FOR TABLE TENNIS CHAMPIONS AND OFFICIALS WHO HAVEREPRESENTED THEIR COUNTRY IN WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Recognized bythe ITTF

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

In this issue, you will find some interesting reports about meetings and get-togethers within National SCI sections. It is a splendid idea to keep in contact with players who you used to fight against at the table – and even more, to get to know and understand the younger generations.

Unfortunately, some of our members have passed away since the last edition of our News in October 2013. We will remember them as table tennis enthusiasts and per-sonalities with special characteristics and skills. They are part of our history.

Looking at the Calendar of Events, we are excited to meet many of you - as officials, guests or fans - at the next highlights in Japan (World Team Championships), New Zealand (World Veterans Championships) and Portugal (European Championships). Respective information you can find on pages 5, 6 and 7.

Have you all received the new Booklet which was sent to you in September 2013, for the first time together with issue No. 95 of our News? If not, please contact us immediately. We have had many positive reactions – and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the ITTF for their assistance and of course Vera Bazzi, Anton Hamran, Jens-Erik Lindeand Gloria Wagener for their input. Great team-work!

Enjoy reading, take care and best wishes!

DOWN MEMORY LANE ISTVAN JONYER, HUNGARY

Born in Miskolc on August 4, 1950, Istvan Jonyer excelled at football and basketball during school, but instead chose to concentrate on table ten-nis while still a junior. In 1970, his family moved to Budapest. Istvan joined the Spartacus Club, where coach Ferenc Sido gave him plenty of good advice. He made his debut in the National team against Denmark; between 1967 and 1983 he played more than 320 matches for Hungary. He took part in nine World Championships and won 26 National Titles in different events.

He won four gold medals at World Champion-ships – singles in Calcutta (1975), men’s doubles with Tibor Klampar in Chiba (1971) and with Ga-bor Gergely in Calcutta (1975) and was a mem-ber of the Hungarian Team winning the title in a

sensational conquest against China in Pyongyang (1979).

Jonyer almost did not make it to Calcutta (!) in 1975: because of a customs violation committed when he returned from Paris; the Hungarian As-sociation suspended him….but then pardoned him five minutes before departure!

In the singles, he was at the brink of disaster al-ready in the first round against a young Swede, Wikström, but won 3:2 after 13:17 in the fifth game. Things were not easier in round 2 against Jaroslav Kunz: he was losing 0:2, but nevertheless carried the day in five games. A quick win over Li Peng (China) followed….and a much tougher op-position in the quarter-finals against Sarkhoyan (Sowjetunion). In the semi-final,

SWAYTHLING CLUB INTERNATIONAL

Kohno of Japan did not pose a particular prob-lem (3:0); moreover, Kohno had previously done Jonyer a favour by eliminating Surbek, the most successful player in the team event.

Finally, after a long time (twenty-two years), a European final at World Championships: Jonyer vs Stipancic in front of a crowd of 12.000.

It was an extraordinary hard, exhausting match in five games! Jonyer started off rather insecure-ly. Stipancic was up 2:0 in no time. But finally the Hungarian’s topspin got into high gear and, af-ter the 2:2 tie, the time for decision came in the fifth game. Both rushed towards the goal, and

taRejoicing! paThe Golden Team of Hungary

only Jonyer’s greater initiative decided the issue: 21:19, and the world title for 1975!

“It is not easy to have more knowledge than your opponent,” answered Jonyer once when asked what it took to become a world champion. “Therefore, other things prevail: self-confidence, top form at the right time, cheek which may bor-der on excessive behaviour but pulls you towards the goal, drives you to play a crazy, risky game at some point in the match. Risk is part and par-cel of the game of great players….you cannot achieve anything with calm expectation. Then, psychologically you must always control the situ-ation and….you must have a fair share of good luck in reserve.”

A great player!

COUNTRY CORNER BELGIUM

Belgian SCI members met up twice during the last few months.

Firstly, they visited the LIEBHERR Men’s World Cup in Verviers on Saturday 26th October 2013. National Champions of some 30, 40 and more years ago met for a brief get-together to have a drink or two in the restaurant at the venue. Ebby and Diane Schöler were also present and enjoyed the company of old friends.

