Darlington Theatre Players Inc. (DTP) was established to encourage participation in all aspects of theatrical arts. Formalised from an existing group in the artistic hills of Darlington east of Perth, Western Australia in 1956, early performances were in the local hall, formerly a wine cellar. Following representations from DTP, the local shire built the main hall next to the existing hall in 1960, and later rebuilt the stage house and added the veranda and toilet block to the structure in 1978.In 1984 they took up a lease on the disused old Greenmount Primary

School in Marloo Road. After several building projects financed from their own resources, and from Federal, State and Local Government grants, DTP have one of the best equipped local theatres in the Perth area – the Marloo Theatre.

Les Misérables is the world’s longest running musical — a true modern classic based on Victor Hugo’s novel and featuring one of the most memorable scores of all time. With countless awards to its name, Les Misérables is as groundbreaking today as it was when it first premiered in London in 1985.

In nineteenth century France, Jean Valjean is released from 19 years of unjust imprisonment, but finds nothing in store for him but mistrust and mistreatment. He breaks his parole in hopes of starting a new life, initiating a lifelong struggle for redemption as he is relentlessly pursued by police inspector Javert, who refuses to believe that Valjean can change his ways. Finally, during the Paris student uprising of 1832, Javert must confront his ideals after Valjean spares his life and saves that of the student revolutionary who has captured the heart of Valjean’s adopted daughter. His world view shattered, Javert commits suicide, and Valjean finally attains the peace that he has sought for so long.

It has been a lofty ambition of mine for some years to direct this musical, the enormity of which has really hit home in the last weeks leading up to our opening. Les Misérables is one of those shows that everybody has an opinion on and most people very high expectations, taking on the role of directing this behemoth of musicals was always going to have its challenges.

I have seen several productions of Les Misérables and have always been moved, if not always by the performances, definitely by the music. The richness and complexity of Victor Hugo’s characters are given dimension with Herbert Kretzmer’s lyrics and licence to show their inner demons and feelings with Claude-Michel Schönberg’s stirring and complex music.

At times overwhelmed by what I had in front of me directing Les Misérables, I am truly grateful to have assembled a cast and crew, the talent and attention to detail of which I am humbled by. The work ethic and commitment to excellence from all involved have ensured that this director has had every opportunity of fulfilling his lofty ambition.

Special thanks to Tara for her leap of faith and my sincerest thanks to the committee of Darlington Theatre Players for showing the confidence in me in allowing me this wonderful venue to play out my dreams. I trust the show you see tonight repays this faith.

Director’s Notes

Joe Isaia (Director)

A long-time member of Darlington Theatre Players, Joe first ventured onto the Marloo stage in 1994 in The Unexpected Guest. Since then he has gone on to play roles in The King and I, Our Boys, She Stoops to Conquer, Carousel, My Very Own Story, Cinderella, Key for Two, Macbeth and most recently The Foreigner.

Favourite roles with other theatres have included productions of Breaker Morant, Same Time Next Year, The Woman Who Cooked her Husband, Scream Cora Scream, Death Of a Salesman, All My Sons, The First Henry, Two, Deathtrap, The Importance of Being Earnest, Death and the Maiden and the title role of Blackadder

for Serial Productions.

Joe has also had some success on this stage a number of years ago directing Our Boys and two years ago, Footloose. Other directorial credits include Nuts and Amy’s View at KADS, Revenge at The Old Mill, Noises Off and The Nerd for Serial Productions.

When not seeking attention in the Community Theatre world, Joe is actively employed as a Senior School teacher.

Tara Oorjitham (Musical Director)

Tara has been involved in music and theatre throughout her high schooling, university studies at WAAPA and through community theatre – usually playing a reed part in the pit. However, last year she musical directed her first show, Little Miss Sunshine at Stirling Theatre and was nominated for both Best Musical Director and the Break-Through Award (winner) at the Finley’s. Most recently she played in the band and musical directed Art in Motion Theatre Company’s Grease.

Tara has always loved musical theatre partly because of the music, the dancing and general spectacle but also because usually there is a happy ending. Les Misérables has been a challenge for a number of reasons. Firstly, as the title suggests, it is not especially happy. Secondly, musically, the score is incredibly complicated. Despite knowing what a challenge it would be, Tara had no way of saying no to the opportunity to conduct one of the best-loved musicals in the world. She would like to thank the production team, the cast, the crew and the band for making this experience such an unforgettable one.

