The FLAME 2 December 2016

by Ira Blitz. PresidentOur Men’s Club is bursting

at the seams with pride at the response to our Veteran’s Day Sunday event. It was wonderful to see the large turnout of veterans from our community whom we had the privilege to honor. Many of these veterans had never been given recognition for their service and sacrifice. All were given certificates thanking them for their service and listing their branch of service. Special mention was given to the heroes from our community including Lt. Edward Zager, who was killed in a rocket attack in Vietnam in 1968. A wonderful talk on “Jews in the Military” was enlightening for everyone. We are thankful that General William Cohen, who was to give this keynote address, is recovering well from a stroke three weeks ago and we pray for his continued health. A special thanks to Simon Burrow who chaired this event and to all who helped. Thanks to Janice Markham for a soul-moving rendition of our national anthem on the violin. Thanks to the Marine Reserve Color Guard for their uplifting display. Finally, thanks to our Rabbi Emeritus Gil Kollin, who gave the invocation and set the proper tone for our event.

Congressman Adam Schiff will be coming to our December 4 Bagel breakfast. He will be giving his perspective on the recent election and on the Middle

East after accompanying President Barack Obama to Israel for the funeral of Sh imon Pe re s . We thank Fred Rotenberg for arranging this very timely event. This should be of interest to everyone in the congregation.

Men’s Club successfully inaugurated our new He-Brews and Burgers event October 26 at Lucky Baldwin’s Trappiste in Pasadena. A nice-sized group had a chance to socialize in an unstructured conducive atmosphere. This will recur each month on the last Wednesday from 5:30-7:00 PM.

Congratulations to Nathan Feinberg and his parents Jane and David Feinberg on his upcoming bar mitzvah on December 3, and to Maggie Ho and her parents Ofer Ho and Jeanine Svonkin on her bat mitzvah on December 10.

Our recent Football Pool winners were Fred Rotenberg, David Lorin, Joe Widman and Art Taus and Jerry Kaplan. Thanks to all who joined in on this fundraiser,

Upcoming on the first Sunday of school in January, we will host the traditional Men’s Club Pancake Breakfast, free to all.

May the miracle of Hanukkah this month bring joy and well-being to all our friends and families.

If you were sick, would you call us?If your partner, child, or parent were in a local hospital,

would you let us know?Would you alert us if you knew that another

congregant had been hospitalized, or was recovering at home or in a nursing home?

Bikkur Cholim (visiting the sick) is among the most important mitzvot in Jewish tradition. Supporting you and your loved ones is also how we strengthen our community.

But we can't be there if we don't know about it. Please call Bruce at the Temple office (626) 798-1161 and let us know how we can help. Rabbi Raucher and Cantor Ruth

by Judy Callahan Sisterhood PresidentYou knew Sisterhood was around

last month by the amazing aroma of baking babkas or the animated discussions following our Rosh Chodesh gathering. This month you will have the opportunity to be part of Zingen Far Sholem, a wonderful group of singers who will lead us in Yiddish singing on December 11 at 1:30 PM in Wohlmann Hall. Many of us did not grow up in

Yiddish-speaking households, but there is something evocative that triggers our collective memories when we hear the tunes. This should be a really fun program.

Our Yoga and Torah sessions continue and more cooking classes will be offered in the future. In addition, it is never too early to start your Hanukkah shopping at our Judaica shop. Look for the featured local artist of the month as you stock up on your holiday needs.

On Sunday morning, January 22, we are excited to present a bagel breakfast featuring Dr. Kate Kurtin, professor at Cal State LA, discussing children and the effect of their interactions with modern media – how and when they should be plugged in. More information about this program, including a catchy title, will follow. Save the date now as parents and grandparents will definitely want to attend this important program, which will include the new guidelines from the American Pediatric Association.

It is not too late to send in your Sisterhood membership dues. In addition to offering great programs open to everyone, we give extra support to our youth and the entire PJTC community. This month we approved a $2,000 gift to our youth programs to use as needed by our USY and Kadima groups. $36 is all it takes to be part of this great group of women who are part of the international Women’s League of Conservative Judaism. You can mail your check to PJTC Sisterhood c/o the temple (attention: Terry Meng). The larger our membership, the more we are able to offer our community.

B'nai Mitzvah Celebrations

Maggie Ho, daughter of Jeanine Svonkin and Ofer Ho, and sister of Max (age 16) and Miranda (10), will be called to the Torah on December 10.

Maggie is an eighth grader at Marshall Fundamental School here in Pasadena. Go Eagles!

