Waukesha Choral Union can trace its roots as Waukesha’s premier choral society back to 1949 at Carroll University. Over the years, under various names and outstanding artistic directors, WCU has developed a reputation for excellent choral music performances in SE Wisconsin. Adhering to our educational mission we have collaborated with Carroll University choirs, with music groups from Waukesha South, Waukesha North, Kettle Moraine, Muskego, and Hartford Union High Schools, and with the Waukesha Children’s Chorus. We’re proud to have shared the stage with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, the Milwaukee Choristers, and Bel Canto Chorus. We’ve been featured on WISN-TVs Season to Celebrate program. And in 2016 we achieved our dream of singing the National Anthem at Miller Park. Our potential is endless!

MISS ION

The Waukesha Choral Union will challenge, enrich, and engage its singing members, audiences, and community through the pursuit of excellence and a variety of programming. The WCU mission includes expansion of the effectiveness of its educational efforts throughout Waukesha County through collaboration with schools, area performing artists and community arts organizations.

ABOUT THE ARTISTIC D IRECTOR

FROM THE ARTISTIC D IRECTOR

Michael Chapel, Artistic Director of the Waukesha Choral Union, is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee with a Bachelor of

Fine Arts in Music and a Master’s Degree in Music Education – with an emphasis on choral conducting. He is the director of choral activities and musical theatre at Brown Deer Middle/High School and he is the fine arts facilities and scheduling coordinator for the School District

of Brown Deer. Additionally, Mr. Chapel is the choir director and lead service accompanist at St. Peter’s United Church of Christ in Saukville, WI.

Michael has served as an adjudicator since 2001 at concert and solo-ensemble festivals sponsored by the Wisconsin School Music Association. He is currently the Choir Coordinator for the WSMA Middle-Level State Honors Project.

Welcome to our presentation of “Carols Old and New.” The Waukesha Choral Union is thrilled to present our annual holiday concert(s) at First United Methodist Church in Waukesha and at St. Catherine of Alexandria in Oconomowoc. We are very grateful for the use of these sanctuaries for our performances.

For many, the Christmas season has not really begun until it is filled with the music of the holiday season. The music provides, in varied settings/arrangements, joyous, festive, warm or reflective moods to which we enjoy returning year after year. This year’s program will feature carols both old and new. Some you will know, others may be familiar and some will likely be new – but hopefully all will fill you with the joys of the music of the season. And we definitely expect to hear your voices during the “sing-a-longs.”

Our season-long theme “From the Heart, For the Soul” will continue in March, as we are joined by Jubilate Chorale and community singers, as well as chamber orchestra for a performance of Brahms’ “Ein Deutsches Requiem” on Sunday, March 12, 2017. We will close our season May 6, 2017 with ‘Songs of the Night,’ which will feature a variety of songs related to, or using the word ‘Night’ as part of the title (or story). Both of our spring concert events will be on the Carroll University campus.

We wish you and your family a healthy and happy holiday season. Thank you for your continuing support of the arts in your community. We cannot do what we do without you and your generous patronage. A Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all!

PROGR A M c o n t.

In dulci jubilo based on a 16th Century German tunearranged by Robert Pearsall

This piece was originally sung in processions that took place on Christmas-eve and is said to be “a very ancient Roman Catholic melody that Martin Luther retained in the Protestant service.” This arrangement translates the original German into English while retaining the Latin text in an effort to “preserve the simplicity of the original” and was edited and adapted by Reginald Jacques. (notes by Robert L. Pearsall)

Blow, Blow Thou Winter Winter John Rutter(from “When Icicles Hang”)

When Icicles Hang is a cycle of choral settings that was commissioned by Russell Burgess and the Wandsworth School Choir with funds provided by the Arts Council of Great Britain. First performed in London in 1973, all of the texts in the cycle are from 15th-16th century England. “Blow, Blow Thou Winter Wind” is based on the words of William Shakespeare, from As You Like It.

Dadme albricias, hijos d’Eva Anonymous (1556) Riu, Riu, Chiu edited by Noah Greenberg

(from “Three Spanish Christmas Carols of the Sixteenth Century” )These two Spanish Carols are taken from a collection of “Villancicos de duersos Autores” that was published in Venice during the sixteenth century. The edition that we are performing from is based on the version that appears in Cancionero De Upsala which was edited by Jesus Bal y Gay.

Lost in the Night Finnish Folk Tunearr. Kyle Haugen

According to the St. Olaf College Songbook, the text of this folk tune is from a “translation of a Norwegian rendering of a Finnish Song,” by Olav Lee, 1929. Renowned composer/arranger F. Melius Christianson first created a divisi-choir arrangement of the tune for his groups in the early 1930’s. This composition stays true to that original, with a reduction in the number of voice parts used but not in the emotion of / within the piece.

Carol of the Bells (Ukranian Carol) Mykola Leontovicharr. Peter J. Wilhousky

Originally a Ukranian New Year’s Carol, Shchedryk (Wealth) was written by Leontovich, and it soon found a place in the repertoire of the Ukranian Republican ‘A Cappella Choir’ (1919). The chorus embarked on a goodwill tour of Europe that later came to North America, where Peter Wilhousky first heard the carol. He then wrote original lyrics and arranged the music into this American Christmas masterpiece.

In the Bleak Midwinter Gustav Holstarr. Alice Parker

“In the Bleak Midwinter” was written by English poet Christina Rossetti for inclusion in her collection Poetical Works, where it was indicated to have been written before 1872. This text then gained great popularity when it was paired with “Cranham” in The English Hymnal, in 1906. Written by Holst, “Cranham” was composed specifically for this text.