A short report with three photos was published on the SCI website on October 30, 2013.

Now, on the occasion of the Belgian National Championships in Andenne on March 2, 2014 several members met up once again. Philippe Saive Management organised the event in a brilliant way. Amazingly, Jean Michel Saive, at the age of 44 years, won the singles title for the 25th time. He successively beat Delporte (4:1), Philippe Saive (4:3), Nuytinck (World Ranking 180, 4:3) and Benjamin Rogiers (4:1). Congratu-lations, Jean Mi!

Nathalie Marchetti won the women’s singles.

COUNTRY CORNER BULGARIA

On January 8, 2014, the annual meeting of the SCI Bulgarian section took place in the Sport Pal-ace of the Ministry for Youth and Sports in Sofia.

Seven members were present: George Damian-ov, Svetoslav Gerdjikov, Angel Kaltchev, Dimitar Karaivanov, Stefan Kitov, Nayden Konov and Al-exandar Sladkarov. Excused were – due to their stay in France - : Daniela Guergueltchova, Kata-lina Gatinska and Mariano Loukov. The meeting welcomed Mr. George Shone, former Bulgarian player, now coach from New York, as guest.

Svetoslav Gerdjikov informed the members re-garding the change of officials on top level in SCI, ETTU and ITTF. He also reported that Bul-garian players including veterans in 2013 partici-pated in 15 international tournaments at home and abroad. Bulgarian veteran players compet-ed in the European Veterans Championships in

Bremen and in the International Team Tourna-ment in Birmingham. This year, the town of Do-britch in the north of Bulgaria will stage a large event. In Plovdiv, a big hall for table tennis (35 tables) is being built. It is planned that Bulgaria becomes the host of the next team competition for veterans among the Balkan countries and also for the World Veterans Championships 2018.

It was decided to hold the next annual meeting in January 2015.

Best regards from Sofia were sent to SCI mem-bers all over the world.

COUNTRY CORNER ENGLAND

Ten members of the SCI met in Sheffield on March 2, 2014 at the English National Table Tennis Championships. We were delighted to welcome Richard Scruton, Nick Jarvis and Harvey Webb to their first meeting; unfor-tunately Ian Marshall was unable to attend, as were Don and Jill Parker. Others present were Jeff Ingber, Alan Ransome Jose Ran-some, Alan Cooke, Denis Neale, Bill Moran and Tony Chatwin.

I was pleased to announce that Mrs Ann Jones MBE had been awarded the CBE (Commander of the British Empire) in the Queens New Year Honours. Congratula-tions were expressed to Richard Scruton on his appointment as Secretary General of the ETTU and as Deputy Chairman of the ETTA.

I was able to announce that Desmond Douglas had completed his membership

form bringing our membership to 23, although no response has been received from Ann Jones or Matthew Syed. A discussion regarding mem-bership agreed that we should approach eligible active and inactive players in an attempt to in-crease our membership.

After looking at the nominations for the “fair play” award it was agreed that no suitable nomi-nation had been received and therefore the award would not be presented.

Thanks were expressed to the ETTA for their sup-port of the SCI.

During the Swedish Open (SOC) from November 27 to December 1, 2013 members of the Swed-ish SCI section with friends met in the Stockholm Eriksdalshallen for a very pleasant day.

Starting with a most tasteful and appreciated lunch, updated information was given regarding the Swaythling Club International. The President of the Swedish Association, Petra Sörlind then presented her view of our sport on a national and international level in a very interesting way.

Stories were told and many laughs were made, sitting together at the lunch table. Afterwards, a number of high quality matches were watched during the Saturday afternoon rounds.

The Swaythling Club Switzerland held its AGM on November 9, 2013 in Würenlos near Baden. After having enjoyed a rich Apero in the Clubhouse of the Tennis Club Würenlos, we went for a sight seeing tour to Baden where we visited the city, a number of inter-esting buildings, the river Rhein and the old City Tower.

