ALF Lighthouse Gala — What a Kick-off to the 2011 Season!

As with each new season, ALF volunteers are once again stepping forward with a renewed passion, energy and dedication in support of the organization’s mission. They are people just like YOU who not only contribute over 25,000 volunteer hours each year, but also possess some of the most unique and effective skill-sets that any group could possibly ask for.

What finer way to honor some of ALF’s stellar volunteers, and kick-off a new season at the same time, than during the 2011 Annual Lighthouse Gala, which brought a great cross-section of our organization together for a night of memorable camaraderie and fun.

The event, which occurred on Saturday, April 16th, was held in the Grand Ballroom at the Sheraton Harborside Hotel in Portsmouth, New Hampshire and provided attendees with an opportunity to celebrate 2010 as a milestone year while also commemorating the contributions of a number of individuals who helped play an important role in the team success ALF continues to enjoy.

A special highlight of the evening was the entertainment by Gary Sredzienski, who just over six weeks ago, swam in the frigid waters of New Hampshire and Maine to help ALF’s lighthouse preservation mission. Gary’s spirited performance featured an array of musical talent and humor, all of which delighted the crowd throughout the show.

In addition, ALF Board President Jeremy D’Entremont presided over three award presentations that included the organization’s “Keeper of the Light Award,” the “Distinguished Lighthouse Community Service Award” and the “President’s Award” each honoring well-deserving recipients.

As we get ready to launch the 2011 restoration and maintenance season – with projects already lined up at lighthouses such as Wood Island, Pomham Rocks, Rockland Breakwater, Race Point, Avery Point, New London Ledge and others. I hope you enjoy this review of ALF’s 2011 Annual Lighthouse Gala.

It is thanks to our talented and selfless volunteers that the American Lighthouse Foundation is able to shine bright as the nation’s leader in saving historic lighthouses — a proud distinction that could not be possible without people like YOU!

Carry on my fellow Keepers of the Lights!

Gary Sredzienski IntroductionPresented by ALF President Jeremy D’Entremont

Gary Sredzienski has been playing accordion for over 40 years. He is an exceptionally versatile musician whose repertoire encompasses the Polish music of his ancestry as well as music from a wide range of world and American traditions. He also plays 1960s surf rock, traditional ethnic and original compositions with his Portsmouth based group, the Serfs.

In May 2000 he represented New Hampshire in a performance at the Kennedy Center Millennium Stage in Washington DC. He’s also represented New Hampshire in a number of folk festivals. His compositions and music have been featured in a number of feature films and television soundtracks. Since 1987, Gary has hosted a weekly radio show, “Polka Party,” on WUNH-FM.

He’s also earned the nickname “Creekman” because of his longtime passion for swimming in local waterways 12 months of the year. In fact, the NH Charitable Foundation gave Gary a grant to write, produce, and perform a play entitled “Creekman: The Adventures of the Accordion Playing Merman.”

This past February 26, he swam four miles in the Piscataqua River to raise over $9000 for the American Lighthouse Foundation and Friends of Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouses. For those of you who weren’t able to be in this area for the Swim for the Lights, we’re going to show a short video right now that recaps the event.

2011 ALF Distinguished Lighthouse Community Service AwardPresented by ALF President Jeremy D’Entremont

The American Lighthouse Foundation’s “Distinguished Lighthouse Community Service Award” honors one individual each year who has contributed in a significant fashion to the mission of the American Lighthouse Foundation as a professional or in a volunteer capacity.

For his incredible commitment during the “Swim for the Lights” event, and also in recognition for everything Gary does for the community at large, the American Lighthouse Foundation is proud to present Gary Sredzienski with the organization’s Distinguished Lighthouse Community Service Award for 2011.

Let me tell you about a few things Gary has done besides the Swim for the Lights.

In 2008 Gary raised over $17,000 for the Krempels Brain Injury Foundation by being the first in winter to swim six miles from Portsmouth to the Isles of Shoals. He also swam the Piscataqua River for Seacoast Hospice, and he raised $16,000 for Share Our Strength by swimming five and a half miles of the York River in December 2009.

Gary presents music education programs in schools on a regular basis. In 1990, he was sponsored to undertake a national tour, performing for 93 nursing homes in 15 states over a five-week period. He received a “Point of Light” award for that effort. Gary continues to perform at nursing homes, and he also offers programs for mentally and physically disabled students.

Let’s give Gary Sredzienski a warm round of applause — the recipient of the 2011 ALF Distinguished Community Service Award!

