Challenging and Exciting times ahead...
Wish you and your loved ones a very Happy Diwali !
India is often referred to as a hiccup economy. Whenever
things seem to fall in place for the economy to grow in
double digits, something or the other derails the economy
– political turmoil, devaluation, lack of liquidity, sudden
emergence of non-performing assets – the list goes on.
However, notwithstanding the volatility, India continues to
chug along a decent pace of 7%+growth in GDP and is
brimming with opportunities. This is, in fact, the best time
to be in India and to be an Indian, because despite the
hiccups there is optimism and there are more
opportunities today than ever before.
However, every opportunity available is a Qualified
Opportunity. It can be availed only by those who are well-
prepared and agile.
For example: after the decades of Globalisation, we are
now entering an era of Protectionism. “Make in America”,
“Make in China”, “Make in India” are the new headlines. As a result, the global supply chains that were constructed in the last
years are getting disrupted. Additionally, the trade wars are causing huge forex volatility. In the changed scenario, we have to think
of Deep Localisation through import substitution – of raw materials, child parts and machine tools – to remain cost competitive.
Similarly, the tolerance level of customers towards any shortcoming in Quality is going down and as they get more exposure
through social media and television to what is happening in the world, they are not willing to accept anything short of world-class.
To meet this expectation of Zero Defect Quality or World Class Quality, we will have to reallocate capital and invest in Digital
Technology to fool proof our manufacturing systems. This may not directly meet our RoI or RoCE goals, but is an essential
investment to stay in business and benefit from the opportunity that the Indian market presents.
It is ironical that we continue to show People as an Expense in the Profit & Loss Statement and show Machine Tools, Plant &
Equipment as Assets while the only appreciating asset in a company is actually People. Only those companies who invest in
building a solid talent pipeline, and invest in the continuous development of people, will be able to deal with the hiccups caused
by frequently changing Government Regulations or Disruptive Technology or the increase in competition. It is for this reason that I
believe the huge opportunity that India offers is a Qualified Opportunity, available to only those who are prepared
to relook at passionate and well trained People as their key differentiator.
The Indian Army recruits ordinary personnel from our villages and small towns and builds soldiers
who are passionate and skilled, and ready to die for the country. This is done by building Trust
through fantastic training, discipline and exemplary leadership. If we could replicate the
example of the Indian Army, we too can create world-class enterprises and all the hiccups and
uncertainties in the economy and the market will no longer hold us back from becoming
more successful and more profitable.