The AGM, with our President Teri Földy in the chair, was held at the Rittersaal of the Gasthaus Sternen Kloster Wettingen, the oldest guest house in Switzerland. A wonderful dinner was served after the meeting. The day ended with many interesting discussions and memories. Everything was well organised by our member Thomas Sadecky – we thank him for his great efforts!

Look at this trophy! The Thall Sisters Cup, named in honour of Thelma “Tybie” Thall Sommer and her deceased sister, Leah Thall Neuberger – this magnificent perpetual trophy sits on display at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado, in the United States. A replica is given every year to the winner of the Women’s Singles Title at the U.S. Open Nationals, held in July.

The multi tiered Loving Cup made in Gold and Sil-ver says “Honouring Leah Neuberger and Thelma “Tybie” Sommer, U.S. Open and World Champi-ons”. The names of every woman winning the U.S. Open Title since 1933 are etched on the tro-phy.

Both Tybie and Leah, in the Table Tennis Hall of Fame, were awarded the Lifetime Achieve-ment Award in 2005. They are the only Ameri-

cans to ever win the World Mixed Doubles Ti-tle (Tybie/Dick Miles in London 1948; Leah/Erwin Klein in Tokyo 1956). In addition to the World Mixed Doubles Title, Leah won the U.S. Open Singles Title 9 times, while Tybie won 2 World Titles – Mixed Doubles 1948 and Cor-billon Cup in Stockholm 1949! Together, a dy-namic Duo represented the United States.

Tybie will be 90 in March, still active, playing in tournaments. At the moment, Tybie and her daughter Marilyn Feinstein, USPTA Tennis Pro & Peak Performance Coach, are writing a book: You Don’t Have to Be the Best to Beat the Best: How to Create the Zone for Peak Performance in Sports & Life (registered with The Library of Con-gress – Copyright Dec. 2013)

It is with great sadness that the death of Hans Giesecke is announced. He was 81 years old and passed away on Sun-day 29th December 2013 fol-lowing a short period of ill-ness.

Hans Giesecke was one of the long term officials in German and International Table Ten-nis. He was elected Honor-ary Treasurer of the ITTF in 1985, a position he occupied until 1999 when he became a Personal Honorary Member – in 2000 he was appointed to the ITTF President’s Advisory Council.

A highly respected official of the International Table Tennis, Hans Giesecke was equally prominent within the European Table Tennis Union, being the chair of the Um-pires and Referees Commit-tee from 1972 to 1976.

In Germany, he was the man at the helm of the Area As-sociation of Lower Saxony for many years, before tak-ing over the presidency of the DTTB from 1996 to 1999.

Professionally, he was the head of the National PoliceSchool in Bremen where he taught English, a subject in which he had genuine interest; in his spare time reading English was very much a fa-voured option.

In particular he was adept to the double enten-dre, a figure of speech in which a phrase may be understood in two ways, such intricacies of the English language enchanted Hans Giesecke and were often the source of his dry sense of humour.

The services of Hans Giesecke when documents

IN MEMORIAM HANS GIESECKE, GERMANY

needed to be translated from English to German and vice versa were invaluable.

He believed whole-heartedly in the principles of the SCI, friendship and fairness - and was a great help during SCI AGM’s.

He will be sadly missed.By Ian Marshall

A former Executive Vice President of the ITTF, he was elected to the ITTF President’s Advisory Council in 1999. Furthermore, he was the fou-nder of the Commonwealth Table Tennis Federa-tion and a life President of the Asian Table Tennis Union, playing an active role in the organisation of major events, usually as the guiding hand.

He gained national and international recognition for his administrative skills.

In his condolence message, ITTF President Ad-ham Sharara stated:

The founder member of the Latin American Table Ten-nis Union, Dr. Helios Farrell Murga passed away on 15th January, 2014. He was 88 years old.

An official of note – and in Mexico he was a player of note. He became national champion for the first time in 1963 and in the next ten years won virtually every title the country offered; he occupied a top ten place in the national rankings for 15 years. He first represented Me-xico at a World Championships in Nagoya 1971 and was ever present at the event until Tianjin in 1995.