2011 ALF Len Hadley Volunteer Awards

American Lighthouse Foundation’s “Len Hadley Volunteerism Award” was named after Len Hadley, one of the original co-founders of the organization in 1994. Len possessed a wonderful personality and ability to connect with others, and was a stellar volunteer for a number of ALF projects throughout the years.

The vital pillar supporting the American Lighthouse Foundation’s success in preservation, education and public access programs over the past seventeen years has undeniably been the dedication of ALF volunteers such as Len Hadley.

When Len sadly passed away in October 2000, the ALF board of directors honored his uncommon dedication to volunteerism by naming an award after him that would recognize other outstanding ALF volunteers for the same passion, selflessness and commitment to lighthouse preservation for which Len stood for.

Avery Point Lighthouse SocietyMary Jane Michaels

Avery Point Lighthouse Society began its journey toward renovation of the Avery Point Lighthouse in the year 2000. Prior to that, three gentlemen had worked to convince the powers at the University of Connecticut that it should invest in the rehabilitation of the light tower - but the University was not into lighthouses. Instead, the University was ready to tear it down.

Fast forward to the summer of 2003 when Mary Jane Michaels called APLS out of the blue one day asking if she could become a part of the group. No one knew her; she lived and worked an hour away in Rocky Hill and Hartford, and it is not known how she learned about APLS — but the group was certainly happy to have her help.

Mary Jane is fondly known by her friends as “MJ”. At first this was a little confusing as we already had an MJ on the APLS team. Eventually everyone called her Mary Jane. She was put to work at various fundraisers staffing tables of wares, and helping to pack and unpack APLS merchandise. She also came to meetings and was happy to provide fresh ideas and input to the group.

More recently she made the trek to Groton to help decorate the lighthouse for the holidays (even though the wind was whipping and the temperatures were miserably low). Mary Jane is one of the long-term faithful, who can be relied on to be there. She has worked in the background, quietly assisting whenever possible.

There is a reason that APLS felt it was important to give this award to MJ this year. Mary Jane is planning a move to Washington State in the not too distant future when she retires, so this may be her last hurrah with the Avery Point Lighthouse Society.

APLS will make sure she has contact information for some of their other transplants out there - Elinor DeWire, Bob Tellier and Jeannie Panciera - so we don’t think that this will be the end of her lighthousing. She also has grandchildren there to teach about the historical significance of lighthouses. We send her off with many thanks for her help and persistence through the last 8 years.

We honor Mary Jane Michaels as the Avery Point Lighthouse Society’s 2011 Len Hadley Volunteerism Award recipient.

Cape Cod ChapterGary Childs

Gary Childs came along as most volunteers do — hearing of Race Point Lighthouse’s needs, and holding in his heart a love of lighthouses, and all that comes with them.

What Gary had to give was more than any organization dependent on volunteer support could wish for. He started by blending his successful background as a paramedic and paramedic instructor with the chapter’s need for CPR and Automated External Diffibulator instruction. It was a need that was showcased at the chapter’s 2009 Keeper Orientation.

Undaunted, Gary jumped in, working right off the bat with board member-volunteers for this important event. Race Point Keepers, experienced and new, were soon taught cutting-edge safety procedures — and all with direct, hands-on experience. That’s what Gary does – he helps in big ways.

Following the Keeper Orientation, he soon joined the dedicated team of Light Station maintenance volunteers, offering his expertise in plumbing, electricity and carpentry. His contributions are always big. For the past two years, he has spearheaded the massive annual spring clean-up event and readying the Keeper’s House and the Whistle House for another overnight guest season.

With Gary, there is never a question of “Can you help?” There is always his enthusiastic reply: “I’ll be there!” Even if a scheduled Keeper is suddenly detained and unable to host guests,

he is there, ready to step in and cover. Gary is always willing, passionate and committed to the needs of Race Point.

So, on this special evening of celebration, we thank you, Gary: For how tirelessly you give of your time and talents, and for a mutual necessity that continues to produce exceptional results.

We honor Gary Childs as the Cape Cod Chapter’s 2011 ALF Len Hadley Volunteerism Award recipient.

Friends of Little River LighthouseTerry Rowden

Terry Rowden has been involved with the restoration of Little River Lighthouse since 2001. In the past couple of years Terry has taken over all general maintenance duties at the lighthouse, which has included repairing electrical and plumbing problems, mowing the lawn, making repairs to the tractor, performing general maintenance on the boats and ferrying people back and forth to the island. More importantly he has made numerous repairs to the floating dock as well as coordinating the dock’s installation and removal each season.

