NEWSBREAK / SUMMER 20182
One of the many things that makes our community hospital so unique is the role our providers
play in the lives of our patients and in creating the collaborative culture of our hospital and
community. We are so fortunate to be a part of a tight-knit community where world-class
doctors – who could live and work anywhere – choose to call home. Several members of our
medical staff share their time and expertise by serving on local public health boards, playing
in the Annual Fore Your Health Golf Tournament, or participating in Yankee Homecoming
events – like Chief Medical Officer Dr. Gail Fayre and Dr. William Jackson (see pgs. 6-7).
Anna Jaques has several longtime physicians who have cared for generations of families over
the years. We also continue to welcome new physicians who are attracted to the high quality,
community-based setting Anna Jaques offers. The more we are able to attract and retain
excellent providers, the more care we can keep in our community.
I love hearing from grateful patients, whether through a handwritten thank you note, or when
a friend shares a story about how their parent received top-notch care, or when I bump into
someone in town who is so appreciative of their experience at our hospital. In every issue we
share kudos from patients which you will see on pg. 12.
To our providers - on behalf of the hospital and the many patients you care for every day - thank you for choosing
Anna Jaques and this community as your home. I look forward to seeing many providers at the upcoming Annual Medical
Staff Meeting on September 25th at the Blue Ocean Event Center and extending my gratitude in person.
On August 17th, Beth Israel Lahey Health (BILH) filed its response to the Health Policy Commission’s (HPC) preliminary
report on their Cost and Market Impact Review (CMIR) of our proposed combined system. BILH’s response provided:
Additional information about how BILH would operate as a system to strengthen patient care, expand access and
help control rising health care costs;
Included specific recommendations from some of the integration design teams;
Expressed that the HPC’s preliminary report did not adequately consider current conditions of the health care market
in MA and that concerns raised about the possibility of increased costs do not reflect the unique regulatory constraints
and market dynamic of MA;
The HPC plans to meet on September 27th to discuss the proposed system further and vote on a final report.
In April, the Deptartment of Public Health voted unanimously to approve our proposed affiliation.
The HPC presented preliminary recommendations on July 18th; BILH submitted its response on August 17th.
Working with the Attorney General’s Office, and expect a decision following HPC’s final report.
Continue to share requested data with FTC. Anticipate a decision late 2018.

As we continue to move forward with the creation of Beth Israel Lahey Health, the
future CEO of the system, Kevin Tabb, MD, will become increasingly visible both
within and outside of our organization. Get to know Dr. Kevin Tabb with a short
video available for viewing on the AnnaOnline homepage.
QCan the Institution for Savings Inpatient Unit get a new ice machine and water dispenser? We have many orthopedic patients that need ice on their incisions and our machine is constantly breaking down. Also, patients are requesting water and we have to give them tap water. Getting water bottles from the Kitchen takes time.
After experiencing an unfortunate series of unrelated problems, the ice machine is now fully functioning. Thank you for advocating for your patients and we apologize for the inconvenience this caused on the unit.A
Q Many staff agree that the plastic “chucks” used for incontinent pa-tients are not up to par. They do not absorb much, resulting in more complete bed changes needed and skin issues for patients. The chucks we used in the past were much better. Can we change back to the old ones or find a new alternative?
Unfortunately, the chucks that we originally used are no longer manufactured. Purchasing is working with Nurse Managers to identify a new product. A