Alistair has always been interested in music but has only recently become apart of the theatre scene back in 2016 in the stage production of Footloose at Marloo theatre, playing the role of Cowboy Bob. Alistair has really enjoyed being apart of Les Misérables and hopes you enjoy the show.

Emmy is extremely proud to be playing the role of young Cosette. She loves all things musical theatre and trains in singing and all styles of dance at Vanguard Performing Arts. Emmy made her theatre debut playing Chip Junior in APAN’s production of Beauty and the Beast and has since played Molly in Roleystone Theatre’s production of Annie and a Pageant Girl in Stirling Theatre’s production of Little Miss Sunshine. Emmy is extremely grateful to Joe Isaia and Tara Oorjitham for the opportunity to play this amazing role.

Ben’s mum has been subjecting her children to the Les Misérables soundtrack since the early 1990s so his participation in this production was inevitable. Ben’s past shows include The Wiz, Cosi, The Crucible, Little Shop of Horrors, Amadeus, The Producers, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Romeo and Juliet. Outside of theatre, Ben enjoys reading, watching other people play sport and writing short biographies about himself.

Catherine is a soprano who has previously performed with The Australian Opera Studio, The Melbourne City Opera, The Gilbert & Sullivan Society and various professional and amateur theatre companies across the country. She has been given the opportunity to play various lead roles in musicals, including Mabel in The Pirates of Penzance, Gianetta in The Gondoliers, Laurie in Oklahoma and Julie in Carousel. In 2006 she was a finalist in the ABC’s reality series, Operatunity Oz. She has studied classical voice in Perth, Melbourne and Sydney, and has a University Major in Theatre Arts. Catherine is so proud to be back at Marloo performing her dream role of Fantine.

Alyssa has been involved in the Perth theatre community since 2010. Past productions include Jesus Christ Superstar (Annas), Shrek: The Musical (Gingy/Sugar Plum Fairy), Wicked (Madame Morrible), Heathers (Ms Fleming) and Snoopy: The Musical (Peppermint Patty). Alyssa is excited to finally be involved in the renowned Les Misérables, and has had a fabulous time performing alongside the talented cast and crew!

Emma’s love for musicals likely came about from a childhood of rewatching her grandmother’s copy of Cats and dancing along. She has performed in several school productions, her favourite role being Cosette in Guildford Grammar’s Les Misérables. After a four year hiatus from the theatre, Emma has returned for what promises to be a great show.

Rhett had his community theatre debut playing Jack Manning in A Conversation in 2014 which won the best production for the season at the Old Mill Theatre. He has since played numerous roles at various theatres including revising the Jack Manning role in the second of the Jack Manning trilogy Charitable Intent. Rhett was awarded an adjudicator’s certificate for the comedic role of Jimmy Connor in The Rainmaker at KADS and has most recently played Mirabell in the Ray Omodei production of The Way of The World at Garrick Theatre. Other productions include So Much to Tell You, Brilliant Lies, Miranda, Relatively Speaking and The Nerd.

Bella’s love of Music Theatre began at Eastern Hills Senior High School when she played Cinderella in Into the Woods. She has since completed a Diploma and a Certificate IV in Music Theatre and is now studying Primary Education while scooping gelato and enjoying community theatre. Her theatre credits include: Cocky’s Crossing (Garrick Theatre), Rosemary Pilkington in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying (MMDC) and Side by Side by Sondheim (Playlovers). Les Misérables is a dream show for Bella – she has had a fantastic time working on this production and is excited to finally be performing amongst the hills community she grew up in.

David has enjoyed the performing arts for many years. He currently studies Music at John Curtin College of the arts and has had many opportunities to showcase his talents. His recent theatrical experiences include: Mulan Jr. Pheonix Theatre, Hairspray Jr. Luminary Entertainment, Fidler on the Roof Jr. Bel Canto Performing Arts and is excited to be playing Tweedledee in Marloo’s first season for 2020, Alice in Wonderland.

