shooting of a black man by an angry young white man at a restaurant I frequent. A Wal-Mart becomes target practice for a hate-filled man trying to prove that race matters. A bar becomes a shooting alley for a disturbed young man. All this week I have felt angry, powerless and scared. I can live paralyzed in fear or stand up and do what I can. I choose the latter and I hope you will join me.

I feel a deep sadness as I am sure you do at the ongoing hate and dysfunction of our culture. My kids, your kids, our kids go to school, work and even out for fun with fears we never dreamt of. The very great sadness we have all felt has not yet—even after several years of examples—been strong enough to evoke the actions that could prevent the continued horror.

I always wonder what Jesus was writing in the dirt. Maybe he wrote, “God help us all.” Or maybe he wondered, “Will they ever get it.” Who knows, maybe he wrote, “Help them to love enough to care.”

You can make a difference. You can change hate to hope! The time is now....

We can all do something, how about starting with this that a dear friend posted this week:

“Call your Senator, Congressman, Mayor, City Council Person and Minister today. Tell each of then you want to help. Tell them you want to be part of the movement to end violence in our world.”

Christian Education body, mind, and soul. The disruption of a transition, especially unexpected, can set us off of our axis for weeks, and it seems that we can’t catch our breath or gain our footing back. Transitions may also seem that we are alone and that no one else understands what is happening within us. Or that we don’t want to burden anyone else with our fear or uncertainty. And yet, I am reminded of someone who was faced with an unexpected transition that turned her world upside down. Who felt fear and uncertainty. Who was just “Mary” one day, and the next day became “Mary, the Mother of Jesus.” Now, there are many things about Mary’s life and culture that cannot be applied, but one thing that provides me comfort is the fact that she knows what it’s like to experience transition. The she has experienced a similar thing that I am experiencing right now. No, I’m not expecting the Messiah. But I am scared and uncertain in this new transition. And for some strange reason, when she says, “My soul magnifies the Lord” in her Magnificat found in Luke, I can’t help but want to join her in this song of praise. This song of transition. She

Hello, Ardmore! I am so excited to begin working and meeting all of you. I have scheduled meetings with a few of you but am looking forward to the continuous flow of introductions and the building of relationships in this community. Because I have had about 18 years of school under my belt, I am ready to begin the practical and intentional work of ministry at Ardmore UMC. One thing that has been on my mind during the past few months has been the reality of transitions. The time in between something old and something new. Something familiar and something unknown. I think this is a big part of our church today and is something that pretty much every human being has in common. People transition from elementary school to middle school, middle school to high school, high school to college, the workforce, or the military. From watching a child’s first steps, to watching them take their first steps into adulthood. From the birth of a newborn to the death of a loved one. These transitions can be some of the hardest things we go through as human beings because they affect every part of our being. Our

enters into this time of transition in a way that doesn’t overshadow her fears or uncertainties, because we know that going into something scared is just as brave as going into something fearless. Instead, she holds this moment close to her heart in the hopes that she will be reminded of this moment when things get hard. When she doesn’t want to go on. When she wishes for her old life back. When she just wants to quit. She has started the song of transition, and I invite you to join with Mary and me in this song. It’s not an easy song, but a song nonetheless that unites the community of God. While we may be going through transitions at different speeds, I have comfort in knowing that there are people surrounding me that know the fears, uncertainties, excitement, and hope that come with transitions. I hope you will join me in the weeks to come as we make this transition together as one community.

Peace,

Meredith

We are all in this together!

My wife, Lauren, has recently started a new job as a school nurse. Over the past weeks she has started training with other school nurses preparing for the school year to begin. One thing she has been amazed at is the amount of work and care that goes on behind the scenes to make a school function. This is something we all assume, of course our teachers and administrators care about their school. It is another thing to see this first-hand. It takes a community of folks to educate and care for our kids. Teachers, staff, administrators, parents, mentors, peers; we are all in this together. This takes special trainings, folks specialized in areas they are passionate about, people putting in the time and presence to accomplish the goal, and a community of people working together as a team towards this common goal.

I find this is true for one of our roles at Ardmore UMC. We get to be a part of what God is doing in our neighborhood, in our city, and in the world. We work together towards our common goal; to share the love and grace of Jesus. It takes a

village, it takes a community. May we continue to share the love of Jesus with everyone in our lives and in our city. May we be faithful in wherever God calls us to. May we work together, partnering with what God is already doing. I am thankful for this village at Ardmore UMC and for the boldness to make a difference together.

