In 2014, Carle launched VISION 2020, a bold $35 million campaign designed to transform healthcare through innovative medicine and compassionate care. By the time the campaign ended on December 31, 2020, your contributions had provided $36,953,414 for truly life-changing programs and initiatives at Carle. The number of ways you’ve helped and the size of your impact are simply too large to measure, as is the depth of our gratitude. On behalf of our team, our patients and the countless lives you’ve touched through your generous support of VISION 2020, thank you for making a million moments possible.

“Charitable giving means the difference between providing expected care and exceptional care. And we want to be exceptional.” With those words in 2014, Carle Health president and CEO James Leonard, MD, launched a visionary campaign to transform healthcare in our region. VISION 2020 was a bold plan, with an even bolder target: raising $35 million to support innovative medicine and compassionate care at Carle. But we’ve never been afraid of big challenges. With your help, we not only met our goal, but also surpassed it, raising more than $36.9 million. To expand opportunities and access. To fuel groundbreaking research. And to ensure

that exceptional care is what’s expected and achieved at Carle, every day and for every patient.

In fall 2016, we saw the first fruits of our efforts with the opening of the Stephens Family Clinical Research Institute, an innovative center created to pursue game-changing medical discoveries with real-world applications for our communities. Already, this impressive team of physician-scientists is exploring new ideas, like new pancreatic cancer treatments and a link between heart attacks and brain activity that could spark major advances in cardiac care.

A Million Moments, Made Possible by YouCarle raises nearly $37 million to transform patient care.

Sometimes philanthropy enables great leaps in technology. And sometimes it provides the little touches that make a world of difference. In 2020, the IGIVE employee giving campaign raised more than $534,000 to enhance care for patients with autism. This unique initiative is transforming the way care is delivered system-wide at Carle, funding autism awareness training and creating sensory-friendly spaces that reduce anxiety and help ensure every patient receives the same exceptional care in an environment comfortable to them. Carle has always been proud of our world-class nurses, knowing how much they do every day to shape our patients’ experience. That’s why we earmarked a significant portion of the funds generated by VISION 2020 for nursing scholarships. Your gifts to the Carle Advancing Professional Excellence Nursing Scholarship Program provided tuition assistance to nurses pursuing their education, raising the bar in a program that’s one of the few in the country to achieve Magnet recognition, not just once, but three times in a row.

We truly value all our employees, and it’s because of you we can help them advance their careers. Our Job Readiness and Learning Program provides a path to employment for entry-level workers needing training for entering the workforce. Since the start of VISION 2020, this program has welcomed 124 employees, expanding local job opportunities and giving new hires what they need to excel – no matter where their future ambitions lead.

VISION 2020 has also allowed us to extend our mission beyond our buildings’ walls. Through Community Health Initiatives, Carle has made major strides in reaching those who often lack access to quality medical care. We launched the Carle Mobile Health Clinic and spearheaded Healthy Beginnings – a community-wide initiative to help those caught in the grip of poverty. Through Healthy Beginnings, Carle nurses have already made 11,380 home visits, ensuring that 399 new babies along with 548 new moms received a healthier start in life.

Every year, a large number of uninsured patients visit our emergency departments seeking care for chronic conditions. The Dr. Benjamin Robbins Legacy Fund will bring the care these patients need directly to them,

through new specialty clinics provided by the Mobile Health Clinic. Named for the physician who helped lay the foundation for the pediatrics program at Carle, these clinics will focus largely on children, helping parents carry out the complex care required for chronic conditions like asthma.

The programs, services and initiatives made possible by VISION 2020 will be even more essential as Carle Health continues to expand its footprint. Carle has long partnered with area hospitals to bring the latest in care and technology to local communities throughout our extended service region. In just the past year, Carle acquired Advocate BroMenn Medical Center, Advocate Eureka Hospital and affiliated sites in central Illinois, providing new opportunities to assist families with world-class care.

Of course, no annual report in 2020 would be complete without mentioning the ongoing pandemic and the strain it’s placed on hospitals around the world. When we launched VISION 2020, it would have been impossible to imagine the global crisis that would define the final year of the campaign. And yet, we can think of no better proof of its need. With your help, Carle raised more than $275,000 to battle COVID-19 in our communities – protecting the healthy, assisting the sick and taking care of the strong, courageous Carle employees who’ve taken care of us. In the darkest moments, your kindness and support kept the light of hope shining bright. On behalf of Carle Health and all those involved with VISION 2020, we would like to thank you for your phenomenal investment in the health and well-being of our communities. Your gifts have made the difference between expected care and exceptional care, making exceptional always expected at Carle. You’ve allowed us to transform healthcare in our region, expand beyond our walls and provide both compassion and innovation. We’re world-class because of you. Your support has made our vision a reality. Thank you.