In July 2013, the Gerrish Breast Care Center (GBCC) opened
its doors in Newburyport to provide comprehensive breast
care services to the community. Over the past five years,
the GBCC – led by Dr. Peter Hartmann, Medical Director
– has introduced new technology, earned prestigious
accreditations, and continues to improve the quality
and breadth of services available for its patients and the
community. Highlights include:
The GBCC is now a Certified Breast Center as
recognized by the National Accreditation Program for
Breast Centers, a program administered by the American
College of Surgeons – one of 18 Certified Breast Centers in
Massachusetts.
The GBCC opened a satellite office in our
Haverhill Medical Offices building to better serve patients in
the greater Haverhill area. An article featuring a GBCC patient
who has benefited from the new location in Haverhill will be
featured in the fall issue of Merrimack Valley Magazine.
AJH introduced 3D Mammography, the latest
imaging technology available, to all three mammography
locations in Newburyport, Amesbury, and Haverhill to catch
more cancers, sooner.
Stay tuned for the many ways AJH and the GBCC raise
awareness and education during Breast Cancer Awareness
Month in October, both in the hospital and out in the
community.

My adventure of living a healthier life started with the first hospital Steps Challenge. I loved
the competition and positive feedback from the Fitbit (we average 1,000 steps an hour in
Pre-Op!). I went on to join the original Weight Watchers @ Work group in Spring 2017. I felt
a strong need to change some old unhealthy habits. Having Weight Watchers (WW) come
directly to Anna Jaques was a wonderful opportunity.
In the past year, I’ve lost 50 pounds and am striving to make my goal weight. Aspects of my
weight loss success include:
• Goals: Making daily decisions and setting weekly goals;
• Guidance: The guidance of our WW leader, Leslie, and the support of our group has been the most important
aspect of my weight loss.
• Support: The group setting of WW makes it fun to have cheerleaders, both in Surgical Services as well as
throughout the hospital.
My success has not been fast, but it’s worth it. The support of my Anna Jaques family
has been outstanding and I’m grateful for the wellness opportunities that Anna Jaques has offered me.

The annual student-powered fashion event,
Catwalk4Cancer, recently gifted more than $10,000 to
the Anna Jaques Cancer Center affiliated with Beth Israel
Deaconess Medical Center. In April, students from Central
Catholic High School, with support from TJX Companies,
brought together 300+ student and faculty volunteers, their
families and local businesses to combine a love for fashion
to impact the lives of those with cancer. Over the past ten
years, the runway benefit has raised a quarter of a million
dollars to fight cancer.
The Anna Jaques Community
Health Foundation held its
28th annual “Fore Your Health”
Golf Tournament on August
13th at Renaissance Golf Club
and raised over $128,000.
Proceeds of the tournament
support MAKO robotic arm
technology at the hospital.
Under the leadership of Byron Matthews, chairman of the
golf committee, the annual tournament has generated over
$2.5 million to support programs and services at Anna Jaques.
Thank you to Byron and the committee of volunteers for their
hard work and dedication to this event: Steve DeGuglielmo,
Rich Doolan, Luis Fernandez, Dr. Kevin Gasiorowski, Tom

Anna Jaques has been approved as an authorized independent Pediatric Advance Life Skills (PALS) training center. This
enables staff and physicians who need PALS education to receive both their initial and renewal classes at the hospital and in
a timely manner.
The goal of the PALS course is to improve the quality of care provided to seriously ill or injured children, resulting in improved
outcomes. This approval comes after over two years of dedicated work from the Nursing Education Department and PALS
instructors. Working together as a team, they were able to demonstrate the need for and benefits of becoming a PALS training
center for the hospital, as well as community members to the American Heart Association.
The Birth Center hosted its Annual Mother & Baby Picnic
on August 14th that welcomed mothers, babies, and
families who met during prenatal and breastfeeding classes
and support groups to reconnect in celebration of National
Breastfeeding Month. The Birth Center takes great pride in
supporting mothers and families with breastfeeding – both
during their stay on the unit and continued after they go
home through Mother & Baby Support Groups.
In 2014, the Birth Center started its journey towards becoming
an official “Baby Friendly” hospital. Baby Friendly is a global
effort launched by the World Health Organization and
UNICEF to implement practices that protect, promote
and support breastfeeding philosophies. On September
6th and 7th, surveyors will tour the hospital for final
Baby Friendly accreditation.
