ABSTRACT
A Needs Analysis of Thai Executives’ English proficiency:
A Case Study of Carpets International Thailand Limited.
By Sinlapachai Chitpupakdi
The purpose of this study was to examine the problems, the needs, and the
proposed learning course of using English for communication at Carpets International
Thailand (CI) in order to improve their English skills and create an effective English
training course to match CI’s executive staff needs. The research questions were: (1) To
what extent are there problems in using English for communication within the
organization? (2) To what extent is there a need for English skills for communication
within the organization? (3) What type of English training course is appropriate for CI’s
staff to develop communication within the organization? The study was conducted
utilizing semi-structured interview with open-ended questions as the primary research
instrument. The sample was three CI executive officers. The data was coding according
to three themes, relating to the three research questions as follows: (1) The problems in
their use of English in the workplace, (2) The need for English language skills, and (3)
The types of learning courses needed to improve English communication. The results
showed that the listening skills of CI’s executives was the most significant problem,
followed by speaking skills, and the executives need to improve the these two skills as
the highest priority. Furthermore, writing and reading skills were also shown to be
significant problems with the three participants’ subordinates and these also need to be
addressed. Moreover, the results revealed that any English training course should be
structured upon a small class model, thus facilitating closer teacher-learner interaction. In
addition, the results of this study provide some useful suggestions for future studies.

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the study
It is the fact that, today, the world has become globalized at least in large part as a
result of the rapid development of information technology. English language has become
an international language which is used as a medium for intercultural communication.
This communication takes place within the diverse domains of politics, economics,
education, business, the military, advertising, broadcasting, movies, popular music, and
numerous other areas of communication that nowadays span the globe.
In particular, English has become the most useful communicational tool in business
and commerce, and it is considered the most widespread business language for
international discourse. Due to economic growth around the world and the benefits of a
liberalized trade, many countries that share some common interests are now grouped
together into single markets such as EEC, APEC and, in 2015, the AEC. As a result,
English has become increasingly necessary for international business communication and
trade within these regional organizations (Dudley-Evans & St John, 2002, pp. 31-32).
Even though English is a foreign language in Thailand, English is used widely for
business, and this tendency to use the English language is increasing and spreading
continuously. Thailand has significantly promoted trading with international companies
which use English as either the first language or as a foreign language. Therefore,
communication in English has become a necessity within Thai organizations, and English
language proficiency is a requirement for employees in many local and international
companies.
Most companies promote business-related knowledge as well as other skills of
employees in order to support the growth of the company amongst intense business
competition. A lack of employees with adequate proficiency in English communication
may result in a loss of business opportunities and profits.
1.2 Statement of the problem
This paper consists of a case study of Carpets International Thailand Public
Company Limited (CI) and the need for executives to increase their English proficiency.
CI is the largest contract carpet manufacturer in Asia, supplying carpets to the hospitality,
cruise liner, aviation and automotive industries. CI was established in 1974. At the
beginning, the company was managed by Thais, however, in the last two years the
company was merged with a US company and the senior executives, managing director
(MD) changed from Thai to American. As a result of this change, the management style
of CI has changed including its vision, mission, business objectives and strategies, and –
in particular – the language needed for communication.
At the end of 2013, CI organized a meeting to consider the key performance
indicators (KPI) – with presentations focused on the objectives and strategies related to
financial result cost per unit, productivity, and cost saving. The chair of this meeting was
the American MD and 22 department representatives were in attendance. Almost all of
the attendees gave presentations in Thai language, and only two department
representatives gave presentations in English. This resulted in problems in
communication, particularly for the MD who cannot speak or understand Thai.
1.3 Purposes of the study
This study is conducted with the major aim to explore and analyze the idea of CI
executive toward:
1. Problems with using English for communication within the organization.
2. The need for English skills for communication within the organization.
3. The type of training course that should be developed for employees.
1.4 Scope of study
This research is limited to only the sample group of CI executive staff who at the
managerial level. This study was conducted utilizing the interview technique, with only
three participants – R&D manager, Broad Tufting Manager, and the Company Secretary
– therefore the findings could be only true for CI in the year 2013, however, the findings
could be applied to other similar businesses.
1.5 Definition of terms
Definitions of term in this study are the following:
EEC: European Economic Community
APEC: Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation
AEC: Asian Economic Community
EFL: English as a Foreign Language
CI: Carpets International Thailand Public Company Limited
MD: Managing Director
CI executive staff: Refers to the three participants (three managers) under investigation
Broad Tufting: A type of carpet produced by a stitching machine
1.6 Research questions
This research paper aims to answer the following questions:
1. To what extent are there problems in using English for communication within
the organization?
2. To what extent is there a need for English skills for communication within the
organization?
3. What type of English training course is appropriate for CI’s staff to develop
communication within the organization?
