Beldad, who passed the licensure nursing exam last June in Japan, had an inspiring story that captured the attention of the production team behind Happy Surprise! This is the documentary series of NHK TV that produced the flash mob for her. The 30yearold Rose, is the eldest of three siblings. Her financially challenged family could not afford to send her to school but that didn't stop Rose. Motivated and ambitious, Rose was an academic scholar since high school at the Ateneo de Zamboanga and college at Western Mindanao State University. Rose took up Computer Science since it was available on the scholarship program. Right after college, Rose worked as a clerk at the Registrar’s Office at the university. During this time, her father got sick and the family, still cash strapped, was not able to provide the best care for him. When her father died, Rose decided to leave Zamboanga and work in a call center in Pampanga so she can provide for her family. She later moved to Makati. It was Rose's friend who saw an advertisement in a newspaper about a study program looking for students who would to like study and work as nurses in Japan. When Rose found out about the program, she immediately applied and breezed through the application process. When she got her visa, it was only then that she told her mother about her trip abroad. Her mother was hesitant at first but saw that it was a good opportunity. Her mother eventually gave Rose her blessings. In April 2009, Rose started her studies in Japan, taking up Nihonggo language classes for two years and the nursing course for another three years. “Mahirap iwan ang pamilya. (It was hard to leave the family.) But I did it for them,” says Rose. Rose had to work part time to augment her monthly allowance of roughly P15,000 since she continued to send financial support to her family back home. While the program provided for her stay in a dormitory, meals and tuition, almost twothirds of her allowance was sent home to Zamboanga. During weekends, she worked as a dishwasher or house cleaner, working till late at night to support her self. There were even moments when she had to walk through snow around midnight as she came home from work. 343 Like (http://manilastandardtoday.com/panel/banner/ho banner=75) SEARCH LIFESTYLE BY KEYWORD: BY DATE: e.g. Pork barrel fund scam SEARCH mm/dd/yyyy SEARCH IN THIS CATEGORY ▪ LIFESTYLE COLUMNS (HTTP://MANILASTANDARDTODAY.COM/CATE COLUMNS/) ▪ ARTS & LIFE (HTTP://MANILASTANDARDTODAY.COM/CATE LIFE/) ▪ FASHION (HTTP://MANILASTANDARDTODAY.COM/CATE Related Searches Makati City Philippines News Philippines Filipino People Philippine Star Gloria Macapagal Arroyo Makati City Republic Act ? A Pinay's struggle and triumph in JapanBy Carla Mortel | Sep. 29, 2013 at 12:01am

content/uploads/2013/09/2013_sept29_life8.jpg)Rose endured loneliness andbeing away from home for her

family.

44Tweet 2

“It was hard and I do have pride but I kept thinking of my family,” sharesRose. “It was hard to work and study in another country. I kept myproblems to myself to keep my family from worrying. There were times, Iwanted to give up but it was not possible to go home."

When her mother got sick, Rose wanted to quit and personally care forher. Over a phone call, her mother told Rose to stay in Japan and finishher studies. With tears, they said their goodbyes. In February 2011, Rosefinally came home for the burial of her mom.

“It was hard for me not being able to care for my own mother whilestudying to care for other people. I felt a big loss because it was my momwho gave me strength and inspiration. Her memories kept me going andprevented me to go into depression.”

Rose remembers the support and encouragement of her teachers in thenursing school, and fellow Filipinos living in Japan and her coworkers.One of her fondest moments was when her friends treated her to a trip inKyoto, which is considered one of the most beautiful places in Japan.

Rose's training in the prerequisite language proficiency was not withoutits challenges. All her lessons were taught in Nihonggo while the apprenticeship program was held in therural areas where she has to pay extra attention to the way dialects are spoken. Her hard work paid offwhen she took up her licensure nursing examination in Nihonggo. Just like any other student, she wasrequired to write her answers in Kanji and Hiragana, which she accomplished with great success in herfirst attempt. Rose now works as a registered nurse in Shonan Kamakura General Hospital in KamakuraCity.

Her story was first featured in a local newspaper and this was spotted by the NHK TV team. Theycarefully planned a surprise for Rose by contacting the hospital administrators, her immediate family andclose friends. The TV crew made Rose believe she was part of documentary featuring tourist spots inManila for overseas Filipinos while her wellwishers secretly gathered and practiced their dance moves.

On the day of the flash mob, Rose got the surprise of her life when she saw her siblings, Mae Irish andRodwin, close friends Ceilo Bastero and Cherryl Ann Bantilan and others dancing in celebration of herdetermination, perseverance and achievement. Even the director of the Kanagawa Iryou Gijutsu SenmonGakko nursing college flew from Japan and joined the happy event.

“It was totally unexpected. From the airport, the director of the TV channel took me to Intramuros andthen to the mall. Nagulat ako. (I was surprised.) I was supposed to meet my sister at the airport but shewasn’t able to make it on some excuse. I also invited my high school friends to meet up but they alsodeclined. I was so disappointed but now I know what they have been up to,” says Rose with a big smile.

“It was hard to believe. This is not real,” she says.

Rose was the first foreigner and Filipino to be featured as a subject in the Happy Surprise! documentaryseries . It was also the first time for the TV crew to partially film the documentary, which was aired onSept. 28, outside Japan.