DAVID BELL

Thomas has been involved in theatre from a very young age. Some of his recent roles have been Roland Maule in Present Laughter, Frank Packer in Miss Westralia and Bassanio in The Merchant of Venice. Some of his favourite roles have been The Player in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, Thomas Novachek in Venus in Fur and directing God of Carnage by Yasmina Reza. Thomas has also started his own company, Black Martini Productions, through which he has directed and produced many shows. He has thoroughly enjoyed bringing Enjolras to life and hopes you enjoy the show.

Cassy is chuffed to the back teeth about making her West Australian debut with Darlington Theatre Players as Madame Thenardier. Originally from Eastern Victoria, Cassy sang in the Vision Australia Carols by Candlelight Choir every Christmas Eve on Channel Nine. Now she is fulfilling a lifelong dream of being part of Les Misérables, and she thanks the cast and crew for their tireless work, mastery and love.

Owen is well-known across the community theatre group for his amazing set design and construction skills and Les Misérables is no exception. You may remember seeing Owen on stage in Marloo’s 2017 production of Gentlemen Incorporated.

Les Misérables is Erin’s first appearance at Marloo after being involved with local theatres for many years. Most recently she appeared in the Ensemble of Limelight’s Kinky Boots, as Rizzo in Grease, Fay Baines in Ladies in Black, Jack’s Mother in Into the Woods and Little Sally in Urinetown (for which she won Best Supporting Actress at the 2018 Finley Awards). Erin is excited to be involved in such an ambitious and iconic production.

Owen has been a part of many choir ensembles in the past. Coming along to assist in set construction, he decided to join the cast as well.

Azza has been in two musical productions, both of them Jesus Christ Superstar. In 2018 he was one of the disciples, then in 2019 he’d had enough of the goody-two-shoes and played one of the scheming priests. He has a background in classical music and dance.

Chris has been performing in Perth since 2009. He studied in London, is a high school teacher and a 3 time Finley nominee. In 2019, Chris played Stefan in Ladies in Black, George in Kinky Boots (Limelight) and will be appearing in MisCast and Cluedunnit at Fringe 2020.

Saoirse is a Year 9 student and part of the musical theatre program at John Curtin College of the Arts. She has been performing onstage since her debut as Molly in GFO’s production of Annie at Crown in 2012, a role she reprised in 2014 in Koorliny Arts production of Annie. Other roles included Donkey in Shrek (Roleystone), Lena Marelli in Bugsy Malone (Phoenix), Brigitta in GFO’s Sound of Music at Crown in 2016, Les Misérables ensemble (ManPac) and most recently Millie in Thoroughly Modern Millie (JC). She hopes you enjoy this production of Les Misérables.

Sharyn is a vocal tutor, passionate about teaching all ages to sing. She’s also a nurse, working in dementia care and providing music to those living in aged care facilities. Sharyn has been in a number of musicals, including Jesus Christ Superstar (2018) and We Will Rock You (2018 & 2019), playing understudy as Killer Queen in the recent 2019 production. Les Misérables is a personal favourite show and Sharyn is so excited to be a part of an amazing cast and crew.

Aspiring to be an actor Kody had his first taste for acting when he secured the role of Young Simba in his school production of The Lion King Jr. Joining Marloo Youth Theatre Group this last year he was fortunate enough to land the role of Captain Fuzzy Vision in NoseDive Airlines and Harry in 1916: A Love Story. 2019 has seen Kody grow as he performed as Wilber in Luminary Entertainments Hairspray Jr. and Thor in Serial Productions The Nerd.

Brittany has had an active involvement in community theatre since her first show here at Marloo in 2010. She has since played several roles including Ariel in Footloose, Lucy in You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown, Meg in Little Women and Nikki in Picnic at Hanging Rock. Brittany made her directorial debut last year with KADS Theatre’s The Return and has also had a crack at writing, earning much success for her original show Comatose. Brittany is also a talented songstress, having studied contemporary music at WAAPA. Les Misérables is Brittany’s all-time favourite show and she is so blessed to be involved, both onstage and behind the scenes as the assistant musical director.

