A proposed domainal
reclassification for
Saskatchewan’s Hearne
and Rae Provinces Colin Card
Saskatchewan Geological Survey
Saskatchewan Domains • First Lithostructural
Domains (Lewry and
Sibbald, 1977)
• Domains are the building
blocks of geologic provinces
• a geographic entity, which is
distinguished by a distinct
lithological and/or structural
character
• As we get more data we
have to adapt
• Rocks of like tectonic origin
more likely to have
metallogenic relationships
• The classification is
important for databases like

Proposed Reclassifications
• Four changes proposed
1. Taltson Domain and Lloyd Domains are
combined; Taltson is the retained name
2. Virgin River and Mudjatik Domains are
combined; Mudjatik is the retained name
3. The Virgin schist group is added to the
Taltson Domain
4. The Ennadai Domain is created in the NE
corner of the province
1. Lloyd/Taltson Domain
• Small domain in NW
Saskatchewan
• 2003 replacement of
the Western Granulite
Domain
• Lloyd Lake is a
geographic feature in
the domain’s centre
• Cree South project:
2007-2009

• Lloyd is combined with Taltson
• Taltson extends under the Athabasca
Basin and continues to the GSLsz
• Naming is based on geologic relationships
rather than a geographic feature

2. Virgin River/Mudjatik Domain
• Virgin River Domain (Lewry and Sibbald, 1977)
1.Virgin River: “belt of overall structural linearity”
2.No difference was cited between rock types
3.A variation in metamorphic conditions was noted
4.Virgin schist group in the VRD

Virgin River/Mudjatik domains
Virgin River/Mudjatik domains
• New geophysics are key to this interpretation
• Virgin River is a prominent positive magnetic anomaly on the shield
• Internal character is masked by NW trending lineaments

4. Ennadai Domain • Ennadai-Kaminak
appears in the 1987

• Energy and Mines

Ennadai shrinks in 1991
• Ennadai disappears in
1994
• Phelps Lake Project:
2001-2003 (Harper)
•Analytical support (GSC
collaboration) advances
understanding

Ennadai vs Mudjatik
• Extension of the CHsb
– Oceanic tectonic
environment
• 2.71-2.70 Ga intrusions
(minimum age of mafic
volcanic rocks)
• 2.68 rhyolite and granite
• Geochemical studies
identify low and high-
grade Ennadai
Low grade
Ennadai vs Mudjatik
• Both contain >2.7 Ga
orthogneiss.
• Ennadai: contains
~2680 Ga plutons
• Southern Hearne:
<2600 Ga
• Differences in the
provenance of the
volcanic rocks:
Oceanic vs Continental
• Where is the
transition?
Ennadai vs Mudjatik:
Where’s the boundary • The southern Hearne
extends beneath
almost the entire
Athabasca Basin
• There is a change
near the NE basin
boundary.
• Major change in the
northeast
Southern Ennadai boundary
Southern Ennadai boundary?
Ennadai southern Hearne
boundary? • Is there a geological
change?
• Unit marked granitic
migmatite complex
Ennadai southern Hearne
boundary? • Is there a geological
change?
• Unit marked granitic
migmatite complex
New Domain: Ennadai
• Contains both low- and high-grade rocks
of the Central Hearne supracrustal belt
• Differences in the provenance of the
volcanic rocks in Ennadai and Mudjatik:
• Oceanic vs Continental
• Boundary chosen using bedrock mapping,
analytical data and geophysics
Metallogeny: Mudjatik vs Ennadai
• Ennadai: Au and
VMS
• Mudjatik: U,
Sediment-hosted
base metals; Au
associated with
BIF
Summary • Taltson Domain is be
extended south of the Athabasca Basin
• Major changes proposed for the Mudjatik 1. Virgin River is removed
2. Virgin schist group moves from the former Virgin River Domain to the Taltson Domain
3. Ennadai Domain is separated from the Mudjatik Domain to the southwest