CAROLS OLD and NEWFriday, December 9, 2016 – 7:30 PM

**The First Nowell <sing-along> English traditional carolarr. John Stainer

This is a traditional English carol that is likely from the 16th or 17th century, but possibly dates back as far as the early 1200s. This combination of tune and lyrics first appeared in the early 1800s, in William Sandys’ collection: Christmas Carols Ancient and Modern.

The first Nowell the Angel did say, Was to certain poor Shepherds in fields as they lay; In fields where they lay keeping their sheep, On a cold winter’s night that was so deep.

Chorus

Nowell, nowell, nowell, nowell. Born is the King of Israel. They looked up and saw a star, Shining in the East, beyond them far,

And to the earth it gave great light, And so it continued, both day and night. (Chorus)

This star drew nigh to the northwest, O’er Bethlehem it took its rest,And there it did both stop and stay, Right over the place where Jesus lay.

(Chorus)

Ding Dong Merrily on High based on a 16th century French tune arranged by Glenn Poore

Though the composer of “Ding Dong Merrily on High” is unknown, the tune was not a carol (or even a tune of the Christmas season). Though based on a French tune, the original text was written in Latin. The current version retains the Latin “Gloria” in addition to the English text that we are familiar with.

Glow Eric Whitacre text by Edward Esch

Walt Disney World’s “World of Color: Winter Dreams” at Disney California Adventure Park features 20+ minutes of colored mist streams, exploding fountains and dancing lights. “Glow” was written to be part of the musical background to this attraction by the award-winning composer Eric Whitacre (with a piano accompaniment arranged by Lisa Edwards).

**Angels We Have Heard on High <sing-along> Traditional French CarolThis is a traditional French carol (“Les Anges dans Nos Campagnes”) that originated as early as the eighteenth century,  The original hymn was arranged in a dialogue form alternating between the shepherds and the women of Bethlehem. It is another of many “macaronic” (two language) carols.

Angels We Have Heard On High, Sweetly swinging o’er the plains And the mountains in reply, Echo back their joyous strains.

Chorus Gloria in excelsis Deo, Gloria in excelsis Deo.

Shepherds why this jubilee, Why your joyous strains prolong? Say what may the tidings be, Which inspire your heavenly song?

(Chorus)

Come to Bethlehem and see, Him Whose birth the angels sing; Come, adore on bended knee,Christ the Lord, the newborn King.

(Chorus)

See within in a manger laid, Jesus Lord of heav’n and earth Mary, Joseph lend your aid, With us sing our Savior’s birth.

PROGR A M c o n t.

Lo how a Rose / The Rose arr. Craig Hella JohnsonThis arrangement was created for a performance that explored the rich territory found on the borders between what we have traditionally called sacred and secular music and between classical and popular music. This piece features the timeless song “The Rose” written by Amanda McBroom along with the traditional “Lo How a Rose” chorale tune. (notes by Craig Hella Johnson)

INTERMISSION

**Joy to the World <sing-along> George Frideric Handel (1685-1759)arr. Lowell Mason

“Joy to the World” was not written to be a Christmas song; rather it was an Isaac Watts text (1719) that paraphrased Psalm 98. It does however maintain a very strong connection to the season of Advent and continues to be performed annually at many celebrations of the season.

Joy to the world! the Lord is come; Let earth receive her King; Let every heart prepare him room,

And heaven and nature sing, And heaven and nature sing, And heaven, and heaven, and nature sing.

Joy to the earth! the Savior reigns; Let men their songs employ; While fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains

Repeat the sounding joy, Repeat the sounding joy, Repeat, repeat the sounding joy

He rules the world with truth and grace, And makes the nations prove The glories of His righteousness,

And wonders of His love, And wonders of His love, And wonders, wonders, of His love.

Gloria Jeffrey RickardGloria in excelsis Deo (Glory in the highest to God)

Rickard’s “Gloria” was composed in memory of J. William Jones, the founder of the University of Redlands Choir. It features the traditional Latin text, but has a several musical surprises and challenges within it, including many mixed-meter rhythms.

Thank you for your patronage. Please consider attending our two remaining

concert this season:

Christmas Day Choral Fantasy on Old Carolsarr. Gustav Holst

This Gustav Holst arrangement contains three Carols: Good Christian Men, Rejoice, God Rest ye Merry Gentlemen and Come, ye lofty, come, ye lowly, (Old Breton Melody) with a little The First Nowell thrown in for good measure.

**Silent Night <sing-along> Franz Gruber (1787-1863)arr. John Rutter

In 1818, Franz Gruber composed a melody to fit the Josef Mohr poem “Stille nacht, heilige nacht.” “Silent Night! Holy Night!” had its world premiere on Christmas Eve in the St. Nicholas church of Oberndorf near Salzburg, performed by both Gruber and Mohr.

Silent night, holy night, All is calm, all is bright. Round yon Virgin, mother and Child, Holy infant, so tender and mild;

Sleep in heavenly peace, sleep in heavenly peace

Silent night, holy night, Shepherds first saw the sight: Glories stream from heaven a-far, Heav’nly hosts sing alleluia,

Christ the Savior is born, Christ the Savior is born

Silent night, holy night, Son of God, love’s pure light; Radiance beams from thy holy face, With dawn of redeeming grace,

Jesus, Lord, at thy birth, Jesus, Lord, at thy birth

Various Themes on “Fa - La - La” arr. Chuck BridwellIf the words “Fa – La – La” are sung in a musical composition, there is a pretty good chance it is either a Madrigal or a Christmas tune. In this arrangement, Chuck Bridwell chooses well-known sections of four different classics and alternates those between verses of the traditional carol “Deck the Hall.”
