What do we mean by SAP HANA?
SAP HANA is
Acronym for "High-Performance Analytic Appliance“
An in-memory data platform designed for – performing real-time analytics– developing and deploying real-time applications
Different to other commercially available databases, SAP HANA is good at both– Transactional workloads and Analytical workloads
A platform which brings processes and analytics closer together, enabling clients to use real-time data and analytics, in order to make faster decisions and outperform the competition

SAP S/4HANA Assessment Objectives
The IBM HANA Assessment Tool helps SAP customers understand the impact of moving their current SAP
Landscape to S/4HANA.
Easy to run, IBM can quickly identify the impact and effort associated to the move to SAP S/4HANA.
How disruptive will the move to S/4 HANA be for your organization?
The effort required to move to
SAP S/4HANA depends on
the functionalities used within
your SAP landscape. IBM’s
impact assessment will help
identify the effort required
prior to starting the
project.
The move to SAP S/4HANA
can be invasive and
disruptive. It is important to
understand what the impact to
your custom code and
business processes are prior
to making the move to SAP
S/4HANA
The journey to SAP S/4
HANA can be
challenging. IBM’s
impact assessment will
help you prepare and
initiate some of the
activities up front prior
to starting your
transformation project.
1What effort is required for your organization to move to SAP S/4 HANA?
2How can your organization start to prepare for SAP S/4HANA today?

Assessment Timelines
The assessment timelines are split across three phases.

A New Era of Thinking
9
S/4 HANA Finance considerations (client experiences)
Greenfield implementation -> there is no burden from old SAP setup. On the other hand everything must
be designed from scratch if no best practise available or best practise can not be utilized.
From user point of view there is not much difference to ECC with New GL – user interface looks the
same. Fiori is of course something new and client is waiting for that (very much).
No ABAP report development in Finance – everything in this respect pushed to BW.
HANA makes the system very fast – even via Citrix...
Speed of HANA implementation compared to traditional ECC project: There is not much difference. In this
project much of time was used to finetune processes and map them against SAP applications. Once that
had been done implementation is like with traditional SAP.
Setting up all environments can be time consuming – especially when infrastructure is managed by
different vendors.

BW on HANA considerations (client experiences)
If running BW < v. 3.5 = Upgrade to BW v.7.5 on HANA (cloud). Do LSA++ (NB. This is a big tech. change).
If running BW v. 7.x => want to use Big data => Consider BW/4HANA (cloud) and/or IBM Watson (Cognitive).
Going HANA -> Make sure to run the ABAP code analyzer.
Some HW issues with HANA.
From user point of view - If you use BWA (BW Accelerator) the benefits are lower.
Native HANA will increase over time due to use of Hot- (Native HANA), Warm- (aDSO) and Cold- (NLS) data.
Plan 12 weeks for BW upgrade and HANA migration.
SAP BW/4HANA is SAP’s strategy for Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW)

SAP Applications may be function-rich software and a means to
innovate—but they are not without their drawbacks
Requires a scalable
infrastructure
SAP solutions require an
infrastructure that can grow to
meet demands.
Runs core business processes
SAP workloads are often
business critical and must be
resilient.
Requires specialized skills
SAP solutions require
specialized skills to manage
a variety of different
products.
Can be costly to maintain
Clients may dedicate
a large portion of their budget to
running SAP solutions.
Can be complex
SAP landscapes can be complex
because of the amount of products,
resources and skills needed.
Needs a high-performing
infrastructure
SAP systems are typically highly
transactional systems that require a
high-performing infrastructure.
