Sect.I.THEREisathreefoldfearfoundinman,viz.

1.Natural.

2.Sinful.

3.Religiousfear.

1. Natural fear, of which all are partakers that partake of the commonnature, notoneexcepted.

Natural fear is the trouble or perturbation of mind, from theapprehensionofapproachingevil, orimpendingdanger.

The word φεθος comes from a verb* that signifies flight; this is notalways sinful, but it is always the fruit andconsequentof sin.Since sinenteredintoournature, thereisnoshakingofffear.NosoonerhadAdamtransgressedbuthefearedandfled, hidinghimselfamongthetreesofthe

Themeaning is not that they did, or could put the evil oneminute fartherfromtheminreality, butonlybyimaginationandfancy:theyshuttheirown eyes, and would not see it, lest it should give an unpleasinginterruption to their mirth; and this is the reason why death puts thelivingintonomorefear, becauseitisapprehendedasremote, andatanundetermineddistance, whereasiftheprecisetimeofdeathwereknown, especiallyifthattimewerenear, itwouldgreatlyscarandterrify.

This is the nature of natural fear, the infelicity of nature, whichwe allgroanunder theeffectsof: it is inall the creatures in somedegree;butamongthemall, nonesuffermorebyitthanman, forherebyhebecomeshisowntormentor;norisanytormentgreaterthanthiswhenitprevailsinahighdegreeuponus.Indeedallconstitutionsandtempersadmitnotthe samedegreesof fear; somearenaturally courageousandstout, likethe lion formagnanimity and fortitude; others exceeding timorous andfaint-hearted,likethehareorhart,onelittledogwillmakeahundredofthemfleebeforehim.Lutherwasamanofgreatcourageandpresenceofmind in dangers,† Melancthon very timorous and subject todespondency. Thus the difference betwixt them is expressed in one of

SectII.Thereisafearwhichisformallyandintrinsicallysinful, notonlyourinfelicity, butourfault;notoursimpleafflictionandburden, butourgreat evil and provocation; and such is the fear here dissuaded, calledtheir fear, i.e. the fear wherewith carnal and unbelieving men do fearwhendangersthreatenthem;andthesinfulnessofitliesinfivethings.

1. In the spring and cause of it which is unbelief, and an unworthydistrust of God, when we dare not rely upon the security of a Divinepromise, nor trust toGod'sprotection in thewayofourduty.Thiswasthe very case of that people, Isa. 30:15. "Thus saith the Lord God, theHolyOneof Israel, inreturningandrestshallyebesaved, inquietnessandinconfidenceshallbeyourstrength;andyewouldnot.Butyesaid,no,forwewill fleeuponhorses;thereforeyeshall flee:andwewillrideupon the swift; therefore shall they that pursue you be swift. Onethousandshallfleeattherebukeofone,"&c.

Thusstoodthecase:Sennacheribwithamightyhostwasready-toinvadethem;thisputsthemintoafright; inthisdistressGodassuresthem, bythe mouth of his prophet, that in "returning and rest they should besaved, in quietness and confidence should be their strength." But ye said no, q. d.we dare not trust to that, a goodhorsewill do usmore service at such a time than a good promise; Egypt is a bettersecurityintheireyethanHeaven.Thisisthefruitofgrossinfidelity.And

aswickedmendothusforsakeGod,andcleavetothecreatureinthetimeof trouble, so there is found a spice of this distrustfulness of God,producing fear and trouble, in the best ofmen. It was in the disciplesthemselves,Matth.8:26."Whyareyefearful,Oyeoflittlefaith?"Astormhad befallen them at sea, and danger began to threaten them, andpresentlyyoufindastormwithin, theirfearsweremoreboisterousthanthewinds, andhadmoreneedofcalmingthanthesea;anditwasallfromtheirunbelief,asChrist tells them; the less their faith, thegreater theirfear.IfamancanbutrelyuponGodinapromise, sofarasheisenabledto believe, so far he will reckon himself well secured.* Illyricus, in hiscatalogue of the Witnesses, relates this remarkable passage of oneAndreasProlcs, agodlyageddivine, wholivedsomewhatbeforeLuther, and taught many points soundly, according to his light then. He wascalled to a Synod at Milan, and afterwards in the Lateran, where, opposing a proposition of the Pope about burdening the churchwith anew holiday, he was brought into much danger, and escaping verynarrowlyfromRome, heboughthimabowandweapons:butashewasriding, hebegantobethinkhimself, thatthecausewasnothisbutGod's,andnot tobemaintainedwith swordandbow;and if itwere, yetwhatcould such a decrepit oldmandowithweapons? uponwhichhe threwawayhisweapons,committedhimself,his.cause,andhisjourneytoGod,relieduponhispromisesmorethanswordorbow,andcamehomesafe,andafterwardsdiedquietlyinhisbed.