As our two daughters prepare for their first days of school (2nd grade and kindergarten), I am hopeful and excited for their year ahead. I am prayerful and thankful for their teachers that are preparing for their investment in their students. On the last day of the school year, a teacher in the carline was wearing a t-shirt that said, “Tag, you’re it!” I am looking forward to the beginning of school… maybe to say, “Tag, you’re it” or maybe to see what God has in store for this coming year. To all of our teachers, staff, and administrators that serve in education, THANK YOU! Blessings on your year ahead. I am thankful that we are all in this together.

"Come, labor on. Who dare stand idle on the harvest plain, while all around us waves the golden grain? And to each servant does the Master say, "Go work today."

It is the time in the year where the feeling of "Back to School" is all too tangible. There are innumerable "Back to School" Sales, big yellow School buses are making reappearances on the roads, and yes, it is still way too hot! For me, I am experiencing an interesting phenomenon because this year, I will not be going "Back to School". This is strange because for over 20 years, I have been enrolled in one academic program or another. However, this will allow me to further focus on our exciting program year at Ardmore United Methodist Church.

One of my favorite hymns for this season is "Come, Labor On." It is a hymn written by Jane Laurie Borthwick, a 19th century Scottish poet, and the tune is by Thomas Tertius Noble, a famed British Organist and Choirmaster who immigrated to the United States to start the world renowned St. Thomas Choir School of St. Thomas Episcopal Church 5th Avenue, New York. The hymn centers around the concept of work, making this hymn especially appropriate for the beginning of school terms and Labor Day.

There is an overall theme of harvest presented in this hymn. Around this time period, many families made a living on the farm working sunup to sundown. Likewise, our Christian lives can be viewed through this harvest metaphor, where we are doing God's work from sunup to sundown loving Jesus, loving our neighbors, and spreading the Gospel. Or as one of my friends would put it, "Get off

your keister, spread the Gospel, and give ol' Satan what for 'cause there’s no time for Christians to waste when the devil is making mischief and the world is going to hell in a hand basket."

The tune for this hymn is ORA LABORA, a play on the Rule of St. Benedict, meaning "Pray and Work." This seems to be timely for not only the start of school, but also for the program year at Ardmore United Methodist Church. As our adult choir, children's choirs, and our handbell choir all start back up for the year, we are reminded about the commitment, dedication, and plain old labor that is associated with joining these ensembles. Yes, it is work, but the reward is great! I encourage anyone and everyone to join one of our musical ensembles, if even for just a trial period. Yes, as the Gospel declares, "the harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few." Will you consider joining us on this venture?

Our liturgical life is another example of ORA LABORA. Liturgy literally means "Work of the People" and anyone who attends our liturgical worship service knows that our liturgy involves both work and people! Think about all the people who are involved in the service: the clergy, ushers, choirs, musicians, readers, and acolytes, to name just a few. Then think of all the work that is involved: standing, sitting, praying, listening, reading, singing, and so on. Our worship requires work! I believe that all these small actions not only form us as worshipers, but it also transforms the world around us. We are sent forth to be God's hands and feet to do justly, love mercy, and humbly walk with God. Our liturgy acts as catalyst to feed us with the body and blood of Christ, so we may become Christ to everyone we encounter.

As the season of summer is starting to set and school terms and program years are about to begin, let us be reminded on our call to work- in all that we do. Ardmore United Methodist Church has many ministries, including a full music program, that requires laborers. I invite you to join these worthwhile groups, be fed by their ministries, and then you, in turn, may feed the rest of creation. Being Christ's servants, we are called to the noble task of work. Come, labor on!

Ardmore United Methodist Church's Vacation Bible School had a successful journey "To Mars and Beyond." Over the week of August 5-8 and 11, Voyagers explored God's universal and limitless love and went beyond with Faith, Boldness, Kindness, Thankfulness, and Hope! It was exciting to watch children learn and grow in their faith journey as they formed special relationships with their peers and adult volunteers. Bible stories, science projects, crafts, music and time on the playground offered a well-balanced curriculum and a fun-filled event for all!

The children participated in a Community Mission project for City With Dwellings, collecting baseball hats, rain ponchos,

sunglasses, and bottles of sunscreen for our homeless neighbors in Winston Salem. Our Voyagers ended their Mission on Sunday morning, August 11, when they sang one of their songs in both worship services and then proceeded to Kids’ Own Worship where they learned the last "Power Launcher" of VBS. Following worship, church members and visitors joined together in fellowship and in celebration of VBS with a delicious cook-out with hamburgers and hot dogs provided by the United Methodist Men, tasty salads prepared by the United Methodist Women and, of course, no meal is complete without those yummy desserts our congregation makes!