Rhianna is 12 years old and has been actively performing in productions, competitions and events around Perth since she was 5. She is currently studying Musical Theatre at John Curtin College of the Arts. She also studies dance at The Dance Collective as well as taking private lessons in singing, guitar and piano. Rhianna has a collection of community theatre credits including The Mikado, The Wizard of Oz, Oliver, Shrek the Musical, Beauty & The Beast, The Little Mermaid and Elf The Musical. She is extremely passionate about performing and has loved being involved in Les Misérables.

Keaton Humphreys has been in several school productions. At Youthfest, he was awarded the best double act (2017), best actor (2018) and receved an adjudicators award (2019). He performed as Michael in Elf at the Old Mill Theatre. Keaton has thoroughly enjoyed rehearsing with the brilliantly talented Les Misérables cast and crew. He’s sure you’ll be astounded by the talent.

Two years after playing the role at MPAC, Paul is thrilled to be reprising the role of Jean Valjean. He has been performing in musical theatre, bands and as a soloist for around 16 years. Some of his theatre credits include Jean Valjean (Les Misérables, 2017), Porter (Tarzan), John Procter (The Crucible), Darryl Van-Horne (Witches of Eastwick), Rooster (Annie), Hyde (Jekyll and Hyde) and Jerry (The Full Monty). Paul’s professional portfolio includes radio voice-overs and television – having played several characters on GWN7’s Saturday Club from 2001 – 2007. A self-taught guitarist and vocalist, Paul also worked as a musician around the south-west before moving to Perth.

Charlize has been involved in several DTP/Marloo Theatre productions and has loved every one. This year she is coming back to Marloo to work with the amazing cast and crew of Les Misérables in the role of Eponine. This is one of her dream roles and she has loved learning and growing as the rehearsal process has gone on. Charlize would like to thank you for coming and she hopes you enjoy the show.

CHARLIZE GOSNELL

Jemima is 12 years old and has been acting in local short films since she debuted at 3 years old as a “screaming toddler,” followed by “annoying younger sister” at 5 years old. She has been hooked on performing ever since. She played Duffy in Roleystone Theatre’s production of Annie: The Musical in 2018 and has recently played Bielke in Bel Canto Performing Arts’ 2019 production of Fiddler on the Roof jr. She loves to sing, dance and act, enjoys calisthenics, ice skating and drawing, especially digital anime style. This is Jemima’s first production with Marloo Theatre. She is thrilled to be participating in this amazing production and hopes you enjoy the show!

Heather Mackay is a graduate of the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) and Edith Cowan University, having studied music education and classical voice. She performed in many cabarets at high school and an opera at university. Les Misérables will be Heather’s first musical and she looks forward to the season.

Felix is in year 11, studying Music Theatre at John Curtin College of the Arts where he has performed in The Jungle Book, Shrek, Fiddler on the Roof, Anything Goes, and as Sky Masterson in Guys and Dolls. He has performed in over nineteen productions, from Shakespeare to pantomimes, with groups such as Roleystone Theatre, the Graduate Dramatic Society, Old Mill Theatre, and Harbour Theatre. Other highlights include playing Charlie Bates in the ICW production of Oliver, and performing in We Will Rock You at His Majesty’s Theatre. This is his first time performing on the Marloo Theatre stage.

Clara is 18 years old and made her stage debut as Mary in her school’s Nativity play at age 6. Since then Clara has gone on to perform in many other local productions including Grease, Beauty and the Beast, Legally Blonde and Shrek with APAN Entertainment and Camp Rock with Blackbox Productions as well as many local community theatre productions, most recently performing as part of the original cast of The Killdeer with Murdoch Theatre. Clara also enjoys working behind the scenes as a theatre makeup artist and is currently studying her Diploma in Screen and Media Creative Makeup. She is so grateful to have the opportunity to be involved in this amazing production!

Mathew is new to community theatre but has admired from afar for years. Throughout his years at Churchlands Senior High School, he was a part of Les Misérables (ensemble), Oklahoma (Ike Skidmore) and The 39 Steps (ensemble and music director). Mathew studied for 3 years at WAAPA for Classical Music Performance and has transitioned into Music Education at ECU. In addition to Music Theatre, Mathew is involved with the WA Charity Orchestra, being on the committee, the Tenor section leader of their Chamber Choir, as well as a member of their Wind Symphony (Trumpet).