Sincerely, Rick and Jeanene Stephens VISION 2020 Campaign Co-chairs

A N N U A L G I V I N G COVID-19 Support and Employee Disaster Relief

A Community RespondsProviding compassionate care in a time of pandemic.

In March 2020, the World Health Organization officially declared COVID-19 a pandemic, and Carle transitioned from a hospital on the cutting edge of research to a hospital on the front lines of an epic battle. In the coming weeks, schools emptied, restaurants

closed and hospitals began struggling to purchase the equipment and protective gear they needed. To ensure Carle was ready to handle a growing crisis, James Leonard, MD, president and CEO of Carle Health, and Beth Katsinas, vice president of Carle Center for Philanthropy, sent out an urgent letter asking the community for help. And Rachel Schroeder, a long-time Carle Auxilian and Carle supporter, was among the first to respond.

“I had been thinking about COVID,” said Schroeder. “And after reading that letter, I felt I needed – and wanted – to be involved.”

Schroeder’s volunteer work at Carle began in 2001, largely out of gratitude for the exceptional care her husband received during his long battle with lung cancer. And it ended – at least temporarily – during the pandemic, when Carle sent all volunteers and nonessential staff home for their own safety. It was a sad moment for the dedicated volunteer, who has spent many happy hours helping patients at the main information desk at the hospital in Urbana. But it didn’t stop her – or hundreds of others – from helping in a different way.

Their monetary gifts funded two initiatives created to help Carle staff and patients during the pandemic – the

COVID-19 Support fund and the Employee Disaster Relief fund. The former supported the vast preparedness, containment and response efforts at Carle, while the latter helped Carle team members with pressing financial needs created by the crisis. Altogether, donors raised more than $330,000.

Gifts to the COVID-19 Support fund purchased hundreds of COVID-19 care kits for team members and a long list of equipment needed on the front lines, from a thermal scanner at the entrance of the Urbana hospital to nine portable air filtration units to help Carle Richland Memorial Hospital prepare for the worst. No need was too great, or detail too small. Among the 640,870 masks distributed, for example, there were 1,296 clear masks to help team members interacting with people with hearing loss.

Meanwhile, funds dedicated to Employee Disaster Relief went to Carle team members who were hard at work saving lives. More than $140,000 in grants went to 116 recipients, helping employees meet unexpected expenses related to the crisis.

Many of those dedicated men and women have been on Schroeder’s mind since the pandemic began. “They have spent such long hours, and it’s been very hard on many of them,” said Schroeder, who extends her gratitude and appreciation to all.

While Schroeder says she’s been very fortunate during the pandemic, she’s excited to get back to volunteering. Hopefully it won’t be too long before you see her back at her regular post, dispensing helpful directions, thoughtful advice and a welcoming smile to all.

Rachel Schroeder

Moments of GratitudeWhen COVID-19 was identified in our service region, we were prepared, thanks to an amazing team of medical professionals and a generous community that rushed forward to help. We were humbled by – and grateful for – their support. But we weren’t surprised. Every year, thousands support transformative care at Carle, often in gratitude for the care we’ve provided them or their families. In 2020 alone, 3,780 donors gave more than $3.42 million in financial support, helping us successfully complete our VISION 2020 goal and fuel those million moments of innovative medicine and compassionate care.

V O L U N T E E R I S M Homework Helpers

Learning in LockdownCollege student volunteers use virtual tools to make a meaningful difference.

By the fall of 2020, Leslie Dunavan was like a lot of parents – long on stress and short on time. She had a newborn baby, a demanding job as a life support educator and a second-grader who was beginning to struggle with math. The last item on

that list was especially concerning. Without a little extra help, she knew her daughter could easily fall behind. But she had no idea where that would come from – until an unexpected announcement caught her eye.

“I just stumbled across a CLICK article that was talking about Homework Helpers, and I was like ‘Wow! That would be amazing,’” said Dunavan. The program, which offered free, weekly tutoring sessions for the children of Carle employees, was made possible thanks to student leader volunteers like Priya Rao, who met with families via Zoom.