1.7 Significance of the study
The results of this study reflect the English language skill needed of CI’s staff and
provide guidelines in order to arrange learning courses. The tool of this study use an
interview which may lead the study to get rich and deep information.
1.8 Organize of the study
This study is divided into six chapters, as follows:

LITERATURE REVIEW
This chapter provides a literature review concerning the following topics: English
for specific purposes, needs and needs analysis, needs analysis method, and related
research studies.
2.1 English for Specific Purpose (ESP).
2.1.1 Original and Development of ESP
From the early 1960s, English for Specific Purpose (ESP) became a
prominent area of EFL learning. Since the 1960s there has been an age of enormous and
unprecedented expansion in scientific, technical, and economic activities on an
international scale. This expansion unified the world that is now dominated by two forces
– technology and commerce – which has generated a demand for a single international
language. As economic power has belonged to the United States in the post-Second
World War world, English has had a primary role as an international language. As
Hutchison and Waters (1987, p. 6) commented:
The effect was to create a whole new mass of people wanting to learn English,
not for the pleasure of prestige of knowing the language, but because English
was the key to the international currencies of technology and commerce.
There are three common factors driving the emergence of ESP around the
globe: the demands of a “Brave New World”, a revolution in linguistics, and a focus on
the learners (Hutchinson & Waters, 1987). First, the demands of Brave New World which
has developed in the wake of the Second World War which brought the force of science,
technology and commerce to the fore, generating a demand for an international language.
Furthermore, the oil crisis of the early 1970s resulted in Western money and business
flowing into the oil-rich countries. Thus, the primary language for communication among
people from different countries became English. The general effect of these
developments resulted in a mass of people wanting to learn English as it was an important
key to success in the fields of science, technology, and commerce.
The second reason was a revolution in linguistics. At the same time as the
demand was growing for English courses for specific needs, influential new ideas began
to emerge in study of language. Traditional linguists set out to describe the rules of
English usage, that is, the grammar. However, the new studies shifted attention away
from the formal features of language usage to discovering the ways in which language
was actually used in real communication (Widdowson, 1978). Hutchison and Waters
(1987) pointed out that one significant discovery was in the ways that spoken and written
English vary. In other words, if language in different situations varies, then tailoring
language instruction to meet the needs of learners in specific contexts is also necessary.
The final reason was a focus on the learner. The new educational psychology
also contributed to the rise of ESP, by emphasizing the central importance of learners and
their attitudes to learning (e.g., Rodger, 1969). Learners seem to have different needs and
interests, which influence their motivations to learn. Therefore, it would be more
effective to study the learning methods by which learners acquire language rather than
simply focus on the teacher’s methods of language delivery. Therefore, focus on learners’
needs became equally paramount as the method employed to distribute linguistic
knowledge.
At the beginning, approaches to teaching ESP were similar to traditional
English language teaching (ELT), which includes a general interest nature, reflecting a
literacy rather than a specific subject audience, and no attempt to match the topic to the
learners’ subject area. Today, the ESP approach has also changed from teacher-centered
to learner-centered, and learner’s needs were taken into account when courses were
designed (Kennedy & Bolitho, 1984).
2.1.2 Definition of ESP
Many scholars have commented that ESP cannot be easily defined because it is a
dynamic subject. The term “English for Specific Purpose” implies that what is specific
and appropriate in one part of the globe may not be appropriate elsewhere. Thus, it is
impossible to write a universal definition of ESP. Strevents (as cited in Robinson, 1991,
p. 1) suggested that “a definition of ESP that is both simple and watertight is not easy to
produce”. However, looking at a range from narrow to wide of definitions of ESP will
help to understand its specific purpose. Robinson (1980) mentioned that ESP has a focus
on the purpose of the learners, and refers to the whole range of language resources.
Robinson (1991) then defined ESP as a course involving education, training, and practice
and three major realms of focus: language, pedagogy, and the students’ specialist areas of
interest.
Strevens (1988) defined ESP by identifying its absolute and variable
characteristics. The absolute characteristics are that ESP consists of English language
teaching which is: (1) defined to meet specific needs of learner; (2) related in content (i.e.
in its themes and topics) to particular disciplines, occupation and activities; (3) centered
on the language appropriate to those activities in syntax, lexis, discourse, semantic, and
analysis of this discourse; and (4) in contrast with “General English”.
The variable characteristics that ESP may be, but is not necessarily, limited to the
learning skill to be learned and not taught according to any pre-ordained methodology.
Thus, Dudley-Evans and St. John (1998) offered a modified definition of ESP which was
originally defined by Strevens (1988). The revised definitions are as follows: (1)
Absolute characteristics including: ESP is designed to meet specific needs of the learner;
ESP makes use of the underlying methodology and activity of the disciplines it serve; and
ESP is centered on language appropriate to these activity (grammar, lexis, register, skills,
discourse, genre); and (2) Variable characteristics including: ESP may be related to or
designed for a specific discipline; ESP may use, in specific teaching situations, a different
methodology from that of general English; ESP is likely to be designed for adult learners,
either at a tertiary level of institution or in a professional work situation; and ESP is
generally designed for intermediate or advanced student (Dudley-Evans and St John,
1998, pp. 4-5).
