From the Principal’s Pen Happy New Year! As we transition into a new year, we would like to share with you an exciting event taking place on Thursday, February 15 from 2:00-3:00. On this Thursday afternoon, we will host our first annual South Side Showcase. This event will invite parents, guardians, and other guests of honor into our classrooms to gain an understanding of the learning taking place at South. Students will have the opportunity to share portfolio pieces with their guest of honor as well as model daily learning activities. More details will be sent home soon. Stay tuned. For parents of third and fourth grade students, it is important to note testing sea- son is right around the corner. Starting at the end of February and again in April, third and fourth grade students will participate in ISTEP. Also, in March, third grad- ers will complete the IREAD3, which determines whether or not students can transi- tion to fourth grade next school year. Please continue to support your student s learning efforts at home with reading and math fact fluency work. We will be in communication with more detailed information as the testing season approaches. This months social-emotional skill is Emotion Management. This month during your students class meeting time, he or she will learn how to identify feelings, stop and name feelings, learn techniques to calm down, and how to manage learning challenges. Please continue to ask your student about these lessons and find ways to apply these social-emotional learning strategies at home. As we begin the second half of the school year, please do not hesitate to reach out to your students teacher or school administration as we are always here to answer questions to support your students learning experience. Please continue to make sure that your children are dressed warmly for outside recess. Our students will go outside if the temperature/wind chill is 15 degrees or above. Proper dress should include boots, gloves, hats and snow pants. Students who do not have snow pants will not be allowed to play in the snow at recess, they will only be allowed to play on the black top. Because so many items look the same, it is helpful if you label you stu-dent’s clothing. Please also be aware that

we must have a doctor’s note in order for your child to stay indoors at recess due to illness.

Parents, Do you have a new home or cell phone number? Has someone you listed as an emergency contact for you child changed their contact information? It is very important that we are able to contact you in the event of an illness or other concern. Please make sure you notify the office any time there are changes for either you or your emergency contacts by sending a note with your student listing the new information. Thank you.

Indoor Winter Activities for Kids When the kids are, anxious for the chance to get out there and romp in that wonderful white stuff, but the conditions are just too blustery, treat them to some indoor winter games instead. From building an indoor snowman to cooking up some snowman snacks, these ideas for indoor winter activities celebrate the cold and snowy outdoors in the comfort of your home.

Indoor Snowball Fight: There's just something about a fresh snowfall that really revs up the kids’ energy levels. Help them expel some of that excitement with a little practice session for the snowball fight they’ll have when they finally do get to go out and play. Roll up balls of paper, white socks or make your own fabric snowballs. Give each kid a bucket of these indoor snowballs and let the toss them at each other for fun.

Winter Hot Cocoa Picnic: After the indoor snowball fight, the kids will want to warm up with some hot cocoa. Throw a white blanket on the floor and sprinkle it with cotton balls. Place it near your fireplace or build a faux fire and place it in the middle of the blanket. Brew up a pot of hot cocoa, serve it with cookies and let the kids gather on the floor for a warm winter picnic.

Homemade Winter Cottage: If you have a large box and a few craft supplies, then you have the mater ials need-ed to help the kids build their own winter cottage. Cut the window and door holes out of the box and then let them dec-orate with paint, glue, markers, ornaments and, of course, fake snow for the roof. Don't forget to top it with a chimney! (You can make one our of the leftover, cut out cardboard.)

Build a Snowman: Think you need real snow and the outdoors to build a snowman? Think again. Stuff a bunch of large white pillowcases (with pillow stuffing or even crumpled up paper) and you have the makings for an indoor snowman. Velcro can help to stack them as well as to adhere items such as buttons, eyes, and nose onto your indoor snowman.

Winter Bingo Game: Make your own bingo sheets using winter -themed clipart. Switch the order of the clipart on each sheet. Print an extra sheet to cut out the clipart images and place them in a bowl. Use these to call the game of Bingo. Snow-cap style candies or mini marshmallows make fun, edible, winter-themed Bingo card markers.

Picnic lunch: Pretend it's summer and have a picnic lunch on a blanket in the middle of the living room. Bring out all the stuffed animals for a touch of the outdoors.

Fondue: Dig out the fondue pot and all share in putting together a fondue. It's always fun to spear some tasty goodies into the fondue pot while sitting in front of a crackling fire.

Puzzle: Take out that 1000 piece puzzle, spread it out on the kitchen table and dig in.

Sock puppets: Go through the sock drawers for a handful of orphan socks. Get some yarn, buttons and big fat nee-dles. Have fun creating wacky puppets and then put on an equally wacky puppet show.

Board games: Dust off Candyland, Monopoly, Scrabble and whatever other board games you've forgotten in the closet. Pour some hot cider and let the fun begin.

Winter Pinata: Who says pinatas are only for bir thday par ties? A snow day sure feels like a holiday to kids, so why not celebrate with this exciting kids game? Fill a snowman or winter-themed piñata with treats. Don’t have one on hand? You can make your own with supplies you probably have around the house, including a simple paper bag piñata. Clear a space inside where you can hang it and let them whack away until it spills out the goodies. Another fun idea is to fill the piñata with white confetti to make it “snow” when it breaks open.

Snowball Fun: Crumple up sheets of paper to make snowballs and try one or more of the following activities:

Set a Hula-Hoop on the floor and try to toss the snowballs into the circle’

Place a laundry basket on the able and try to toss the snowballs into the basket.

Place ping-pong ball on the mouth of an empty plastic soda bottle, then try to knock off the ball iwth the snow balls without knocking over the bottle.

Winter-Themed Kids Movies: When it’s cold outside, one of the best ways to keep warm and entertained is to snuggle up under the blankets and watch a winter-themed movie. Perhaps they can build a fort with blankets and watch from inside. Some sugges-tions for kid’s movies with a winter theme:

Happy Feet

Mr. Popper’s Penguins If school is closed due to snowy weather, you can invite the neighborhood kids over from an impromptu party featuring some of these indoor fun activities.