“I just wanted to lend a helping hand any way that I could,” said Rao, a biology major at the University of Illinois who tutored two students – a high schooler and Dunavan’s daughter Ithuriel, who needed help learning place value and subtraction.

“Shortly after corona happened, we had our first experience with e-learning,” said Dunavan. Unfortunately, it didn’t go well. It was complicated. There were connections issues. And the long sessions couldn’t keep her daughter’s interest. Rao changed that right from the start, using interactive tools built into the program that made learning engaging and fun. “It wasn’t just a video,”

said Dunavan. “They were interacting,” which made the whole experience feel much more personal than before.

Did it make a difference? “A hundred percent,” said Dunavan, adding that two different people at the school noticed her daughter’s improvement and how she was able to work more independently on problems that once required constant help. But she wasn’t the only one who took something away from the experience.

“It was very rewarding,” said Rao, who felt like she was making a real difference with the 90-minute sessions. “I mean, through the student leader program, I’m helping people, but it’s kind of different when it’s education, just because you can actually see them get better and become much more confident in themselves.”

This spring, the program will expand, increasing the number of slots available for students from 20 to 50, which is great news for Dunavan, who hopes to participate again. “It meant so much,” said Dunavan, explaining there was nothing like it before. “It made me feel like Carle really cared to help their employees and that they really cared about their families.”

Moments of MeaningWhen COVID-19 first entered our community in 2020, many volunteers were asked to stay home for their personal safety and the safety of our patients. But the pandemic didn’t stop them from being a force for good. Some used virtual tools to meet old challenges in new ways, while others helped our fundraising and retail activities thrive providing dollars to support the expansion of services, equipment purchases, scholarships and the Carle Auxiliary Guest House. Despite the challenges, 1,799 volunteers continued to serve in multiple ways, giving an astounding 84,516 hours of their time. An additional 600 volunteers donated nearly 82,000 hand-sewn masks for healthcare workers, patients and other community nonprofits and schools.

C O R P O R A T E G I V I N G Carle BroMenn Medical Center Behavioral Health Unit

Racing to Make a DifferenceChase for Champions funds behavioral health expansion.

Since 2014, Chase for Champions has raised more than $400,000 to enhance patient care at Carle BroMenn Medical Center. Normally, the Amazing Race-inspired event invites teams on a mad dash across Bloomington-Normal, followed by a dinner that

celebrates local public safety responders. Due to COVID-19, planners were forced to replace the physical race with a virtual event in 2020, but our amazing corporate sponsors still came through, raising more than $165,000 to renovate and expand the Carle BroMenn Behavioral Health Unit.

There were over 40 corporate sponsors for the 2020 event, including Commerce Bank, which served as one of the event’s lead sponsors. “We’ve had a really long-standing relationship with Carle BroMenn historically,” said J. Phillips, president of Commerce Bank, which has sponsored the race from the start. “Believing in the mission of the organization has really helped us stay involved.”

Phillips says that having a behavioral health unit is huge for the community, especially in times like the current pandemic when isolation can lead to depression, anxiety and other mental health issues.

J. Phillips

“Supporting the behavioral health unit is something that is really part of our core values. There’s also an addiction recovery portion of that unit that is pretty much unprecedented in our area,” said Phillips, who calls the recent improvements nothing less than fantastic.

That’s music to the ears of Laurie Round, vice president and chief nursing officer of Carle BroMenn, who says there’s a tremendous need for facilities like the one at Carle BroMenn. According to Round, 20% of adults experience mental health issues every year. And for one in 25, those issues are severe enough to interfere with their daily activities. Yet, nationwide the number of beds for these types of patients is shrinking.

As McLean County’s only adult behavioral and psychiatric inpatient services and adult inpatient addiction recovery program, the Carle BroMenn Behavioral Health Unit is working to change that. “The unit opened the capacity for us to be able to treat more patients, and provide them with more access to the care they need,” Round said.

It’s not just about expanding capacity. “We’re humanizing our behavioral health facilities,” Round added. To achieve that, the team worked with an architect experienced in behavioral health facility design to create a space that’s more inviting to patients. From the art on the walls, to the furniture, to the use of natural lighting, everything was done with one central objective — to create a better and safer environment for patients and employees. And it wouldn’t have been possible without the Chase for Champions.

