Dear Residents,

This year marks 53 years of independence for Singapore. Residents in Sembawang GRC gathered at various events to commemorate the country's birthday and had a good time celebrating. Read on to find out how we celebrated National Day in our town.

We have lots of good news to share in this issue. The upgrading works for Jelutung Harbour Park have finally been completed! After two years of planning and hard work, we are pleased to reveal its refurbished look in this issue.

The groundbreaking ceremony for Bukit Canberra, an integrated hub in Sembawang, on 1 July 2018 was a major highlight. Many residents turned up, excited about what lay in store for them in this integrated hub. If you did not manage to join us that day, you can find out more on what you have missed in this issue.

We are embarking on a large-scale Lift Replacement Programme in Sembawang GRC. A total of $33 million has been committed to replace 280 lifts at 135 blocks, benefiting a total of 12,600 households. When the new lifts are progressively completed from January 2019 to June 2020, residents can look forward to a more comfortable ride with greater reliability and enhanced safety in these brand new lifts.

In this issue, I would also like to share with you the precincts undergoing Neighbourhood Renewal Programme works in our town. A lot more upgrading works await us, too. With so much in store for us, we envision a more vibrant home here in Sembawang.

AT BUKIT CANBERRA

EMBRACING

A leisurely swim or gym workout while older family members engage in community farming will be made possible with the launch of an integrated sports and community hub, also known as Bukit Canberra, in 2020. On 1 July 2018, MPs of Sembawang GRC Minister Khaw Boon

Wan, Minister Ong Ye Kung, Mr Amrin Amin, Dr Lim Wee Kiak, PBM and Mr Vikram Nair graced the Bukit Canberra groundbreaking ceremony held opposite Block 300 Canberra Road. Bukit Canberra will be built on the same hill where the historic Admiralty House stands.

“Bukit Canberra is both a historical treasure and the brainchild of our residents. We have been engaging Sembawang residents since 2016 to co-create a vibrant gathering place for our residents and families. The general consensus was to conserve the greenery as much as possible, and at the same time put in place facilities that the community finds useful,” Minister Ong said.

The 12-hectare hub will house amenities such as a 40-stall hawker centre, a swimming complex with multiple pools, a 500-seater indoor sports hall, an outdoor forest gym with jogging trails, a polyclinic, a senior care centre and green spaces for community farming within a lush natural environment.

“I can see myself bringing my grandchildren here while I do gardening,” revealed resident Mr Hew SK, 67, who used to work at ORTO. He is also looking forward to using the gym to maintain his fitness.

Nine-year-old Satvia, who lives at Block 323 Sembawang Close, said excitedly: “Instead of going all the way to Yishun for a swim, the new swimming pool will be within walking distance.”

“TOWN UPLIFT”:NEIGHBOURHOOD RENEWAL

PROGRAMME IN SEMBAWANG GRC

T he Neighbourhood Renewal Programme (NRP) is an initiative that ensures our town is continually revitalised and upgraded. These renewal works include, but are not limited to,

children’s playgrounds, fitness corners, sports courts, and the construction of covered walkways and activity plazas.

Three precincts in Woodlands Division were selected to carry out these works. The NRP which was completed in the last quarter of 2017 had benefitted residents at Blocks 816 to 821, 824, 825, 828 to 835, 838, 840, 842, 843, 845 and 847 to 850 Woodlands Street 81/82/83 (Precinct 1).

NRP works at Blocks 801-810 Woodlands Street 81 were also completed in June 2018 (Precinct 2). These upgrading works include sheltered linkways, BFA ramps, drop-off points, covered hardcourt with community green plaza and upgraded recreation areas such as elderly fitness corners and children's playgrounds.

Building up community networks which can connect people to the help and support they need is important. Such was Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office Indranee Rajah's message to residents during a ministerial community visit to Sembawang GRC on 5 August 2018.