2.Thesinfulnessoffearliesintheexcessandimmoderacyofit,whenwefear more than we ought; for it may be truly said of our fears, as thePhilosopherspeaksofwaters, difficilesuisterminiscontinentur, itishardtokeepthemwithinbounds;everybushisabear, everypettytroubleputsusintoafright;ourfearexceedsthevalueandmeritofthecause.Itisagreat sin to love or fear any creature above the rate of a creature, as iftheyweremastersofallour temporalandeternal comforts.Thuswhenthe men of Israel heard of the confederacy and conjunction of theirenemies against them, the text saith, "their hearts weremoved, as thetrees"ofthewoodaremovedwiththewind,"Isa.7:1.orasweusetosayproverbially, likeanaspine leaf: It isasadsight tobeholdmenshakingandquiveringas the treesdoonawindyday;yet thusdid thehouseofDavid, partlythroughtheremembranceofpastcalamities, butespecially

through incredulity inGod'sprotecting care in theirpresent and futuredangers; yea, this is toooften the fault of goodmen in creature-fear aswellasincreature-love,totransgressthedueboundsofmoderation.Itisnoted of Jacob, though a man of much faith, and one that had thesweetestencouragementtostrengthenit, bothfromformerexperiences, andGod's gracious promises to bewith him, yetwhenEsauwas comenigh,hewas"greatlyafraidanddistressed,"Gen.32:7.Itwasbutalittlebefore,thatGodhadgraciouslyappearedtohim,andsentaroyalguardofangelstoattendhim,eventwohostsorarmiesofangels,ver.1,2.andyet as soon as Esau approached him, hewas afraid, yea greatly afraid, afraidanddistressed, notwithstandingsuchanencouragingvisionasthiswas.

Objection 1. But may not a good man, whose sins are pardoned, beaffrightedwithhisownfancies, andscaredwithhisownimaginations?

Solution.Nodoubthemay, forthereisatwofoldfountainoffears, oneinthe body, another in the soul, one in the constitution, another in theconscience; it is the affliction and infelicity of many pardoned andgracious souls, to be united and married to such distempered and ill-habitedbodies,asshallafflict themwithoutanyrealcausefromwithin, and wound them by their own diseases and distempers; and thesewounds cannomorebepreventedor curedby their reasonor religion,thananyotherbodilydisease,supposeanagueorfever,canbesocured.Thus*physicianstellus,whenadustcholerormelancholyoverflowsandaboundsinthebody,asinthehypochondriacaldistempers,&c.whatsadeffectsithathuponthemindaswellasuponthebody,thereisnotonlyasad and fearful aspect or countenance without, but sorrow, fear, andafflicting thoughts within; this is a sore affliction to many good men, whoseconsciencesaresprinkledwiththebloodofChristfromguilt, butyet God sees good to clog them with such affliction as this for theirhumiliation, andforthepreventionofworseevils.

2. We know also that nothing hinders the execution of their wickedpurposes against us but the restraints of Providence. 3. We find, that God hath many times let loose these lions upon hispeople, and given them leave to tear his lambs in pieces, and suck theblood of his saints: how well soever he loves them, yet hath he oftendelivered them into the hands of their enemies, and suffered them toperpetrate andact the greatest crueltiesupon them; thebestmenhavesuffered the worst things, and the histories of all ages have delivereddownuntousthemosttragicalrelationsoftheirbarbaroususage.

blessed clasp and bond whereof all believers are. I think the clearunderstandingofthenature, extent, andstabilityofthecovenant, andofour interest therein, wouldgoagreatway in the cureofour sinful andslavishfears.

A covenant is more than a naked promise; in the covenant, God hathgraciously consulted our weakness, fears, and doubts, and thereforeproceeds with us in the highest way of solemnity, confirming hispromises by oath, Heb. 6:13, 17 and by his seals, Rom. 6:11. Puttinghimselfunderthemostsolemntiesandengagementsthatcanbe,tohispeople,thatfromsofirmaratificationofthecovenantwithus,wemighthavestrongconsolation,Heb.6:18.Hehathsoordered it, that itmightafford strong supports, and themost reviving cordials to our faint andtimorousspirits, inalltheplungesoftroublebothfromwithinandfromwithout. In the covenant, Godmakes over himself to his people, to beunto them a God, Jer. 31:33. Heb. 8:10.