Success as player but it was his capacity as an official that he became better known. He became President of the Mexican Table Tennis Federation and served as member of the Mexican Sports Confederation. He was President of the Latin American Table Tennis Union from 1973 to 1995.

In 1991, he was presented with the ITTF Merit Award and in 2010 was elected as ITTF Personal Honorary Member.

Notably, he met leading members of the Chinese Table Tennis Association in the era of “Ping Pong Diplomacy” with whom he established close links and a successful relationship in his endeavours to promote the sport of table tennis.

Our condolences go to his family. By Ian Marshall

It is with great sadness that the death of Uttam Chandarana from India is announced. He passed away on 2nd October, 2013; he was 94 years old.

The playing career of Uttam Chandarana span-ned two decades in the 1940s and 1950s. He was the Indian Men’s Singles National Champion four times – in Hyderabad 1943, in Colombo 1948, again in Hyderabad 1949 and in Baroda 1954. In addition, he was crowned Men’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles champion on many occasions.

Notably, he represented India at World and Asian Championships whilst being captain of the Indi-an team in 1952 when the World Championships were held in Mumbai (formerly Bombay).

“My friendship with Uttam started in 1952 and I saw him win his last Men’s Singles title at the Indian National Championships 1954 in Baroda”, reflected Gautam Divan, a lifelong friend and col-league. “Uttam also played against several world class players like Ivan Andreadis and Vaclav Te-reba when they visited India.”

Playing days over, his focus of attention changed. “He later coached budding players in the Rajku-mari Amrit Kaur Coaching Scheme”, continued Gautam Divan. “He helped guide the state table tennis association as a member of the commit-tee.”

IN MEMORIAM UTTAM CHANDARANA, INDIA

Farrokh Khodaji, who was crowned national champion in Madras 1966 and in Guwahati 1967, was grateful for the advice given by Uttam Chan-darana. “I was one among the five players to be coached by Chandarana in 1957”, he reflected. “I was a left hander like him and he had excellent backhand play; his forehand too was good; the coaching stint was very short but he used to fol-low my game and was my mentor.”

Everlasting memories of a person who made a notable contribution to table tennis in India. However, it was not only the sport of table tennis where he excelled. In addition, Uttam Chandar-ana was successful in tennis, athletics, billiards, snooker and cricket. He was made an hono-rary member of Cricket Club of India and Hindu Gymkhana.

“Uttam was one of the greatest table tennis play-ers India has produced and we, who were fortu-nate to see him play, will cherish very happy me-mories of his left handed all round game brought just before the sponge racket came onto the sce-ne”, concluded Gautam Divan. “May his soul rest in eternal peace.”

Good-bye Ciancio, champion of my youth!

In 2006 , because of an incurable illness, Lucia-no Winderling died, one of the strongest Italian players of all times. Note of the editor: We did not know about it at that time – therefore we re-member him now.

I had the luck to be his partner in the Italian team at the 28th World Table Tennis Championships in Llubljana 1965, appreciating his intelligence and his human qualities.

Born in Genova in 1938, after a degree in juris-prudence, in the sixties, he devoted himself to the guitar, studying in Italy and abroad. At the beginning of the seventies, he came back from London, where he played for a whole season. With a group of musicians, some of whom for-ming part of the permanent orchestra of the “Scala” in Milano – he recorded “Viva la rosa” which is, up to and including today, a record ap-preciated by musicologists. To explain his popu-larity, it is enough to say that his performances at the “Carlo Felice”, the most important theatre of Genova, made the crowd enthusiastic – it was like that also at his last opportunity, a few years before his death. If the music was his love, the table tennis has been his life.

Winderling was a natural talent of superlative quality, with an exceptional touch of ball control and a powerful smash; to these technical gifts he united an exciting vision of play and a superb tac-tical intelligence.

Luciano Winderling represented Italy 54 times – he took part in 5 World and 2 European Champi-onships.

He was National Champion in Singles 5 times, in Doubles 6 times and in Mixed Doubles 2 times. He also won 2 National Club Championships with his team of Genova.

Ciao Ciancio, rest in peace……near your old Bar-na racket!