On behalf of all the staff and employees at Carle BroMenn Medical Center, we would like to thank all the amazing corporate sponsors and community members who rose to the challenge, making this year’s race one for the record books.

Moments of PartnershipDespite 2020 making in-person events challenging for many, the generosity of our loyal corporate sponsors and the creativity of our staff and volunteers allowed us to continue funding invaluable programs and initiatives at Carle Health, providing world-class healthcare close to home. We’re grateful for the ongoing corporate support that enables us to impact our community in countless ways, including the 2020 Carle Golf Open, which raised more than $338,000 to create a more sensory-friendly experience for our patients with autism who rely on us for their ongoing care.

Page 7: a million moments - Carle

Moments of ImpactSince the beginning of the VISION 2020 campaign, we’ve received many gifts of $10,000 or more. These gifts provided more than $28 million in support for innovative medicine and compassionate care at Carle. Last year, major gifts to Carle totaled $1,080,801. Some were a single donation while others made pledges that were paid over time. These gifts have allowed us to offer transformational care, funding amazing programs like the Dr. Benjamin Robbins Asthma Specialty Clinic through the Mobile Health Clinic and sensory-friendly spaces for our patients with autism. Thank you for your phenomenal support.

M A J O R G I V I N G Community Health Initiatives

Broadening the TentWomen’s Legacy Circle expands Carle outreach efforts.

You could think of the Women’s Legacy Circle as sort of an incubator for great ideas. Since 2009, this special group of philanthropists has supported an endless string of patient-focused initiatives driven by Carle employees. From waiting

room charging stations to iPads that keep families connected with loved ones receiving critical care at Carle, their work has enhanced patient care in a million little ways. And now, they’ve made a major gift that was literally years in the making.

From the moment the organization began, Women’s Legacy Circle members have used their annual membership dues to support ideas that are often outside departmental budgets. Employees looking for project funds make their case directly to the members, who sponsor numerous impactful projects each year. But for the past several years, Circle members have also been setting aside a little something extra.

In 2020, that “little something” resulted in a $75,000 gift, providing privacy tents and a transport van for Carle Community Health Initiatives. This vital outreach program serves as the umbrella for a long list of great community programs, including the Mobile Health Clinic, hospice, home care, Faith Community Health and Healthy Beginnings, which helps ensure that new babies and their moms get a solid start on life.

“It checked off all the boxes,” said Nancy Whitford, former Women’s Legacy Circle president, who chaired

the committee overseeing the gift. “We really liked the community outreach. It’s not just limited to one type of patient or one department. It’s something we thought could be used in all of Carle’s markets. And it provides some volunteer opportunities for our members as well.”

The gift, which includes eight substantial 10’ x 10’ tents complete with heating and cooling, will be used to support a wide range of activities, from mobile health screenings and flu vaccinations to health fairs and other community events. As an added benefit, both the tents and the support vehicle will be branded with the Women’s Legacy Circle name, which will significantly raise the profile of this giving circle and potentially recruit new members and dollars to support future healthcare needs.

Annual dues for the group are $500, and every dime goes towards enhancing patient care. “It’s an opportunity to share your resources in a way that’s doing good and having an impact,” said Whitford. “It’s a very rewarding experience.”

E S T A T E G I V I N G Dr. John C. Mason Family Nursing Scholarship

A Legacy That LastsGift from IRA supports nursing excellence at Carle.

John Mason isn’t the first in his family to bear his name. There was his grandfather, John Mason Sr., MD, who was the town doctor in Rossville, IL, for years. And then there was his father, John Mason Jr., MD, a beloved OB-GYN who guided several generations in Danville, IL, as they drew their very first breath. During his career, he delivered more than 10,000 babies. But it’s his penchant for philanthropy that could be his most-lasting gift.

From start to finish, John Mason Jr., MD, was an Illinois man. Born in Rossville in 1930, he completed his bachelor’s degree at the University of Illinois, followed by a medical degree at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in 1957. But it was Danville where he chose to put down his roots, helping countless new babies navigate their entry into this life. It’s also where he and his wife, Donna, would raise four sons, John, the oldest; Jeff, now a family practice physician in Dallas; and Mike and Steve, who provided the family with two lawyers.