MATHEW LEAK

Lilly has been in several productions at Marloo as well as in Little Miss Sunshine last year at Stirling Theatre and acted as a pageant girl. At Marloo, the first show she was in was Scrooge the Panto in 2016, where she was in the ensemble. She then went on to act in Jungle Book the Musical, where she played a monkey and a peacock. She has been in 2 one-act plays – Welcome to Nose-dive Airlines as a flight attendant and The Seuss Odyessy as Circe. Lilly loves the cast and crew of Les Misérables and is happy to be a part of the show.

Luke is a regular at Marloo, having directed A Chorus of Disapproval this year and appearing in several shows over the years including The Anniversary and Out of Order. He has performed in many musicals including 1916: A Love Story and Footloose (DTP), also Jesus Christ Superstar (Platinum) and Cabaret (Scarp).

Nic found his love for theatre in early high school, and has remained involved ever since. While Nic has other interests such as travel, AFL and boating (passed down from his father), he has never failed to be inspired by West End productions (passed down from his mother). Nic’s love for theatre is its ability to move an audience emotionally, and as his favourite musical, he firmly believes Les Misérables does this second to none. Nic’s cherished previous roles are The Baker from Into the Woods, Kenickie from Grease, and Jean Valjean in Les Misérables. He hopes his mates are ready for 3 hours of singing!

Alan began singing in choirs after attending an extension course at UWA. He started in 2004 and has performed in numerous shows in and around Perth mainly singing in the chorus. Some of the shows include Guys & Dolls, The Wizard of Oz, Les Misérables, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, We will Rock You and The Wedding Singer. He would like to thank Joe for having faith in him in offering him the part of Thenardier.

NIC MILLAR

Grant has directed and performed in venues as diverse as the Entertainment Centre, Blue Room, Playhouse, New Fortune Theatre, Dolphin Theatre, Perth Zoo, Primary and High Schools, Hotham Valley Railway and Atlantis Marine Park. He has won Finley Awards as best director (Equus), best actor (What the Butler Saw), twice won best supporting actor (Dr Faustus and Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me) and won a best actor award at the WA Film and Video Festival. Grant won best director at Dramafest at Marloo in the eighties and is thrilled to be back performing alongside his son Felix in Les Misérables.

GRANT MALCOLM

Tim Sadleir has been in various productions, mostly with the Goldfields Repertory Club in Kalgoorlie-Boulder. Among others he has been in Bouncers, Terry Pratchett’s MORT, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare Abridged, and as Cliff in Cabaret. In 2015 he was in Garrick Theatre’s Garrick Salutes Gallipoli before joining the Darlington Theatre Players at Marloo for Les Misérables. Being in Les Misérables has always been Tim’s dream and he has enjoyed working with this talented cast and crew.

John Saxon has been involved in theatre since high school. He performed in a musical production of Beauty and the Beast and later The Wind in the Willows and has also been involved in multiple award-winning fringe shows with Fenceline Theatre, namely Anyman from 2018 which one best Direction and The Book of Everything in early 2019 which received the emerging artist award. He hopes you thoroughly enjoy and are moved by Les Misérables.

Emily graduated from the University of Western Australia in 2017 with a BA, specialising in Classical Voice. From a young age, Emily has enjoyed being involved in many local productions. Since moving to Perth in 2013, Emily has been a dedicated member of the Gilbert and Sullivan Society of WA, performing in six shows with them, including playing Elsie in the recent production of The Yeomen of the Guard. From 2013 onwards, she has also performed in almost every one of Ellenbrook Theatre Company’s annual pantomimes, with her most notable roles being Cinderella in 2016 and Belle in 2018. This is Emily’s first experience performing with Marloo Theatre and she has loved working with such a talented cast and crew.

Tahli is no stranger to the stage and has an immense love for the performing arts! She made her debut in 2017 as a monkey in Jungle Book the Musical at Marloo Theatre. In 2018 she played the role of Tessie in Annie at Roleystone Theatre and played her first lead role as Olive in Little Miss Sunshine in the same year – for this role, she won the Veronica Overton-Low Award for the Best Youth in a Musical at the annual Finley Awards.

Sarah Ozanne is a lawyer/investigator by day, but loves singing in her spare time.

Sarah has appeared in a number of productions in Perth, including My Fair Lady, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, Phantom of the Opera, and various productions with the Gilbert and Sullivan Society.

