“Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by himin store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gather-ings when I come.” (I Corinthians 16:2)
Decades ago I was at a huge meeting where an offering wastaken. They did not have plates; they used KFC buckets! Aftercounting the take, they said, “We did not get enough.” They
then brought out a guy who worked the crowd for a second offering! Such a high pressure tactic didnot set well with me. I felt like I was being fleeced.
To be sure, there are ministers and ministries that “fleece the flock.” They pull on the heart strings toget to the purse strings. They take seriously the dictum, "Never let a good crisis go to waste." Theyoften capitalize on a crisis or promise prosperity to those in crisis if they give.
Discerning believers should heed the passage above. An offering was being planned to help needybelievers. The church is instructed to set funds aside weekly “that there be no gatherings when Icome.” In other words, the giving was to be budgeted, systematic, in accordance with one’s personalblessing and devoid of “preacher pressure.”
Doing the giving in this way won’t stop the criticism, but it will remove a lot of the basis for criticism.Plus, it will have the added blessing of being God honoring!