This intergalactic mission would

not have been possible without the countless volunteers: planning committee, decorations team, station leaders, crew leaders, prayer warriors, and so many others -- this congregation became the hands and feet of Jesus in their work and actions.

Board of Trustees College Care Ministry Church Mouse is now College Care Ministry! Thank you to our awesome Church Mouses who have sent care packages to students in the past. We are continuing this ministry into the new school year with a new name and inviting new folks onto the team! Why should we have a College Care Ministry? Transitions and new seasons can be difficult. We want to help care for our college-age students during this important time in their lives. Would someone in your family like to be included in our College Care Ministry? A team from Ardmore will send them notes and a care package throughout the year to encourage and connect with them. Our youth will be helping on this team to send out letters/packages to their friends in college. To include YOUR college student, please send their name, school attending, year in school, school mailing address and email address. Is your student living at home and attending a local school? We would like to include them, too! Please send us their info to be included. Team Member Invitation! Do you want to help be on the team to send these care packages to our college students? We would love for you to use your gifts to bless our college students! RSVP to [email protected] and [email protected] for more details.

A Study of Acts Please join us for a 7 week study of Acts. Although the book of Acts is often called "The Acts of the Apostles", it could just as easily be called the "The Acts of the Holy Spirit". How did you like the “Dog Days of Summer?” I think I know the answer. I just hope they are over and that cool weather will be here soon, maybe before Autumn begins. Don’t you love raising the windows and feeling the cool breezes? I do. Hot weather may slow us down a bit, but it doesn’t keep us from doing the things that we want and need to do.

It’s time for Young at Heart to resume. I’m working on programs for the year. Our September luncheon/program will be Tuesday, September 24, 2019 at 11:45 a.m. in Bob Martin Hall. Our speaker will be Eileen Ayuso from the Shalom Project. As you may recall, the Big Chill is a fundraiser for the Shalom Project and our “cool” pastors, Matt and Joe, sat on ice to raise funds for them. The Shalom Project serves the community and neighbors in need through their medical clinic and pharmacy, food pantry, clothing closet and “Welcome Table” programs. Mrs. Ayuso will share more information when she speaks this month. Cagney’s will cater the meal and the cost is $ 8.00/person. Put the date on your calendar now, September 24, and make your reservations by Friday, September 20. We will have good food, good fun and good fellowship…come and invite a friend. It will be good to get together again.

You may have seen some flyers around the church about a trip with Ardmore Baptist Church’s Ardmore Journeys. They are going to Wytheville, VA to “meet U.S. President Woodrow Wilson and First Lady, Edith Bolling Wilson” Monday, September 30, 2019. It looks

like an interesting trip…I have signed up to go. They have enjoyable trips throughout the year and they have invited Ardmore UMC to join them. Let me know if you are interested in going on this trip and I will give you more information. You need to sign up by September 13. I will also keep you posted on other trips they have planned.

Ardmore UMC’s second annual Block Party is Sunday, September 8, 2019, 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Come out and join the fun…there will be activities for children and food trucks. Bring your grandchildren…they will have fun.

Remember our homebound members…visit, call or send cards. They appreciate being remembered. If you need a ride to an appointment, call me. That’s part of my work for Ardmore Seniors.

As we await Autumn and all the activities that take place in this season, think about this quote: “Joy is a light that fills you with hope and faith and love.” (Adela Rogers St. John) May you find joy in all that you do and share that joy with others.

Love and Peace to All,

Mary Jo 336.723.5566 or [email protected]

Greetings from the Ardmore United Methodist Women!

After a busy, busy summer here at Ardmore (UMW Sunday, the Yard Sale, hosting the annual meeting of the Yadkin Valley District of UMW, and many of us participating in VBS) it is time to wind down at Lake Junaluska at the Western NC Conference annual Celebration (September 13-15.) Think about joining us...you deserve it! Actually I should probably call this event a "winding UP," since our circles resume regular meetings in September. Welcome back, all!

Looking ahead to October 12, we are putting together a volunteer opportunity trip to the Conference Mission Response Center (the MRC) near Mooresville, NC. We will get to see the facility where many of our Hands On donations are processed for distribution and lend them a hand, ourselves.

In November, there will be a general meeting of the Ardmore UMW unit in conjunction with the 2019