Sarah has thoroughly enjoyed being a part of this production.

SARAH OZANNE

Marli has worked as an actress-singer for the past ten years. She has been involved in more than 25 productions across four countries, ranging from dramas and physical theatre to musical theatre and screen work. Career highlights include her television debut in the South African soap opera, 7de Laan, working as Company Manager for the Dutch musical, Spijt, singing in a trio-act, VIVA LAS DIVAS in Greece, and performing principal roles in The Mikado, Fame, Hairspray, Hamlet and two Afrikaans classics, Christine and Putsonderwater. Marli holds a Master’s degree in Drama and Theatre Arts and also enjoys photography. Doing Les Misérables with this amazing cast is a dream come true!

Liam Tickner has been involved with several community theatre productions; He performed as Jack Scott in High School Musical and Drake in Annie with Roleystone Theatre and later joined Art in Motion’s production of Grease as Roger. Liam loves community theatre and is grateful to be a part of this fantastic show with an amazing cast. He hopes you enjoy the show.

LIAM TICKNER

John has been involved in Theatre for the past 35 years and is a Life Member of the Albany Light Opera and Theatre Co. John’s experience in Theatre ranges from Performance, Directing, Stage Management, Set design and Construction to Lighting Design and Operation. Some of his more memorable roles have been. Judas Jesus Christ Superstar, Baron von Trapp Sound of Music, Mr Warbucks Annie, Jean Valjean Les Misérables, Sir Toby Belch Twelfth Night, Mr Bumble Oliver, Roger Debris The Producers, Oberon A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Most recently, Reverend Moore Footloose, rev Chasuble The Importance of Being Earnest and Friar Laurence Romeo & Juliet. He sees a pattern emerging.

Felix had his first stage appearance in 2017 when he appeared as Baby Mowgly in Marloo’s Jungle Book the Musical. For this role he won the Marloo Theatre adjudicators’ award for Best Cameo Role. Since then, he has been involved with MYTh (Marloo Youth Theatre) and has found his passion within this environment. In 2018 he acted as a plumber in Nosedive Airlines as a part of Marloo’s one-act season. Felix loves acting, singing and dancing, and his big dream is to become Australia’s next Hugh Jackman. He is a huge fan of Les Misérables and loves the rehearsals with the amazing cast.

Melissa has been in several productions at Marloo Theatre including My Fair Lady, Cinderella, Political Correction and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. She took a break while finishing off her studies but couldn’t stay away from theatrics long, taking up Stilt Walking as a side gig to her full time job in Marketing where she could perform as a range of characters and make others smile. Her more recent plays include Chiacgo and comedy improvisation shows at JOME Club. Melissa has loved working with such a talented group of thespians and under the direction of the passionate Joe and the patient Tara. She hopes you see the stage beaming with excitement tonight!

MELISSA SCOTT

Megan is thrilled to be part of the ensemble in one of her favourite musicals. Most recently she was in APAN’s The Wizard of Oz (2019) as part of the ensemble and understudy for Aunt Em/Miss Gulch. Earlier this year she had the honour of playing Jan in Aim Theatre’s Grease, and her other credits include roles in The Midnite Youth Theatre Company’s Silas Marner (2019) and Roleystone Theatre’s Annie (2018) and High School Musical (2017). In 2017 Megan received an award for ‘best actress in a lead role’ for her portrayal of Mary Baxter in Garrick Theatre’s Cocky’s Crossing.

When Tamara was 4, she joined a drama group and despite her mum’s advice to “Wait till the next show,” she learned a monologue in less than a week and performed it in a showcase with the group. She received a lot of applause and decided that she really liked being on the stage. Since then, She has been in many productions with New City Theatre, Bel Canto Productions and Art In Motion performing arts groups. Tamara has really enjoyed working with the positive and fun-loving Les Misérables cast and hopes that you enjoy the production.

Rachel is once again treading the boards at Marloo. A very full year starting with Picnic at Hanging Rock followed by A Chorus of Disapproval and most recently with the One-Act season in At Ten the Time Will Be. She has performed in many musical ensembles in her 10 years with the Darlington Theatre Players and is excited to be a part of this stellar cast.
