From the Principal
Dear families,
Indigenous Cross This week we took possession of a hand crafted indigenous cross for use during school ceremonies. This stunning cross was created for our school by Michael Lyons. It will be on display in the office for all to see.
2019 St Joseph’s Swimming Carnival A very big thank you to Mr Mannes and the staff of St Joseph’s for such a smoothly run carnival. Thanks also to the students from St Francis College, who's help on the day was invaluable. Our students’ sportsmanship was outstanding. We were so proud of the way they supported and congratulated each other. Congratulations to Mackillop House who were victors on the day.
2019 Age Champions- Congratulations to our age champions: 8/9 Boys- Jamie Woods 10 Boys- Salvatore Alampi 11 Boys- Cooper Jones 12/13 Boys- Calan Nicholls 8/9 Girls- Emme Dowling 10 Girls- Charlotte Mallamace 11 Girls- Ella Thomas 12/13 Girls- Sophie Cross
Parents and Friends first 2019 meeting-come along! We are blessed to have an energetic friendly Parents and Friends association at St Joseph’s, Leeton. New members are always welcome. Attending our P&F meetings is an ideal way to meet fellow members of the St Joseph’s parent group. The first meeting for 2019 will be held on Monday February 18 at 6.30pm in the Staffroom.
Coolibah St Pick Up Each afternoon families can choose to pick up their children in Coolibah St. This pick up location operates as drive through pick up option. Students are walked by a teacher to the Coolibah gate at the bottom of our school grounds and are directed to their family car as it arrives at the front of the queue. We ask that you DO NOT park on Coolibah Street, school side, after 2:45. This is to prevent confusion for those using the drive through pick up option, as they presume any cars along this area are waiting in line to move forward. If you are using the Coolibah Street pick up you need to have your family name on the front passenger side visor. This assists our staff to efficiently get each child to their car. Our office staff are happy to make one for you.
Carnevale 2019 On Friday 1st March the school will celebrate with a party … Italian style! Carnevale is celebrated just before Lent and it is a time to enjoy the good things in life. You may already know that Italy is a catholic country and it is the custom there to take Lent (the six weeks before Easter) very seriously. People give up many of their favourite things to remember the sacrifice that Jesus made. But before they do, they have a big FESTA! So, on Friday 1st March we will celebrate with dress ups, music, delicious Italian food, games and much more.
Digital Technology Use Included in today’s newsletter is the updated version of the Acceptable Use Terms and Conditions for the use of technology and online services for learning and teaching. Please take a moment to read through this document.

NUDE FOOD DAY EVERY MONDAY
Every Monday will be Nude Food Day. On Nude Food Day, our aim is for student lunch boxes to be wrapper free. The purpose of this is to raise awareness of ways we can reduce waste/packaging and also to keep the healthy food profile high. We want our students to be informed about how we can be stewards of God’s creation. This is a practical way to show that each of us CAN make a difference to the amount of waste created. Thank you for your support.

ABORIGINAL SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITY WORKER
I would firstly like to acknowledge the traditional owners and custodians of this land the Wiradjuri people and pay my respects to the Elders both past and present.
A little about me; my name is Jassmine Leigh-Smith, I am a Gumbaynggirr woman from the Mid-North Coast but have been extremely fortunate to have worked with many different Aboriginal cultural groups, these include the Biripi, Bundjalung and Dunghutti Nations. I am grateful to be able to live and work within the Wiradjuri Nation.
I first began my role at St Joseph's in May 2018 and throughout that time I have been successful in helping teachers with class containing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander content. I also have been involved in numerous community events and forming connections with the school and community.
This year, I will be assisting and supporting staff in relation to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander content in the curriculum and enabling connections between the school and the local Indigenous community. I will also be supporting teachers in the development of programs and resources for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and Non-Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students with an emphasis on Indigenous culture and history.
I look forward to being able to work alongside teachers and with students to build cohesive relationships that illustrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture. This year at St Joseph’s we will be celebrating NAIDOC Week along with Reconciliation Week. I look forward to continuing to get to know you all and being apart of the St Joseph's team.
GOLDEN APPLE DOCKETS
A major fundraiser for St Joseph’s is the collection of GOLDEN APPLE DOCKETS. The Golden Apple Supermarket very generously donates money to the school according to the amount spent over the year by the school (and extended) community.
This is an EASY fundraiser for the school, so please KEEP YOUR DOCKETS AND SEND THEM IN WITH YOUR CHILD TO BE COLLECTED IN THEIR CLASS.
INDIGENOUS CROSS
This year, St Joseph’s is excited to announce we have purchased a handcrafted freestanding Aboriginal cross for our Liturgies. The cross depicts how the Wiradjuri peoples journey to heaven. We have been lucky enough to have Michael Lyons craft our cross and tell us the meaning behind each symbol. Both side of the cross have been hand painted and carved to illustrate Wiradjuri Totems along with meeting places, water holes, camp sites, love and the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The cross will be displayed at our Liturgies and within the school. The cross will be displayed in the front office if you would like to see the fine details in the carving and paintings.