Terry recently built a new cover for the cistern that replicates the one that used to be at the lighthouse many years ago. Terry has strong ties to the lighthouse having been stationed there as a Coast Guard keeper from 1968 to 1970. While stationed at Little River Lighthouse, he met and married a local girl, Cynthia Cates, and they stayed in the community to raise their family.

Terry has always been available to help with any projects at the lighthouse, including giving tower tours during Open Houses and recounting his memories of life at the lighthouse to visitors to the island.

We honor Terry Rowden as the Friends of Little River Lighthouse’s 2011 Len Hadley Volunteerism Award recipient.

Friends of Pemaquid Point LighthouseMarty Welt

The Friends of Pemaquid Point Lighthouse wish to honor all of their volunteer docents this year by recognizing Marty Welt, their chapter President. It requires the dedication of many volunteers to keep the Pemaquid Point tower open from May to October, and it takes a major commitment to be responsible for coordinating that schedule.

Marty has been managing the calendar for Pemaquid’s docents each season since 2005. Although some years have been easier than others, it is because of the reliable volunteers that this tower can be open to the public seven days a week for almost seven months a year.

Last year the chapter had over 33,000 visitors climb up the tower stairs! So, on behalf of each and every Pemaquid volunteer, and because of his continued diligence in setting the schedule, we thank him.

We honor Marty Welt as the Friends of Pemaquid Point Lighthouse’s 2011 Len Hadley Volunteerism Award recipient.

Friends of Pomham Rocks LighthouseMichael Tripp

Mike Tripp joined the Friends of Pomham Rocks Lighthouse board shortly after the chapter’s founding when there was a need for a qualified professional accountant to serve as chapter treasurer. Mike has steadily filled this volunteer roll to the present.

Mike is a member of the LaSalle Academy Hall of Fame and a 1975 Honors Graduate of Bryant College in North Smithfield, Rhode Island. Mike is presently principal of the Michael W. Tripp CPA firm located in East Providence, Rhode Island.

Mike Tripp is married to wife, Ella, has two daughters and along with his family is an avid recreational boater on the waters of Narragansett Bay and Rhode Island Sound.

Mike has had and has numerous professional, civic and fraternal affiliations and is well versed with the business world.

It is worthy to note that Mike served his country with honorable distinction as a United States Marine during the Vietnam War as a decorated and experienced veteran with hazardous duty aboard combat helicopters. Mike remains a patriotic champion with fulfilling the special needs of our military veterans.

We honor Mike Tripp as the Friends of Pomham Rocks Lighthouse’s recipient of the 2011 Len Hadley Volunteerism Award recipient.

Friends of Portsmouth Harbor LighthouseRon Kolek

The Friends of Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse’s award winner this year is best known for his work in the paranormal field. He is the founder and lead investigator for New England Ghost Project. He hosts the internet radio talk show “Ghost Chronicles” and he is the author of two popular books on the paranormal. His exploits have been documented in many newspaper, television, radio, and magazine articles, and he is internationally known with features in the U.K., Germany, and China.

Ron Kolek is being honored today for his role in developing and running some very successful fundraising events at Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse. His “haunted tours” and a public “Ghost Hunt” in 2010 raised nearly $5000 for the chapter. All of these events were sold out, and the feedback from participants was uniformly positive.

The key to Ron’s events is audience participation. Whether you believe or not, Ron has a way of making the paranormal fun. He once said, “You share what you find and let people decide what they think. Go in with an open mind, and you’ll learn more than you would have with a closed mind.”

Ron also serves on the board of directors for the Friends of Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse, and has volunteered at other events. We honor Ron Kolek as the Friends of Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse’s 2011 Len Hadley Volunteerism Award recipient.

Friends of Rockland Breakwater LighthouseRockland Breakwater – Wally Towne

2010 was Wally Towne first year at Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse, volunteering more than a quarter of the number of hours the lighthouse was open to visitors during the season, and 40% of the individual days it was open, walking a total of 40 miles to fulfill his docent duties.

Beyond the numbers, Wally was not just willing, but happy to volunteer and on a number of occasions filled in at the last minute or switched his scheduled hours to accommodate the choices of other volunteers. For the majority of his volunteer time Wally took on tower duty, which meant being isolated from his fellow volunteers, but in the thick of activity when it came to greeting and conversing with visitors to the lighthouse.