For many years, Dr. Mason ran a successful private practice, but he sold his practice to Carle Clinic Association in 1984, becoming one of the first Carle physicians in the Danville area. It wasn’t an easy decision at the time, remembers his son John, who’s now a successful dentist in St. Charles, IL. But he says his father did it because he believed it was the right thing for his patients. “He felt medicine was changing enough that to be part of a larger organization was going to be best for the long-term future of healthcare.”

It was the beginning of a long and happy collaboration, which he eventually celebrated with a special gift to Carle. Today, the Dr. John Mason Family Endowment is one of several funds that assist Carle nurses pursuing advanced education through the Carle

Advancing Professional Excellence (CAPE) Nursing Scholarship program.

Sadly, in October 2020, Dr. Mason passed away. But even in his passing, he continued his philanthropic work. “He gave through time in his living life, but there were a couple organizations he wanted to make sure his IRA was a beneficiary of,” John said. “And that was, of course, Carle Foundation and the hospital in Danville.” A substantial part of that gift has now been earmarked for the Mason Family Nursing Scholarship, ensuring the ongoing success of the fund he helped create.

Although his father is no longer here, John says his presence is still very much alive in the community he loved. In fact, it’s almost impossible to turn the corner without bumping into someone who was delivered by his father. And John says there’s no better tribute than that. “I think in the end, he wanted to be a good physician, a good husband and a good father. That’s what he did,” said John. “And that’s the legacy he left.”

From left, Michael, Jeffery, John C. Mason Jr., MD, Steven and John

Moments of LifeSince 2014, 30 individuals have joined the Margaret Carle Morris Society by making Carle Center for Philanthropy part of their estate plan. Some are former Carle team members, while others are simply community members looking to make a difference for others. No matter the motivation, we’re grateful for their generosity and commitment to enhancing patient care. Last year, we realized or confirmed $261,307 in deferred gifts. These gifts offer a great way to leave a legacy while ensuring that innovative medicine and compassionate care are always the hallmarks of Carle.

E N D O W M E N T Dr. Michael Novak and Lee Ann Rotz Novak Endowment

A Legacy of LeadingNovak endowment ensures bright future for children with hearing loss.

For 40 years, Michael Novak, MD, was more than a friendly face at Carle; he was a pioneer. During his distinguished career as an otolaryngologist, he performed the first pediatric cochlear implant in the state and established two major

programs to assist children with hearing loss. Now, together with his wife, he’s making sure that work will continue for generations to come through a special endowment.

The Dr. Michael Novak and Lee Ann Rotz Novak Legacy Endowment is designed to fund the greatest needs of

the Carle Expanding Children’s Hearing Opportunities (ECHO) program and its Carle Auditory Oral School (CAOS). Like Dr. Novak, Lee Ann helped develop ECHO. She worked as a cochlear implant audiologist on the Carle ECHO team for almost 30 years. This fund will honor their joint efforts to provide innovative medicine and compassionate care for children with hearing loss.

Created in 1989, ECHO brought a dedicated team of pediatric audiologists, speech pathologists and teachers of children with hearing loss together in one advanced team. CAOS, established a short while later, offered another set of valuable tools for children with hearing loss. The highly specialized school provides these young learners with the oral and auditory skills they need to return to – and thrive in –

Moments of SecurityThe Dr. Michael Novak and Lee Ann Rotz Novak Legacy Endowment is one of 12 endowments established during the VISION 2020 campaign. Currently there are 31 active endowments at Carle, and each one plays a vital role in our mission, funding research, continuing education and other important investments in care. Together, these endowments totaled $5,230,101 at the end of 2020, generating $723,200 to be used for donor-specified purposes or reinvested to fund future programs.

their community schools, paving the way for a lifetime of successful learning.

The Novak Legacy Endowment is one of many at Carle that ensures our patients receive a higher level of medical care. In good times and bad, endowments provide a steady stream of income that supports a wide range of programs. They also provide the funds to innovate and expand. Over the years, says Dr. Novak, philanthropy has made that possible, allowing them to add new services and outreach programs.

“Part of the reason I want to develop an endowed fund is to allow that to continue,” Dr. Novak said. “I want to see this program grow and thrive and get better long into the future.”

“It’s a tremendous source of pride to me that we’ve been able to do this,” he added. “We change lives. We give options to families they never would have had otherwise.” And with this endowment, he plans to make sure that work continues, for many years to come.