Catholic Education Diocese of Wagga Wagga
Acceptable Use Terms and Conditions for the use of technology and online services for learning and teaching
Information for Students, Parents/Residential Guardians
By enrolling your child in a school in Catholic Education, Diocese of Wagga Wagga, you and your
child agree to abide by our policy in relation to the use of digital technology. It is important that you
and your child understand the policy and terms associated with the conditions of use of technology
in our schools.
Policy Statement
Staff and students at schools in the Catholic Education, Diocese of Wagga Wagga (CEDWW) use
electronic communications and digital technologies, including the internet, for learning and
teaching, and acknowledge they must be used responsibly. Online behaviour should at all times
demonstrate a Christ‐centred respect for the dignity of each person. Therefore, our schools believe
the development of digital citizens who demonstrate ethical and responsible online behaviour is
essential, and is best taught in partnership between home and school.
Using electronic communications and digital technologies to harass, bully or humiliate any individual or group of individuals is prohibited.
Use of digital technologies in our schools The school utilises a range of digital devices and services to facilitate an engaging and effective
learning environment for students. To enable them to work in this environment, your child will have
a digital account (“Account”) that includes an email account and access to the internet. As part of
their learning experience, students will be exposed to tools and information that we control and
others that we do not, which will include:
● Email - using their email account, students will be able to send and receive emails from staff
and students within the school as well as email accounts outside the school.
● Google Classroom - a learning environment only accessed by staff and students
● Google Suite - a collection of online tools for creating, storing and collaborating with other
students and staff.
● Online learning applications - a range of cloud hosted tools are provided to support learning
across the entire curriculum. Some of these tools allow students to capture and store audio
and video content aligned to their lessons and assessments.
Information about each student and the digital content they create is stored electronically. To
facilitate and engage in learning, personal information that may include name, date of birth and
email account details is shared with services such as Google and other learning technology providers.
This may mean information is transferred, processed and stored outside Australia. Regardless of
location, due diligence is undertaken to ensure our service providers have robust practices in place to
maintain the security and integrity of student information.
Acceptable Use of digital technologies - student responsibilities
All students and staff who utilise our digital technology and services are regularly required to review
and agree to our Acceptable Use Terms and Conditions, (AUTC) which is available here.
Acknowledgement is undertaken online as a step to accessing our digital services.
It is important that students understand their obligations and rights as defined under the AUTC. To
ensure this, Parents/Residential Guardians are encouraged to read the AUTC and discuss safe and
responsible use of digital technology with the student.

Catholic Education Diocese of Wagga Wagga
Monitoring and protection of the School’s digital environment
The Catholic Education Diocese of Wagga Wagga (CEDWW) and the School acknowledges the
responsibility to provide safe and secure online services and reserves the right to capture, store and
review the use of digital technology in the School including internet browsing, emails and social
media across the CEDWW and Schools’ provided network. During school hours, CEDWW will
respond to situations identified where there is a high risk to student welfare. While CEDWW will
monitor student behaviour on our devices and network at all hours, parents and guardians are
ultimately responsible for their children’s welfare, and are reminded to ensure their children are
using technology safely and responsibly, particularly outside of school hours.
All users are advised that the School and CEDWW will cooperate with legal authorities and/or third
parties in the investigation of any suspected or alleged crime or civil wrong and take appropriate
disciplinary action including referral to police regarding any digital breaches by students or staff.
Monitoring Usage: CEDWW monitors usage by all staff and students including emails, internet,
collaboration and social media applications that is conducted on any device connected to the
CEDWW network and on CEDWW issued devices on any network.
Internet Filtering: The CEDWW network has an internet filter to minimise the risk of exposure to
online content that may be harmful to children. Be aware that there is still a chance that students
are able to inadvertently or deliberately access inappropriate material, so the filters are regularly
reviewed and updated.
Use of Social Media Social media can be defined as how we use technology to communicate and connect with others.
Despite the range of positive uses for social media, there are also a number of ethical and legal issues
associated with its use. Parents should be aware that there are a number of legal liabilities that may
arise, particularly in relation to issues pertaining to reputational damage, and defamation and other
criminal matters.
Parents/Residential Guardians can ensure they abide by the laws and the School’s expectations, by
complying with the following:
● The School, its staff and members of its community should not be mentioned or discussed in
a negative or defamatory way;
● Photographs of students in school uniform, and should not be posted if they have the
potential to bring negative connotations towards the Schools or its staff and students;
● Photographs containing other students should not be posted without the express consent of
the other child/children’s parents;
● Email addresses of parents, staff and students should not be given to other people without
their express consent; and
● Parents are discouraged from making contact with students via any form of social media
without the express consent of the student’s parents.
Questions or Concerns? CEDWW schools have established our digital technology policy and practices with a view to the
safety and security of our students. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the School.