ESP courses have been regarded as communicative in nature at a time when
General English courses focused less on this characteristic. More recently, Widdowson
(1998, p. 3) also pointed out “My English at the moment is designed to serve a specific
purpose and it is that which makes it communicative,” Brumfit (as cited in Afifi, 1991,
p. 19) might have produced the best definition to cover almost all aspects of ESP as
follows:
Frist, it is clear that an ESP course is directly concerned with the purposes for
which learners need English, purposes which are usually expressed in
functional terms. ESP thus fits firmly within the general movement towards
communicative teaching of the last decade or so.
2.1.3 The Types of ESP
ESP is divided into two branches of the “ESP family tree” which are often
drawn as English for Occupational Purpose (EOP), involving work-related needs and
training in the use of English, and English for Academic Purpose (EAP), regarding using
English for academic purposes, to pursue ones’ studies (Munby, 1978; Robinson, 1991).
Hutchinson and Waters (1987) distinguished ESP by the nature of learners’ specialism
into English for Science and Technology (EST), English for Business and Economics
(EBE) and English for Social Sciences (ESS). Business English includes English for
General Business Purposes (EGBP) and English for Specific Business purpose (ESBP).
The branches of ESP mentioned here can be illustrated as follows:
Figure 1: Branches of ESP
2.2 Needs Definition
How to define needs has become problematic since definitions and types of needs
have been discussed by a several writer from different viewpoints. It is therefore difficult
to find an agreed definition of needs. Robinson (1991) defines needs as “a need is a
matter for agreement and judgement, not discovery”. This means that the needs
established for a particular group of students will be a result of a needs analysis project
and will be affected by the ideological preconceptions of the analysis. Robinson (1991, p.
7) stated that:
The need that are established for a particular group of students will be an
outcome of a need analysis project and will be influenced by the ideological
preconceptions of the analysis.
Yet, a number of writers have discussed different types of needs. For example,
Widdowson (1981) proposed two type of “learners’ needs”. The first one is goal-oriented
which relates to the learners’ extremity behavior, in other words, what the learner needs
to do with the language once he/she has learned it. The second is process-oriented, which
refers to the learners’ transitional behavior, that is, what the learner needs to do to
actually acquire the language. Also, Hutchinson (1987) described the former as target
needs, and the latter as learning needs. Also Robinson (1991, p. 7) stated that:
The need that are established for a particular group of students will be an
outcome of a need analysis project and will be influenced by the ideological
preconceptions of the analysis.
2.3 Needs Analysis in Language Learning
Needs analysis plays a vital role in the process of designing and carrying out
any language course, whether it be an ESP or general English course, and its
significance has been acknowledged by several scholars and authors (Munby, 1987;
Hutchinson & Waters, 1987; Robinson, 1991). Munby (1987) created a model of
needs analysis which has been widely studied and discussed, which is Participant
(Learner) – Communication needs processor (CNP) – Profile of needs.
Figure 2: Munby’s Model of Need Analysis.
Participant: this is the information about the identity and language of the
learners such as age, sex, nationality, present command of target language, other
languages known and extent of command.
Communication Needs Processor (CNP): this is an investigation of the
particular communication needs according to sociocultural and stylistic variables
which interact to determine a profile of such needs.
Profile of Needs: this is a needs analysis which focus on the students’ needs at
the end of language course. It can be called a Target Situation Analysis (TSA)
(Chambers, 1980, p. 29).
In addition, Robinson (1991, p. 9) proposed the idea of Present Situation
Analysis (PSA) which aims “to establish what the students are like at the start of their
language course, investigating their strengths and weaknesses.” Robinson (1991)
concluded that, in practice, information regarding both TSA and PSA is likely to be
found simultaneously. Thus, needs analysis may be seen as the combination of TSA
and PSA.
Moreover, Dudley-Evans and St. John (1998, p. 125) proposed a model
concept of needs analysis which includes the analysis of: (1) environmental situation –
information about the situation in which the course will be run (means analysis); (2)
personal information about learners – factors which may affect the way they learn (wants,
means, subjective needs); (3) language information about learners – what are their current
skill and language use (present situation analysis); (4) learner’s needs from course – what
is wanted from the course (short-term needs); (5) language learning needs – effective
ways of learning the skills and language determined by lacks; (6) professional
information about learners – the tasks and activities English learners are using English for
(Target Situation Analysis and objective needs); and (7) how to communicate in the
target situation – knowledge of how language and skill are used in the target situation
(register analysis, discourse analysis genre analysis). The current study aims to use TSA
and PSA as the theoretical framework.
