Dear Londoners,

The ROlympics, our cultural programme during the Olympic season, is the gift Romania is

making to the people of London. Curated and produced by the Romanian Cultural Institute (ICR) and set up in collaboration with numerous Romanian and British partners, it consists of 17

projects in film, theatre, visual arts, and literature that are inspired by the richness of London’s identity and that aspire to create a lasting

legacy. The ROlympics Programme showcases some of the most recognisable names in Romania’s contemporary arts as well as cultural

figures and sports personalities. The events unfold mostly in East London and especially in the Olympic Borough of Tower Hamlets and last from

April to October 2012.We are grateful to all our partners for their ongoing confidence and support.

EAST MEETS EASTA New Wave

of Talent28 April – 8 July 2012

Four Corners & ICR London

Four leading figures of the Romanian New Wave - Radu Muntean, Alex Baciu,

Cătălin Cristuţiu, Anamaria Marinca - join forces to help youngsters from the six Olympic boroughs

discover their talent in directing, acting, writing and editing and make their first short & documentary. The twenty participants receive professional guidance to

develop the necessary skills for the film industry through specific workshops. Their first short and documentary films

will premiere at the East End Film Festival in July 2012.

‘The ROlympians’ is a celebration of our most enduring international achievements in sports

and arts. The exhibition highlights not only the individual succes stories, but also the subtle correspondences and

solidarities between the athletic and the cultural triumphs. The heroes of tracks and arenas meet the demigods of letters, stage and music to form the immortal community of Romanian

‘Olympians’, blessed with talent and glory.

occasion to see Romanian Olympic champion fencer Laura Badea and British and American

Olympic gold medallists Tanni Grey Thompson, Edwin Moses and Chris Holmes reading & discussing classical and contemporary poetry, accompanied by

the Denys Baptiste Quartet.

MINIMAL COMPLEXITY

Award-winning architect Vlad Tenu exhibits in this year’s

London Festival of Architecture, a city-wide celebration of architectural talent in the

UK capital. Composed of 2368 laser-cut 14-gauge aluminum pieces, Tenu’s large-scale sculptural

installation ‘Minimal Complexity’ was created by using an algorithmic process derived from the principles of self-

organisation found in nature.

This project is part of the British Council’s International Architecture and Design Showcase 2012, a global gathering

of projects that investigate architecture and design from across the world, presented for the London 2012

Festival.

at the WideOpen School

Acclaimed artists Dan and Lia Perjovschi are part of the Wide Open School

at the Hayward Gallery alongside over 100 artists from 40 different countries, determined to establish

a temporary haven for lateral thinking. The renowned duo will lead group discussions on geographies and

public life, empowering participants to develop their own ideas and to rethink how to use books, mass media,

everyday culture and art.

The first Romanian performance at the London International Festival of Theatre

(LIFT) in this century is director and playwright Gianina Cărbunariu’s ‘20/20’. The theatrical

production investigates the conflict in multicultural and multilingual communities as exemplified by the

Târgu-Mureş inter-ethnic confrontations of March 1990. The performance is produced by the Yorick Studio in Târgu Mureş & dramAcum in Bucharest and played in

Romanian, Hungarian, French and English.

The ‘Edgerunner’, a masterpiece of the celebrated British-Romanian

artist Paul Neagu (1938-2004), is the first public artwork by a Romanian-born artist to be permanently installed in London. The sculpture will be placed close to where the artist lived and

worked in Islington and will be unveiled in a special ceremony before the official opening of the Games.

‘PlayPoint Puzzle’ is a massive interactive puzzle made of rotating parts that create images inspired by the Olympic Games.

A meeting place, a playground and a conversation hub, the puzzle is designed by artist Miruna Amza

‘Cultural Stations’, a project conceived by Minodora Cerin and Mircea Mărgărit,

is an outdoor installation composed of three modules: ‘The Literary Station’, ‘The Scientific

Station’ and ‘The Multicultural Station’, each with its relevant symbolism for London and the Olympic values. Feel free to stop, take a seat, and experience a new concept of open-air relaxation that creatively

combines cultural history and design.

HOUSE FROM HOBIŢA

Olympic Season (dates TBC) Brâncuși’s roots

A 100-year old wooden house from sculptor Constantin Brâncuşi’s village will be

dismantled, transported over the Channel in pieces and re-assembled in London, as part of a training

program in traditional crafts conducted by British experts of Prince’s Trust’s INTBAU. After completion, the house will open with a programme of traditional Romanian music and dance,

weaving and pottering workshops, and culinary exhibitions. The project is inspired by an idea of Luminiţa Holban.
