Spot Suspicious “IRS” Emails and Phone CallsAs we get into the hustle and bustle ofthis holiday season, I wanted to give yousome tips to help keep you safe and alert.Con artists will be increasing their effortsto obtain your personal information usingvery official looking emails and phonescams claiming to be from the IRS. Thesecon artists know a lot about you from yourdigital footprint. (Oh yeah, they do.)
Here are 5 tips that are a sure sign you arebeing scammed.
1. Demand for immediate payment.
2. Demand you pay your taxes withoutany opportunity to question or appeal the“amount owed”.
3. Require you to use a specific paymentmethod. (ie: prepaid debit card)
4. Ask or require a card number (debit orcredit) over the phone.
5. Threaten to have you arrested or sendin local law-enforcement, of any type, tocollect your payment.
Stay calm. Even if you know you owethe IRS they will never contact you like
this and ask for this information in thismanner. Remember, the IRS has formalprocesses in place for people with taxissues.
Let’s help the IRS catch these con artists. You can report the incident to the TreasuryInspector General for Tax Administration(TIGTA) at 1.800.366.4484 orwww.tigta.gov. You may also file acomplaint using the FTC ComplaintAssistant (ftccomplaintassistant.gov). Besure to add in the notes what type of IRSscam it (ie: email, phone, social media, text message).
As you visit with friends and family duringthis holiday season stay safe and alert.

Loan modification agreement does notavoid forclosure
During the recent recession, mortgage borrowers wereencouraged to seek loanmodifications. My experience was thatonly the most persistentborrowers were grantedsuch relief after manymonths of repeatedapplications andsubmittal of volumns ofrequested documentpackages. In a recent MichiganCourt of Appeals case aborrower sought to stop aforeclosure on the basis that hehad successfully complied withhis loan modification agreementand that his financial stress wascontinuing.
The Court found that themortgage lender was not bound
to continue the reliefgranted under the loanmodification and wasaccordingly entitled toforeclosure. As loan modificationagreements expire, home loan borrowerscannot rely on lendersto continue or renewthem. Alternatives may
include new financing or saleof the property. If you are facing an upcomingdeadline please call Jim Porrittto learn of your possibleremedies.