Needs assessment is recognized as the necessary starting point in designing
curriculum material for ESP especially in regards to business communication. Schmidt
(1981) has suggested that there were several instruments for gathering information about
target needs such as questionnaires, interviews, participant observation, case studies,
press advertizments, testing and collecting of authentic material. The advantages and
disadvantages of each instrument were also discussed (Hutchinson, 1987; Mackay, 1978;
Robinson, 1991; Schmidt, 1981). Needs analysis, however, is not a once-and-for-all
activity; in fact, it should be a continuing process. Moreover, the importance of learner
motivation in the learning process, learners’ perceived wants and self-perceived needs
cannot be ignored (Hutchimson, 1987; McGinley, 1984).
2.4 Related Research Studies
There has been a great deal of useful research studies related to ESP and needs
analysis. The first one under the topic “A Survey Study of Export Staff’s Needs and
Problems in English Communication at Thanulux Public Co Ltd” was conducted by
Maithong (2011). The main aim of this study was to analyze the needs and problems of
Thanulux export staff in using English in their workplace. Also, it studied staff wants
regarding English training, in order to design an English training course to satisfy their
professional needs. A questionnaire was administered to 22 staff members working in the
Export Department at Thanulux. All the participants had received at least a bachelor’s
degree. Thus, the English educational background of the participants was at the graduate
level. According to the results of the study, the writing skill was considered as the
greatest problem among the four skills. On the other hand, the results showed listening
and speaking were the most important skills needing development, followed by writing
and reading skills. Therefore, Maithong proposed an English training course that
emphasized the listening and speaking skills.
Another research study entitled “Needs Analysis of English for Work: A Case
Study of Higher Certificate Students of Commerce at Eastern College of Technology (E-
Tech)” was conducted by Saisuttirak (2010), and it also serves as a useful guide for the
current study. This particular study determined the situations in which vocational students
have to use English in the import-export business in order to examine their wants in terms
of English at work. There were two groups of subjects under study. The first group was
60 higher certificate students studying commerce in three majors OF Marketing,
Accounting and Computer Science (20 students in each major) at E-Tech. This group
enrolled in the course “English for Work” in the first semester of 2010. The second group
consisted of production supervisors and personnel managers at NEC In Frontier Thai Co.,
Ltd. and Valeo Compressor (Thailand) Ltd. Both companies use English language in the
workplace. The data was collected by using questionnaire for the first group and
interview for the second group. The results showed that the students of all three majors
were lacking in all four skills, and they wanted to improve their speaking skill first,
followed by listening, writing and reading skills. The researcher found from interviewing
that there were three positions that need English for work including clerk, administrator,
and telephone operator.
Another research study, “Needs and Problems of Officials Working in The
Department of Fisheries in Using English Language for Communication at Work”, was
conducted by Jaroensak (2009). This particular paper investigated the needs and
problems that officials from the Department of Fisheries (DOF) in Thailand encountered
when using the English language in the workplace. The aim of this study was to improve
DOF officials’ proficiency in English communication. The data was collected by
questionnaires which were distributed to 200 officials, with 166 complete copies returned
for data analysis. According to the results of the study, listening skill had the highest level
of problems followed by writing skill. Similarly, the results showed that listening skill
was the most significant skill that DOF officials needed to use for English
communication, whereas writing skill was the least significant skill. However, speaking
was a significant skill which needs to develop, while the least needed skill was reading.
This result can help DOF to have a clear understanding of the English needs and
problems of their officials. Thus, an English training course incorporating listening and
speaking skills should be developed and implemented. Moreover, the results of this study
provided some useful guidelines for the formulation of the current study.
Similarly, the study under the topic “English in the Financial Service Business:
A Needs Assessment” conducted by Chalaysap (1992) was also of beneficial guidance.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the needs in the financial service business in
learning the English language, and, in addition, to reveal the issues and situations in
which different language skills had been used. The data was collected by distributing
questionnaires to the 174 mid-level executives, 113 directors and managers, and 61
assistant directors and managers of the financial service business. After the
questionnaires were completed, researcher interviewed some of the respondents to
expand upon the information provided in the questionnaire. The researcher reported the
degree of frequency of using English skills by department chiefs, supervisor, and officers.
The result showed that reading skills was used most by supervisor and upper-level
employees, followed by writing, listening, speaking, and translating, respectively. In the
same way, reading skill of the officers were also the most frequently used skill, followed
by writing, listening, speaking, and translating, respectively.