"This is something we should seriously consider because when it comes to addressing social issues like inequality, financial assistance alone is not enough," she said.

Chatting with residents over food and drinks at Kampung Admiralty, Ms Indranee was joined by Senior Minister of State for Trade and Industry Koh Poh Koon and Senior Minister of State for Communications and Information, and Culture, Community and Youth Sim Ann.

The three fourth-generation leaders had worked with Woodlands MP Mr Amrin Amin to speak to residents in small groups rather than hold a dialogue session.

During the visit, the leaders got the chance to speak to residents who shared stories about their hardships and how friendship and support was critical to help people through their ordeal.

Celebrating 53 years of independence is truly an accomplishment for Singapore, bearing in mind that we started as

an island without any natural resources. This year’s national theme, We Are Singapore, reminded us of how far we have come, amid a rejuvenated mission of achieving SG100 together as a nation.

Throughout Sembawang GRC, residents gathered at various National Day observance ceremonies and dinners to celebrate the nation's 53rd year of independence. Cheered by their parents, young children – representing our hope for the future – put up fascinating singing and dancing performances. It was indeed a memorable day for families as they took pictures at photo booths, played traditional games and enjoyed cultural performances.

Happy 53rd birthday! We are Sembawang GRC, we are Singapore!

@MASJIDIFTARYUSOF ISHAK

Learning about religion is lifelong, as residents discovered at an iftar, or breaking of fast, session at Yusok Ishak Mosque (Masjid Yusof Ishak) on 26 May 2018. MPs for Sembawang GRC Mr Amrin Amin and Mr Vikram Nair graced the event.

“This is a very special mosque. It stands for something that every one of us believes in – multiracialism. We honour Mr Yusof Ishak and we must remember how we got here, how far we have come as a result of values and meritocracy, as well as multiracialism. In the end, whether you are Muslim or non-Muslim, we are all here to serve one another. That, to me, is the essence of Ramadan. Ramadan is also a time of reflection – a time for us to come together to strengthen our bonds with our family and community,” Mr Amrin said.

Mr Nair also spoke of the need to learn about other religions. “The more you learn, the more you understand and the deeper the relationships and trust that you build with people from other religious backgrounds,” he explained.

Amid enjoying a sumptuous feast after reciting prayers, Mr Md Zaidee, 28, said: “Fasting cleanses our sins. It is a form of spiritual relief.” His wife, Madam Farah Nuratikah, 26, noted that gatherings such as coming together for iftar strengthen bonds among the community.

Mr Md Akasha, 28, revealed some unknown facts about Islam. “If you break fast for 10 people by treating them, its (merit is) as though you yourself are breaking fast 10 times. Also, when you smile, you are in fact doing a charity,” he said. These are meaningful lessons indeed!

There was a festive air about Kampung Admiralty as families and students came together to celebrate diversity in conjunction with Racial Harmony Day. Aptly themed “Hues in Tune”, the Sembawang GRC PAssionArts Festival 2018, held on 21 July 2018, saw many multiracial and multicultural elements being showcased

through various musical performances and display booths.

Event organising chairman Mr Kevin Teh Eng Lai said he was inspired by Singapore’s multiculturalism and decided that an event like this could beckon the younger generation to get in touch with their roots. “While learning more about our heritage and culture, it is also a way of teaching them to respect each other in our multiracial society,” he said.

Mr Teh added that he was touched by the warm response from the education sector as 23 schools were eager to join the event. “I was expecting only about 10 schools to be with us. This is great because it shows how supportive schools are in wanting their students to gain better understanding of different cultures,” he said.

On display during the event were quaint ornaments and items relating to traditional Chinese, Indian, Malay and Peranakan culture. Kids also had the chance to explore their creativity by participating in painting and colouring activities throughout the day-long event.

The event was graced by Sembawang GRC grassroots advisors Mr Khaw Boon Wan, Mr Amrin Amin and Mr Vikram Nair.
