NEWS FROM PASTOR RON—

Summer blessings to all the saints in the Calvary family of faith! I hope and trust

that you all are enjoying the summertime so far.

As you are reading this, our mission team is in Zambia. Please continue to pray for

this mission team – that God would use them in mighty ways, beyond what they could do in their own

strength. The team returns on August 13, and we will want to give them a glad and warm welcome home! The

team will give their report on the weekend of August 30 and 31. I'm sure they will have much to share as Cal-

vary continues to deepen its relationship with the ministries in southern Africa. You won't want to miss their

report!

As we all look forward and consider new ministries for Calvary, I am desiring to explore the possibility of

resurrecting our Stephen Ministry. If you would be open to helping me with this, please let me know. Calvary

would need at least three trained Stephen Ministry leaders for this to be fruitful. A Stephen Ministry Leader's

Training course will be offered next February. Soon, I am hoping to gather together past Stephen Ministers

and others interested in this ministry to talk about how best to resume this important ministry.

Let me close with these great words from Philippians 1:3-6, “I thank my God every time I remember you. In

all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first

day until now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion

until the day of Christ Jesus.”

Blessings,

YOUTH GROUP MEETINGS— Summer Schedule—Grades 6-12 meet every Thursday from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Youth Director: Ben Auger Phone: (360)825-3820 E-mail: [email protected] page 3

DIDYOU KNOW…

… that 46% of our youth group teens live

with both biological parents?

CALVARY YOUTH MINISTRIES UPDATE ALT-ernative Teaching Every time we do youth group, we break into small groups for discussion. We start each discussion with “highs and lows,” in which

students share the high points of their week and the low points. They love having the opportunity to share about their lives and be

heard and encouraged. We always take time to crack open a bible, find a few verses or paragraphs, read, and talk about them. Then

we close with prayer. That’s a typical model for bible study right? Well, yes and no….

Our youth ministry leaders use an ALT-ternative Teaching Method: Ask, Listen, Teach.

ASK – After we read a bible passage, we ask the students challenging questions. We know that the only way to get deep answers is to

ask deep questions. It’s also important that we ask without an agenda or without expecting a right answer. We really want to know

what our teenagers think and have to say and we want them to think critically. After a while, this creates an environment that is open

and where teens are free to share and won’t be judged if they’re wrong.

LISTEN – Rather than lecture them about what exactly to believe, we listen to what they think because students love to be heard and

we love for them to think critically. After the group leader has heard their thoughts, we compliment and validate them. We even vali-

date them when they’re wrong, which is hard, but saying things like “that’s a profound thought” or “thanks for your honesty” go a

long way. I’ve found that the more I listen to what teens have to say, the more they want to hear what I have to say. After minutes of

struggling to come up with answers, they’ll sometimes cry, “Stop stalling. Just tell us the right answer Ben!”

TEACH – This third step isn’t as simple as it appears. If we go straight to our lesson plan or agenda, then the students will think

we’ve heard nothing they’ve had to say. If I started my lesson by asking, “Who is Jesus?” and in my mind prepared to support Him

being God, but as my teens already affirmed the fact that Jesus is God and then began wrestling through the Trinity and Jesus being

fully man, my references to Jesus being God and having scripture passages to support that won’t resound well with my students.

Teachers need to be flexible, yet know their stuff. It’s harder to do than a academic-lecture teaching format, but ALT-ernative teach-

ing is more effective because it allows us to speak straight into their lives and address their doubts, worries, and information-gaps.

Next time you read the Gospels, watch how Jesus constantly uses the ALT-ernative teaching method with his disciples and followers.

In Luke 9 He asked, “Who do the crowds say I am?” He listened to his disciples answer and actually wanted to know what they

thought. Then Jesus asked a deeper question: “Who do you say I am?” When Peter answered “You are the Christ,” Jesus began teach-

ing his group about the Son of Man, self-denial, and the cost of following Him.

Ask. Listen. Teach.