Finally, the paper “English for specific purpose (ESP) in Four Technological
and Vocational Higher Education Institutions in Taiwan, with Particular Reference to the
Department of Applied Foreign Language” conducted by Hsiu (2003), also provided
useful guidance for this current study. In general, the purposes of this study were to
investigate the issues and problems arising at the Department of Applied Foreign
Language – English (DAFL-E) and the Department of Applied English (DAE). The data
were collected from interviews with the head teachers and teachers, and students were
surveyed from four selected institutes including one junior college, two institutes of
technology and one university of technology in four regions of Taiwan. It was found that
the DAFL-E/DAE faces several challenges. First, teacher training to teach ESP is not
developed, thus the specific goals and distinctive features of training have not been
established. Second, the department does not adequately prepare students for future
employment through course design, English proficiency qualification and industrial
placement. Moreover, the students expressed dissatisfaction toward the departments. The
researcher recommended that ESP should be incorporated into business-related English
courses in order to promote satisfactory attainment in English competence and business-
related knowledge, and thus contribute effectively to meeting the growing demand of
industry.
The literature review shows that many components or aspects of needs analysis
are important in the advancement of an ESP course, particularly for professional
purposes. Using numerous needs analysis tools will be profitable in motivating and
improving the undertaking of English courses in order to properly match the learners’
ability as well as match the needs of the current labor market.
CHAPTER III
METHODOLOGY
This chapter describes the methodology used in this study which consists of
research methods and research procedures and covers subject, instrument, data collection,
and data analysis.
1.1 Research Methods
This research explores the problems with English communication within the
organization and the needs in relation to English competency improvement. This study
takes a qualitative research approach that utilizes the interview as the instrument. The
researcher used the interview method in order to collect the information both from a
breadth and depth of sources. It was considered most appropriate to investigate the
quality of relationship, activity, situation, or material (Wallen & Fraenkel, 2001, p. 432)
of the participants’ problems and needs regarding English language learning.
1.2 Research Procedures
3.2.1 Subjects
The subjects of this study were three executives working in three departments of
CI which are: (1) Research and Development Department (R&D), (2) Production
Department, and (3) Company Secretary. These three executives who constitute the
sample of the research shared the same business circumstances. In other words, the nature
of their daily routine involves dealing with customers from different countries, and using
English for communication. Moreover, they have to communicate with the American MD
almost every day. All the subjects had received at least a bachelor’s degree in various
fields. Thus, the English education backgrounds of the subjects was at the graduate level.
The details are shown in Table 1 below.
Table 1 Research Participant
Participant Position Gender Age Education Working Experience (years)
A R&D manager Female 39 Bachelor Degree of Statistic (Thailand) 16
B Production Manager Male 38 Bachelor Degree of PE (Thailand) 17
C Srcretary Female 42 Bachelor Degree of MRIT (Australia) 19
3.2.2 Instrument
The research instrument was interview, using open-ended questions allowing the
respondents to expose their ideas about problems and needs in terms of using English for
their work. These open-ended questions were approved by the advisor who is an expert in
applied linguistic research at NIDA. The interviews were designed as semi-structured
interviews and this interview approach enabled participants to tell their stories through
their own tales and ensured that the data from the participants’ perspectives was
presented without the researcher’s influence (Seliger & Shohamy, 1989). Moreover, the
main purpose of an interview is to obtain a special type of information. The researcher
wants to discover what is “in and on someone else’s mind” (Patton, 2002 p. 341).
3.2.3 Data Collection
In this study, the data was collected by interviewing while recording on audio-
tape. The interviews were conducted in the Thai language to ensure that the data was
most rich with relevant information. The same set of questions was asked as they
matched the positions and situations of all three participants. The researcher interviewed
the executives one by one, in appointments arranged by e-mail. Each interview took
approximately one hour in early May 2014. After the completion of each interview, the
conversation was transcribed.
3.2.4 Data Analysis
The responses of each participant were categorized into major themes. These
themes are:
1. The problems in their use of English in the workplace.
2. The need for English language skills.
3. The types of learning courses needed to improve English communication.
The interpretation of the data was conducted by exploring the participants’
aspects concerning each theme. The responses of each participant that corresponded to
each theme were extracted from the transcribed interviews. Descriptions, discussion and
comparisons among the participants were made, as well as agreement or disagreement
with related theories or related research.
CHAPTER IV
FINDINGS
The three participants were interviewed by using a semi-structured interview
method. The interview was in Thai and coded into the following themes: (1) The
problems in their use of English in the workplace, (2) The need for English language
skills in the workplace, and (3) The types of learning courses needed to improve English
communication in the workplace.
4.1 The problems in their use of English in the workplace
4.1.1 The Use of English to Communicate with the MD.
Participant A said she started her career with the export company which exported
motorcycle spare parts. The owner was Taiwanese and she communicated with her
manager in English, but her English was not satisfactory. She worked at this company for
two years. In 2000, she joined CI and has worked there until the present. At CI, she has
had two foreign coworkers including one designer and one specialist. She reported that
having had previous experience of working with foreigners, she seemed to have no
problems when communicating with the American MD. “กอนหนาทจะมเจานายเปนคนตางชาต
เรามเพอนรวมงานเปนชาวตางชาตอยเดมกคอเปนDesignerคนหนง เปนSpecialistคนหนง เรากจะคนเคย
ท จ ะท า ง าน กบ ฝ ร งอ ย แ ล ว” However, her subordinates, engineers and operators, feared
contact with the non-Thais and feared speaking in English.
