iSmile Orthodontics

Here at iSmile, we care for every size smile. The majority of our patients are children and teenagers and we can begin to see children as young as seven. Early assessments enable our orthodontists to determine if your child will require orthodontic treatment once all their adult teeth have erupted. This is exceptionally valuable to both yourself and your child, as early detection and treatment can prevent more serious problems from developing later on in life, which will benefit both your child and your wallet!

If we believe that your child will benefit from orthodontics, we can anticipate the optimum time to begin treatment which will deliver the best results. Using modern technology in our state-of-the-art facility, we can give your child a beautiful, healthy and straight smile.

Why should my child have orthodontic treatment?

The Australian Society of Orthodontists (ASO) and the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommend the initial orthodontic evaluation should occur at the first sign of orthodontic problems when your child is 7 years old. This ensures early detection, monitoring and treatment which can prevent more serious problems from developing in the future.

If we identify that they will benefit from orthodontic treatment, we can anticipate the best time to begin treatment to deliver the best results. If we believe orthodontic treatment is not yet necessary, we will carefully monitor your child’s growth and development to begin treatment at the ideal time.

Orthodontics creates a straight, beautiful smile which primarily contributes to healthy teeth and gums and improved function. They may also:

• Reduce the risk of tooth decay and gum disease

• Decrease the risk of excessive tooth wear

• Improve chewing, breathing and speech

• Reduce the risk of dental trauma

• Correct improper jaw relationships

• Reduce stress on facial muscles and jaw joints

What signs should I look for that may indicate my child needs to see an orthodontist?

This depends on the condition of your child’s oral health, as there may be a number of symptoms that will require braces to fix. These signs include, but are not limited to:

• Early or late loss of baby teeth

• Difficulty chewing/biting food

• Mouth breathing

• Finger/thumb sucking

• Crowded, misplaced or crooked teeth

• Jaws that pop or make noises when opening and closing

• Teeth that come together abnormally or do not come together at all

• Teeth and jaws that are not in proportion to the face

• Crowded front teeth at around 7 or 8 years old

If your child is experiencing any of the above, book in for a consultation with iSmile Orthodontics today.

If my child hasn’t displayed any signs of orthodontic problems, should I still bring them in when they are 7 years old?

Yes! Even if your child hasn’t displayed any orthodontic problems, an orthodontic appointment can determine whether they might experience problems in the future. If so, their development will be observed to determine a suitable time to start treatment. Prevention is better than a cure!

The advantages of early treatment include:

• Creating room for crowded, erupting teeth

• Creating facial symmetry through influencing jaw growth

• Reducing the risk of trauma to protruding front teeth

• Preserving space for unerupted teeth

• Reducing the need for tooth removal

• Reducing treatment time of braces

What is orthodontic treatment and what does it include?

Orthodontics is a branch of dentistry that specialises in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of dental and facial irregularities. The practice of orthodontics requires the professional skill in the design, application and control of advanced treatment appliances (braces or plates) to bring teeth, lips and jaws into proper alignment and achieve facial balance.

Braces

iSmile offers a variety of brace styles depending on the person. Our most common options are:

• Ceramic braces (clear braces)

• Traditional metal braces

• Functional appliances (plates)

• Invisible braces (Invisalign)

The most popular style is the traditional metal frame. We use state-of-the-art self-litigating methods to hold the wire in place for all of our bracket systems. This is very beneficial to your child’s treatment as it allows their teeth to move a little faster and prolongs the lifespan and durability of the wires. The traditional metal braces are made from high-grade stainless-steel metal brackets and archwires. If your child wishes to have a bit of fun with their braces, they have the option of adding coloured elastics for a colourful and unique smile!

We also offer clear or ceramic braces. These work in the same way as the traditional metal braces and are more commonly used for teenagers and adults for cosmetic concerns as they are far less visible. However, these require more attention and diligent oral hygiene than traditional braces.

Appliances

Your child may also require an appliance that can be used either independently or in conjunction with braces treatment. These include:

• Maxillary Expansion Appliances: This is a palatal expander that widens the upper jaw. This is used by patients whose upper jaw is narrow.

• Functional Appliances/ Bite Correcting Appliances: These are used to treat discrepancies between the upper and lower teeth, often by encouraging the lower jaw to catch up to the upper jaw in growth.

• Separators: These are little rubber doughnuts that may be placed in between teeth to push them apart. This is done to either allow space for orthodontic bands for appliances, or to let new teeth erupt correctly.

• Temporary Anchorage Devices: These are small, simple screws that are placed in the jaws to facilitate tooth movement.

• Retainers: These hold teeth in their new, correct positions after they have been straightened.

How does orthodontic treatment at iSmile work?

Consultation

There is no charge for the initial exam and consultation here at iSmile Orthodontics, nor is a referral needed. Photographs and x-rays will be taken of your child’s mouth to analyse their oral health and development of their teeth. The specialised orthodontist will carry out a comprehensive clinical exam to discuss your child’s diagnosis and the different treatment plans available; or if immediate treatment is not required, a management plan to monitor changes until the ideal time.

We understand that orthodontic treatment is a big commitment for both you and your child, so we allow about one hour for the first appointment to give you time to ask questions to gain a clear understanding of your child’s specific orthodontic needs in a relaxed and friendly environment.

Start Appointment

Your child may be a little nervous in the lead up to the fitting of their braces, therefore, it’s important to remind them that there is no need to panic as the process is virtually painless. Your child will have their braces/ appliances fitted in our state-of- the-art facility.

They may experience some discomfort after the braces have been applied for the first time and this is completely natural. Encouraging them to eat soft foods or take painkillers may help with the adjustment process.

Check-Ins

Your child is required to return to iSmile periodically throughout their treatment to ensure their teeth are making good progress. If they have metal or ceramic braces, these appointments will involve a tightening of the wire to increase the pressure on their teeth which causes them to move.

NOTE: The most popular appointment times are early morning and after school hours. Unfortunately, we cannot schedule all appointments for students during these times. Therefore, these times are reserved for short appointments, which generally are for check-ins. Since the majority of appointments are scheduled 8 to 10 weeks apart, most students should miss minimal school due to orthodontic appointments.

Completion

Once your child’s braces have achieved the desired result they will be removed, yay! To ensure their teeth stay in their new positions, they will most likely be required to wear a retainer at night for a period of time determined by our orthodontists. An impression will be taken of their teeth to create the retainer. Additionally, some patients may be fitted with a permanent retainer wire behind their teeth. Everyone is different, therefore it’s important for your child to follow their orthodontist’s advice to ensure the best results.

What is the cost of orthodontic treatment for my child?

The cost of orthodontic treatment may vary according to the ideal treatment option for your child. The only way to determine the specific costs of the treatment is to have a consultation, where a detailed quotation will be provided based on the assessment of the relevant diagnostic information.

We offer interest-free payment plans to make our orthodontic treatments affordable.

Do you have more than one child requiring orthodontic treatment? If so, we offer discounts when two or more family members undergo treatment with us. This means there’s less of a financial burden on you all the while ensuring your children receive the best treatment possible.

If you have any further questions regarding our payment plans or would like to book a consultation, please contact iSmile Orthodontics today.
