It is a part of the area covered by Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority. The town isan important railway and roadway junction. Barasat is also the name of a sub-division centering the city.
As an urban setup in the vicinity of the Kolkata, the town is within the area of Greater Kolkata. Several significantroads like National Highway 34 (Krishnanagar Road leading towards North Bengal), Jessore Road (road leading toJessore in Bangladesh via Bongaon); road leading to Basirhat etc. cross through the town.
Publication of e-newsletter will bringawareness among citizens about variousworks done and being taken up by Barasatmunicipality. The newsletter will act like acommon platform for citizen andMunicipality . With this effort we will becloser to the citizens by focusing ondevelopment activities . was no Chairman of the municipality; Magistrate was
the Controller of municipality. Later on after 1882
Barasat Municipality had got its own formation as an
autonomous body and became local government.
Barasat Association, a citizens organization, had help
Barasat Municipality by donating land for the
construction of municipal building.
Total Barasat municipal area divided into 29 nos. of
Mouzas. Previously, there were no wards and later there
were 18 wards under Barasat Municipality. Later on after
amalgamating surrounding Panchayets within Barasat
Municipality in 1995 and then after, at present Barasat
Municipality has 35 nos.wards.

Location – Latitude : 88.48OE , Longitude : 22.72ON
North: Khilkapur Paschim Panchayat.South : Kemia Khamarpara Panchayat / Madhyamgram Municipality.East : Kaira Kadambagachi Panchayat.West : Ichapur Nilganj Panchayat.

The cultural diversity has increased over the years with people coming from different parts of the state as well asneighbouring Bangladesh. An annual fair held in honour of a Muslim saint, Hazrat Ekdil Shah is attended by bothMuslims and Hindus, since hundreds of years. Kalipuja is a very important event in . All the communities join thisoccasion together. Kalipuja is organized by different clubs of .Rabindra Bhavan is a cultural building made by WestBengal state cultural department on Jessore road. Different cultural event and activities are organised throughoutthe year.

Planning of Developments for upcoming months:
Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT)
Providing basic services (e.g. water supply, sewerage, Drainage, urban transport, Beautification Greenareas) to households and build amenities in cities which will improve the quality of life for all, especiallythe poor and the disadvantage a national priority.
Under this mission ,in the coming month municipality will develop 2 no parks (1) Hatipukur park(ward -14) (2) Kazipara park(ward -22)
Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana- Housing for All (Urban)
“Housing for All” Mission for urban area will be implemented during 2015-2022 and the Mission will providepucca houses to all eligible poor families by 2022 with central, state & municipal fund assistance. There are 159slums in this Barasat municipality. All of these slums suffer from housing shortage & various infrastructuralshortcomings. Projects have been planned year wise for the improvement of housing, roads, water supply, anddrainage systems.
National Urban livelihoods Mission (NULM)
• To reduce poverty among the urban poor through the promotion of diversified and gainful selfemployment and wage-employment,
• Enhancing and expanding Livelihoods options of the urban poor,• Building skills to enable access to growing marked-based job opportunities offered by emerging urban
economics,• Training for and support to the establishment of micro-enterprises by the urban poor – self and
group,• Ensuring linkages to shelter, basic services and empowerment to promote sustainable approaches to
poverty alleviation and• Building capacity of the urban poor, their institutions and the machinery involved in the
implementation of Livelihoods development and poverty alleviation programme.
Under this mission, Barasat Municipality, from March-2016 onward will provide joboriented vocational training programme for 925 youth under 23 training subject.

National Urban Health Mission:The National Urban Health Mission would aim to improve the health status of the urban population in general,but particularly of the poor and other disadvantaged sections, by facilitating equitable access to quality healthcare through a revamped public health system, partnerships, community based mechanism with the activeinvolvement of the urban local bodies.Barasat municipality is going to upgrade all HAU(Health Administrative unit) to UPHC with improvedinfrastructure for better service delivery as per mission guideline. Newly inaugurated 3 no UPHC are (1) Natunpukur UPHC (ward -28) (2) Madhya Baluria in ward no-34; and (3) Badu in ward no-20.

• Intra municipal Strom water drainage improvement initiative with an estimated cost 3.01 crore of 22 noprojects will be implemented in upcoming months.
• Surface water supply, (JnNURM Project cost = 195crores) work in progress in different wards.
• Strom water drainage, (JnNURM Project cost=85.48 crore) work progress verge of completion.
IT. Initiatives:
Barasat municipality will launch newly upgraded website with added facility of citizens grievancelink in the coming month.
Education dept initiatives:• Under Sabooj- sathi programme of GoWB, municipality under process of distribution of 10,915 cycle to 26
no High School throughout the month of February-2016.
• Distribution of Digital ration cards under NFSA programme of GOI , municipality in a role to handover 5category new ration cards to 96,000 families.
• Distribution of shoes to all primary school going students in 72 no schools under Barasat municipality willbe rolled out in up coming weeks.
Innovative projects: MOU has already been signed with WBPCB and municipality regarding waste to energy (WTE)
Biometanation treatment facility for 5TPD MSW (organic MSW) to produce 350KW electricity per day. Itwill be done 90:10 cost sharing method between with WBPCB and municipality in 1 acre land. Project costwill be around 102 lakhs with 15lakhs per annum operation cost ( will be arranged by municipality asperMOU).Generated electricity will be utilised for street lighting, pumping station & other related matters.Primary civil construction works is under process .
Under “swachh bharat mission” municipality will organised theme based clean city drive under differentthemes like clean city competition, whole city statue cleaning day, whole city street facing boundary wallcleaning drive etc.
For resouece mobilization and proper utilization of existing assets Barasat municipality going to join PPPPinitiatives in 2 no market redevelopment projects.