Participant B mentioned that before working at CI, he started his career with Viva-Light
which manufactured lamps and lamp spare parts. His position was a manager who not
only controlled the production but also took charge of the design section. The owner of
this company was Thai and thus he had no experience in communicating with non-Thais.
He gave an idea about working with the foreigner that boss always looked for the data,
analysis and the final result. Then, the reports should be easy to read and to understand.
UNCLEAR – CRARIFY. He thought he would have difficulties in written
communication with the American MD.
Participant C stated that she had an experience working with an American company,
Siam Restaurant. This company imports leavening agent for Pepsi Cola from USA and
distributes it to the factory in Thailand. Moreover, she provided more detail, saying that
she had no problem with English as she had graduated from Australia and had worked
with foreigners since her graduation. “ออยไมมปญหาคะ เพราะออยทางานกบตางชาตตลอด”
However, her subordinates encountered problems in communication as a result of
difference in culture between Thailand and abroad.
4.1.2 Problems with Listening and Speaking
Participant A stated that she communicated via speaking with her two foreign colleagues
in everyday English style as it facilitated understanding. With the arrival of the American
MD, she began to think more about speaking correctly in terms of grammar and
formality. Moreover, she could not use vivid sentences. “เม อ ก อน เร าม เพ อน รวมงาน เป น
ชาวตางชาต เวลาคยมนจะเปนการคยสบายๆคอคยสไตลทแบบพอแครเร อง แตพอมเจานาย MD เปน

Participant B seemed to encounter problems with listening. He said the people from
different countries have different accents. When they spoke in the English language to
him he had a great deal of problems and difficulty in terms of listening. “การพดน. กคอแตละ
ชาต มนจะม Native ของแตละคนอยแลวครบ คอ Accent มนจะไมเหมอนกน แตการฟงจะคอนขางม

Participant C said that she had no problem with listening and speaking for
communication, but her subordinates had a problem with listening, a problem she
overcame by writing a note. “ถาออยนะไมม แตถารองเนยกจะมเรองการฟงนดนง แตรองเขาแกปญหา
ดวยการเอากระดาษไปจดเลย”
4.1.3 Problems with Writing and Reading
Participant A accepted that she had difficulties with writing as she wrote in Thai-style
with no vivid sentences and sometimes the sentences had incorrect grammar. Moreover,
she expected her subordinates to write in correct English because they have to write tags
and reports as part of their routine job. “เปนเรองการเขยนกอน อนดบหน งนะคะ และกการอานตามมา
ตดๆเปนอนดบสองคะ อนน. เปนของผใตบงคบบญชา ท เบญคดวาเขานาจะคดปรบปรง”
Participant B commented that reading was not a problem. But in writing, he commented
writing was different from speaking because correct grammar is needed in writing. “เขยน
น.จะมปญหาเรองการเขยนไมถกหลกไวยกรณ เพราะภาษาเขยนจะมความแตกตางจากภาษาพดครบ”
Participant C expressed that she had a small amount of difficulty in sentence writing.
Sometimes, she arranged adverbs and adjectives in the wrong positions. Moreover, she
took charge as an advisor to proof her subordinate’s writing because the subordinate had
not self-confidence in communicating with others. It seemed that her subordinate had a
great deal of problems in writing. “เรากยงมกนบางนะ บางทเรากมการเรยบเรยงประโยคบาง แตอยาง
ของรองกจะเอามาใหออยอานอกทหนง กลวอานไมรเรองอะไรอยางน. คะ คาทใชอาจไมถกตอง”
4.2 The need for English language skills in the workplace
Participant A said the listening skill was the first priority English skill needed for
communication as it is necessary to understand what a speaker is saying before the
listener can reply. Therefore, speaking skill was the second most important skill needing
to be improved. She offered another reason for difficulty with listening and speaking, that
being due to the face-to-face nature of the communication, which leaves little time for
thinking. “วา พด กบฟงน. เวลามนเผชญหนาตอนใชคะไมมเวลาใหไตรตรอง ใชคะ แตการเขยนกบอานเหมอนม
เวลาใหแตงประโยคใชไหมคะ” But in regards to writing and reading, there is time to reflect. In
addition, she suggested that her subordinates needed to improve their writing skill first,
followed by reading skill because they wrote tags and reports in English every day. She
hoped her subordinates could communicate in English by using simple words in the near
future.
