publishing industry as
both a designer and
illustrator for I 0 years .
He was also a judge in the
1997 APA design awards .
• Colin Rowan
is a graphic designer
at the Powerhosue
Museum . He is also the
winner of the 1993 Joyce
Nicholson award for the
best designed book of
the year. Colin lectures
in design at the Sydney
Institute of Technology
and has been a judge
and chair on previous
APA design awards .
Julie G ibbs
is Executive Publisher
at Penguin Books where she
has published a wide ranging
list of books for the last
5 years. Her authors include
Stephanie Alexander,
Stephanie Dowrick,
Georgia Blain, Kaz Cooke
and Paul Bangay. She began
her publishing career as
a bookseller and then
as a sales representative
and so developed a
commercial sense of
the elements of successful
book design at the coalface.
Mark Macleod
is the publisher of his own
imprint at Hodder Headline
Australia. He spent 9 years
as children 's publishing
director at Random House.
He is the publisher of the
1998 Children's Picture Book
of the Year "The Two Bullies",
and the publisher of "Way
Home", the first Australian
book to win the Kate
Greenaway Medal.
Richard Tardiff
is the publisher of
MacquarieNet, a major
education reference
web-site . He was for
a number of years the
publisher of the Macquarie
range of dictionary
products, and moved on
to develop the electronic
publishing component
of the Macquarie brand.
Richard has been involved
in online commercial
publishing for many years
now, and firmly expects
to make some money
some day.
James Fraser
has been in the book
industry for thirty years ,
fourteen of those as
Publishing Director of
Pan Macmillan Australia .

Jeremy Fisher
is General Manager
of the Higher Education
Division of McGraw-Hill.
He has been in the
publishing industry for
over 20 years, with
editorial, publishing and
sales experience . He has
postgraduate qualifications
in design from the
University of Technology,
Sydney where he is also
reading for his Doctorate
in Creative Arts. He has
written and had published
numerous works, and his
children's novel "Perfect
Timing" is still in print
(Pascal Press) .
JUDGES REPORT
M any thanks to the judges who were all very enthusiastic , embarking on many rounds
of lively debate . They were, Jeremy Fisher (McGraw-Hill) , James Fraser (Pan
Macmillan) , Julie Gibbs (Penguin} , Russell Jeffreys (HarperCollins) Mar k Macleod (Hodder
Headline) , Richard Tardiff (Macquarie Online), Colin Rowan (Powerhouse Museum) . This ,
years judging of the awards was both pleasurable and surprising for all of the judges who
participated. Pleasu rable to see some categories that have been rather lacklustre in years
past come to the fore with some exciting design development. Surprising in some
categories to see that what one would have expected to see a huge showing of the cream
of design, looked samey and uninspired . The vogue for soft images with elegant type feels
as though it has been around for a long time now with the cu r rent crop looking somewhat
diluted in impact from the originals that appeared several years ago.
It was clear quite early in the proceedings that the illustrated books were go ing to be
dominated by the large number of glamorous cookbooks in entry this year, and for that
reason , it was decided by the judges to create a separate category for this increasingly
popular area of publishing. Thanks to our newest sponsor, South China Printing.
Congratulations to the winner of the Joyce Thorpe Nicholson Award for the best designed
book of the year- Dean Lahn - for his innovative design handled with a great concern for
the craft and production of graphic design ; congratulations also to Wakefield Press for
taking a ri sk in publishing something unexpected and delightful.
