BBC CHILDREN IN NEED 14 November 2014

You are invited to the

Pudsey Party.

Superheroes, accompanied

by Martha, from the Great

British Bake Off, have been

preparing for a fun packed

day.

Will you be wearing your pyjamas or

dressed as a superhero on Friday

14 November?

With the TV cameras on Newbury, and with

St Bart’s at the heart of the local community,

we hope that you will be joining us to have

some fun and make your donations to this

excellent cause.

The television cameras will be in school all

day on Friday 14 November broadcasting live

at Activity Time and during the evening when

the South West regional update will be from

St Bart’s.

Refreshments, face painting and the

presentation of cheques to camera will all be

part of this wonderful event.

Please contact Mrs Sims to share what you

have been doing to raise money as a

family/work group/collection of friends.

All ideas and information welcome – the BBC

will be interested in them all.

See you Friday 14 November!

Mrs M Sims, Deputy Headteacher

GROWING SUCCESS A group of Year 9 students have started a new

course, ASDAN Bronze this September. This

course encourages them to develop

confidence, team skills, independence and a

sense of community.

Their latest work has proved to be extremely

productive. The students were set the task of

harvesting and preparing the school vegetable

gardens for the winter. This was a huge task

where they were keen to get stuck in

harvesting marrows, pumpkins, Swiss chard,

courgettes, potatoes and beans. This was

followed by clearing all the remaining

vegetation and weeds, then digging over the

soil.

After harvesting was completed the students

were able to appreciate enjoying the produce

as we used the vegetables to make a vegetable

curry and spicy Swiss chard and potato pies,

which we shared as a picnic in the school

garden.

The students have been a pleasure to work

with on this project as they have been

interested in and asked lots of questions about

the creatures they have found in the garden

and about the plants they have harvested.

CURNOCK NEWS House Music

Curnock ended the first half of the

autumn term on a complete high

after being overall winners of House Music for

the third year in a row! Congratulations to all

our competitors and in particular our

instrumentalists who won the House

Instrument Cup with their rendition of 'Let me

entertain you'. Our conductor Katherine

Valentine was especially commended by the

judge for her performance. "One of the stars

of the evening."

The choir, conducted by Adam West, sang

'Don't stop me now' and our Year 8

composition 'Summertime Blues' was

performed by Max Walters (drums), Livi Day

(clarinet) and Lois Ryan, Megan Lay, Isabelle

Hole and Clarice Knapp (keyboards and

vocals).

Huge thanks go to our Music Captains, Adam

West, Katherine Valentine and Megan Bone

for their excellent leadership and outstanding

musical talent.

Student Successes

Other success stories from Curnock students

are:

Tilly Minchin 11C2 who was the overall

winner of the Newbury Young Songwriter

Competition with her song 'Cover Up'. She

won a £1,000 to spend at Hogan Music.

Lauren Bell 9C1who went through two sets of

trials before being picked for U15 Scotland

squad. She also plays football for Berkshire

county and Reading Academy. In addition

Lauren has been picked for the U15 England

squad for cricket following her trials and

performance statistics playing for Berkshire

county team.

Zara Ryan 12C2 was recently promoted to

County Team Captain for the Berkshire &

South Buckinghamshire swimming team. In a

recent competition they were 8th out of 38

which is a great achievement.

Josh Waters 13C1 continues to amaze us with

his karate skills. He recently won a bronze

medal at the European Karate Championships

which were held in Cyprus.

Joe Allport 8C2 gained his red belt in

kickboxing, which is just one level below a

black belt. Joe hopes to participate in the

Annual Kickboxing Championship which will

be taking place in Reading.

Jacob Chapman, Stephen Chooi, George

Howell and Joseph Middleton 9C2 all

appeared in the CBBC programme 'Wild

Thing', a programme aiming to get children off

computers and embracing nature.

These are the ones that we know about, but if

there are any other success stories that we are

unaware of please do let us know about them

in the Househeads' Office.

Notices

This half term is even busier so make sure you

keep an ear out for all notices being read.

Most important events will also be shown on

the Curnock noticeboard.

Chess Team

Last year our chess team did very well so we

hope they have been practising hard and

toning up the brain muscles! For those who

prefer a more active competition we are

looking to win House rugby and House

netball!

Curnock Events

It is good to see that generally our Year 7s are

settling in well to life at St Bart's. Hopefully

the half term break will have left them feeling

refreshed; the first half term is always tiring

with so much that is new to take on board.

Things will be feeling much more familiar

now and there's the Year 7 Christmas party to

look forward to on Monday 15 December!

It's been a great start to the year for Curnock -

let's hope we continue in the same fashion.

Mrs Mounsey and Mrs Kempster

FREE MUSIC TRIAL FOR

YEAR 7 Some spaces have become available to learn

the drum kit, timpani and tuned percussion at

St Bart’s through Berkshire Maestros. These

spaces are open to Year 7 students. Students

interested in this opportunity can take part in a

free trial prior to signing up to lessons.

Further details from Mr Grant or Mr Maunders

in the music department.