Participant B mentioned that he needed to improve his listening and speaking skills first
because listening and speaking were prompt form of interaction, leaving no time to
prepare yourself, nor to create utterances. If you have lower level proficiency with both
skills, you would miss-communicate. “การฟงและพด เปนการสอสาร เออ ซงหนา คอวาเราไมมเวลา
เตรยมตว ตองพดโตตอบกนทนทสด ไมคอยมเวลาใหนกคาศพท แบบวาจะพดคยกนไมรเรองเลย” He gave as
another reason that children learn their first communication skill by listening to their
parents. He thought that listening was the most important skill that needed to be
practiced. In relation to his subordinates he commented that his they needed to improve
their writing and reading skills because these were the skills related to their work.
Participant C stated her subordinates urgently needed to improve their writing skill as it
concerned to their routine job. However, if we considered the present impact, training
should be focused on listening. “เรงดวนนาจะเปนเรองเขยน แตถาเปน impact แรกทควรจะ focus
น.นคอฟงเพราะมนจะตองฟงกอน แตงานเราเนยเราตอง involve เรองเขยน”
4.3 The types of learning courses needed to improve English communication in the
workplace
Participant A suggested that she needed company support in terms of setting a specific
course, for example, a presentation training course, report writing, and how to conduct a
meeting. The courses taught English using the specific sentences that could be used at
work. Furthermore, there should be a Business English course with only four to five
persons per class, as small classes resulted in more benefits than larger classes. “อยากให
บรษทสนบสนนในการให Course เรยนแหละ แตวา Course เรยนทแบบตรงประเดนมากข.นนะคะ คอเคย

Participant B commented that the class might take the form of a conversational-style
class which discussed case studies, for example, how do you talk to shopkeeper when
you go to the market. This teaching style was better suited than that of the teacher
lecturing and writing on the board. This case study class should include not more than
five to six persons so that the teacher could take care of all students. “การยก Case เปน Case
study และไมใหญ คออาจารยสวนมากดแลทวถงในความเหนผม 5-6 คนกกาลงด”
Participant C gave the opinion that the best practice was using English every day at work.
It was better to learn with a teacher who knew your job than with someone who did not.
In addition, participant C commented that she improved the English of her subordinates
by guiding and coaching them as a part of the everyday routine. She called this style of
English language learning “On the job training”. “อยางเดกทางานในรานอาหารทไมเคยทางานใน
รานอาหารมากอน คณกจะรวาไอเนยมนเรยกวาอะไรคอคณจะรมนเลยโดยอตโนมต คอเปนon the job

CHAPTER V
DISCUSSION
This research paper has been designed to examine the needs, the problems, and
the types of learning classes suitable for three executive with Carpets International
Thailand. The discussion of the findings attempts to answer the research questions of the
study: (1) To what extent are there problems in using English for communication within
the organization? (2) To what extent is there a need for English skills for communication
within the organization? (3) What type of English training course is appropriate for CI’s
staff to develop communication within the organization?
5.1 To what extent are there problems in using English for communication within
the organization?
The study showed that there were two factors contributing to the problems in their
usage of English in the workplace. These factors were the personality factor and the
English skill factor. In terms of personality factor, the three participants had differences
in their working background. Participant A and participant C have worked with non-Thai
and both have less of a problem using English for communication than participant B who
had never worked with a foreign company. This may be one of the factors that explains
why they had a different degree of difficulty using English in the workplace. This finding
corresponds to those of Dudley-Evans and St. John (1998) who commented that personal
information are factors which may affect the way learners learn. Moreover, the study
found that their subordinates experience fear in using English for communication with
non-Thais and sometimes feel unconfident to talk.
With regard to the English skill factor, the results of English communication skills
were not satisfactory on listening and speaking. The main problem of the participants
was the listening skill, especially in relation to the accent of the speaker, a finding which
is similar to the study of Jaroensak (2009). He commented that the listening skill had the
highest level of problem, noting that if the listener could not receive the massages from
the speaker successfully, the listener will miss the communication. This finding is similar
to the current study as the participants of both studies had to use English to
communication in routine job. In the former study, participants contracted each other via
telephone, the same as the participants of this study, who mostly contact the foreign MD
via telephone and talk in meetings. Thus listening is the main problem experienced by
high position staff.
Nevertheless, it was found that the main problems of the participant’s subordinates
were writing skill, particularly related to grammar. The participant’s subordinate were
unable to use correct grammar when writing. Many people feel writing is the most
complex of the four skills and therefore is more difficult than the other skills. All writing
consists of words and sentences that have to be arranged in accordance with the rules of
grammar, logic and common sense to create meaningful sentences. This finding
correlates with the findings of Maithong (2011) who commented that the writing skill is
considered to have the greatest level of difficulty among the four skills. The same finding
in the two studies may be the result of writing in English being part of the participant’s
routine job in both studies. The participants of Maithong’s study wrote down the details
of their customer requirements on an order from, which is similar to the participant’s
subordinates of this study who wrote down the detail of goods in tags. So both the
participants of Maithong’s study and this study face a similar problem.
