Sport at St Philip’s is such a highlight for many students. Each term we produce the Saints Sports Special
to recognise the students who have represented the College in any
sporting arena throughout the term. This term we have also recognised
a number of students who have excelled at a high level during the
year both as a school pathway or an external achievement. We have so
many talented students at St Philip’s and it is wonderful to recognise their efforts. There will be a formal Middle
School and Senior School Sports Presentation in Term 4 to recognise
student achievements throughout the year.

Car Parking and Safety Issues
Car Parking – Let’s be Great Neighbours
We have had a couple of complaints recently about bins being moved so that people can
park on Bridge Street which has led to one of our neighbour’s having no bin pick up for 2 weeks. This is understandably annoying! We have also been notified of cars parked over driveways. Please take care when parking
so that our reputation for being part of the Waratah community is strong and healthy.
Our neighbours will call the police if this con-tinues to happen.
Harriet St Car Park
Parents please stay in your car when you
come into the Kiss and Run lane in the Har-riet Street Car Park. Our staff and Senior
Students are there to help students alight, get their bags and keep everything running safely and smoothly. When parents also get out of the car, the process slows consider-ably meaning that traffic gets banked up
onto Harriet Street – exactly what we want to avoid.
Let’s build community by serving each
other well.

This term has been very exciting for our Music Faculty with the wonderful addition of a new Casio Privia Keyboard. St Philip’s Christian College won the prize after one of our music teachers entered our school into a draw whilst attending a workshop in Sydney : A Day of Technology in Music Education. The keyboard is such a blessing to our Music Department and we are grateful to both Casio and Music Ed Net for our wonderful prize. Our SPCC Wind Orchestra are also well into rehearsals for their big upcoming concert, “Music from the Movies”. Our Wind Orchestra involves students from Years 7-12, and the concert will be a fantastic evening of famous movie compositions and audio and visual presentations. Who knows, you may even be able to settle in with some movie popcorn and snacks! See below for further details. All the very best to our Year 12 Music Students, who this coming Thursday will be presenting their performances as part of their HSC Performance Exam. Please keep these amazing students in your thoughts and prayers. Mr Laundon, Mrs Connett and Mrs Wickens

On 9th September, Year 6 had a visit from the Mayfield West Fire and Rescue Department. Bevan, Mark, Ed, and Jamey told Year 6 about the dangers of bushfires and how they can affect the local ecosystems, how to prevent bushfires and what to do if people are caught in one. They shared some funny and serious stories about their job and certain things they have had to deal with on a daily basis. Year 6 then went over to the Sports Centre car park to see the tools that they use to fight fires or help those who are affected by accidents or fires. The students had the opportunity to use the firehose that are used to fight fires. The firefighters let Year 6 hold things like “the jaws of life” and climb into their fire truck. Over all Year 6 had a great time enjoying the company of the Mayfield West Fire and Rescue Department, and special thanks to Bevan, Mark, Ed and Jamey.

YEAR 6 FIRE AND RESCUE NSW VISIT
In Week 7, St Philip’s hosted 40 students from 4 schools for the second half of the Knights Interschool Chess Competition. Our Stage 3 Team won the first meeting with 18 out of a possible 20 points and were looking forward to hopefully continue this winning streak.
Congratulations to the team as they won with 32 points out of a possible 36 points. A very dominant performance! The Stage 3 Team are now off to the Knights Finals Day at the PCYC on the 6th November.
Well done to the following students: Jake Dahl, Akash Enjeti, Anuj Goel and Corren Ingersole. Thank you to Risahbh Shah for filling in on Board 4 during the last four games and to Ben Pickford for his sportsmanship toward Newcastle Grammar School by filling in, as they were a competitor down.
Also, a special thanks to Jeff Jackson for organising the setup of the Theatre Foyer for the Competition.
Best of luck in the next phase, gentlemen.

On Monday 26th August, Year 3 went to the Tilligerry Habitat, on the beautiful shores of Tanilba Bay, for an excursion to learn about Koalas. First, we split into groups. One group went on a nature walk. On the board walk, we looked for birds and plants and tried to spot koalas. How do you find out where a koala has been? The evidence sits at the base of some of the gum trees! If the koala droppings are under the tree, a koala has been there. In the Nursery, we planted a seed and learnt about banksia seeds. They need to be baked in an oven to open the pod and for the seeds to fall out and grow. We also saw flannel flowers and Scribbly Gum trees.
In the Visitors Centre, we learnt many interesting facts about koalas. Koalas have pupils shaped like a cat. They are nocturnal animals. Male koalas have a scent gland on their chest that they rub against the tree to mark their territory. There are a lot of different types of gum trees, but koalas will only eat some of them. At the Tilligerry Habitat, the koala’s favourite tree is the Swamp Mahogany and the Red Gum. Koalas have two thumbs to help them when they are climbing. One of the main reasons for our excursion was to learn about the threats to the koalas. There are three main threats to the koala population. They are dogs, people cutting down trees and cars running over koalas. We can take action by planting new gum trees, making koala crossings and controlling our dogs.
It is important to try to help koalas so they will be alive for future generations to enjoy.
YEAR 3 EXCURSION
If you have an interest in volleyball and have considered developing this outside of school, there is an opportunity for you to pursue this in the Newcastle area. Social competitions are now running at various locations and these have been growing in popularity. A focused training program will lead towards an U15’s and U’17’s girls squad. No prior experience is needed; just a willingness to get in and have a go! Following on from these training programs, you may wish to continue to train and play socially, or compete at a higher level in the Newcastle Rep teams. There are a few students who took up this opportunity last year and they loved it. Please email Mr Ponsen [email protected] for information with contact details, as well as training times, locations, etc.