Wally also volunteered the use of his boat to transport a technician and his equipment to do work out at the lighthouse.

We honor Wally Towne as a Friends of Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse 2011 Len Hadley Volunteerism Award recipient.

In addition to Rockland Breakwater Light, the Friends of Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse also have Owls Head Light under their care and coordinate public access during the summer months.

Marla Rogers has been volunteering at Owls Head Lighthouse since it was opened to visitors two years ago.

In 2010, Marla volunteered for half of the number of days the lighthouse was open, and was always willing to take extra shifts and change her times around to suit others. But that’s only telling a part of the story. Having grown up in and around lighthouses — Owls Head in particular — Marla knows a thing or two about lighthouses, and she was more than happy to entertain visitors with the colorful tales of her experiences while living at lighthouses. She has even taken her “show” on the road, accepting requests from local community organizations to speak to their members as well as to the public about her experiences growing up at lighthouses.

We honor Marla Rogers as a Friends of Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse 2011 Len Hadley Volunteerism Award recipient.

Friends of Wood Island LighthouseKyle Noble

With the exception of the recipient’s own vote, the vote was unanimous in favor of Kyle Noble in recognition of his many contributions over the past year, most notably, for serving as our interface with the City of Biddeford in obtaining the required environmental approval required as a condition of Wood Island’s share of the HUD grant funds as well as his extensive efforts in the evaluation of the lighthouse and oversight of the chapter’s architects on all aspects of the development of drawings and specs for submission to the State and the USCG.

Kyle brought to both efforts a unique capacity that the chapter could not duplicate otherwise, namely, his knowledge of the workings of City Hall and his relationships with people who inhabit the place, and, of course, his general knowledge and expertise in building restoration, coupled with his particular knowledge of the Lighthouse itself. Kyle devoted untold hours to both and in the process became FOWIL’s resident Sea Fowl Ornithologist.

Kyle has long been a contributor to the work of FOWIL and has re-doubled those contributions since becoming a member of their Executive Committee. So, we know you will all join the chapter in extending first, their thanks, and second, their congratulations.

We honor Kyle Noble as the Friends of Wood Island Lighthouse’s 2011 Len Hadley Volunteerism Award Recipient.

New England Lighthouse LoversRon Bandock and Mike Boucher

Between the two, NELL’s recipients have over 18 years of volunteering for lighthouse preservation. Combined, they have been to over 2,000 lighthouses, logging countless miles both driving and flying to accomplish this.

Ron Bandock and Mike Boucher have broken the mold for planning cruises and taking NELL members to the “strange lands” outside of New England’s borders. It started with a cruise to view the lighthouses of NY Harbor, including Jeffrey’s Hook and the Four Waterfalls of New York Harbor, and up to the Seaway Trail in Alexandria NY.

Ron and Mike worked well together. Planning the events for NELL, they did everything they could to ensure everyone had a good time at our events. Ron’s term as NELL’s Vice President

ended in the fall of 2010 but he continues his volunteer work as their Nominating Committee Chair. Early on, Mike added a bonus to the trips, putting together a booklet of all the lighthouses and their history that would be seen on each cruise. Mike continues to work with NELL’s new Vice President on events and has expanded his volunteer work to be co-editor of their newsletter, the “Beacon”.

We honor Ron Bandock and Mike Boucher as the New England Lighthouse Lovers 2011 Len Hadley Volunteerism Award recipient.

New London Ledge Lighthouse FoundationF. Russell Smith, II

Russell Smith has been a versatile and dedicated volunteer for the New London Ledge Lighthouse Foundation, especially over the past several years.

For the chapter’s Centennial Gala held in 2009, he spent several days at Ledge Light playing the part of “Ernie,” the keeper whose ghost is said to haunt the light, for a documentary film. His soulful portrayal of that tormented keeper created a powerful sequence in the film.

Russell serves as vice-president of the New London Ledge Lighthouse Foundation and has participated in ongoing restoration work projects. He has built installations for the soon to be opened Interpretive Center, and has a full spring of work scheduled to assure its completion. Russell has taken volunteers, architects, and others out to Ledge Light to do work, for photography and other lighthouse studies and projects.

Though he does not seek the spotlight, Russell’s volunteer work has shone brightly, like the beacon on Ledge Light. The chapter depends on him to help navigate their way through the many projects they have charted as they seek to save and preserve the New London Ledge Lighthouse.

We honor Russell Smith as the New London Ledge Lighthouse Foundation’s 2011 Len Hadley Volunteerism Award recipient.