The findings, however, are different from Saisuttirak (2010). He commented that
the problems of his participants were with all four English skills. This may be due to the
fact that the participants of Saisuttirak’s study were students which is different to this
study. The participants of this study are working people who have more specific
problems than the students who have the problems in general.
5.2 To what extent is there a need for English skills for communication within the
organization?
From the finding of this study, the listening skill was regarded as the skill with the
highest level of need to improve the English competence of the participants. The finding
show that: frist, conversation was face-to-face communication such as asking for
information, giving opinions during meetings, and commenting and critiquing during
seminars. These activities need a high level of competence in listening and speaking
skills. This result is in line with Jaroensuk (2009) who found that the listening skill was
the most significant skill needing improvement as well as the speaking skill, which
should both be highly emphasized. This finding is similar to Jareonsuk’s study as the
participant groups have the same specific purpose for development: business
communication. Second, the English accents were different and this is difficult to
understand. Kachru (1992) claimed that when people learn English as a foreign language,
they have the base of their first language which allows them to develop their own norm
resulting in the varieties of the English language found around the world. Finally,
Participant B stated that people started learning language by listening like a child. They
listened to their parents when children and later they uttered words, such as “Mon” and
“Dad”.
For their subordinates, writing and reading were at the high level of needs for
improving of their English skills. Participants were using these skills in their routine
work including writing tags, report writing, and reading the information of their orders.
This finding is in line with Chalaysap (1992) who commented in relation to writing and
reading that reading skill that they were used mostly by supervisors and upper-level
employees, followed by writing, listening, and speaking.
5.3 What type of English training course is appropriate for CI’s staff to develop
communication within the organization?
From the finding of this study, the participants suggested in relation to the training
course the following. First, the course should be a specific course, for example; a
presentation training course, report writing or proposal writing course, and how to
conduct a meeting. These courses would be taught in English and using specific
sentences which the learners could use in working. Second, the courses should be a
Business English course as the company was a global organization which needed to deal
with people from countries in term around the world in terms of commercial trading.
These two findings corroborated with the finding of Hsiu (2003) who recommended that
ESP should be incorporated into a business-related English course in order to promote
satisfactory attainment of English competence and business-related knowledge. In
addition, the class should be a small class, around 4-6 persons, to satisfy the needs of the
participants in developing their English skill.
This small class is different from the classes suggested by other related Thai
literatures which suggest only that classes should emphasize and focus on listening or
speaking or writing or reading but they do not comment on the size of the class. This
small class may improve English skills for communication efficiently and quickly.
CHAPTER VI
CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS
This chapter provided the conclusions of the research on the problems, the needs,
and the type of training course for using English in the organization as well as the
recommendations derived from the findings and the discussion of the findings.
6.1 Conclusion
This research paper aimed to study the problems, the needs, and the training course
for using English for communication in the organization. The findings of this study
attempted to answer the three aforementioned research questions.
This study utilized a qualitative research methodology consisting of open-ended
questions in an interview designed as a semi-structured interview. The interviewing data
was coded according to three themes: (1) The problems in their use of English in the
workplace, (2) The need for English language skills, and (3) The types of learning
courses needed to improve English communication. The findings revealed that the
listening skill and the speaking skill of the executives had a high level of problems and
high level of need to use English for communication within the organization. In addition,
the lack of self-confidence and the fear to communicate in English may be the cause of
the problems. However, the results showed that their subordinates’ problems and needs
were the writing skill and the reading skill. The problems and needs of these four skill
depend on the type of business and the position of the workers within the organization.
These findings, problems and needs, were similar to other related literatures. However,
in terms of the types of courses, this researcher’s findings were different to those in the
literature review. The English course should not only emphasize the specific skills but
should consist of only a small class (4-6 persons per class) and on the job training (using
every day while working). In fact, the effective course might consist of: specific subject,
specific learner, and specific class size.
6.2 Recommendations
Based on the findings and conclusions of this study, the following
recommendations are made for future research.
6.2.1 This study was the first to analyze the needs, and possible training course at
Carpets International Thailand. There should be another similar investigation in order to
confirm the finding in relation to the target group’s needs in terms of designing a more
effective English course that satisfies learners’ needs.
6.2.2 A subsequent study on the same topic should be conducted to evaluate the
attitude and motivation towards learning English for communication and the benefit in
terms of participant occupations.
6.2.3 Additional studies should be conducted on a larger scale to gain more
detailed and reliable information regarding activities in terms of using English for
communication within the organization. These additional studies should cover other
levels of the employees, such as supervisor level and foreperson level.
6.2.4 Finally, if this type of research were to be conducted on an industry-scale or
national-scale, a clearer picture of using English for workplace communication by Thai
people would be revealed. Furthermore, such a research would point toward the proper
direction for improving English skills that will benefit future generations of Thai people.
