I A NEW SONG

.

Psalm 40: 1-3

INTRO: TWO OF THE GREATEST ORATORS OF AMERICAN HISTORY WERE HE NRY WARD BEECHER AND WENDELL THOSE MEN FOUGHT FOR ABOLITION IN A DAY WHEN MEN WERE STONED IN THE STREETS OF NEW YORK CITY AND BOSTON FOR BEING ABOLITIONISTS. THESE MEN WON THEIR BATTLE FOR HUMAN FREEDOM. SLAVERY WAS ABOLISHED.

ONE NIGHT AFTER THE WAR THEY MET IN A CITY WHERE WENDELL PHILLIPS WAS DELIVERING A LECTURE. BEECHER WENT TO HEAR HIM. AFTER THE MEETING BEECHER WENT BACK TO THE HOTEL-WITH PHILLIPS AND LAY DOWN ON THE BED WHILE PHILLIPS PACED THE FLOOR. "HENRY," HE SAID FINALLY' II HOW DID I DO TmIGHT? II

"I NEVER HKARD A MORE BRILLIANT SPEECH," WAS THE GUARDED REPLY.

"I FELT DEAD I II SAID WENDELL PHILLIPS. "I DIDN'T FEEL HAPPY ABOUT IT. SOMETHING WAS GONE OUT OF ME. YOU ARE MY FRIEND. TELL ME WHAT IT IS. "

"WENDELL," SAID BEECHER, "IT'S ALL WORDS: BEAUTIFUL, MAGNIFICENT, ARTISTIC WORDS. BUT YOU AREN'T FIGHTING FOR ANYTHING ANY MORE. THE JOY, THE SONG, APPARENTLY, HAS GONE OUT OF YOUR SPEECH."

WITHOUT A DOUBT, EVERY ONE OF US CAN RELATE TO WENDELL PHILLIPS.,BECAUSE OF SOME PAST OR PRESENT EXPERIENCE OF OUR OWN. WE MAY BE THE SAME WORDS , WE MAY BE THE SAME D UTIES, WE MAY BE SAME ATTITUDES -- BUT THE SONG HAS GONE OUT OF OUR LIVES.

BUT WE NEED NOT DESPAIR. EVEN GREAT AND GODLY MEN LIKE WENDELL PHILLIPS OR KING DAVID . LOST THEIR SONG ONLY TO FIND IT AGAIN.

IF YOURS IS THE FOR A NEW SONG A NEW JOY, GOD'S WORD OFFERS.TO MEET YOUR NEED TODAY.

How shall I make a crowr for him t this voice be and this body be full of health, and I can sing God's praise; but stop this ongue, lay me upon the bed of lang1,1ishing; and it is not easy to sing from the bed is no s power to sing when all is adverse. But it was a divine song w ich Habakkuk sang, when in the night he said -- "though the fig-tree shall n0t blos som, yet will I t rust in the Lord , and stay myself in the God of Jacob. 11 Son s in the night come only from God; they are not in the power of men. 11 - -

--Exegesis: David had been walking on a slippery, If

muddy, uncertain path but God's new song had set his feet upon a rock -- had redirected his life

--ILLUS: N .V. Peal addressed the National Convention of the Am. Assoc. of T. V. and Radio Broadcasters. Afterwards a member came to him and said had an employee who was in conflict with everybody, including himself. He fought with his wife, with his associates, and we almos thought we would have to let him go, though he was an old hand and we didn't want to. Of course his main conflict was with himself. Then we assigned him to religious programs. I don't know why we did it for he was the least religious man on that staff. Week after week that had tc pipe those programs out to the audience listening to that station. He had to listen, too , and it was painful for him. He resisted the message, criticizing those who gave the talks.

Finally," said this radio executive, "God penetrated his consciousness. I saw this man lose his conflicts and become an harmonious personality. Today he is one of the happiest men of my acquaintance, and a very efficient work ·
