Beth Torah Men’s Club gave us some of the proceeds from their Dallas Kosher BBQ Championship for the third year in a row.

A grant from the Woolf Foundation supports activities like this painting class where residents created artwork for our new tribute cards.

Jewish Federation’s allocation and grants provide vital funds and our visits with groups like their YAD LEADS bring smiles and joy.

2017 ANNUAL CAMPAIGNA Message from the CHAI Board President and CHAI CEOWe are happy to report 2017 has been a fulfilling year for CHAI on several fronts, including serving our mission to residents and non-resident clients, increasing community participation, improving our facilities, meeting fundraising and fiscal performance targets, continuing our learning, and having some fun along the way.

We recognized last year, since CHAI had been in existence for 34 years, some of our residents were facing aging issues at an increasing rate and we needed to prepare our agency to better understand their needs. So, in 2017 we formed an Aging Residents Task Force made up of several CHAI board members and staff, as well as leaders and professionals from our partner agencies and service providers in the community. This task force has made great strides in preparing CHAI to meet our residents’ needs and increase community preparedness. We surveyed how other communities in the U.S. are serving the needs of their aging members with intellectual disabilities. We found that CHAI, and the Dallas Jewish community by extension, is one of the catalysts on this important front.

Thanks to a generous bequest from Ludwig Michael, husband of our late founder Carmen Miller Michael, of blessed memory, we were able to begin updating our homes. During the year, we remodeled Levy House with updated kitchens, bathrooms, flooring, lighting, and paint; and we have recently begun the remodeling of Miller House. These cheerful improvements are exciting for our residents, staff, volunteers, and other visitors.

CHAI achieved another consecutive year of successful fiscal performance and that is no small task. Our Annual Campaign as well as our special event, the CHAI Tea, both exceeded their fundraising targets. This accomplishment, as well as sound budgetary management by our staff, enabled CHAI to cover its costs and build its operating reserve in 2017. This is especially encouraging in light of increasing pressure on Medicaid and other government funding sources that caused a decrease in our revenue for some of our programs.

CHAI achieved another milestone in 2017 thanks to our wonderful volunteers who performed approximately 1000 hours of service to our residents and organization. Your dedication is so appreciated and enjoyed by all.

Thanks to each of you for your support. You have enabled CHAI to have another good year. More importantly, you have enabled our residents and non-resident clients to thrive.

Lastly, CHAI recently experienced a great loss when Sheryl Protas, who had been a resident of CHAI for 27 years, succumbed to illness. We all miss Sheryl, but are better because we knew her. While losing Sheryl was so sad, it was so uplifting to see how our staff and community came together to care for and remember her.

Thanks so much to all of you,

Jim Liston Lisa BrodskyBoard President Chief Executive Officer

Mission StatementCommunity Homes for Adults, Inc. (CHAI) is a non-sectarian, non-profit corporation under Jewish auspices that provides programs and services to enable adults with intellectual disabilities to live full, rich lives in a safe environment and to meaningfully participate in the community.

For 35 years, CHAI has fulfilled this mission serving families in the community.

Often those who are caring for a loved one with an intellectual disability will ask:

“Who will take care of my adult child (or sibling) when I no longer can?”

CHAI has been there to answer: “We will” for many families over the past few decades. With the support of our generous donors, we will be able to continue to do so for years into the future. On behalf of those families we say: “Thank You!”

Donors helped increase the quality of life for the individuals served at CHAI and are listed here in categories from $180 and up.