PAINT FIGHT—On Thursday, July 10 we welcomed our new 6th-graders by throwing paint at them. They loved it! (See Page 2)

MISSION TRIP

Our youth group teenagers are taking our SonTreasure Island VBS on the road to First Presbyterian Church in Davenport, WA.

They’re a small church and we’re coming to bolster their children’s program and youth ministry by planning games, bible stories, and

youth events. Please pray for our teens as they take on this responsibility and leave their comfort zone to serve God. Come hear all

about our mission trip when we report at church service on September 7.

Notes from your Pastor Nominating Committee:

We met Saturday the 12th of July with 3 members of the Presbytery to go over directions for a “Restart” of our

pastor search for Calvary. It was decided that we should not change our MIF, but we must be more transparent

with our candidates upfront about the differences within our congregation. As well as the history of sexual mis-

conduct in our past staff. Both of these items will challenge and explain in part who we are today to a new

head of staff. Any concerns or items Session has

shared with us will be taken into consideration during the interviews.

.

On a sad note for us, Al Reiter has resigned from the PNC. He has given many many hours and time to this

project and we will really miss him.

We have the MIF posted and applications are again rolling in. We feel we are on a faster track because of our

earlier experiences. Everyone’s prayers and caring is needed for all of Calvary as we all work together for the

Glory of God.

From Christian Education Ministry Team:

Vacation Bible School was a success! Thanks to all who volunteered their time, energy, supplies, decorations, food, and donations to this ministry for our community's children and their families. We had an average of 58 kids (grades K through 5th), 20 youth, and 20 adults -- all on the church campus during each of the five days, June 23-27. There were also 20 other CPC volunteers behind the scenes as support (decorating, ironing t-shirt transfers, building, cleaning, moving furniture, etc.).

Our mission project this year, collecting ready-to-eat snacks for the Hospital Foundation's Backpack program, netted 313 items (our goal was 300)! Also, six children accepted Christ for the first time, and nine re-committed their lives to Him. The end of VBS celebration, a dinner before Saturday night service on June 28th, was prepared by Church Life. 98 people were at the meal, and 112 attended the worship service. Our church family was blessed by all the fun, excitement, dedication, and openness to the Holy Spirit that VBS makes possible! Glory be to God! **************************************************************************************************** Looking ahead to this September: be watching for information about our new Sunday School pro-gram, and a Fall Kick-off on a Wednesday evening, after Labor Day. Exciting things are planned!

Isaiah 40:31 - But they that wait upon

the Lord shall renew their strength;

they shall mount up with wings as

eagles...

From Th

e Eagle’s

Nest

Dear Calvary Family,

Richard and I have found out first- hand about the level of caring at Calvary. We talk about our church

family and now he and I have experienced an outpouring of well wishes, prayers and offers to help.

When he went into surgery on the morning of July 1st, I felt that a blanket of prayer was wrapped

around him. How can we thank you all enough for what you have done? People called, prayed, sent

cards, gave him movies to watch and came over for visits. It was faith in action. As an update, Richard

is doing well. He still has to be very careful about how much he moves around and how he reaches for

things. But he is gaining energy a bit at a time. We both thank you so much.

On a different subject, it was great to participate in Vacation Bible School. The “story lady” had a

great time! The experience has given me much to think about. As you know, we had a theme centered

around finding God’s treasures. As I look back on that week, I have reflected upon what treasures there

are for folks of faith. Scripture tells us of God’s gift of love, the gift of the Holy Spirit, and the gift of

Jesus’ life and salvation. Taking this as a starting point, there are some other gifts that have occurred to

me as I lift up the lid of the trunk and peer inside.

Freedom, resilience, inner peace and confidence are some of these treasures. Over the next couple of

Caller articles, look for more reflections upon these ideas. And there is an invitation from me to you:

please take time to think about your experience with spiritual treasures and share them with me.

It is good to be back to the work of ministry. Thank you again for your love and support.
