 1983 to continue the unfinished work of the late Senator Henry M. “Scoop” Jackson in the areas in which he played a key leadership role: international affairs education, human rights, environment and natural resources management, and public service. Through its grantmaking and strategic initiatives, the Foundation seeks to make a lasting impact and perpetuate the Jackson legacy for the benefit of future generations. Strategic initiatives address critical and timely needs, and leverage additional resources for issues that are central to the Jackson legacy by:

• partnering with other organizations;• convening leaders in the field from nonprofit, foundation, and government sectors;• providing opportunities for public dialogue; and• organizing forums for in-depth analysis on critical and timely issues.

Participation in strategic initiatives is primarily conducted on an invitation-only basis; however, interested individuals may contact Foundation Program Officer Maura Sullivan to discuss potential partnership ideas that are consistent with Foundation interests and priorities.

In fiscal year 2016-17, the Foundation committed $254,000 for new grants and strategic initiatives and paid $126,150 in prior year commitments.

Jackson Leadership Fellows and alumni visited the Washington State Capitol in Olympia for a productive and inspiring day. Representative Gael Tarleton introduced them to the Democratic Caucus where they received a warm welcome and spoke about their leadership projects. The group also met with 2017 Jackson Fellow and Washington State Senator Hans Zeiger (R-25) who talked about the importance of civic engagement and bipartisanship in the legislature. Finally, Washington State Public Lands Commissioner Hilary Franz advised the Fellows regarding the value of running for office. Given the trip’s success, this will become an annual Fellows’ program event.