Sandy Neck Lighthouse Restoration CommitteePaul DeVeau and Vivi (Avelino) Lopes

Paul DeVeau and Vivi Lopes were nominated by the Sandy Neck Lighthouse Restoration Committee for their contributions and support in replacing the optic in Sandy Neck Lighthouse.

Paul DeVeau, one of the chapter’s newest members, has been instrumental in the ongoing maintenance of the lantern room, spending considerable amounts of time in its maintenance and upkeep. In addition, Paul was instrumental in researching and evaluating the technical data as well as arranging for the acquisition of a new optic which effectively tripled the range of visibility of the light, which serves as a USCG Private Aid to Navigation.

Vivi (Avelino) Lopes, a long time Hyannis business man, has become an integral, valued and dedicated member of the committee. In addition to his help in maintaining the Lighthouse, Vivi has made substantial financial donations when funds were not otherwise available to allow the restoration efforts of the Lighthouse to continue, including the acquisition of the new, more powerful optic.

Both members are vigilante keepers of the Lighthouse giving much of their time and knowledge to the maintaining of the light. We honor Paul DeVeau and Vivi Lopes as the Sandy Neck Lighthouse Restoration Committee’s 2011 Len Hadley Volunteerism Award recipients.

2011 President’s AwardPresented by ALF President Jeremy D’Entremont

The American Lighthouse Foundation’s “President’s Award” is designed to honor individuals who have demonstrated exemplary leadership and commitment to the organization’s historic lighthouse preservation mission.

It’s my sincere honor to present the President’s award to Jim Walker. For more than 15 years, Jim has spearheaded the Cape Cod Chapter’s amazing restoration of the Race Point Lighthouse.

For those of you who don’t know, Race Point Lighthouse is about 2.5 miles from the heart of Provincetown, at the northwestern tip of Cape Cod. After the station was automated in the 1970s, the property fell into a state of disrepair. In 1995, the station was licensed to the American Lighthouse Foundation and the Cape Cod Chapter was launched under Jim’s leadership. Over the next three years, a remarkable restoration was completed, largely by volunteer labor. The keeper’s house was opened for overnight stays. More recently, the restored whistle house has also been opened for overnight stays.

Jim is a past recipient of the American Lighthouse Foundation’s “Keeper of the Light” award. In 2006, the Cape Cod Chapter honored him with a 10-year achievement award. Bill Jenkins of the Cape Cod Chapter said at the time:

“Jim Walker spearheaded an effort that was nothing short of spectacular. Slowly, step by painstaking step, Jim Walker and his volunteers breathed life into the entire compound. The vision — Jim’s vision — had become a remarkable accomplishment. Today, thousands of visitors and guests experience the miracle that is Race Point Lighthouse.”

While Walker admits that returning Race Point to a place of beauty has been a long process, it is such characteristics that keep him motivated. “At the end of the day with your feet up on the railing and a glass of wine,” he said. “It makes it all worthwhile.”

I’m proud to present the 2011 ALF President’s Award to Jim Walker.

2011 Keeper of the Light AwardPresented by ALF President Jeremy D’Entremont

The American Lighthouse Foundation’s “Keeper of the Light Award” is designed to honor those individuals in the national lighthouse community who have contributed in a significant manner to the preservation of America’s lighthouses and their rich heritage.

For his dedication and service to the mission of the Friends of Flying Santa over the past 20 years, we are pleased to present the American Lighthouse Foundation’s Keeper of the Light Award to Brian Tague.

Since he first became involved, Brian has tirelessly and selflessly involved himself in the Flying Santa program. He commits countless hours of volunteer time and effort to coordinate logistics, donations, and gift buying and wrapping. He goes to great lengths to match age and gender-appropriate gifts to all of the children who participate. The work takes place behind the scenes year-round, and accelerates to an incredible pace during the Christmas season.

In December 2010, three separate flights delivered gifts to more than 600 children of Coast Guard families. The flights, in private helicopters operated by volunteers who donate their time, stopped at 24 lighthouses and Coast Guard stations throughout New England. Brian also coordinates fundraising events for the Friends of Flying Santa.

We are very happy to present our Keeper of the Light Award to Brian Tague.

The mission of the American Lighthouse Foundation is to save and preserve our nation’s

historic light stations and their rich heritage.

This will be accomplished through the restoration, promotion and adaptive re-use of America’s historic light stations, as well as educational initiatives that foster the sustainable preservation of lighthouses and perpetuate the legacy of the men and women who have tended them.