Maggie is passionate about caring for animals and volunteering with first and

second graders at her sister Miranda’s elementary school, helping them learn to love reading as much as she does. She is happiest when she can spend time with her family and friends, playing Minecraft, or snuggling up with her mom and kitties, Minnie and Jackie, while watching her favorite TV shows.

Nathan Feinberg will be called to the Torah as a bar mitzvah on December 3.

The son of Jane and David Feinberg and older brother of Dina, Nathan is in the seventh grade at Huntington Middle School in San Marino.

Nathan was awarded the Certificate of Excellence by his school for outstanding academic performance in sixth grade. His favorite subjects are science and history. He has played piano since he was eight and participates annually in the California Certificate of Merit competition. Nathan plays soccer, basketball and baseball, participating at the all-star level in all three sports in recent years. He helped pitch his baseball team to the regular season championship last year. He hopes to one day play for his favorite team, the Los Angeles Angels. In addition to sports, Nathan also loves playing and talking about video games.

Nathan’s mitzvah project will be to coach his sister’s softball team. He will be able to share his love of the game with younger players, including his sister.

Thank You For Your Generosity, PJTC Family!by Diane Burr

550 pounds of food were delivered to Foothill Unity Center, as a result of this year's High Holy Days collection. Also, forty turkeys and many side dishes and staples were donated for the Thanksgiving drive.

The Social Action Committee is grateful for all these, and any future donations.

Remember, the basket in the lobby always looks more beautiful when it is full. So, enjoy the mitzvah of giving.

PJTC also participates in the holiday toy drive. Please, drop an unwrapped peaceful toy in the Toy Drive

basket. Foothill Unity Center serves 10,000 clients in the San

Gabriel Valley. We at PJTC are happy to be one of many Foothill Unity Center partners working together to help people in our community.

Most Fun Event of the Year!! Dear PJTC community,I want to thank you for all of the love and support you

have given us during the loss of my mother, Benay Grater. We appreciate all of the cards, notes and donations made in her honor. And we were deeply moved by all of you who came to the shiva service, helping us to mourn in our community, aer returning home from the funeral in South Carolina.

On behalf of Franci, Ella and Noah, we are most grateful to feel surrounded in this time of loss and grief.

With gratitude, Joshua

e Phillips family wishes to thank the PJTC family for their kindness and caring expressions at the passing of Herbert Phillips on February 24.

We are most appreciative, Zina

ank you to everyone who oered their condolences on the loss of Faye’s beloved brother, Stuart Chason. Faye and Ike also appreciate all the congratulations on the birth of their rst great-grandchild, Izak Mayer Stark. We’re grateful to you all.

LBSRS helps MAC with Passover DeliveriesEvery year at Passover

the Membership Assistance Committee (MAC) delivers greetings to PJTC congregants who have been hospitalized or bereaved in the previous six months.

This year some of the deliveries were enhanced by colorful cards hand-made by children in the Louis B. Silver Religious School. Many thanks to the young people for helping to brighten the holiday for our congregants!

A Kiddush Plea

Yiddish Song Get Together – Sunday June 26Come along to our Sing-along, hum-along and listen-along.

Some congregants at PJTC are forming a Yiddish song club. We intend to get together about four times a year on Sunday aernoons in Wohlmann Hall. Our rst gathering will be June 26 at 12:30...about two months away.

Marty Kirschen and others have collections of songs which we will listen to or sing along with. e songs will be on CDs, audio cassettes and video. and if we have some piano players – that too. Don’t worry about singing out of tune … o-notes will likely cancel each other out. No need to know Yiddish. We will have song sheets.

Marty has hosted such gatherings before, some with Annie Cheslow. ey have proved fun and meaningful! We will have some discussion as well. We also look forward to many of our participants bringing along or suggesting songs, as well as being guest song leaders – sorry, no solos permitted.

We will have snacks and beverages and anticipate our get togethers to last about one to one-and-a-half hours.

If you are considering coming, please call or email Marty at (626) 797-3280 or [email protected].

Not many April showers Lots of May flowersand a few nice Kiddush hosts too.But our open dates will come quite soon.Could you help on one of the two first weeks of June?Call or email Roz Scherr, She'll be glad to hear from you!

New Bereavement Group StartingJennifer Levin, PhD and Marriage and Family Counselor,

who specializes in issues of grief and trauma, has led a very warmly received bereavement group for our community over the past year and a half.

She will be starting a new group, beginning in mid-January 2017, which will meet for eight sessions at PJTC on Wednesday afternoons. The fee is $200 for the eight sessions, and pre-registration is required. No one will be turned away for lack of funds.

If you, or someone you know in our wider community, might like to participate in this group, please contact Dr. Levin at (626) 695-4211 or [email protected]

This program is co-sponsored by PJTC and the Jewish Federation of the San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys.
