I can describe how an author uses flashbacks and foreshadowing in a story to develop a character.
What is a flashback?A flashback is a scene that interrupts a story to describe an earlier event. We learn about a character from a
flashback.“I remember when
Shaggy and I searched the haunted house. A
ghost popped out from the door and
scared me !”
“When I learned that the ghost was a
*sham, I was never scared of them
again!”!
I can describe how an author uses flashbacks and foreshadowing in a story to develop a character.*sham-a fake or counterfeit
What is foreshadowing?Foreshadowing is the authors' use of clues to
hint what might happen later in a story. We learn about future of a story from
foreshadowing.“At the start of the Wizard of Oz, Mrs. Gultch morphs into the wicked witch. We are shown a
foreshadow or hint of Dorothy’s future!”

Sandy is hit by a truckClimax
• Foreshadowing- (Page 81,Lines 29-31) “LOW
GEAR FOR 1 ½ MILES. DANGEOUS
TO CYLISTS.” As a result, the reader can
infer that someone may get hurt or an
accident may occur on that road.
• Sandy is hit by a truck and falls into a
serious coma.
• External Conflict-Will Sandy survive after
the coma?
• Flashback-(Page 84 Lines 1-4)“They forgot how
they called their older sister bossy and
remembered how - she shared her pocket
money with them.” This reveals that the
twins miss their sister and they took her for
granted.
• Lob waits outside. He is forlorn and
sobbing. Lob is permitted to visit Sandy in
the hospital.
• Sandy awakens from the coma when she
senses Lob. The doctors are amazed!
• Mr. Pengelly tells
everyone that the visitor
could not have been Lob.
Lob was killed in the
truck accident. Sandy’s
brother buried Lob at sea.
• Who could the shepherd
be? No one could explain
the German Shepherd’s
presence at the hospital
and the wet footprints left
by the dog on the stairs.
What do you think? Did
Lob save Sandy’s life?
What can you infer from
the story ending?
